Jamesclooney: The phrase “over-promoted and under-qualified” springs to mind. If she were an ordinary individual making such remarks, she would be openly mocked. However, as the leader of the Opposition, she’s receiving attention and stirring reactions everywhere. I find it hard to envision her path to No. 10. She lacks widespread popularity, political acumen, and the ability to read a room (lunch are for wimps and sandwich is not a real food). Let’s see how she expects the Conservative membership to secure the votes she needs. I, for one, can’t wait for this chapter to close and for her to be relegated to the dustbin of history. This one real too? 😂 aah the babe na original naija girl and I can agree that sandwich may not be real food as an African man myself but no be everything dem Dey talk for outside aunty kemi edakun abi which kind wahala we enter bayi |

Cyberknight: Oh, people may be fiddling the benefits system, but that's not what I was driving at. I'm focusing on the issue of health and care worker-led immigration. I'm talking about the fact that Farage and co are able to bang on about high immigration and the government keeps playing into their hands. They need to defang Reform by actually doing something along the lines of: Here's an increase and improvement in pay and benefits for care workers, taking them up to NHS HCA levels, for instance. We'll take away the H&C visa for care workers for 6 months and watch and see if the already resident population picks up the slack. That sort of thing.
Otherwise, leaving Reform to keep making the running with this issue of immigration is going to sink Labour, while they continue to tinker around the edges. They can increase deportations of out-of-procedural options people as high as possible, but the public is not paying attention to that. They need to do something along the lines of when Sunak shamelessly came out to announce that they were whacking up IHS to pay NHS staff. Maybe they could have tied their non-walking people NI increase to that, for instance. Effectively you tell the people that managing immigration means everyone has to step up. It’s all politics and no one or politician will ever come out to say the truth after all dependents of both students and care workers are no longer allowed, salary thresholds for skilled workers are sky high so what’s the next thing they want to cook up or cut again. We are just dealing with lazy and intellectually bereft politicians who see nothing but immigration to latch on to rally up their base for votes and it won’t stop soon. Just like Trump who said today that the economy was not the major reason for his victory but the border. Already he’s already admitting that bringing down inflation will be difficult to do after all the grammar. phew |

Cyberknight: I want Labour to deal with this social care staffing issue once and for all (not going to happen, I know). They should try offering care workers good pay commensurate with the job and then see how many Brits languishing on the benefits rolls would be happy to get out of bed to take up the jobs. Then they'll truly have a chance to spike Reform's guns once and for all, otherwise try to stop their inexorable march to power in 2029.
I'd prefer the UK not to have these high levels of unskilled immigration because it simply gives the Faragists all the more ammunition to fight with. And ultimately, when they do get into power, they'll take it as a licence to be as nasty as they want to be, which'll end up taking us to a different level akin to US-style polarisation and all it brings. Sir many of these people you think are languishing on benefits roll are actually working doing cash in hand jobs to evade taxes, as long as those unskilled jobs are cash based they will be picked up by many. Benefits on one hand, raw cash on the other hand. Like we say in naija if you don’t gerit forget abou rit. Too much deception everywhere. |

Zahra29: The facts paint a different picture.
According to govt figures, both skilled worker visas and health and care visas are down quite significantly compared to the same period last year.
In November, the Home Office received 4,100 skilled visa applications from foreign workers, the lowest number since January 2022 and 2,000 fewer than the same month last year.
There were also just 1,900 applications for heath and care worker visas - down from almost 10,000 in November 2023 - plus 3,800 applications to bring dependents to the UK, data released on Thursday shows.
Over 80% drop in health and care visas: So what’s the complain now about net migration and where is the almost 1 million data coming from? Or is someone lying? This is the argument I was making sometimes last year when all those bogus figures were being thrown around. I have always maintained that migration figures should be well segmented according to visa classes which is what you have just done here. All the hue and cry last year was about student visas and healthcare visas which were born out of valid needs. I said then that if we looked at skilled workers visas the numbers were much lower. It’s obvious politicians chose the stats that will always favour a particular narrative now the conservatives have to show stats to prove to the public that they brought down figures while Labour have to show their own stats to prove that it was the Torries who increased net migration. Nonsense Uk has never been that generous with skilled workers visas. It was the care and student visas borne of Brexit pressure that was used to score political cheap points last year. |

Let's just be praying that Tinubu doesn't lead us enter where we no know. Because sincerely, as much as i truly support him, it's healthy to have quality opposition and options. This is clearly lacking. It's fast turning to Lagos politics in a way, faster than expected. We are not a people of strong convictions, all we do is shouting on social media. I find the whole attâche thing nauseating. NIDCOM and that woman at the head of it are shameless and they’re making us all look bad.
I don’t know of any Nigerian that went about telling people oh do you know the new Conservative Party leader is a Nigerian? There are Nigerians in the top echelons of many global and national institutions - she’s not the highest profile and will not be the last.
My issue with her is that if you want to disclaim Nigeria feel free to do it and do it entirely, not that every time you open your mouth about Nigeria it’s to say something that paints Nigerians in bad light. If you don’t want to be good PR for Nigeria, then don’t be bad PR either. Àbí ?
Saying that, I recognize that it's her lived experience to express as she sees fit, so she can carry on, and we will also continue calling out her hypocrisy. I tire o imagine okonjo iweala denigrating Nigeria at every opportunity or that wally guy in Joe Biden cabinet saying all sorts. |

