Politics / Second Niger Bridge To Be Completed In 2022 – Orji by Grayxme: 6:49pm On Dec 06, 2018
A total amount of N33bn has so far been released for the implementation of the second Niger Bridge project. The Managing Director, Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority, Mr. Uche Orji, gave the figure while speaking shortly after an inspection of the project. Work pillars still ongoing at the Delta State end. Orji visited the site with the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe, who was accompanied by some of his chiefs. The project, which is being handled by Julius Berger Plc, was awarded in 2014 by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. The Second Niger Bridge project, which is estimated to gulp about N220bn, has been experiencing delays owing to various challenges which had affected its timely implementation. Speaking on the development, Orji expressed optimism that the project, which is estimated to gulp about N220bn, would not experience further delay. He said that private sector funding for the project was being planned to be raised by 2020 through bond and equity. Orji explained that already, a Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund to be managed by the NSIA had been set up for five critical road and power projects across the country. He said the PIDF, with a seed funding of 650million dollars , was targeted to catalyse funding for the Second Niger Bridge, Lagos-Ibadan expressway, East-West road, Abuja to Kano road, and Mambilla Hydroelectric Power. He said the PIDF would eliminate the risks of project funding, cost variation and completion that have plagued the development of the nation’s critical infrastructure assets. He said, “The Second Niger Bridge project was conceived to provide an alternative crossing between Asaba and Onitsha within reasonable distance from the current “It is expected to spur an increase in investments, agriculture and trade particularly with the Onitsha Main Market in the region, due to the improved and quicker access. “There are three phases of the second Niger bridge. The first one is the 11.9 kilometer bridge connecting Asaba and Onitsha. The entire work is a 44km project. “The mobilisation for the project was released in August. We are confident that the funding is more stable now and we are looking at a completion date of 2022, it’s a big project.”

Politics / Fight Against Corruption Yet To Attain Desired Level — Buhari by Grayxme: 4:43pm On Dec 06, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has said the fight against corruption in Nigeria was yet to attain the desired level being sought by government. President Buhari Speaking at the Conference of Auditors-General in Nigeria in Abuja, Tuesday, Buhari, who was represented by Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs.Winifred Oyo-Ita, also tasked auditors-general in the country to contribute their quota to the task of enthroning transparency and accountability in the public sector so as to deepen the fight against corruption. Buhari, the son of Abraham and the children of Yahweh He said: “At the inception of this administration, three cardinal goals were set: these are security, fight against corruption and revamping of the economy. Three and the half years down the life of this administration, I am pleased to report that tremendous achievement has been recorded in all three areas. I will say, however, that the desired level in the fight against corruption is yet to be attained. “Despite this continued effort on the part of government, gaps still remain to be closed, especially in the area of external auditing.” Buhari said since inception, the current administration had introduced several initiatives, especially in the financial and management sector, aimed at stemming the tide of corruption. Some of these initiatives, he said, include Treasury Single Account, TSA, which had tremendously reduced leakages in the system, as well as the Presidential Initiative on Continuous Audit, PICA. He said: “PICA has the mandate to validate controls, assess risk, probe a small cost, ensure compliance with public financial management refunds, detect errors and make recommendations to management for necessary actions. “Recently, I approve several sweeping reforms in the public finance sector so as to further reduce waste and drive up revenue. ‘’These reforms include performance monitoring that will set financial indicators and targets for revenue generation for government owned enterprises; new measures for expenditure controls, budgeting and financial reporting requirement.”

