I wonder why the initial post was removed. There is no security issue attached to it. It will be in all the newspapers tommorow. You should be happy that you have the info first. Nairaland, please watch it. |
That is the latest. The security personnel and EFCC that went to arrest Ibori met a brick wall, as the militants chased them out, and even beat some of them. This happened this morning/afternoon, just as the Inspector General of Police ordered the withdrawal of Police men guarding him. Even the Benin Warri Express road was blocked as a result. That is the latest. |
I just heard that Militants dealt with Security and EFCC men that went to arrest Ibori at Delta. The Express road leading to Oghara from Benin or Warri was blocked. The men had to flee!. |
My take on this is that, if you pursue some one and you cannot catch him, please let him be. Let him continue running, but justice will catch up on him someday. As for EFCC, they went too far. What if those militants opened fire on them? Jonathan can never send soldiers to the Ijaw nation, to quell any militancy, because that will ruin his government, so let Ibori be for now. |
Latest news from Oghara has it that, the security men that went to effect Ibori's arrest, were thoroughly beaten today this afternoon, when they got there to effect his arrest. The Inspector General of Police had this morning withdrawn all Mobile Police attached to Ibori from his Lagos, Abuja, and Oghara house. This now gave way for his arrest, but on getting there, the Militants rained stones on the security men, and beat some of them to a sorry state. As at the time of filing this report, the road leading to the minor road in his house is totally blocked, and no one can cross. It is heavily guarded by militants. |

The never unending saga of Fashola's probe!. |
There’s No Stopping Fashola’s Probe —Keyamo April 16, 2010 15:02, 1,040 views By Kazeem Ugbodaga Lagos lawyer and counsel to the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Festus Keyamo says nothing would stop the House from probing allegations of financial misappropriation against Governor Babatunde Fashola. He called on the governor to submit himself to probe in order to clear himself, saying there was no hiding through court injunction to dodge the probe against him. The State House of Assembly had yesterday set up a fresh 7-member committee to probe allegations against the governor by the True Face of Lagos, which staged a protest to the House recently to demand probe of the governor. Speaking with P.M.NEWS this morning, Keyamo said that the governor should be probed, adding that the accolades the governor received in the media should not divert attention from the real thing. “Every public officer has a duty to give account of stewardship no matter the height of praise singing he receives from the press. The office you are occupying is not your father’s property but the public. “Probe is not the same thing as verdict of guilt, but an opportunity for one to clear himself. If Fashola believes his hands are clean, now is the opportunity for him to shine,” he stated. According to him, “Fashola should take the path of honour and clear himself of the allegations. He can’t continue to hide under court injunction. “If you say you plant grass and flower, come and tell the people how much you spent in planting them, tell them how you spent their money because it is not your father’s money. “The House must go ahead with the probe because it is their constitutional and moral duty to do what they want to do. They have now properly published the allegations in their official journal.” Comrade Bamidele Aturu, who was counsel to Mr. Richard Akinola, the man who first went to court to stop the House from probing the governor, said “we will assess our legal option and deal with the issue.” Aturu stated that if the House erred in setting up the new committee, it would be challenged in the court, saying that “we are for democracy and probity.” Also, Majority Leader, Lagos Assembly, Hon. Kolawole Taiwo said the House had already published the allegations in the Assembly’s journal, saying that the House would go ahead with the probe. http://thepmnews.com/2010/04/16/there%E2%80%99s-no-stopping-fashola%E2%80%99s-probe-%E2%80%94keyamo |
I still believe, irrespective of whatever anyone says here, IBB will never win any credible elections in Nigeria, and he knows. That is why he is doing consultation. |

