I have said it several times: it's high time LASG started building high rise buildings in Lagos to be able accommodate the increasing demand of accommodation in Lagos State. The habitable landmass of Lagos is very small; yet people will build bungalow on 2 plots of land. This is a waste of land.

I really want to commend Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila for the beautiful initiative he's carrying out in his constituent in Surulere, with regard to solving the housing crises in the State.

I am going to probably create a thread about it and post pictures.
Your suggestion is apt. If I hazard a wild guess, Lagos is the only metropolitan city with a small land mass where the majority of the buildings on the mainland - its most populous zone - aren't high rises.

Lagos needs to build up, but are the required infrastructure available (piped water, lift that work 24/7/365, constant electricity, piped gas etc?)

That said, what's Femi doing that you commend?

Lagos is Nigeria's smallest state with the biggest economy and it's the most populous.

Basic economics and geography.

That said, no professional living in Yaba earns 100K per month. Anyone who earns such and lives in Yaba has something wrong with him/her.

If I may ask, can an applicant from Nigeria include his/her spouse in initial work visa application?

Or

One has to land in Japan and work for some time before he/she can file dependant visa for his/her spouse?
Yes, that is how it is done. You get the work visa, get to Japan and work for at least six months, then file for a dependent visa for your spouse. But please check that visa category, I want to believe it mandates a certain level of Japanese proficiency before one can be issued the work visa. Even then, those sectors require a higher level of Japanese to get a job in them.

Here, the issue is not a job (good, okay and just there), but the language. At this point in the nation's economy, it is not the skin colour, but the language proficiency. Have the skills? Speak the language? You get the job.

It is why I advise language schools - run it for a year, then apply to companies or specialised colleges (should max of four years and max of three years if the student is smart and assidious enough).

This man is 51-years old. The way old Nigerian men are obsessed with women's virginity is quite creepy. You won't hear Micheal B.Jordan, Damson Idris, Aaron Pierre say something like this. It's always the most unattractive [Nigerian] men, smh.
To be honest, I would have no problem with this if the economy was flourishing. Ironically, in countries with flourishing economies, the old men aren't neck deep into a woman's vagina.

Honestly, Nigeria should become rich so some topics go to rest.

First time I would comment on a Reno's topic. He does make sense, but the issue I have with posts like his and others is that they never call out men's lascivious behaviours. If women are to remain chaste and men are to frolick around, how would the women be chaste? Do the men have sex with ghosts?

They don't realize that most of these procedures are expensive and highly unreliable. Nothing like being serious at a young age, settling down and raising a family.
It is prohibitively expensive in every part of the world. Some are pushing for governments to subsidise the procedure (Singapore does this), but it is means-tested.
HealthRe: Lady Left Heartbroken After All Her Frozen Eggs Fail Thawing Process After 10yrs by Gerrard59(m): 12:13pm On Aug 05, 2025
Facebook, Google and major American tech firms implemented this as a perk ten years ago, and the results today are not palatable. Many of those women did not find suitable men (according to their definitions) to marry. The eggs aren't as fresh as doctors desire. Today, many have remained single and childless (different from childfree).

Nothing beats nature as the stats are in nature's favour.

you made a lot of sense. Only difference in my point is I will allow my kids finish senior secondary school. Many Nigerians have not yet accepted the reality that degrees in Nigeria are currently a waste of time and resources. They still see those without degrees as illiterates where as most of them are the illiterates. Anybody that can read and write is no longer an illiterate. A friend that graduated two years ago and yet to secure a job was telling me she wanna go for masters in Nigeria this year, I told her I wouldn’t advise anybody to do Bsc talk more msc in Nigeria. She was now saying but me I did bsc why will I advise others not to. I told her times have changed and one has to change along with it. Some of us got degrees here because we were ill-informed.
Boys in Ikom, Cross River, are generating millions from cocoa sales. Indigenes with PhDs or running their PhD programs are abandoning it to engage in cocoa production.

Your friend needs to get at least one year work experience before embarking on a postgraduate course, else she would be overqualified for entry level roles - roles which fit her because she lacks work experience.

The argument is that the house could be used as a collateral to obtain a loan or the parents bequeath it to their children.

