Heard about the closure weeks ago and the circumsatnces surrounding the closure;learnt that some students had gone to represent the school at the NUGA games and exams were to begin the day they came back, which many felt was not fair to the students and of course, the gang of irresponsible student leaders-who find their way into leadership from time to time in my dear alma mater- capitalised on it to protest and demand some of their usual stuffs, inspired by books on marxism and stuffs that have no place in real life!

other doors. For instance, there are talks about bringing two premiership
referees for this year;s super four.

what the NFL needs is development and not isolation. We can learn a thing or two from thois interaction.
The point to know is that after paying about 20 million in hard currency, you should
be able to get some incentives,which was not coming from DSTV because they do not have any
commitment to our development as a people, They are simply into business!HITV does not mean that
DSTV closes down.they have loads of other programmes but I like the vision of the people behind
HITV and what it portends for Nigeria and the development of the media industry.

There have been quite a few interesting posts since this debate began but I think I need to add a few things too. The chap behind the company Hitv is a lawyer, Toyin Subair. I have been following news and reports about all the right to the EPL, since it was unbundled from DStv, starting from August and there are a few things that I think we have not considered in our discource.

First, the guy used to be something of a legal consultant to Dstv so he should know them better. The whole pay tv business as it is being operated does not pay Nigeria and Nigerians. The money that people pay help to fund contents for television and develop that industry.Do you know that the executives of the EPL were billed to visit Nigeria as part of the developmental package that are incentives to the broacast right; one or two premiership team(s) will have a pre season tour in Nigeria(all of them wont go the USA or Europe if they see cheaper alternatives) members of the NFA/NFL went to England with the Hitv team when the rights were facilitated. They are talking about some collaboration. Thing is, if you pay that kind of money, some things should come as extras.

how did supersport benefit our football in a developmental way apart from showing us matches? Ajax has an affliliate team in Cape town. Are there more football potentials in SA than Nigeria? These are isues that we must face as a people, not class assess to pay TV or the now commmon Naija bashing that people fall back to.

We must hope that the effort of this ambitous people will help facilitate assess to infromation and entertainment as well a develop our televisison content.


Dstv has done a great job of showing us great channels;what we dont know is that the money we pay help develop the content for their country's television and entertainment.
Invariably, we have to take our destiny into our hands and the time is now.

And people who have been talking about high cost of business in Nigeria. DStv is snot a gsm company and sso, even though they use generators, they do not deploy it the way Gsn companies do per cell sites.

Hitv will be charging 3,000 per month. Apart from the foreign station, they will developing our local television stations sthrough adequate funding to provide content for all Nigerians.
I know many wil start the Naija bashing because they have a false sense of the posibilities amidst all our challenges but I believe that these thing can fly.Nigerians are smart people and we have all it take to pull this one off.

I have attempted to do something with hot air balloon before and I had even made contacts in S.A. You could look at corporate clients that want to use it for adverts and promotions.that way, you can cover your cost and get something back.

I dont know about your enquiries but I do know that it does not do well in temperatures that are above 30 degrees C.And I think the pilot cost is chanrged per hour. This is besides the regulatory agnecies approving it and for which area.It will definitely be for leisure and not anything else.

I agree with the setiments shared by so many people about the topic and it is true to say that it is easier said than done. There is a word that best ecapsulates the requirement for one benturing out and it is called 'guts' I have had friends who,trying to ape my partners and I, dumbe their jobs and started out on buisness with all the enthusiasm in the world.months later, they are writing application for empployment. One of them is a very classic case cos he was always telling us what decision to take before he decided to start his own business. Within a few months, he had gone back to  apid employment with the intention to 'return back soon'. Needless to say his text book advices have become non existent.

Staring one's business comes with the initial sacrifice that any great thing requires. I know days when we (the three of us partners) will go home and be wondering where money will come from the next day to run the office but we were faithful to our dream and we have always had great faith in God, that He will do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.


We are not there yet but the experiences of the last few years have expanded our minds and the activities of people like Jimoh Ibrahim and the likes have shown that we can get there too.


Bottomline:  IT is all left to you. It may not be smooth but you need guts to hang in there with your dream. you probably will realize that the probelms you will face may not be adequately provided for in those management textbooks. When people who have taken the plunge speak to each other, there are isues not adequately commmunicated in any language that they are saying. When i saw the title of this post, I was expeceting indepth analysis of the wolrd view of the candidates but with the way it is going, what is happening is an online version of the thuggery that has characterised our politics in Nigeria.

