ADAMUdaCOWBOY: Oga, the used cars imported from Europe and america are not cheap. These oyinbo people often laugh at us because of the high price we pay for these "Belgium" cars. The prices for second hand cars in the US are posted on Twitter on a daily basis, and they are dirt cheap! Second hand cars are relatively affordable in the abroad. The key issues are continuous insurance, parking fees, maintenance etc. In return, in some countries, the public transport is top notch, most people (unmarried and those without children) don't see the need to own a car. |

lonelydora: The problem is those cars from the East are largely right-hand drive. Are you ready to do the conversion here in Nigeria?
Also, you don't get exactly the same model. Haven't you seen European-made and Eastern-made Camry, Corolla, Accord, Civic, Hiace, etc. Same engine and little difference in interior. Another issue is bad wagon mentality of our people. Even though they have same engine, but they believe they are not strong Most if not all mini-buses in Nigeria are sourced majorly from Japan. The conversion is done in Nigeria. |

TechAI: Thank you.
What prompted this thread were concerns about durability. You’re absolutely right about the pristine condition of the cars — especially when compared to those from the U.S., which are often accidented or flood-damaged.
My only hesitation has been around the durability of the cars. Something in me just felt they might be of lower quality or inferior in some way. Also, what about the issue of language barriers — like manuals and other information written on the cars? Why do you believe a car produced for the Chinese market will be less durable? Because it's China? The biggest car market? The world's factory? Also, your point about proximity does not hold. Texas to Nigeria is closer than Shanghai to Nigeria. |

foodlum: I come to China very often on business and I am currently here at the moment, having got here early last month. I can authoritatively state that most cars Nigerians import from the US, Europe and UAE are plentiful here in China. The Toyotas, Hondas, Nissans, Benz, Volvo, Audi, Range Rover, etc are all here and much cheaper. In addition, they are mostly in much better mechanical and structural condition because China doesn't have the system of selling salvage/accidented cars to the public like it is done in the US and Europe. And so there is a massive endless supply of pre-owned vehicles at bargain prices. There is a problem however. It is extremely difficult to export used vehicles out of China. The bureaucratic and governmental red tape involved is daunting. EACH vehicle requires an export license before it can be cleared by customs for export. The process can take almost 2 months in some cases and the cost is prohibitive. Sometimes a car is deemed un-exportable by the government and thus cannot be issued an export license. Those that have tried to circumvent this process by hiding the vehicles inside containers have paid a heavy price. Because of this, the massive pool of very clean and cheap used vehicles found all over China just sit down and waste away because no one wants to deal with the hassles involved in exporting them. This sounds logical. However, exporting second hand cars from Japan is relatively straightforward than what you describe in China. I think the pricing and the RHD are the reasons directly exported cars from Japan aren't popular in Nigeria. This is surprising considering all the mini-buses in Nigeria emanate from Japan and China. |

owobokiri: Trust America and her brothers.. The West has a special agreement with the Chinese government that prohibits the sell of popular Western brands straight to other markets without going through the parent owners of the car companies.
Infact, apart from the models from the indigeneous Chinese car companies, most western brands are very costly in China, and that includes the Japanese . This effects their second prices. As per the spare parts, most are already being imported from China .. That's absolutely okay. It doesn't have to be the government but the Western company itself as that's the controlling group. Why would China BMW over-ride a decision made at the German headquarters? Moreover, a significant proportion of the cars produced by Western companies in China are meant for Western consumers. |

Jman06: Blame the sense less Nigerian leaders who fail to prioritise that are supposed to blaze the trail in protecting human dignity have since joined in enslavement of Nigerian workers!
It's too bad! Why can't the government emulate the western societies where workers are paid uniform wages across board? There should be uniform wages for workers be they private, government or missionary employment. I wonder why non of our senators has ever thought it necessary to sponsor bills to make wages uniform for Nigerian workers across all sectors. Sorry, there cannot be uniform salaries across those sectors of employees. It does not work that way. People should be paid fairly and offered okay working conditions and perks. However, equal salaries isn't possible. A major reason why salaries are low in Nigeria aside from the poor economy is the population. Highly populous countries have low salaries because there are gazillions of people who are willing to even accept lower salaries for the same role. Whether Vietnam, China, India or Indonesia, the story is the same. We need high economic growth so that enough jobs are created, thus offering more opportunities for people to choose from. |