Now who bears the cost of fixing the aircraft? Is it Arik Air, Nigerian Air force (which exist in abstract), FAAN who cares less about passengers safety, or even the FG who is dip soaked in power tussle with the cabal? Who really?. |
Arik sends damaged aircraft to Germany By Oyetunji Abioye, Published: Sunday, 4 Apr 2010 Arik Air on Friday said that the Boeing 737-700NG aircraft damaged by a taxi on the tarmac of Margaret Ekpo Airport, Calabar on Wednesday would be sent to Germany for thorough investigation. A taxi driver had reportedly broken two gates of the airport supposedly manned by Air Force officials, and headed straight to tarmac to hit the underbelly of an Abuja-bound Arik that was about to taking off with 95 passengers on board. Quoting the airline‘s Acting Managing Director, Mr. Chris Ndulue, a statement by the airline said the aircraft, which belly was damaged by the taxi, arrived back safely at the airline‘s hangar in Lagos after the Lufthansa Technic engineers had carried out ferry repairs on it in Calabar. Ndulue said, ”We are now in the process of preparing the aircraft for the longer flight to Germany where Boeing and Lufthansa engineers will carry out a thorough check and repairs to determine the extent of damages. The engineers are expected to carry out a NDT tests on the aircraft and certify the aircraft on completion of the repairs.” He said it was through providence and the high specification of Arik Air‘s aircraft that the incident was not more serious. On the length of repairs of the aircraft in Germany, Ndulue said aircraft should be out of service for approximately 30 days. He thanked all the people that identified with the airline over the incident and called on the Nigerian government to take necessary steps to ensure the safety of lives and equipment at the airports. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art20100404355500 |
Hardtalk:From all indication, the main mission of the sponsored suicide bomber, may have nothing to do with the Amercians, but some useless religious beliefs. The state is infested with all manner of religious sects, that feed their people with poisonous doctrine. The presence of the Americans, might just be coincidental. If you go to Calabar on Sunday morning, it is like a ghost town. They have all gone to their various places of worship, and the names of the churches are so funny that, I wonder why GOD is still being patient, with all these false prophets. It is in this same Calabar, that a man calls himself, the god of our time. He even went to the extent of telling the fools called congregation, that he is god, and that none of his children were concieved normally, rather, whenever he wanted a child, he will put water in a glass cup, and give to the wife to concieve. Fallacy of our time. |
Attack on airline: Suspect targeted five Americans, top politicians By Mike Odiegwu, Published: Saturday, 3 Apr 2010 View All (55) Comment(s) Strong indications have emerged that the suspected terrorist who drove a car into Margret Ekpo International Airport‘s tarmac, Calabar, and hit the underbelly of a parked aircraft belonging to Arik Airline on Wednesday might have targeted the five Americans and top politicians on board the aircraft. Investigations by SUNDAY PUNCH revealed that the suspect, Mr. Aniefiok Elijah Okon, from Akwa-Ibom State might have been on a sponsored suicide mission to either embarrass the airline or the country. Apart from the five Americans, top politicians including the Chairman, Cross River State Forestry Commission and former governorship aspirant in the state, Mr. Odinga Odinga, were on board the plane. It was gathered from the police that the manner in which the suspect carried out the aborted attack gave confirmation that he was handed down clear instructions and details of his target by his alleged sponsors. The police in Calabar, Cross River State, disclosed to our correspondent that they were working on a theory that the suspect was engaged in a sponsored mission, adding that thorough investigation was ongoing to unmask the sponsors of the futile attempt. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Etim Dickson, refused to speak on the matter, claiming he was on inspection tour of police formations in the state with the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, when the incident occurred. A top police officer said investigation was in progress. However, another police source who craved anonymity said that two Air Force officers who were on duty when the incident occurred had been recalled to their base for interrogation. Referring to the incident as a security breach, he wondered why the security operatives could not stop the suspect before he got to the tarmac. He said, ”I can assure you that we are doing everything possible to get to the root of this matter. It is a serious security breach and all those involved in it must be fished out and punished. There were five Americans and top politicians on board that plane and we are working on the theory that the futile attack was targeted at them. It was a suicide mission.” The suspect, who is being interrogated at the Criminal Investigation Department of the police command, he added, had been feigning madness. He said: ”Because the attack was not successful, his behaviour at this preliminary stage of our interrogation was expected. We know he is just feigning madness. We know he is just acting a script. He will eventually tell us the truth. The earlier he tells us the truth, the better for him because we must get to the bottom of this matter. ”No madman could have done what he did. He drove a car crashing through two security gates and headed straight for a boarded aircraft. In the process, he even did a U-turn and squeezed the car underbelly and now he is claiming to be mad. We cannot be deceived.” He added that the management of the airline had premonition of the attack but did not expect it to occur in Calabar. He said the airline confirmed it had received several threats of possible attack on its aircraft by unknown persons, but that it did not expect the attack to occur in Calabar. But the Arik Media Officer, Mr. Banji Ola, who spoke to our correspondent on Friday, denied the claim. He frowned on the insinuation saying, ”how can we have premonition of such a dastardly act. It is not true.” On Wednesday, tragedy was averted when a lone occupant of Audi NA 234 KAM breached security at the airport by breaking two gates manned by officials of the Nigerian Air Force and gaining access to the tarmac. Okon who had driven a distance of about 500m in the tarmac unchallenged, headed for the left wing of Boeing 5N-MJJ aircraft, but made a U-turn and buried the car underbelly. Despite the impact, the suspect had remained in the car probably waiting for possible explosion until airport security operatives dragged him out of the scene. But Okon who has been described as a Christian extremist, instead of showing remorse for his action, had rained abuses on everybody at the airport. He had repeatedly said, “You are all sinners. All of you deserve to die because mankind is turning away from God. People in the world are turning away from God. Every human being is wicked and deserved to go to hell except you repent.” The impact of the car on the 95-passenger aircraft which was about taxing down to the runway for take-off had sent jitters into the spines of the passengers who immediately jostled down for safety. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201004031214725 |