But you're right, building house for rent isn't a sure retirement-proof investment. Outside Lagos and Abuja, the returns are abysmal.

There must be public disclosure model for accountability in the higher education system. School departments must be required by law to publish publicly, their rate of graduate and the rate employed graduates from all departments after one year of graduation. .

Doing this will enable parents and their wards to make informed decisions regarding seeking admission and investing in such system.

Also, this statistic is needed as a matter of national security. Young adults cannot be left to waste away after graduation, while the schools smile to the bank. This is not how a society functions or progresses.
The government must be proactively involved in tackling this issue because a country with a large unemployed population would be deficient socially and economically.
It's well established in the US which has resulted in fewer admissions in art and humanities program. Many young Americans aren't interested in studying history or anthropology related courses.

The best thing is to have a strong math foundation. If the Babcock dude studied mathematics, his situation would've been different.

EVERYTHING is more expensive in Nigeria than most other countries because Nigeria is NOT productive DUE TO the massively manipulated and government controlled currency market. It's the same reason the ECONOMY in general will ALWAYS perform poorly. There's NOTHNIG that can be done to fix all these things in Nigeria UNTIL THE PEOPLE LEARN and accept the principles of FREE MARKETS and freedom in general. That's all there is to it, every other thing is detail.

Long ago I told you that before I moved to Nigeria, I went on my own small world tour. In 2010 and 2011, I spent 4 months in Italy, India and UK and I lived like an ordinary person in tiny villages and big city. I worked on farms and loaded cotton and loaded containers for export. Then I moved to Nigeria in 2011. My written record of expenses for the same QUALITY of goods and services showed that Nigeria was the most expensive place to live by faaaaar, it wasn't even close. Food in Nigeria is prohibitively expensive compared to India where food is as cheap as water. Also clothing, telecom and data services, I remember that very well....expensive in Nigeria, cheap in all other countries I visited. India has all kinds of factories operating in villages and big city, even in residential neighborhoods churning out all kinds of stuff, there's much more of such activity than in Nigeria.

We've gone over this before. Most rich Nigerians actually live abroad and I know this first hand. Or I can make an allowance and say a significant number of rich Nigerians that YOU THINK live in Nigeria actually live abroad. Muhammadu Buhari and his family is a prime example. To be ignorant of this is equivalent to the Nigerian conventional wisdom of 2011 to 2023 that "fuel subsidy doesn't exist" and "there's nothing like fuel subsidy" and the general misinformation about land ownership and property rights.

About running home to Nigeria, you see one big problem is most on this forum post anonymously. There's no way to verify anything. You can't weigh the commentary with their bona fides. If one of the engineers I know in Nigeria who earns $1K per day comes on this forum insisting that Nigeria is a good place to live, I can kinda understand that but then what am I supposed to think if all his adult children are living in UK and Canada? That's a real life scenario. That info tells a lot. So whatever.

Yesterday I listened to this -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBDKkZ6_410?si=TXs2m1Lu-8AT_2RA

One of the participants gave his real life salary as a nurse in Nigeria in 2022 - it was ₦33,000 per month or $88 at exchange rate of $1/400₦. Even if that rate is wrong, we can take it all the way back to 2014 when I know for sure the rate was $1=200₦ so that gives him at most $200 per month. Are you following? That is literal chicken change that any illegal immigrant working hard as a cook, nyash wiper, security guard or factory hand in the US/UK can afford to send to Nigeria every month. I know because I did it with such jobs.

Nurses in my small city here can earn from $54 to $70/hr as part time floaters, these are people who are called on short notice to cover when there's need. There's nurses that do ONLY this kind of work. Full time nurses right now are being recruited with cash bonuses of $20K to $30K. Even the nurse aides - the nyash cleaners - earn REGULAR FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT PAY of at least $20/hour and $30/hr as floaters. Where are you going to earn that kind of money as a nurse in Nigeria? Here you go https://www.wakemed.org/careers/nursing-careers/float-pool-and-contract-positions
Yes you will soon come at me with PPP....but the REAL CONVERSION that matters is that a nyash-cleaner today in the UK/USA can easily save $200 per month AFTER EXPENSES and remit to Nigeria. That's ₦300K. It's PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE that a new ABO in the consumer banking industry in Nigeria....that's a post that requires a university degree and at least 2 years experience....earns ₦800K/month. That's the real koko.

