Following the withdrawal of the ultimatum given to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU  and the confirmation of payment of N200bn by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, the federal government and the Union, Wednesday, signed a memorandum of understanding, MoU,  in Abuja. It was gathered that, the strike may be called off next week when ASUU will  present the MoU to its National Executive meeting, NEC.
This is good news to all students! Let's hope the strike will be called off next week!

In Islam a Muslim man can not marry a non Muslim woman unless she is Christian or Jewish. He is not allowed to marry a non-Muslim woman believing in any religion other than these two religions. However, the Muslim woman is not allowed to marry a non-Muslim man even if he was a Christian or a Jew.

The proof for this are the following verses from the Holy Quran which says: “This day (all) the good things are allowed to you; and the food of those who have been given the Book is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them; and the chaste from among the believing women and the chaste from among those who have been given the Book before you (are lawful for you); when you have given them their dowries, taking (them) in marriage, not fornicating nor taking them for paramours in secret; and whoever denies faith, his work indeed is of no account, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers.” (Al-Maaedah : 5)
Imam al-Tabari said in his commentary on this verse:
“and the chaste from among the believing women and the chaste from among those who have been given the Book before you” means, free woman among those whom have been given the book, namely the Jews and Christians who believe in what is in the Tawraat (Torah) and Injeel (Gospel), whether from among the Arabs or other people; you are permitted to marry them “when you have given them their dowries” which means, if you give to those whom you marry of your (Muslims’) chaste women and their (Jews’ and Christians’) chaste women their dowries.” - (Tafseer al-Qurtubi, 6/104)
But it is not permissible for a Muslim man to marry a Magian (Zoroastrian) woman or an idol-worshipping woman, etc.
The evidence for that is the verse in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And do not marry Al-Mushrikaat (idolatresses) till they believe (worship Allaah Alone). And indeed a slave woman who believes is better than a (free) Mushrikah (idolatress), even though she pleases you” (al-Baqarah 2:221)
It is not permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a non-Muslim from any other religion, whether from among the Jews or Christians, or any other religion. It is not permissible for her to marry a Jew, a Christian, a Magian, an idol-worshipper… etc.
The evidence for that is the verse in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters), until they believe: A slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman, even though she allures you. Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe: A man slave who believes is better than an unbeliever, even though he allures you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the Fire. But Allah beckons by His Grace to the Garden (of bliss) and forgiveness, and makes His Signs clear to mankind: That they may celebrate His praise.” (al-Baqarah 2:221)
The reason for this is that Islam highly regards the marital bond between the man and his wife and marital life must be based on a solid foundation. Allah Almighty says in a Quranic verse
“And one of His signs is that He created mates for you from yourselves that you may find rest in them, and He put between you love and compassion; most surely there are signs in this for a people who reflect.” (Alrum : 21)

When a Muslim man is married to a Christian or a Jewish woman, he is ordered by Islam to respect her religion and he is not allowed to prevent her from practicing her religious rites and he should not stop her from going to church or temple. This respectful attitude is a guarantee that protects the family from falling apart.

However when a Muslim woman marries a non-Muslim, respect for her religion is not guaranteed because a Muslim believes in all the Prophets and respects Christianity and Judaism, however non-Muslims may not believe in the Prophet of Islam. By that, a Muslim woman is not guaranteed to have her freedom in practicing her religious rites and she would have to live with a man who does not respect her religion. This attitude will sooner or later cause the family to fall apart. So it is actually one rule which is to guarantee that both the husband and the wife would respect each others belief. If this rule is not guaranteed then it is better to stop a relation that would result in nothing but wrecked families.

Sincere 9gerian: Dont you get it? ASUU uses strike to blackmail and pressure govt into signing ridiculous and un-implementable agreements. Yar Adua signed that agreement in 2009 just to get ASUU off his back, even if momentarily. The same thing is happening again. After 4 months strike, govt has been forced to make new concessions, even if just to make the ASUU call off the strike momentarily. Its been like that since the late 70s. So the cycle of madness continues.

Meanwhile, are you insinuating that because govt is irresponsible, ASUU should also act irresponsibly? So if people from ASUU find themselves in govt tomorrow, they'll continue with the irresponsibility? So the cycle of irresponsibility continues? It is high time they are held accountable and made to up their ante. Government cannot fulfill their own side of the bargain with the lecturers only for the students to be shortchanged by lecturers. Since ASUU is interested in arresting the decay in the education sector, let the students help and arrest the rot within their various universities. Shaykh Ibn aj-Jawzee (rahimahullaah) says:

“If you fall into a hardship that is hard to be free from, you can’t (do anything) but make du’aa and take refuge in Allaah, after repenting from sins, because sins necessitate punishment, so if they disappear by repentance from them, the reason (for punishment) is lifted. So if you repented and made du’aa, and did not see any trace of response, then look into your affair. Maybe the repentence was not sound, so correct it then make du’aa and don’t become tired of making du’aa. Maybe the good is in delaying the response, and maybe the good is not in responding, so you will be rewarded and responded by being referred to what benefits you, and it would be beneficial for you to not be given what you requested, but rather to be given other than it as a replacement.

So if iblees comes and says: ‘How much did you call upon Him and did not see any response?’ Then say: ‘I worship (Allaah) by making du’aa, and I am certain that the answer will come. But maybe its delay is due to some good, and even if it doesn’t happen, worship and humility takes place.’ So take care not to ask for something except by combining it with asking for that which is good, because the occurance of many a wish from the dunyaa was a cause for destruction.”

Despite claims by the Federal government that the sum of N100billion had been disbursed to 59 public universities to improve infrastructure in the benefitting institutions, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has alleged that none of the universities had received the said sum.

Chairman of the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi branch of ASUU, Dr. Celestine Aguoru, who spoke yesterday after leading members of the branch on a peaceful march around Makurdi town in protest of the lingering Federal Government/ASUU face-off said: “As we are talking today, government has not released one kobo out of the N100 billion they claimed they have given the universities; this goes to show the level of insincerity of the government.“The truth is that government is paying lip service to the development of education in this country and has therefore resorted to playing politics with the education sector and the future of our children.
“It is rather unfortunate that majority of those who are leading us today went to school in their time on scholarships, but today they do not want our children to benefit from that same gesture, all because of greed.
“Today we are faced with a situation where the amount Nigerians spend yearly to educate their children in Ghana is far more than the yearly budgetary allocation to the education sector.
“Our leaders are not being fair to our country, government should as a matter of priority implement its agreements with ASUU, Nigerians are tired of this deceit; they should remember that if they continue to negate their responsibilities to the people, one day they will certainly give account to God.”
Meanwhile, General Gowon, who spoke in Lagos at the launch the first edition of the Shell Nigeria Scholars Forum, for the beneficiaries of its scholarship argued that one of the parties must be prepared to yield ground in order to save the education sector. He said: “I do believe it is time for all lovers of education to come together and get both the federal government and ASUU to return to the negotiation table and resolve all outstanding grievances. Both sides must be willing to yield ground for the sake of our children and that of our dear country Nigeria
