izzou: Quick question: If the fares were increased, would you still consider taking it? Or would you drive?
Ask yourself this question...The people who take uber to work, how were they going to that same work before uber came to Nigeria?
Festac to VI is #2000 to #2300. Raise it to #4000 and see those riders vanish. The ridiculously low fares is what is keeping uber, drivers and partners in business
People requesting for rides at the airport: Are airport cabs not convenient? Why are they requesting uber then?
People have been taking airport cabs and yellow cabs (which were expensive) since forever. tell me bro, how were yellow cabbies making their monies..i remember how they used to do shakara untop dead rickety car ooo, yet you will beg dem to agree to carry you ..do you know alotta does men have built their houses from driving yellow cabs before uber came? tell me who paid for their fares? Bro when uber started, do you know how much the drivers and partners were making? im not saying that the fares should not be cheap but HABA ..this cheap? Every sound business man tries to knock down price to build more clientele reach but these fares are ridiculous..very very ridiculous..if these fares are increase a little bit, trust me no rider will go anywhere...people love the comfort as well as the cheap fare but when taking okada or other uncomfy means of transport becomes more expensive than taking an aced car then i begin to worry. its simply because the drivers are not together plus the high employment rate hence this expliotation by these companies..Nigeria is their goldmine.. Festac to VI can be 3300, is that too much to ask? even the 4k sef rider will go..abi how much airport cab wan take? iz better to do less than 20 trips in a month and make 100k than doing 100 trips in the same time frame and make same amount. atleast depreciation go slow. The fares are ridiculously cheap..too cheap |

izzou: I've been reading everyone's opinion on strikes and all that. But here's my take on the issue
IT CANNOT WORK. THE DAY IT WORKS, ITS OVER FOR E-HAILING IN THIS COUNTRY
Let us look at it from the App companies view
1) They have so many cars on the platform. Bolt has over 2000 cars registered. The only they can supposedly keep all of them in business is to get more rider. Yes, MORE RIDERS. And how can that be achieved? Low fares
2) The primary reason (I stand to be corrected) why a large number of people use uber and bolt is because IT IS CHEAP. Forget comfort that we all shout. Gbagada to Ikeja is like #1000. Even a bike or Danfo won't charge that for a charter. Some of the riders you pick have cars in their compounds, yet they request you, and yoh think it's comfort? Nah I don't think so
Imagine Uber and Bolt increasing the fare. A lot of us here won't do 20 trips in a month. Look at your ride history. It's filled with trips from #500 to #1500. Increase the fare and see all those people disappear
We live in a Third World, where the gap between the rich and poor is wide, and where the percentage of low income earners are far more higher than we can imagine
Uber/Taxify can only survive here if they make the middle class and low income earners a priority. Very sound write up but a tad flawed. India and Nigeria are very similar..the issues we face in this country are faced in india hence economists love to do comparative analysis with both countries Uber prices are cheap everywhere they establish. ,they thrive on comfortability and affordability but in Nigeria the fares are ridiculously cheap, so cheap that even some riders will pity drivers..I disagree that if fares are increased a bit rider will leave..alotta people take the trips not just because it's cheap but for convinence..personally I take it when I don't wanna drive not because of cost. Yes fares must be kept at a low rate to ensure more riders board their services but not ridiculous as it is now...its ridiculously low bro..uber/taxify r exploiting the desperation of the Nigerian youth dats all |

Xneg: It appears strike worked in the USA It must always work bro. Drivers hold the key to revenue for ehailing companies, not riders..there will always be riders but wil there always be drivers? the end users never go on strike but the producers do..,the state of the union is weak, selfish interest won't make it work here...everybody just wanna drive and make money to feed or save up... It typical Nigerian mentality, rich man build big house, get big dog, with big fence and big gate , he feels his protected against armed robbers until dem go use slap awake am up for em room. |

izzou: Nigeria's problem boils down to so many factors: Poverty, hardship, Means if survival, Not organized, tribal differences, religious differences, greed and so on
It's very easy for any leader or employer to exploit any of these options
The reality: A strike is necessary in Nigeria, but it can't work. That's the truth Nigeria's problem are very similar to India ..india has alotta tribes and their cast system cannot be rivalled in the whole world ..yet strike worked and is working perfectly there Its the same system that produces same results bro..the principles employed in engineering in the West can be replicated in the East..yes sometimes systems can be twerked to suit specific environments but the foundation remains the same...the problem is the people occupying a land mass not the land mass..if you relocate Nigerians to China and vice versa..in 50 years China will be Nigeria and Nigeria will be China |