I have listened to pactically all the major candidates. I am impresed with the pedigree of femi Pedro and what he can bring in terms of exposure;  jimi Agbaje's  passion has won me over and Fashola is very pragmatic if I were to really choose base on our country's politcal history. Obanikoro for me does not quite cut the picture of a governor yet. May be I will have to listen to him more. I watched him on silverbird yesterday and I was not too impressed. I don't know how he did it in DC but he spent the better part of the interview not able to articulate himself.

He seems to have the confidence though but he really has to connect with people who want to know if he has the mental capacity that a Jimi Agbaje, Pedro or Fashola has.

it is wonderful to know that there are real women out there who have come to appreciate men the way the post suggests.

I have a very terrible experience with that virus but I found avast to be very helpful.I am not too sure the version I had but it replicates folders in My document. Avast will prove to be useful.

The eagles were disappoiting yesterday.Ghana took the game to them and they really deserve their win. Thank God it was a friendly and not one of those qualifiers.It is a wake up call for the Eagles that every match is not a training session.

Every Ghanian I have met seem to be making a ritual of this match.I am looking forward to them losing against their big brother (deservedly) Nigeria on tuesday and see how they will take it.

It must really be very wonderful for them seeing that their players are now in the spotlight in Europe ( a phase we Nigerians have passed after USA 94) and they think they can beat the world. The match is only three days away and then they will know that Khaki no bi leather.

I wondered why Lagos state did not realease its figures from the parallel census is conducted but I have been informed that it will not do so for strategic reasons as they will have to wait for the break down where the anomalies will be detected.As I suspected, the break down will be released months after the election.

A few pointers though;if the number of immunized children between 0-5 years old in Lagos stands at 3 million, how in the decent world did Lagos have a total figure of 9 million?

If there are 26,000 divisions in Lagos for the census, the average figure for each area according to the biggest joke in Nigeria's history.These are times I wished Fela were alive.It will really make a very interesting album.

People.let us reason. Lagos alone consumes about 50% of the energy generated in Nigeria.I know we are passionate about where we come.I am not from Lagos but some things are just not easy to lie about.

Nigeria is the sore thumb in the world now. All over the world, places of great economic activity attract the most people.It is just a fact of life! The people behind these figures will not release the break down.once the figure has served its purpose, it will be forgotten and the next government will conduct another census.

Census figures should not be dramaatically different from the others we have had in the past.How come Lagos got the most INEC registration machines? most vaccines?even the census itslef was a logistic hell in Lagos and the Lagos state government had to bail out the NPC from the shame of a census that was almost predetermined.

Theis sham will be seen for what it is.let them release the braek donw if they can.

I have heard some people said something about some part of  Ogun state being counted as Lagos and that it may have accounted for the 'reduced' figure that Lagos has but if that is the case, the Ogun state government should not be complaining about the figure 3million plus figure given it. Either way, people living on the fringes of Lagos (Ojodu, Akute,Abule Egba)were not counted for either Ogun State or Lagos.

The census figure is laughable!It stands logic on its head.IT is a determined effort to prove that there are more people in certain parts of these countries than other parts. It was a ruse not intelligently carried out.

Those talking about the mortality rate  are either not living in Nigeria or choose to ignore the realities of our existence in this country. mortality rate is not lower up north with its harsh climate and low literacy rate than the south.It is just a fact!

THis census figure is  scandal that will embarrasss this government more than any other government in the past. People- and that includes the Lagos State governemnt- are waiting for the breakdown, which may not be realease until after the general elections.

the NPC will now tell us where those figures came from.Technology can now make these facts verifiable.It is not like in the 60s.Times have changed.

The figures came up for discussion today on AIT and I learnt a few things about the whole thing. All experts say that the population figures beat logic but we still have to wait for the break down which is why the Lagos state government will not release their figures yet.

The break down Will state the enumeration areas and the figures that were counted there. If for instance a particular figure was ascribed to a certain area.The satelite images of the areas can be used to dispute it depending on the number of houses there.The Lagos State government has said that it has over 4.5 houses in Lagos.

The break down will get very interesting.In the past, there were no scientific means to make clarification but now, things are different. If the NPC, has anything to hide, the break down will never be released but if it is sincere about the results, the facts will prove them right or wrong.

All known assumption about human habitation and behaviour still state that Kano cannot have more people than Lagos.I am not from Lagos but this result is telling people that they are too daft to reason.Landmass? IF that is the logic, Sudan should have more people than Nigeria.

Study the west coast of Africa and you will see how people live along the coast where economic activities take place.The chances are that indigence of Kano will come to Lagos to trade than the indigence of Lagos going to Kano!

