Christianity EtcRe: Next Time You See Someone Speaking In Tongues In Church, Slap Them by Goshen360(m): 1:21pm On May 10, 2012
Enigma: Thanks. But what about the "tongues" of 'today', is that not meant to be human languages also?

cool
Tongues of today is the "unknown" tongues IN PRAYING. It's different from "SPEAKING" divers tongues. The "speaking" is what Paul said, if there is no one to interpret, the speaker should keep quiet in the church. People misunderstand both and even misuse the one that is approved in the church.

Enigma: @Goshen360

What exactly do you mean by "divers" tongues?

cool
Divers means different tongues and tongues means languages. Divers tongues was what was given on the day of Pentecost and it is for spreading the gospel to divers or different language speaking nations. This is the "one" that has ceased or will cease.
Christianity EtcRe: Next Time You See Someone Speaking In Tongues In Church, Slap Them by Goshen360(m): 12:30pm On May 10, 2012
@ ijawkid,

What is it that you can understand about this subject. Is it the truth that there is gift of speaking "divers" tongues/languages OR the truth that there is "praying" in "unknown" tongues. They are different my brother. Check 1 cor 14 from different translations, there is switching between "speaking" and "praying" in tongues. Yes, Paul said,

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away." 1 Corinthians 13:8.

But your assignment is to find out which one will cease or "has ceased" according to you. Is it the "speaking" of divers tongues/languages OR the "praying" in "unknown" tongues? Please do a home work study to find out.

buzugee: this is a monumental moment on nairaland. you and oga Jo agreeing on something. i guess i stand corrected.
No problem Oga Buzugee,

We are ALL learning. Trust me, am doing some explosive study right now and will hit NL with some heavy stuffs in months to come. Kindly go back and read 1 cor 14 slowly and gently. Well, as for my brother Joagbaje, We agree on most things but not all. Sometimes, he likes to come and preach what his pastor teaches and when we scale such teachings in the word of God and it doesn't go too well. Then we disagree. It's okay anyway. Like you adviced me sometimes ago, to dis-infect myself from what I have learnt from the religious system and start afresh. Same thing I told Joagbaje. This reason is that, the church or religious system had MIXED truth with errors to us and we are to separate the truth from errors by ourselves. No everything we learnt in the church/religious system is wrong and not everything is true also. WE MUST PROVE "ALL THINGS" and hold on to the TRUTH.

Christianity EtcRe: Next Time You See Someone Speaking In Tongues In Church, Slap Them by Goshen360(m): 7:59pm On May 09, 2012
Well, maybe it's the way Joagbaje is explaining this thing. I don't understand where the confusion is coming from. The "speaking" in tongues is SIMPLY A UNDERSTANDABLE LANGUAGE as seen on the day of Pentecost. It was given to spread the gospel and other people heard this tongues in their own languages. "speaking" is to men, "praying" is to God. When the Apostle on the day of Pentecost "spoke", it was a well known language to convert listeners to Christianity. But there is "praying" in "unknown" tongues which is not even known to the person praying or any man around him but to God. When we "speak" in tongues in church, Paul said keep quiet unless you can interpret or someone interpret. In church, it is "speaking" but in the same 1 cor. 14:14, we see Paul switching from "Speaking" to "praying" in tongues. However, we dont need "speaking" anymore because I believe it has ceased but "praying" in "unknown" tongues while praying to God is praying in through/by the help of the Spirit. This may help explain Joagbaje's thought.
Christianity EtcRe: Next Time You See Someone Speaking In Tongues In Church, Slap Them by Goshen360(m): 3:18pm On May 09, 2012
@ buzugee,

The problem today is we need to pay attention to use of words when reading/studying the bible. The gifts of speaking in tongues given on pentecost was a well known language or tongues "as the Spirit gave them utterance". In the case, the recipient will understand what the speaker is saying or the speaker also interprets but in "praying" to God, or "praying" IN THE SPIRIT, you are praying to God and not to man and even your own personal understanding is unfruitful or irrelevant according to 1 cor 14:14
Christianity EtcRe: Next Time You See Someone Speaking In Tongues In Church, Slap Them by Goshen360(m): 3:12pm On May 09, 2012
buzugee: hmmm you may have a point but i doubt it. i dont think the phrase ' praying in tongues' is ever used. what is always used is 'speaking in tongues' and this refers to prayers not speaking to other people. i dont think the bible describes people conversing with each other as 'speaking in tongues'. undecided but i always stand corrected.
1 Cor. 14:14 nkjv
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. kjv
Christianity EtcRe: Next Time You See Someone Speaking In Tongues In Church, Slap Them by Goshen360(m): 3:05pm On May 09, 2012
Well, Joagbaje had just killed this thread. He said the truth. The problem is "UNDERSTANDING" what Paul was saying. This explanation of Joagbaje hits both side of Paul's teaching on the abuse of tongues/language. There is "speaking" tongues and there is "praying" in tongues or language. When you "pray" to God, it is between you and God as no man understands you but when you are speaking to people in "tongues" as to what Paul says "in the church", you need to pray that God enables you to interpret or someone interprets otherwise, your speaking is useless. The problem is NOT the tongues/language, THE PROBLEM IS THE MISUSE OR ABUSE OF THE GIFTS OF TONGUES.