izzou: This part got me. the drivers in those parts of the world hold these ehailing company's by jugular, literally. There was a time they were clamouring for leave allowances similar to regular workers when they are not driving ..didnt follow the news so dont know it it was granted. |

brogxy: Our people here will say those on strike are lazy and not ready to work. Such a massive strike it will be. anything that's been enjoyed today, was paid in full by those that came before us. Everybody wants to migrate to America but forgets that America was once a land of outlaws and great violence. Men paid for the peace and progress enjoyed in that land and most often than not, with their blood. |

pope191: Real fact except mean riders... Like the lady I carried last week from omole phase one to magodo isheri, she was rude on the phone but after taking 2hrs nap (don't blame, Some Gee gave me 3k Ty after 1700 trip plus 300 change, so napping is allowed), who cares about rider rudeness or destination, I just need a trip... Got to a number before her own, already placing a call to make her know I'm close to reduce waiting time, she raise her voice "Oga call me once you get to my gate", humble me, OK ma! As ride proceeds, she demand to get to few places before final destination, dough it hovers around same axis, as fate we have it, I end trip and it was 3300. Madam voice "I can not pay such, what is it call again, app error abi, 3300 ke", I just crack internal smile, are you a driver? Or when did rider start complaining of app error Rider; u r not talking Me; ma, what do u want me to say, as u can see a trip of 5 mins, we end up spending almost 2hrs, I did not off d engine or a/c (show her fuel gauge) Madam shake her head and did transfer.. I pity her next driver, if d app fail, d driver should just forget it, negotiate can not work for her. |

tunlapapa: Start early? What do you say about this when talking about starting early? I am still online and this is what I have made so far. Some days are like that brother, that today is slow does not mean tomorrow will be...furthermore, you can also ask for positioning techniques from the experienced hands. I spoke to ogunvic and Romeo personally before I started driving and learnt a lot from the thread.. I didn't stay in the same place for more than 30 mins... But basically some days are slower than others but your gross at the end of the week or month is what matters. God bless you hustle |

double0seven: You made 95,000 revenue in one week. Now one wonders who to believe that this e-hailing biz is no more paying. They say jesus-boy is an agent for Uber. Abi u don become agent for Bolt ni? Truth is the business is OK for drivers with appropriate rental esp if the car is yours. But as someone rightly said, the work labour is not commensurate with the pay. Fares are ridiculously cheap..this revenue could have easily been doubled with the right fare..driving tells on the body but puts food on the table regardless. When I was driving I target trips becos in my small mind 10 trips equalled 10k base...of course iz not always d case as you could make more or less in trips but drivers should focus on trips turnover..if you start early in a day you should make it...tho iz tough iz not the toughest job vis a vis pay..ask labourers |

Chuwaa: True, from my house to church is usually 1,000 to 1200, I was surprised seeing 800-1000 yesterday and the trip eventually came to 888. I just de pity the effort drivers go through, the wear and tear on the car etc. From Eko hotel to Iganmu, 1000. As long as the fare keeps getting low, many car owners will keep their car and choose ehailing. Rainy season is here, many Lekki residents will abandon their cars and use uber more. the prices will keep on reducing...uber knows the drivers just wanna drive and make a living so the price reduction is to rake in more riders..for uber, they see only the riders unlike in saner climes where riders and drivers are seen But what do I know |

Agreed uber is slavery in Nigeria but y r people still doing it? D point is it puts food on the table. Now weather the guy na uber staff or not I don't know and don't care. I know people who have similar story lines..this slavery put food on a young families table..he wasn't rich but he lived above minimum wage..thus particular guy worked hard with his dead toyota tiny light received insults from riders but kept up the hustle..he worked his ass off..had cash to feed and repair his car..he complained, he was bitter but was grateful he could provide for his family, he continued because he had nothing else. Some days he asked me for 20k for working capital but returned it as at when due Behold he got an invite for NLNG , an application he started almost 2 years before..now his gainfully employed earning alotta cash and being hosted in 5 star hotels whenever he travels on training..he was in lagos for a training and we caught up on old times..his a hard worker. The only solution to slavery is striking.,do u know uber drivers in a state in America wanna strike? But we being Nigerians take a lotta rubbish..we r satisfied just surviving, please this slavery is all some people have..leave it for them.,if you don't like it, stop driving. I maintain my belief, anyone who is hungry to survive and put food on the table will do well in ehailing, u might not make 100k a week but u will eat, you might not have excess but u will have to feed while you strategise on the next move. And if the car is yours, then the odds are in your favour. |