Wow, I have  read quite a few posts and in all honesty, I am amazed and somewhat  'impressed' that people have found reasons to justify the fact that Lagos has a lower population than Kano. Life itself  is  against that  theory. Everything we see  and   experience  in our day to day activities say it is wrong. Lagos should be  millions ahead any other state. Land  mass is not significant if  they are  not occupied!

How many ports does Kano have?How many of  Nigeria's big companies  have their head offices in Lagos.Let us ask the GSM companies about the number of calls originating  from Lagos comparedto Kano. How many  Sky scrapers(that people actually  live in) are in Lagos compared to kano. What is the number  of  built up areas?Do you  know the amount of waste(from  people) that  Mushin alone generates is more than many states in Nigeria combined together?We  can go on and  on.Lagos controls a great deal of  economic activity that attracts people and  that clearly  is why people think the figures are wrong.

what the census figures show is that the organisers have given rationale Nigerians a good reason not to take them serious.The manner is which the president received and approved it is also suspect.

For those who saying that northerners travel for the census from lagos. It was not only northerners that traveled; others traveled as well.How  come the figures did not  blow up in other states.

You guys are crediting the home video industry-which is comprised of some informed professionals and loads of uninfromed people- with a great of knowledge.
At the risk of sounding crude, the industry is still being seen by the people who have given themselve the right to be its leaders more as a commodity market than marketing highly creative and well thought out projects.

Come to Folwuyo Bankole Street in surulere where the popular winnis Hotel( Home viedo personnel hangout) is and you will have an idea why our home video industry really needs truly creative people in all its ramifications.

I have faith in our capacity to do more. yesterday, I Stayed up late to watch a Nigerian musical programme and I was so impressed with the improvement that has occurred in that sub sector of our entertainment industry.The videos that I saw can compete with so many we see on channel o and MTV.Simply because they used those channels as benchmark.

Seun said something about the absence of competition and I couldn't agree more. We only need the people who have done these wonders to musical videos to take their skill into the movie genre and we will see improvement.Me think that is what is going to happen soonest, when bright and intelligent creative people will take over our film/home video industry deploying quality thoughts and personnel that all of us Hollywood buffs will have to take notice.

I think I get your point but that will be more subjective from the individual posters than a general perception. My opinion is shaped by the era that preceded the home video rush;the more expensive and professional celluloid era where The Ogunde's and Eddie Ugboma help sway. If they can be that disciplined to accomodate subtlety and other rationale disposition that makes films watchable, the people in our age should do more. Now, I am not talking of format-whether celluloid of digital- here cos that will be another issue altogether but pure artistic imagination.the type we read in our plays, where 'suspension of disbelief' is expected in works of art.

I do not belief that the movies are created for cultural reasons.It sound like a very convenient excuse.At the level of editing, even takes that are otherwise okay have been known to be taken off to give the 'work' (and this is how any finished work of creativity should be seen) a wholesome look and appeal.

I think that much of the films that are the subject of this discourse have been produced and put together by people lacking in this skills.WE have taught much of west and sub saharan Africa that we dont wait on granst from the EU to produce celluloid based films and we can take over with videos that are more effective given the economy of our region.My point and cry is that we make some impact with the cotent too!

IN the university, I watched loads of plays and I am friends with many performers.I am familiar with teh amount of work that goes into a production.What I see most times when I am forced to watch is a mockery of true acting.


Many Nigerians love to watch their Home video out of nostalgia raher than a pure desire to see a great film.I may be wrong but that is what I have noticed.The point is that we are able to do much more.We have given the world great people in literature and other forms of art, we have enough from our rich minds to generate contents for our films, if we start by telling ourselves that we are not there yet!

it is then and only then that our films can reach more people and earn several times what is earned now.

I think the issue is not really that people trash Nollywood. There should be a degree of improvement over the past few years.We really can't stay at this 'we are the next big thing ' bus stop and seek progress.what I hear mostly about the home video industry in Nigeria is all about how big it is and not the quality of the production.

practitioners must demand and implement very high standards.In the music industry for example, you will notice that there are lots of improvement in production of videos and even the music because some of the practitioners know that they now have to compete with artistes from all over the world.we are evolving no doubt. But much of the home video industry has been static in terms of development. We really must thank God that it creates job for people  but the content and the quality thereof is appalling. based on the examples I have given about the music industry where competition has created better videos, what the people who control the industry should be is to embrace other professional who will help bring some quality into their production.