When Paul said the gifts of tongues cease in 1 Corinthians 13:8, I believe it is the gifts divers tongues that was given to spread the gospel at the beginning of the church then. Today, the gospel is spread in all languages and no one needs to speak in tongues/languages to spread the gospel anymore. However, there is "praying" in "unknown" tongues which is different from the gift of "speaking" in tongues that was given to spread the gospel then. That "speaking" in divers tongues had ceased today. "praying" in the church in tongues is misused when because Paul condemns it. This is the real issue that should be treated. This is my submission.

Joagbaje: There are different aspect of speaking in tongues. It's used to pray to God, it's is used to give prophecies and message to the church , it is also used to pray on behalf of others.
So if you read a passage about tongues you should first distinguished which aspect writer is talking about.

It's only when you use tongues to speak to people in a message or exhortation that interpretation is required . But when you speak in tongures to God in prayer , you don't need to interprete to God. Or do you think God news our interpretation ?

Certain terms such as , praying in tongues , speaking with tongues, speaking in tongues were used . But sometimes they connotes different things. If you look at the chapter again with this understanding , you will see a difference.

debosky: Since we are the true children of Abraham as is written in Gal 3:29, can we not also be said to have given tithes since we are heirs to the promise of Abraham? If Levi as priests gave tithe in Abram, and we are also priests, can we not also be said to have given tithes in Abram?

Is tithe the only way we can 'consistently' take care of workers in the tabernacle? What if the 'care' God's workers need is more or less than the tithe? What then? Or is the care of workers in the tabernacle restricted to the tithe?

It is odd to talk about following the 'letter' of the law, yet sticking firmly to tithe/tenth - are we to give a fixed percentage or give according to the need?
Thank you Debosky. When we interpret scriptures with scriptures, this and more are the kind of revelation we come up with. Levi DID NOT "literally" paid tithe to Melchizedek as Image123 claimed. When these Levi or Levites now came out of Abraham, they NEVER PAID tithe literally but commanded to receive tithe.

Christianity EtcRe: Uncomfortable Questions For Tithe Preachers by Goshen360(m): 12:02am On May 09, 2012
Goshen360: @ Image123,

Question 8

(e) From bible verses in (d) above, Why don't tithe teachers teach believers to tithe to themselves since we are NOW kings and priest//levites and priest since only king-priest Melchizedek received but we are now king/priest; and levites/priest commanded to receive and not to pay/give tithe and don't tell us we are to take it to the church because the church replaced the OT temple, this will violate/break the scripture in 1 Cor 3:16; 6:19.
Image123: 8e). It's taught by many that we can now give tithes to ourselves. We no longer have to go to Jerusalem(the city God has chosen) to give the tribe of Levi or house of Aaron. We are now all qualified priesthood and kings under the new covenant. Christ has qualified us, you don't have to be a first born or a Jew, in Christ Jesus, we are all kings and priests. This of course does not erase order in the body of Christ, neither does it neglect spiritual leadership.
We are to remember them that have the rule over us and obey them. And submit ourselves so that they can do the work with joy. ibelieve that's in the Bible somewhere. We are to communicate to them in all good things, and by God, tithe is a v.very good thing.
"Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel." (1 Corinthians 9:14).
Check out our duty below,
"It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things." (Romans 15:27).
"If we have sown unto you spiritual things, IS IT A GREAT THING if we shall reap your carnal things?" (1 Corinthians 9:11).
To tithe givers, it's not a big deal, and as i've said, nobody is going to hell for giving abi na paying tithes whether as money, animal or spoils of war.
Christianity EtcRe: Uncomfortable Questions For Tithe Preachers by Goshen360(m): 12:02am On May 09, 2012
Goshen360: @ Image123,

Question 8

(d) In the case of Abraham and Melchizedek (priest-king) AND the case of the Law (Levites and Priest). Melchizedek received tithe, NEVER PAID TITHE. Levites and priest recieved tithe BUT NEVER COMMANDED TO PAY TITHE. Rev 1:6 and 1 Peter 2:9 has MADE us kings and priest unto God. How do you explain the priesthood of believers paying/giving tithe when priest-king Melchizedek ONLY Received but NEVER PAID tithe and Levites,Priest ONLY commaned to receive and NEVER COMMANDED to PAY/GIVE TITHE.
Image123: Some things are simply more needful than others. Sin has grade, works have grade, faith has grade, tithes iwouldsay has grade.
8d). Levi paid tithes in Abraham, how would you say Levi never paid tithes? It's not recorded whether Melchisedek paid tithes, i would not say he never paid tithes or that he paid tithes. I'll stay where the Bible left it, Melchisedec received tithes of Abraham. We're not priests in the same way or kings in the same way that Jesus is or that Melchisedec was. Our own kingship does not receive worship, but instead gives worship to the King of glory. Our priesthood offers up spiritual sacrifices to God by Jesus Christ. Christ our high priest lives and receives our tithes. We're priests in the sense that we can now offer sacrifices to God without the use of an intermediary human priest as obtained in the OT. The vail has been rent. The principle of sustaining the clergy remains, and it's wisdom profitable to direct, to understand our responsibilities instead of shelving them under titles.
Christianity EtcRe: Uncomfortable Questions For Tithe Preachers by Goshen360(m): 12:01am On May 09, 2012
Goshen360: @ Image123,