Anyway, those who want Nigeria can have it, it's all theirs to enjoy, the free and wanton sex is the main thing, I know Gerrard will be happy and that's enough for me.
Good Luck to Nigerians.
😂 😂

You got me there. Regarding sex itself, it is not free in any part of the world. If I am to put women in an account statement, I would categorise them as an expense. Womanising is an expensive hobby. My major issue with Nigeria is the security. People need to be able to move/travel freely without being attacked. The news I read about the happenings in Imo is scary. It is just painful and disheartening that our elites are doing nothing to solve the problem. Hope Uzodinma and Co. have finished that state.

As for salaries, I got to even know from an Instagram comment section that top law firms in Lagos don't pay as high as I thought. The excerpt from the comment section: "because me sef I wonder, 900k post call?? B&I , templars etc entering is about 380- above, boutique law firms you can see 150k, so entry level 900k that one isn’t true, except say 380k is base then other sources of consistent monthly income makes it 900k, I work in sustainability & legal & I’m 3 years into my career"

However, Mr Ibe, the salaries of those nyash cleaners you mentioned only makes sense if the money is sent home. $200 is nothing in the abroad. Yes, we have to look at PPP because the dollar is above the yen, should all Japanese run to the US? Koreans to the US?

That said, nurses really earn high in the US. It makes sense. So far from my research, it is the only place where a nurse can earn very well. The rest of the developed world don't pay so high. The US is kinda of blessed.

The truth is: everyone cannot leave Nigeria. I recall a tweet from a popular Internet personality - Ozzyetomi (a woman in her 30s) - who mentioned that one of the reasons some decide to stay/live in Nigeria is because they want their children to grow up amongst those who look like them. The same Ozzy has lived in New York. So, you see? There are reasons people prefer to live in Nigeria no matter the situation. The lady whose video you shared, where I saw that she lived in Saudi Arabia, it was revealed that she and her husband returned to Nigeria because of their children.

In another discussion, you made some points that made me realize that it's Nigerians living in non-Anglo countries that are MOST LIKELY to return to Nigeria. On the "social" topic, we discussed here - https://www.nairaland.com/8466482/want-japa-budget-20m-need/5#135998521

The notion of retirement to Nigeria is funny to me. It's not comporting to the reality I observe. Last Sunday, just last week, I got a call out of the blue from a secondary school mate. I attended an FGC, this person is from a high and mighty political family in Nigeria. We last spoke about 20 years ago, he was an upwardly mobile guy in the INVESTMENT banking industry in Nigeria, his company owns one of the top mutual funds. He retired near the top of his company, I guess he took early retirement.

He has moved to the USA and lives here permanently, in fact he's been living here since 2020. As I've related here, I know MANY other wealthy or well to do or upper middle class Nigerians who have done the same. My wife, her ENTIRE TEAM at the oil producing company where she worked in Nigeria have moved abroad over the last 10 years to USA, Canada, UK....including their SECRETARY. Many of these people got parting bonuses ranging from ₦150 million and up, ordinary engineers and such. And they left the country.

In my small city here, I know personally TWO retired Directors of oil producing companies from Nigeria who live here. One of Dora Akunyili's Deputy Directors when she was at NAFDAC retired and now lives in my town and attends my family church. Another secondary school mate lives in this same USA with his father who was a CBN governor. One of President Shagari's Special Advisers or Special Assistant retired to Texas and lived there till he died a few years ago, his son was also my classmate and we socialized a bit when I lived in Houston. I know of a real estate magnate in Nigeria who moved with his ENTIRE FAMILY, including grandchildren, to this same town I live in. One can only imagine the influx into major metros like Houston, NYC, Washington DC, Chicago, Dallas, Miami... and then UK the mother country!!! Does anyone believe President Buhari retired to his home in Daura? Hmmmm?