Politics / 2019: Buhari’s Record Incomparable – Bagudu by Grayxme: 5:46pm On Dec 05, 2018
GOVERNOR Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State yesterday stated that there was no basis comparing the achievements recorded by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration and what the presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is promising Nigerians. Bagudu-Buhari Governor Bagudu stated this while speaking to State House correspondents after a meeting behind closed doors with the chief of staff to the President Abba Kyari at the presidential villa, Abuja. In apparent reference to the PDP presidential candidate, the Kebbi state governor said what President Buhari has achieved and what has been outlined for the second term was not comparable. Responding to a question on the crowed that attended the campaigns of the PDP presidential candidate in Sokoto on Monday, the Kebbi governor said “I don’t know what you mean when you said you saw crowd there because many people have different interpretations. “And like I said, President Buhari is running on his own record. Within the last ten days, the next level agenda was disclosed showing what has been achieved and what the second term will usher and that I believe has resonated with Nigerians and there is no comparison.” The governor noted that Kebbi State remains one area to showcase the achievement of the President Buhari Government in the last three and a half years. “We believe that President Muhammadu Buhari is running on his record and Kebbi state is one of those states that is very proud of the policies that had been put in place. It has helped the state to achieve gross in output, gross in income, better security and more transparency in the management of our revenue. “So all the three elements that President Muhammadu Buhari promised in his campaign, we have seen the benefits in Kebbi State. So as a result, we are a welfare and transparent State. “The generality of the people of Kebbi State are united under one party and we are determined to lead all other states to ensure that President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo are re-elected,” he said. On preparation of the Kebbi to make rice available during the Yuletide season, the governor said “Few days ago the President was quoted at a farmers day by the oil company, Agip. “I think I read the press statement by Femi Adesina, where President said he is working on with the National Food Security Council on ensuring that farmers, Fishermen and all those that are in the livestock sector are supported particularly on the devastation caused by the flood so that the festive season will be a better one and they can replant and compensate. “Secondly, last year, Mr. President graciously approved an intervention where rice was sold in many markets, Onitsha, Lagos, Abeokuta, Kano for N12,000 and I am confident that the President is looking forward to making Nigerians happy.”

Politics / EFCC Records 246 Convictions In 11 Months by Grayxme: 6:24pm On Dec 04, 2018
The Acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu on Tuesday in Lagos, said the commission recorded 246 court convictions of corrupt persons in the last 11 months. EFCC operatives Magu disclosed this during a stakeholders’ interactive meeting at the Lagos office of the anti-graft agency, stressing that they were winning the war against corruption. He said that the commission had also secured quite a number of temporary or permanent forfeiture of property and various sums of monies unlawfully acquired by persons of questionable character. “The most recent of such final forfeiture, through the efforts of the commission to the Federal government last month, was the N1.9 billion from Heritage Bank. “No doubt, the introduction of special courts to try persons for corruption cases has been a blessing to anti-graft agencies. No more unnecessary delay in trial and dispensation of justice,” he said. On the forthcoming general elections, Magu said that the commission would rise against the issue of vote-buying. He urged the electorate to vote in leaders based on their programmes, not those who would pervert the system. The anti-graft boss, however, declared that the commission was apolitical, stressing that they were concerned with those seeking to use the political space for money laundering. “We would enforce the provision of the anti-money laundering law to the letter, no matter whose ox is gored. “Some vested interests are already attacking us for our stand on the side of the law. Let us remind them that the law is no respecter of person,’’ he said. He said that voter inducement portended a grave danger to our fledgling democracy and vote-buying is another manifestation of corruption that must be tackled. On the activities of fraudsters popularly known as yahoo boys, shady night clubs and car dealers, Magu said more fight would be taken to their base, stressing that consistent raid would be carried out on them. On the alleged investigation of APC National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, Magu said that the investigation on him was based on petitions against him before he became chairman of the ruling party. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that members of the Civil Society and the media were present at the meeting. (NAN)