But there are many Nigerians who have lived in the abroad yet support our politicians and see nothing wrong in what they do. Teymanhenry: I think people misunderstand what the post truly mean. Some women with lavish lifestyles might have questionable income sources. If the boyfriend visits her two-bedroom flat and notices expensive items, he might wonder how she affords them on her salary. Worst case is if she's not working, that could raise suspicions about her financial situation. We know most of our girls na. Nobody go tell us That's not what she stated. She didn't bother to differentiate and even if she did, are we saying there are no women who earn legitimately? And when they do, shouldn't they enjoy their money? Buying washing machine, microwave, TV etc., isn't lavish living. These are basic white goods to ease daily needs. It's funny and pathetic how we are okay with our women (then girls) living off campus, sometimes in different states, but are apprehensive when the same women (now adults) decide to live alone while working. If these women no work, dem call them liabilities. Now, they do, it is still a problem. C'mon! |

In 2013, 500k would cover everything. When a dollar was like N200. I am really angry some people are used to poverty. This are not even luxuries, they are essentials. The mentality still prevailed during that period. Just that social media was not widespread for those views to be aired. And looking at the GDP growth rate then, it was over 5%. So, with the proliferation of social media and a worsening economy, we should expect more of these archaic views. Honestly, there would be a clear and growing divide amongst many people, not just on a financial basis, but exposure levels. People would have to marry like minds to avoid these scenarios. After all, that is how humans have been behaving ab initio - marrying people within their levels. |

Esthered: Where shold they stay?
A lady working in Lagos and earns well but her parents live in Ikorudu while she works at CBD should not rent closer to her workplace because she wants to be marriageable. Is aunty saying she should sleep under bridge or live in a dipilated house to be marriageable? Aunty doesn't know what a good interior does to one's mental health as a home is a place of relaxation and not TURMOIL.
My sister just bought a washing machine last month and doing her Masters while working and we've always known that laundry is a chore for her. She was squatting with an aunt but needed more space for herself which we deliberated from a place of concern in terms of security and NEVER marriage.
Pay attention to the ladies doing well here, you'll see that they achieved a level of comfort before saying I do and it raises their standard to seek for the best for themselves. If a lady who wasn't born a nepo works hard and is becoming something, the guy that wants her should also be working hard to be deserving of such woman as she too knows the value she has added and is adding to herself for a better tomorrow. It is the poverty/mediocre mentality Pastor Sam Adeyemi talked about. It is my prayer that Nigeria's economy grows rapidly so we won't have this conversation. This has been a topical issue since I started being on the web. It is cognitive dissonance that we preach single women should not be liabilties, yet at the same time don't want them to spend the money they earn on themselves and for their comfort. What APC has done to this country's economy is too bad. |

Foreign Affairs › Re: China Bans Onlyfans, Calls It Symbol Of Western Moral Decay by Gerrard59(m): 11:17am On Jul 24, 2025 |
The basis for banning TikTok gets clearer by the day. You cannot ban others' apps in your country, but expect yours to be given unfettered freedom in their countries.
Those asking for the Nigerian government to ban Bigo, OnlyFans and even TikTok don't know the slippery slope it would lead to. One, the sheer demand for sex by our men fuels the supply of girls who are willing to supply the needed services. Two, China is a largely homogeneous country and any taken decision is final. In an ethnically fractured country like Nigeria, it would be challenged.
But from the comments about banning lascivious apps and websites, that's how Sharia gradually starts. This Sharia you people are looking for, you would get it one day. |

Travel › Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by Gerrard59(m): 12:15pm On Jul 23, 2025 |
blackbriar: If i am not mistaken, the point-based system is for the HSP visa (Highly Skilled Visa). If you get 80 points and apply for the HSP Visa in say for example Y2024/25, you qualify to apply for the PR visa (eijuken) the next fiscal year Y2025/26.
With a Phd degree from a Japanese University, the points you easily qualify for towards the HSP visa are; 1. Phd Degree - 30 points 2. Graduated from Japanese University - 10 points 3. **Research achievements (3 papers) - 20/15 points
** a Phd graduate must publish 3 papers to graduate in Japan. so your papers automatically gives you 15/20 extra points.
So phd from a Japanese university gives you additional easy - 55/60 points before considering other mandatory criterias such as age, salary, professional career etc. So with these almost all phd graduates in Japan are over-qualified for the HSP Visa (80 points) . Thats how phd graduates in Japan quickly qualify to apply for PR
My humble 2 cents Largely correct with some modifications. You don't have to be on the HSP visa to apply for the point system. The standard bunseki and kokusai gyomu visa status also qualifies one to apply for PR via the point system. It's not a must to publish three papers as a PhD student before graduation. This depends on the university and most importantly, the department/supervisor. Nevertheless, the more papers, the greater the points. |

As phd graduates over exceed the points requirement ofr HSP visa(highly skilled visa) After holding the HSP vsisa for 1 year, you can apply for PR. Too easy, no country does it this easy. It's the same with the point based system and it has its peculiar requirements. The younger one is, the greater the points. It's not so automatic after a year. But yes, compared to peer nations, it's very easy and straightforward. |
