Dangote did not stop anyone from building a refinery, at least during the time he built his. Obasanjo sold the refineries to private investors, one of which was Dangote, before leaving office. However, Yar'Adua revoked the sale. Who knows, by now, all these refinery things would not have been a problem?
There is the WalterSmith refinery in Imo and the upcoming BUA refinery in Akwa Ibom. The above comment is apt because when billion naira businesses are run, they are done so efficiently and ruthlessly. Olam utilises new trucks to transport goods from the north to the ports, just as Wilmar operates its oil plantations (hectares of land) in Cross River professionally. I have said it that Nigerians are not that entrepreneurial, but at best, traders.
What Dangote is doing is entrepreneurship. |

casualobserver: Nigerians are not used to businesses operating at scale and efficiency. we are used to imported tokunboh rickety trucks, with bald tyres and the tank welded by local welders.
This is what happens when a man investS $20B in a business. I can bet you each of those brand new smart looking dangote trucks costs less or the same as the ricketty tokunboh fuel tankers. Thats barganing power of scale at work. when you are buying 10,000 trucks, the manufacturer can even sell to you at cost or even a loss knowing he will make his money on service parts. meanwhile you are buying tokunboh, the foreign dealer wants to make 20%, the nigerian dealer wants to make 30%. you will then fabricate the tank in Nigeria at more than the cost of a factory tank fabrication in china. Dangote will replace the trucks after 5 years and sell to you the one man retailer at the same price he paid for it new. Nigerians think they are businessmen because in Nigeria no matter how inefficient you are you add 100% to your cost and somebody will buy, Nigerians dont understand business, everybody wants to be the owner of an inefficient small scale business. |

Harrison stated that his farm was destroyed by the government. If that is true, I can understand because there are so many risks in crop cultivation, and worse when outside investors who don't understand the industry are brought in. This has happened to Tsekohol Denison who claimed to have made so much money in rice trading, but encountered business issues when his rice farm got flooded and investors demanded their funds. Truth is: people made a lot of money in agro-trading under Buhari's second term in office. The other core issue here with Harrison is why did he promise investors 5% every month and a return of capital after six months? That is where he comes across as fraudulent. Also, why did he venture into politics when he is financially incapable? As a newbie, you don't borrow to contest. You do so with your funds. Akin Alabi has narrated how he almost got broke during his first attempt at politics, but he had built a solid business, which sustained him to re-try. |
Education › Re: Private Universities Vs Federal Universities; Which Truly Offers Better Value? by Gerrard59(m): 2:13am On Oct 28, 2025 |
All federal universities are not equal. All private universities are not equal. The era of private unis not being good or their top grads are equal to second tier grads in federal unis is outdated. My advice to aspiring uni entrants is to target a top private uni if money is not the problem. If money is an issue, head to the top federal uni in your region or the federal uni in your state. For state unis, there are a select few which are acclaimed.
The core issue is the lack of corporate or graduate trainee jobs outside Lagos, Abuja and Port-harcourt. There should be enough graduate jobs outside these places so grads living there can kick-start their careers in structured organisations. |

Romance › Re: Is Her Background Important For A Marriage To Work??? by Gerrard59(m): 4:22am On Oct 27, 2025 |
Background is very important, whether in marriage or even employment. I don't see myself employing an accountant or someone in the finance department who has too many children.
I have seen the effects of having too many children, having children outside a marriage setting and families with fear of the unknown. Just as you, I tend to predict events way before they happen. It works, and when it works so fast and perfectly, I pinch myself! Like, how can I be so accurate? For this reason, I use this skill/gift to guide my activities. So, provided it works for you and it works so well, stick with it.
I cannot marry a woman who comes from a family with too many siblings. More than two makes me ask questions: - What do your parents do for a living? - What do your siblings do for a living? - How old are these siblings? - What level of education are they in, finished or still in school?
Marriage in Nigeria goes beyond both individuals, but also between both families. So, one should be ready, mentally and financially, when getting into a family with too many dependents. I am not saying I won't help, but I don't want to be compelled to pour scarce resources into a family other than mine, especially for the first ten years. Mind you, I, as an individual other than being a father, husband and in-law, have my own life and enjoyment to live. BTW, the cultist brother is already a red flag to me because I would ban such a person from coming near me. Would the sister, now wife, like such? These are the issues. |