jedisco: Hehe... more gist is needed. Do you mean those who picked up care roles after the last change can apply for dependents without meeting the salary treshold?
Overall, I think Kier Starmer would bring down numbers not because of what he says but because of his disposition. E.g with education, lower number of international students (who subsidise locals) means local students have to pick up the bill if their numbers are reduced. Significantly reduced income from migrant workers mean a higher tax bill both of which he has had no issue effecting.
The difference with Starmer is that he is looking to deviate from migration-focused narrative of recent PMs and does not want immigration to the buzzword of his government.
Oddly, the best thing for migration would be a government promising huge tax cuts and freebies for everyone. Once the economic realities of such hits, migration becomes inevitable. Reason why I'd rather Reform wins than be a significant opposition Honestly am surprised don’t know why I keep hearing this or maybe they are applying under another job code you know there will always be loopholes people can explore It’s obvious the PM is telling the public that if you want net migration to go down then get ready to pay more bills and taxes and he’s pushing them towards that direction no matter how much they protest or whine. The guy no get time, na Operation collect your money! Again that bbc article you shared weeks ago comes to mind. If e easy make dem run am. We are here watching and enjoying our popcorn or chips 😜 |

jedisco: Interesting how this was missed. Net migration for last year revised to almost a million. Seriously, Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak should be knighted. I only hope many students who came with dependents are not shafted.
I can't wait for Kier Starmer to boast how he's halved net migration by bringing it down to a sustainable 300 - 500k a year in record time.
I believe a good enduring takeaway from all this is that the populace would slowly be desensitised to migration. These days, all the main political parties are no longer talking of reducing migration to 'tens of thousands'. In other news, I gather work in the care sector is becoming more available. Can those working in care update us. Reduce wetin! Dey play. I keep hearing that even care workers now are applying for their dependents and getting approved. Just heard one today and another friend who just got his COS as a support worker, so could be true that jobs are now available while the whining about numbers continue. |

chuks404: baba you nailed it. I am even thinking playing Lookman and osihmen upfront in a 352 format. Iwobi playing left wing back with midfield trio of onyeka, onyedika and dele/Uche then ola Aina as the other right wing back. I left ndidi for some reasons.
With this Iwobi can cut into midfield when necessary. He is that intelligent , Lookman can be free to drift to the wings and also forward position like he does in atalanta. Dele can pounce on lose balls because he has that shot taking in him. Of course our normal three defenders. Look at what Lookman was feeding the strikers yesterday de ketelaere and retegui. Osimh, en will damage Madrid with those balls. Lookman prevails when he acts as a decoy drifting into the left wing and striker positions. He picks holes excellently and his quick thinking can cause damages to defenders when he is inside that box. Playing and restricting him to the wing reduces his efficiency.
If we get good personal deployment seriously we are good to go. Watching ademola yesterday, I was in awe. What a gem we have. Our coaches should watch these guys and play to their strength. I believe there is a reason Fulham coach doesnt give Iwobi that central midfield role some crucial matches allowing him in that left wing to act as a creative outlet which the young man interprets awesomely. When I said here that our national team coaches should be more dynamic with our players to get more goals from them excuses were made that there was no enough training time for that. Make we continue our mediocre game smh |

I’ll say just be open minded towards people in the community where you live and don’t be in a hurry to make friends, study people well before you commit. Even from your workplace you can meet very good Nigerians which has been my experience. Depending on where you live look for associations or groups where people of colour meet and size them up or observe them for a while with time you’ll begin to filter and see one or two people of like minds, then you continue from there. Above all stick around on this thread you’ll get many pointers here. Hope this helps |

rock86: The laziness and pessimism is rubbing off on me even. I have started complaining about little things. I think it's a culture thing for people here to complain and act "unambitious"..
Then as for Nigerians having my back, no, I actively avoid them now. If possible I wil avoid myself too. I've seen enough Shege and bad belle from them cos how can you be 30years in this country and be threatened by my existence, when I haven't even spent 6 months? The attitude is scary AF, I am well received by others from other countries so I better stay away and interact from afar There are very good Nigerians in the uk. See human behaviour is same everywhere even those other countries you’re talking about wait until you meet terrible ones then you’ll understand that humans are same cos that’s what makes us humans. Just be open minded and when you locate good people whether they are Nigerians or not then build good relationships cos humans are still the greatest resource you can have. Trauma is what makes people behave badly and their bitter experiences in life so just move on and be yourself to be nice to others so others don’t complain about you too. As bad as you think Nigerians are there are info only your fellow Nigerians can give you that no other nationality in this uk will give and this thread or forum is one great example so take advantage whenever you come across very good Nigerians who are as ambitious and optimistic as you are and yes I have met so many like that in the uk. |