By the way, there was a mass return of Nigerians from the diaspora in the 1970s Oil Boom. Most made a whole hearted and permanent return, with no foreign passports or Green Cards. How did it go for them? Nigeria has an experience in this matter that anyone who cares can look into and glean information that can be used to make wise decisions today. It's interesting that it's RARE to find any commentary on that return, there's data but no one cares to do the research. Just like there's plenty of resources but the country is still the Poverty Capital of the World. grin

Good Luck to Nigerians.
Honestly, I wonder why so many of our elites and upper middle class citizens decide to reside abroad in their later ages. It calls for deep research and questioning. It is very odd for such to happen.

We got a suite at Radisson Blu V.I for around 800k ($530) a night. On getting there very late , they upgraded us to their “presidential suite” at 1.5 million per night. It was an upgrade so of course we didn’t pay the full 1.5

The “presidential” bathrooms had crusty edges. The towels had seen better day. The carpets didn’t seem to have been changed since it was built. You can tell it was originally built to be luxurious but the maintenance was not kept up at all. I wondered what the 800k room would have been like. And this was the case for two other places we stayed. Black Diamond Hotel in VI. They charged us 2 million naira for 3 nights (two suites) and I had to call them to physically remove one of the couches in one of our suites due to the smell. stains and cigarette burn marks. I’ve never in all my travels paid hotels that offered so little for the prices they charged.

It’s like they Google what American companies charge and slap those prices on their products and services without offering same standards or quality. This was the same for the other services I encountered. Almost like they are on the internet researching what Americans pay for goods and services so they can charge Nigerians the same. Lagos continental hotel VI somewhat lived up to the expectation but the downside is that you can’t comfortably come out and walk around the area without being confronted with wide open dark gutters with heavy stench. And that was supposed to be the good area 😰
Pardon my curiosity, was this visit during December and early January? If yes, the prices are fair. This is not to condone the ill-maintenance.

As for the bold, I am still at a loss why there are no covered walkways in our cities. Donald Duke was a gem. Calabar had covered walkways in almost every part of the city. Abuja does have walkways with a view of the nice gutters. grin

One night with room service my guy spent like 750k. And he was clear that this cost was like maybe a third over what he paid at Marriott hotel mexico. And a lot of people are kind of paranoid about hanging with family if family is not also loaded.

One of my colleagues lost his mil like that. Robbers came to the house for dollars. So someone in the family or house obviously leaked the info.
To be fair to Marriott and others, operating a hote,l especially of Marriott status is very expensive in Nigeria. The multiple taxes, high import duties on products, and the big one - providing almost every infrastructure needed to ensure optimal performance. I deliberately did not include salaries, especially of senior expats who were transferred from elsewhere.

However, demand exceeds supply, which is why an extension is being built beside the current building, and another Marriott (whether it is the same Franchise owner, I don't know) is being built in Abuja. So, notwithstanding the room cost, market is booming.

Based on the age definition of Gen-Z, I don't qualify. However, I grew up listening, reading and watching religious texts, music and books. But along the line, I saw how hypocritical, cruel and dishonest so-called religious people tend to be. They don't practice what they preach. Where things changed was when some of them defrauded my mom (I wasn't readily aware) and when I was aware, I fought them.

The way religion is practiced in Nigeria and by our people tends to be very hypocritical, unforgiving and disingenuous. Even at school, those you'd think are close to heaven by the way they portrayed themselves, one would hear tales about them that even you "the sinner" has never committed. Whether lecturers o or students o, they were outrightly dishonest. Additionally, the 2023 elections revealed a lot of hypocrisies and lies.

Furthermore, I live in a country where the majority don't follow Abrahamic religions and have learned that one can be good while not professing any religion. They do what they say.

And o, a lot of our religious clerics (speaking of Christianity) tend to be either criminals or Ogboni. I've heard tales even from core members of the church and I'm like, "I thought these folks are close to God?" Today, they enter church, tomorrow, they meet their juju man.

take it from me, there are Nigerians home and abroad with the experience. He's using whites not because the Nigerians can't do it, but they see it as a way to boost their economy by bringing themselves and retaining their importance in the country. By so doing, they are telling the people that Nigerians are incapable. imagine Indians here programing PLC all the way from India, and while i was speaking to someone in engineering field that Nigerians have people that could do the same, he didn't believe until he made his research.
Who are these Nigerians who have managed multinational refinery projects across the world?