Politics / We Won’t Rest Until Remaining Chibok Girls Are Released — Buhari by Grayxme: 5:51pm On Dec 04, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari pledged that his government will not rest until the remaining Chibok girls kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists in April 2014 are safely released According to a statement issued President Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Tuesday, Buhari made the pledge on Monday in Katowice, Poland, during a bilateral meeting with Swiss President Alain Berset, on the margins of the UN Climate Change Conference, COP24. 82 Chibok girls with President Buhari shortly before leaving for London The Presidential aide said Buhari had spent the whole day at the International Conference Centre, Katowice, where he delivered his national address at the opening of the 12-day meeting of COP24. Shehu said the president had also met with several world leaders and visited the impressive Nigerian pavilion at the climate summit. During his meeting with the Swiss President, the Nigerian leader thanked the Swiss Confederation for its efforts and important role as intermediaries to secure the release of some Chibok girls. He assured him that the issue of the remaining kidnapped girls and other abducted persons would remain a ‘key priority’ for the Nigerian government. President Buhari and his Swiss counterpart, according to the statement, discussed joint strategies to ensure the safe return of the girls, building on the past successes of securing the release of some of the Chibok girls and other abducted persons in the North Eastern part of Nigeria. The President also welcomed the Swiss President’s commitment to continue providing humanitarian assistance to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nigeria and to ensure the safe release of the abducted school girls. ”We will continue to make the safe release of the remaining Chibok girls a priority and will welcome any kind of support from any quarters to make this happen, ” the President said. In separate bilateral meetings with the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda and the Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, President Buhari commended the country for a successful outing at the opening of the COP24 meeting in Katowice. The President told his Polish counterpart that Nigeria was facing serious climate change challenges, particularly the receding Lake Chad, which had been a source of livelihood to some 40 million people living in the region. ”Nigeria is totally committed to global efforts to mitigate and adapt to effects of climate change,” President Buhari told the Polish leader, whose country is the president of COP24. In his meeting with Prime Minister Morawiecki, the President lauded the plan by the Polish Government to open a Trade Office in Lagos soon, promising that “investors who look to Nigeria can be ‘guaranteed’ of safe returns on their investments.’’ He said: ”We have a vibrant and active young population and our government is doing so much on the Nigerian economy, including diversifying to non-oil sectors. ”We welcome increased cooperation with Poland and will encourage investments in other sectors of the economy like solid minerals and information technology.’’ Morawiecki told President Buhari that traditionally 96 per cent of oil imports to Poland came from Saudi Arabia and Russia, adding ”but now we are looking at importing oil from Nigeria.” The Prime Minister noted as the fastest growing economy in the European Union, Poland had identified Nigeria, Egypt and South Africa, as three top investment destinations in Africa. ”We want the hub of our investment destination to be in Nigeria,” he added. The Polish Prime Minister welcomed the pledge by the Nigerian leader to immediately put in place a framework to encourage more Polish investments in Nigeria. Meanwhile, the President’s bilateral meeting with his Austrian counterpart, Alexander Van der Bellen, focused on the challenges of Lake Chad and what was required to recharge it. While noting that the Lake faced the two challenges of technology and financing, President Buhari told the Austrian leader that enormous financial resources and technology were required to transfer water to Lake Chad from the Congo Basin. Van der Bellen, who indicated his country’s interest to cooperate with Nigeria on recharging the Lake Chad, talked about climate change challenges in Austria including drought, glaciers melting, among others. President Buhari also met with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and both leaders followed up on their past discussions, during their last meeting in The Hague, Netherlands, in July, which centred on trade, investments and partnerships in agriculture. The President welcomed the proposal by the Dutch Prime Minister to visit Abuja soon and promised that the Nigerian government would continue to provide a conducive business environment for existing and prospective Dutch investors. On the sidelines of COP24, President Buhari also met with the Prime Minister of Estonia, Jüri Ratas. The Prime Minister of the Northern European country sought Nigeria’s support on its bid for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for 2020 to 2021. “The two leaders also discussed bilateral cooperation and climate change mitigation,’’ the statement said.(NAN)