Question 8

(c) According to Deuteronomy 12 and 14:23-26 a festival tithe was to be eaten in the streets, some festival tithes could be turned into alcoholic strong drinks. where/Why is this tithe principle ignored by churches and tithe preachers today?
Image123: 8c). Which of the tithe is actively practiced and encouraged in the Bible? Definitely, the temple tithe takes priority. Once you understand the principles and Spirit behind the commands of God, you'd have less problem. It's like the burden the Jews forever have with the Sabbath day. We (most of us) worship on Sunday instead. Most of us buy and sell, travel, work on any day of the week. It's due to the understanding of the Spirit of the Sabbath. We can on the other hand be under the letter and law of the Sabbath. What's the purpose of giving a tenth to the God? It is to consistently take care of God's workers that serve in the tabernacle. What's the purpose of taking another tenth and sharing it with others? It is to inculcate a sharing spirit, generosity. As long as generosity and the spirit of sharing is encouraged, it's very fine. It's hard to see people faithful to the number 1 tithe, people would even evade tax if possible. To ask or request an additional tenth, making 20% of all the congregation(to me) may be quite tasking. Not everyone loves to give. We encourage others to give. i see pastors teach giving, sowing, charity all the time.
Christianity EtcRe: Uncomfortable Questions For Tithe Preachers by Goshen360(m): 12:00am On May 09, 2012
Goshen360: @ Image123,

Question 8

(b) If we are to follow Abraham example of tithing, which there is NO record of Abraham tithe 10% of spoils was commanded by God and according to Numbers 31:21-30 what percentage did the statute of the Law for Israel later required or commanded from spoils of war?
Image123: When you give your body to God, you make it holy unto God (Romans 12v1,2).
8b). You're free to follow Abraham's example of tithing if you choose. The mainpoint though from abraham's tithe is that tithe is a practice that precedes the law or levitical priesthood. Numbers 31 was so particular it didn't even apply for the same Israel in their subsequent wars. There were wars they were told to destroy everything and take nothing. It's shameful of you to pick it and call it the law. You've cherry picked again. There are lessons to learn from the passage if you want us to delve into that, but it's not in anyway an all time law even for the Israelites. It's not even an individual increase. The soldiers took it as individual and brought ALL 100%. But Moses and co divided it amongst everybody as commanded by God.
Christianity EtcRe: Uncomfortable Questions For Tithe Preachers by Goshen360(m): 11:59pm On May 08, 2012
Goshen360: @ Image123,

Question 8

(a) According to Genesis 14:11-16. Were the spoils of war have been "holy" tithes in the Law or Would Abraham's tithe have been accepted as a holy tithe to enter the Temple?
Image123: @Goshen
At last, i thought you had 'run away'.
8a). Yes, the would have been holy tithes(whatever that means, antitithers and their vocab sha). It may be more helpful though if you read the whole chapter i.e verses 1-24. Holy is not exactly some mystery, holy basically means sacred or separate. Whatever you seperate is holy,
For example, before you go excuse say i no put Bible verse.
"And WHEN A MAN SHALL SANCTIFY HIS HOUSE TO BE holy unto the LORD, then the priest shall estimate it, whether it be good or bad: as the priest shall estimate it, so shall it stand." (Leviticus 27:14).
You see, a man can decide to make his built house holy UNTO THE LORD. It simply means it's dedicated, given to God. i make my money holy unto the LORD all the time.

Today, everything applies to me by God's grace. God blesses my basket and storehouse aplenty. He makes me to lie down in green pastures. You need to take a chill pill and appropriate the Word of God into your life. You can't be talking from both sides of the mouth saying the law has to go and its associates. It's major weightier associates according to the Law-giver are mercy, judgement and faith, not mere tithes. If the Law has been abolished according to you guys, let's do a thorough work of abolishing faith, mercy and judgement the bigger weightier percent, not just abolishing tithe a minor. Are you a bully?
Are you saying justice, mercy and faith are NOT found also in the Gospel or NT? Shey una don see your Q8 sha? lolz grin

Okay. I hear you. Now that the news is all over the internet and city, how do we "separate" this man that is still a "pastor preaching on the pulpit in a particular church"? How? This is my simple point. OR Are we to say our role or model as a pastor/child of God should be different at work and another person at church? If this is the case we are making, then Christianity is in trouble.

OLAADEGBU: It is true that the man is/was a pastor in DLBC but the link posted in the OP does not show any sign of investigative report, it just shows cow boy journalism. As they say innocent until proven guilty. Why don't we wait for the verdict of the court before we start condemning the man since we don't have all the information. If he is guilty as charged then let him suffer as a thief and if not he will be vindicated but this is not an opportunity for the haters of God and his people to take cheap shots against God and his Church even the local church.