What is the thought process behind this - are they reciprocating gestures or is there another reason? It's a Nigerian mentality or would I say poverty mindset (this applies to almost citizens of most poor countries). It's also arr0gant ign0rance since many of these people are supposedly educated. You read their comments on TwitterNG, Nairaland, Instagram and Facebook. Nigerians are not that educated in the real sense o. Our people are terribly Ign0rant and h0rribly arr0gant. There's a lot to unlearn, relearn and learn for many Nigerians. Even if the average person may react emotionally, policymakers should be pragmatic and understand how the world works. As for policymakers, the average Nigerian politician is unintelligent. People who construct roads without pedestrian walkways even in their residential areas or to government offices don't come across as intelligent to me (I've seen open gutters in the road leading to the Governor's office in Awka). How do we expect the same people to understand the basic economics behind tourism? |

shegzhkn: Can you tell me why they'd love (from the commentary) the tough stance on the visa thingy. I mean through their eye (third worlder), it makes no sense. Developing countries or generally countries seeking tourists should aim at citizens of wealthier countries. Touring foreign countries is a feature of "people wey don chop food belly full". Poor people cannot be tourists. To ease their entry, offer these citizens visa free status so they don't have to spend on that aspect or better still save more to spend in the country. Nigeria or generally most African countries have longer routes from wealthier nations, thus costlier air tickets. There are many competitors within the African continent such as Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, etc. Some might ask, "but these wealthier countries make it hard for us (Nigerians) to enter their countries, why should we make it easy for them?" Well, basic economics makes it so: visa free access is offered based on economic and largely population figures. The poorer a country, the weaker its passports. Humans are naturally discriminatory. You or anyone reading this will readily accept Dangote to your home before myself because you know he's richer than me. That's how visa free access works. For that reason, Nigeria should waive visa restrictions for citizens of countries with a GDP per capita of $25K+. Citizens from these countries shouldn't have to apply for a Nigerian visa. |

flexyrule: The level of damage that insecurity has done to our tourism sector is monumental. When I visited Dakar and Banjul last year, I noticed how foreigners were trouping in to visit their tourist sites. There was this particular day I counted 107 luxurious buses filled with tourists. I did some random calculations and the figures I got were mind blowing.Once intending tourists mention visiting Nigeria, their consular staff would either remind them of bandits, kidnappers, suicide bombers or even scammers.Personally, I didn't use to take all those Security Advisory serious.. But after I toured those countries, I realized that there has a been a quiet shift.
Nigeria has lost its glory in the area of tourism. I don't want to even talk about how much revenue has been missed. Tourists were never visiting Nigeria in the first place. The stats say it all. One, obtaining a Nigerian visa is very hard, and from online commentary, many Nigerians LOVE IT. Two, the infrastructure to support tourism outside Lagos and Abuja aren't plentiful. Three, Nigerians are largely dishonest and unnecessarily aggressive. Four, Nigerians love and support ritual killings, especially of naive women. Women are the support pillars of the tourism industry globally. A country that cannot protect its native women cannot do the same for foreign women. |

Interesting commentary you have there OP. I live in Japan and it has made me understand there is a huge difference between living or relocating to an Anglophone country vs a non-Anglophone nation. Both aren't the same. It's even more why one should be careful and specific when moving outside. It's why when I read netizens recommend certain countries, I smile. There are very few non-Anglophone countries that are economically worth it for the average Nigerian. I'm specific on Nigerians because it seems to me that Françophone Africans can opt for a use_less place like Latvia provided they leave the African continent. Eastern Europe is only good if the prospective student wants to study a math based program on affordable tuition. Otherwise, South Africa is better off. Too many people go to use_less countries, thus wasting their precious years especially after graduation. Most of our people (I see their comments on Facebook) head to these countries where the young natives (owners of the country) cannot find good jobs. So where and how do you expect them to offer you - a Black African - a good job? No wonder many work at odd places that have no career directions or actual names. But then, this depends on the person's situation in Nigeria before he left. If you can finish your program, brilliant. Find somewhere else to build your career and has better entrepreneurial opportunities. What's even the pathway to Hungarian permanent residency? The Gods forbid I find myself in Eastern Europe other than to sell cocoa |

casualobserver: Everybody’s situation is different, what I don’t like is people making generalizations and leading people here in Nigeria astray. A man who comes from Ajegunle and finds himself abroad has a different perspective on London from someone who comes from a middle class background. A man who is a care worker in London has a different perspective from a doctor or an IT worker in the UK. A man who has an entrepreneurial spirit has a different perspective from someone who is born to be an employee. A man who had no contacts or access in Nigeria is different from someone who knows people. A man without citizenship will have a different experience from someone who doesn’t. All will look at relocating or remaining abroad differently. That’s why whenever I see people glorifying japa I come on to counter and give the other side.
Do you have papers? Are you a citizen or a japa? What kind of job do you do? What kind of environment did you come from in Nigeria? What sort of savings do you have? Do you have children? When you are glorifying living abroad let people know where you are coming from. That way they know why for you it is better and why it may not be better for them. Words on marble. It's very important people consider these points when reading through comments on social media. |

They have credit card debts, car loans, mortgage debt etc. plus many also have kids in school. That alone is why most remain. Meaning no available house to rent. Prospective landlords will change the purpose to short lets or commercial buildings such as offices, shops or warehouses. The result will be a scarcity of new houses for an increasing number of tenants. The solution to high rental prices are: lower interest rates, public housing by the government, ease of construction permits, improved road infrastructure to inner suburbs, improved public transport networks. Regulating house rents have never worked anywhere. It has been tried in Berlin, Vienna and New York, but didn't work. If it were to work, Hong Kong and Singapore would have implemented it.