Politics / Opposition Will Collapse, Buhari Will Win Presidency – Economist by Grayxme: 5:44pm On Dec 04, 2018
Nigerian opposition coalition may collapse before the 2019 general election and give way for the the re-emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari. President Buhari The respected and world renowned media outfit, Economist, is reported by the Nation to have made the prediction in its latest edition. The prediction has incurred the wrath of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, who on Monday described the forecast of the London-based magazine as failing to meet the attributes of objectivity, balance and fairness. In The Economist latest edition, “The World in 2019”, there is little hope that Islamist insurgency in the Northeast will end. Appraising Nigeria, the magazine said: “The president, Muhammadu Buhari, will win re-election in February, as a new opposition coalition may collapse before the vote. “Given the outlook for continuing political weakness, there is little prospect of progress in the fight against the Islamist insurgency in the north, nationalism in the oil-producing Delta and secessionism in the Biafra region. “Market-based reforms will languish, holding back growth yet again.” The magazine’s other predictions for Nigeria are: GDP growth (1.9%); GDP per head-$2, 410(PPP: $6,020); inflation (13.6%); Budget balance (5GDP) is -2.0 and population (201.0m). Politics / Atiku Not Buhari’s Match, Will Suffer Bloodied Nose –dambazau by Grayxme: 3:44pm On Dec 03, 2018
The Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, has said former Vice-President Abubakar Atiku is no match for President Muhammadu Buhari and will suffer a bloodied nose in the 2019 presidential election.
Atiku is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party while the incumbent President, Buhari is of the All Progressives Congress.
Addressing journalists at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, Dambazau said while the President had used his position in and out of office to better the lives of people, Atiku had not impacted lives outside his immediate circle.
He spoke through his Senior Special Assistant and former Chairman, House Committee on Security, Aliyu Gebi.

He said, “In this race (2019), there is only one gladiator and that gladiator is the current President. So, there is no contender. (Atiku) by saying this is the toughest election in the history of Nigeria, yes toughest for him, certainly not for the President.

“As far as I’m concerned, this will be the easiest election in the history of Nigeria as far as President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC are concerned; he (Atiku) will not even win Adamawa much less Taraba or Gombe and then come to Bauchi. We will ensure we do whatever we can, this will be the last Atiku’s outing and he will suffer a bloodied nose by the grace of God.”

Dambazau said the country had decimated Boko Haram, adding that the insurgency was in his last days despite the recent attack on Melete where soldiers were killed.

The former Chief of Army Staff said with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gbenga Olonisakin, taking a centre stage and promoting cohesion among the service chiefs, it was a matter of time for the insurgency to be completely wiped off.

Politics / Boko Haram: S/W Hunters Offer To Help Soldiers, Presidency by Grayxme: 3:14pm On Dec 03, 2018
HUNTERS Association in the South West zone of the country has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to involve them in the fight against Boko Haram insurgents in the North East. The call was made by the National President of Soludero Hunters Association of Nigeria, Oba Nureni Ajijola Idris Anabi while speaking with Vanguard in an exclusive interview. Hunters The hunters who flaunted local charms said getting rid of the insurgents should not have been this difficult if they had been involved by the federal government. Oba Ajijola said the incessant attacks on innocent people and soldiers in the North should not be left for the army or security agents alone but should be a combination of the security agents and local hunters. Making particular reference to the recent attack by the insurgents which recorded heavy casualties on the side of the military, Ajijola maintained that the dimension the attack was assuming was too dangerous. While acknowledging the significant achievement the President Buhari led administration had made in pushing the insurgents far away, he said more achievements would be recorded if the hunters were empowered with vehicles and other logistics. He said, “I want to tell you that we have charms that can demobilize armoured tanks and rifles of all kinds. Their weapons will just not work. When invited, we can also give the soldiers some protection that would not make them vulnerable to attacks.” “President Buhari has done tremendously well in the fight against Book Haram. Except for those who don’t want to face facts, this administration has given hope to ordinary Nigerians. The insecurity issue has been tackled though much still needs to be done”. “The president should just try us and see if we can help. But, I assure you that Nigerians including the army will see how much we can do. There are still charms that can render weapons of war of the insurgents useless and we will be catching them(Book Haram) like chickens.” “We sympathise with the soldiers on the unnecessary attacks. The way we can contribute our quota is not only by sympathising with them. That’s why we are calling on the president to include us(south west hunters) in the fight against the insurgents”, be noted.