This may necessarily mean longer time in production and more standards from casts and crew but it will make our films better.Ifyou have a storyline that iinvolves lawyers, get some lawyer to consult on the script; get copywriters to title the films;get graphic designers to iinterpret your theme in good posters-not the nearest business center Of course this means more money but it also means more coverage in terms of demography.

I will agree to a very large extent with the view that most of these Nigerian Home videos are targeted at people who have accepted a compromise in what should have been called quality television or film production.

I am only thankful to God that the industry has created jobs for many people in Nigeria.I do not own any Nigerian VCD or DVD even though I own loads of foreign films. (though I intend to collect all TK's works this New year break) Until recently when someone said I was being too hard, I has a theory that If one watches too much Naija videos, it is usually an indication of a very low IQ (A theory, I said).I simply cant imagine the mental torture one will have to go through watching any of the many films that are manufactured daily.

I live in a part of Lagos where I have limited access to some of these producers and Directors and To be very frank with you, there is no way they are going to produce a better film.They just stumbled on 'this industry' and decided to settle down. Not much thinking is done and not much is manifest in the films produced.

The fact that what should be deduced by the viewer is explained( and some times used as sound track/commentary) is not in appreciation of the viewers but a deficiency on the part of the movie makers. I have been used as an extra in a movie without my consent as cybercafe in Bode Thomas by a director who felt everyone in the cafe will be glad to be in his movie. AS we went about our business , cameras were placed all around us and we all came to feature in that film.

There are a few good films out there I believe.I just don't have the time to find them.I have limited my 'must see' to TUnde Kelani; 'tolerate to 'Tade Ogidan and Amaka Igwe'; 'if you have time to kill -Charles Novia!

One of the defects of our educational system. A few months ago, I was invited to am alma mater and I went with two people.one is an entrepreneur whose business runs into million every year;the other is a banker.When they were introduced to the gathering of almost a thousand undergraduates,there was so much applause for the banker the moment his bank was mentioned and the applause for the business owner was barely audible. The banker-who daily dreams of owning his own business was so shocked that people will accord more respect to him than a guy who owns his own business.

That really is what the educational system has made people to become.I have owned my own business along with my partners for years and I think it requires just as much energy to do it your own way as it is to work in a high paying job. The whole concept of security that the pay packet guarantees can sometime be a myth.

As tempting as it is to jimp into either camp, I think what you need right now is to really take a decision that shows that you are willing to take responsibility for your life. I know that 5k is very small but as someone said, weigh your options. I have friends who have nevr experienced what it means to ever earn that low and if they were on this forum, they'd prolly say it is impossible. Since I started out that low and now own my own business, I have a fairly different perspective. The only category of people you should take serious are people who have had to make the choices you are faced with given the kinds of background you have.

The worst thing that can happen to you is to be unemployed over a period of time that it makes unemployable. is this job very close to where you live? Are there other perks factored in somewhere? Does it offer good experience in the line of your careergoals in life? Do you get ant form of support at all from home? what other things can you occupy yourself with within the time you will get another job? Does it prevent you from getting some other job or creating other oppurtunites?

These are some of the questions you must sincerely ask.Its your life bro! anyone can say what they like!

I was almost tempted to re post my earlier post months back when this topic came alive. It is not a question of location but How people respond to the location and environmnt they find themselves. Every nation has its challenges and the people who dwell and prosper in them must be people who recognise how to excel against all odds.That is what separate ordinary people from the extra ordinary people.

As an enterpreneur, Naija is a dream land.Any true enterpreur will tell you that. So many of my freinds see problems but I see the chance to create and sell solution and if you all observe the new generation of business owners, they are doing just this-using the very same institution condemned on this thread to make head way and succeed.-

Was IN Calabar a few weeks ago and even though it is my first time, I was in love with the place immediately.For someone who has lived all his life in Lagos and a schooled in Ife, Calabar is really cool.I am looking forward to spending Christmas -which is something I never do-there and the carnival and all.

As far as I am concerned-and I am an Ife grad through anf through,unrepentant-it will have to go to University of Lagos.All the great Ife people in here, you know that is the truth.If it is parties and aristos and all those stuff, I will give it to Lag;they are way ahead of everyone but If it is  reading and getting it into your head that you have to be the very best in all forms of human development, I dare anyone to challenge great Ife!

No institution in Nigeria jas then benefit of the kinds of social connection that UNILAG has.They are in the nation's entertainment capital.They see it all.If they are to leave their campus and organiza an event,they have loads of location to choose from,sponsors,media and others.It is just logical.UNILAG is the party school of Nigeria.
