The current common N350/litre fuel price is brutal, unless you have the patience and time to spend hours in queues.
Since Feb 1st 2023, I’ve spent 63k on fuel, and today is just the 15th. My Benz C350 fuel tank is about 50 litres so a full tank @N350 is around N17k
I will make sure I create time on Saturday and join a queue. This is too much.

There are many reasons why card payments are challenging here;

- Delayed credit alerts especially with interbank transactions.
I was at a petrol station today ready to use my debit card to pay but their POS device’s battery charge had run down. I transferred the amount I wanted to pay to their bank account and it took about 45 minutes for them to receive a credit alert from their bank. Someone else had been there since morning with the same problem.

-Card payments are not available for most daily transactions eg. transportation (tricycle or motorcycle rides, buses, taxis), open market sales of vegetables, food, etc are almost entirely cash-based.

- The Nigerian economy is largely a mixed and somewhat open economy with most of the lower class living on a day-to-day basis. Apart from oil revenues and white collar jobs, the vast majority of income earners depend on daily small to medium scale payments of goods (particularly agricultural products) and other services. Many of these people don’t have bank accounts.

- Nigerians have been so used to cash payments for most of their transactions that the sudden withdrawal of cash from circulation has caused and unprecedented volume of card transactions resulting in systematic overloading of the bank platforms and payment failures.