As the story of one Jibril from Sudan being touted as the Nigerian President continues to spread like a wide fire, President Muhammadu Buhari Sunday in Poland said he is his real self and not cloned as being rumoured.
The social media has been awash that the person occupying the Presidential seat at the State House, Abuja, is not President Buhari that was voted into power in 2015 rather one Jibril from Sudan that looks like the President But President Buhari who debunked rumors of him being cloned said a lot of people had hoped he was dead during the period of his ill health.
Responding to question from a Nigerian who wanted to know if he was the real Buhari or the much talked about Jibril from Sudan, at the town hall meeting in Krakow on Sunday evening, he said he is his real self. The meeting provided him an opportunity to interact with Nigerians living in Poland, which was the President’s first official engagements, ahead of the Conference of the Parties (COP24) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), taking place from December 2-4, 2018. According to him, “It’s real me, I assure you. I will soon celebrate my 76th birthday and I will still go strong. “A lot of people had hoped that l died during my ill health. I will soon celebrate my seventy sixth birthday, l am strong.” The President described the sponsors of the rumors as “ignorant and irreligious.” He said, “Yes , a lot of people had hoped that l died during my ill health. Some even reached out to the Vice President to consider them to be his deputy because they assumed I was dead. That embarrassed him a lot and of course, he visited me when l was convalescing… It’s real me, l assure you.” The Nigerian leader according to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said he was looking forward to celebrating his 76th birthday on December 17 and jocularly added: ‘‘If I am getting harassed by anyone, it is my grandchildren, who are getting too many.’’ The President had expressed his happiness with the report by the Nigerian Ambassador to Poland, Eric Adagogo Bell-Gam. He used the occasion to reiterate that his government will continue to maintain focus and deliver on the three focal points of his campaign in 2015: security, economy and the fight against corruption. ‘‘Those in the North East will tell you that in spite of the recent setbacks, there is a difference between the time we came and before. ‘‘We are not doing badly on security, economy and agriculture. We have virtually stopped the importation of food especially rice and we are saving a lot of money. ‘‘We now have food security and that has come with fiscal security because a lot of young educated people have not regretted going back to the farms and earning a respectable living. ‘‘I am afraid, this is not receiving good publicity… but a lot of people in the rural areas are enjoying the benefits of our interventions in agriculture,’’ he said. He reaffirmed that no territory of Nigeria is under the control of Boko Haram terrorists and called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and supportive of Federal Government’s efforts to ensure the security of lives and property in the country. While acknowledging that it has not been easy financing the security sector in the country, the President said the Nigerian Armed Forces were equal to the task. The President noted that it was regrettable that herdsmen and farmers clashes in the country have been politicised, assuring that the Nigerian government will continue to prioritise security because that is what many investors consider first before investing in the country. On the fight against corruption, he said all recovered stolen assets will be sold and the proceeds returned to the treasury for the benefit of Nigerians. On women representation in his government, the President told the meeting: ‘‘I have plans for all Nigerians. I am not a male chauvinist. If I’m a chauvinist will I give the Finance Ministry to women?’’ In his remarks, the Ambassador of Nigeria to Poland, Mr Eric Adagogo Bell-Gam praised Nigerians living in the country for being worthy ambassadors of the country. Among those who met President Buhari were Mr Larry Ugwu, an Artist and Curator, who has lived in Poland for 40 years and has contributed immensely to promoting Nigerian cultural heritage in the Polish society; Anthony Egwuatu, a Gynaecologist, who has lived in the country for 30 years and Mr Olomofe Larry, a human rights activist, who has fought for justice for fellow Nigerians in the host country, among several others. The event was put together and anchored by Hon. Abike Dabiri, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Diaspora. He noted that Boko Haram strike occasionally, “This is because they understand the terrain better. It is not easy financing the war against terror.”
