I agree with the cause of impatience. I'm hardly in a hurry cos I usually plan my day in advance. Same here. The system was actually designed that way by our colonial masters so as to ensure the black race is dependent on them. However, they are only exploiting our natural tendency towards tribalism and other sentiments. Unfortunately, our "leaders" and our people are unable to see beyond their own selfish interests and channel our resources towards the development of our race. |

dearpreye: Shockingly, this impatience hardly leads to anywhere meaningful. I'm yet to understand from whence we got this bad habit. Impatience often grows from a lack of purpose, vision or goal. As a nation, we are yet to define our purpose as a people. Instead of having the us-against-them mentality, we have chosen to adopt the me-against-you, ibo-against-yoruba, ijebu-against-egba, anambra-against-owerri, me-against-my-brother mentality instead. Until we define our purpose and goals and chose a nationalistic approach to life, we will always be in a hurry to nowhere |

I don't want to serve you. Simple. I don't even have to explain myself.
Don't I have rights over my choices again like the gays do over thiers? The purpose of the article is to point out where god has told you guys to forgive sinners and even go the extra mile to be good to them. In case you chose to SKIP that part. Besides, sin is sin. God is not going to throw a gay person in a different compartment in hell fire than someone who lies. I don't even understand what the average Nigerian christian's point of view is regarding this gay issue. Statistically, there are more crimes committed by straight people than gay people and gay people are conceived, 95% of the time by straight people. Besides, you theists don't see anything wrong with buring up thieves without a fair trial, which just so happens to be murder and even the scriptures WARN about being judgemental. By the very act of forsaking a sinner, you also sin thereby qualifying yourself for a place in hell. While you're at it, pray to god to stop creating gay people. I wonder what kind of satisfaction or pleasure he gains from creating them in the first place when he saw it fit to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah in bible times(aka Jewish fairytales). Only a sick god will create a human gay and still send him to hell for being what he was created to be. It's plain pathetic. Smd |

Umuchoke: God bless you immensely for this post. The emboldened is my best part of your analysis. Europeans understand and value the human right to making individualistic choices. Some of our traditions are the reason we're still lagging behind. Thanks a lot and God bless The average African doesn't see it that way. We keep fighting to preserve our "African values" but still end of bleaching our skin, changing our accent, killing each other, practising tribalism and still hold the title for world's most poverty stricken continent. Someone mentioned on this thread that "what elders see sitting down a child can't see standing on a tree". While that may be true to an extent, it is important to question what exactly it is they know and how they've been able to apply that knowledge to the greater good of our people. All the corrupt officials and people who have ruined this nation are all our "elders". It's quite a pathetic situation we are in. And our youths are simply conditioned to repeat the same mistakes our elders did |
Family › Re: Can't We Just Get Married Without Involving Families? by hahn(m): 5:20pm On Aug 06, 2015 |
Umuchoke: I guess the title of the thread is a bit misleading. I never opined not to seek counsels from the elders of the family. My own is just to accept their good wishes and blessings but they can't choose for me. If I love my girl and she equally loves me in return, no family can stop us from getting married I agree with you 100%. However, this is not feasible in Nigeria because we are taught from childhood to always respect our parents and "elders" thus making us dependent on their opinions to the extent they control our lives. In Europe, a parent or family member has to call and book an appointment to see his/her child. If you get to the door without an appointment, it must be temporary and can even get turned back at the door. In Nigeria, your MIL just shows up from the village saying that she's staying for two weeks. And you can't argue In Europe, kids are taught that by the time they are 18, they can fully run their lives. Many of them leave home, get an apartment, get jobs, go to school once they are 18 and only visit their parents. In Nigeria, a man of 40years that is married with kids still lives in his "father's house". There are exceptions but this is the norm as the issue of family involvement exists in every country. I guess most people won't understand if they are not in this kind of situation that will make the non involvement of family seem necessary. |

5minsmadness: DR A was appointed as the head of department in an NGO in the south western part of Nigeria in February. Even though he had four colleagues who were senior to him, the outgoing head of department recommended him as the new head of department and the decision was ratified by the Overall company head.
During the first week of his tenure as head of department, he called a meeting of all staff to articulate his vision for the department and to solicit staff cooperation to achieve his goals. At the meeting, of the 20 staff only 12 attended the meeting which started one hour later than scheduled. No single colleague that was senior to him attended the meeting.
Dr A suspected that the colleagues that were senior to him were not happy that he was appointed as HOD instead of them. He reached out one on one to each of the four colleagues to solicit thier support and cooperation during his tenure.
One month to into his tenure , it was obvious to Dr A that despite his attempts to reach out to the aggrevied colleagues, they were unwilling to support him as HOD. They constantly challenged his decisions and instigated other members of staff to oppose his every move.
Dr A has since identified members who were supportive of him and resolved to work strictly with them in delegating tasks while excluding those who were in the camp of the aggreived lecturers.
The situation became so bad that the OVerhead had to call a meeting twice in two months to mediate among members of staff. Despite this , there has been no improvement in the department as there is constant bickering among staff.
What do you think should be done to resolve this issue? He should sack them, if he has the power to, or report to a higher authority to either sack them or transfer them somewhere else and then appoint people who are willing to work with him in their positions |

Very interesting read.
Nigerians really need an understanding of what it means to reason logically as "reasoning logically" is often misunderstood as criticism.
Unfortunately, the hunger for knowledge is lacking greatly in our people, as proven by the dunces above me, because we seem to be content with leaving things just as it is.
No one wants to question what our "elders" have told us because the "elders" also are our parents and to accuse our parents as being ignorant or having limited knowledge is easily translated as disrespect.
Also, no one wants to criticize popular beliefs because that would also put one's own belief and also level of wisdom(which shouldn't be the case) into question because to be able to criticize one's self requires an acceptance of the fact that one is ignorant.
And most people feel more comfortable with the delusion that they are always right. |