Sack Iwu Now; Labour, Civil Society Groups Protest In Abuja March 31, 2010 17:00 (5 hours ago), 369 views By Oluokun Ayorinde & Desmond Utomwen/ Abuja The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and its affiliated unions will embark on a total strike if Professor Maurice Iwu is reappointed as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), after the expiration of his tenure in June. NLC President, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, declared this morning at a national rally held in Abuja in support of electoral reforms. •Labour unionists calling for the removal of INEC boss, Prof. Maurice Iwu, during a protest in Abuja, this morning. PHOTO: FEMI IPAYE. Omar, who led thousands of protesters into the expansive headquarters of INEC in Maitama area of Abuja, said Iwu is one of the major obstalces that must be removed if Nigeria is to have a true electoral reform. He also said that the Anambra State governorship election of 6 February, 2010 was a demonstration of the ineffectiveness of Iwu. The rally, which began at about 9 a.m. today was attended by civil liberty organizations and labour unions including Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, members of Electoral Reform Network, the Trade Union Congress, among others. Protesters carrying placards with inscriptions like “Iwu- Iwuruwuru, He Must Go Now”, “No 2011 Election with Iwu as Chairman,” “Iwu Is a thief,” “Iwu: Pack and go’’, “Maurice Iwu: the face of corruption and “Iwu Is a disgrace to humanity”. The protesters started arriving at the headquarters of NLC in Abuja as at 7 O’clock. They were addressed by labour leaders, including the NLC president before they proceed to the INEC headquarters amidst huge police presence. Other speakers include Professor Awuzie, the president of ASUU, who said that ASUU has resolved at a meeting held a week ago in Ogbomoso, Oyo State that Iwu Must Go. He also said ASUU has disowned Iwu. “Nigerians are fed up with Iwu and we must move on without wasting time,” Awuzie said. President of TUC, Peter Esele, condemned the campaign being sponsored by Iwu to remain in office. According to Esele, The fact that Iwu is using public funds to campaign for his retention as INEC chairman is enough reason to sack him. In the same vein, Comrade Lanre Arogundade, Coordinator of Electoral Reform Network said that Iwu has shown that no free and fair election can take place in Nigeria with him in the saddle. Similarly, Comrade Eskor Toyo, veteran activist cum labour leader said labour must make a resolution to establish its own party. Just as the protesters began a march to the National Assembly, Omar challenged Iwu to come forward with evidence of the N500 million bribe he alleged that the leadership of the labour union collected to organise the rally against him. According to Omar, labour is already in court to defend its integrity over the allegation. “We can’t accept the squandering of public funds to organise fraudulent elections by Iwu any longer,” Omar said, emphasizing that electoral reforms must be carried out before the 2011 elections. The rally was orderly and peaceful although there was tight security by men of the Nigerian police at INEC headquarters in Abuja. However, the protesters were not molested. http://thepmnews.com/2010/03/31/sack-iwu-now-labour-civil-society-groups-protest-in-abuja |

IGP Onovo arrests Senator Ucha, 40 others over Ebonyi crisis Sat, 03/27/2010 - 06:43 — admin , Uche denies arrest By Emmanuel Ogbeche Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, weekend, ordered the arrests of a serving senator from Ebonyi state, Julius Ucha and 40 others over the seeming intractable crisis that has enveloped Ezza-Ezillo communities of the state since May 10, 2008. Onovo gave the order during a meeting at his instance with the stakeholders cutting across political office holders, government officials and leaders of thought, at the force headquarters in Abuja. The IG who traced the origin of the crisis to land dispute between the Ezzas and the Ezillos said it was one that has caused concern to everyone in the region, noting that two committees comprised of clergies, traditional rulers and other stakeholders had been set up to resolve the issue. These committees, which the IG said had used both conventional and traditional methods of settlement and negotiations, had failed in resolving the issue, noting that police and military intervention had also failed. He decried the fact that the police had already lost 16 personnel and other private citizens including a director from Cross River State who was killed while travelling through the state during the week. Onovo added that police stations had been burnt in the course of the crises as well as police armed personnel carriers have been destroyed. The police boss accused the stakeholders of sponsoring the crisis for selfish reasons as the intelligence had revealed that the perpetrators of the crime could not afford to buy the arms and weapons they employ. According to him, he was not interested in discussing settlement with the group rather had invited them to Abuja to facilitate their arrest and enable his men move in to the state, pointing out that they would be detained until peace was restored in the area. While apologizing for the inconvenience of keeping them in detention, Onovo said the police must do what they have to do as the people had proved over time that they understand only the language of force. He wondered why since inception in office he has had the greatest challenge from the South East and was ready to use force to restore peace to the region. The dispute between the communities is believed to have been hijacked by politicians who are alleged to have armed youths and other hoodlums in the state to attack members of the public and create insecurity to score political points against political opponents. African Herald Express investigations revealed that 15 of the arrested persons include a serving senator, Julius Ucha, two local government chairmen, two commissioners and an Abuja based journalist representing the state association in the FCT were however granted bail on personal recognition. When contacted, Senator Ucha told this paper that he was not arrested as he had gone to the meeting at the Force Headquarters on his own volition as they were seeking a lasting solution to the lingering crisis. According to him, he left the Inspector General’s office after the meeting but would not acknowledge if the IG had ordered the arrest of all present at the meeting. http://www.africanheraldexpress.com/?q=content/igp-onovo-arrests-senator-ucha-40-others-over-ebonyi-crisis |

‘700 NYSC corps members ready for redeployment in Plateau’ ABOUT 700 Batch “A” members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to Plateau State have indicated interest to redeploy from the state. The state coordinator, Mr Tunde Baba-Ahmed, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos, on Thursday, adding that more corps members submitted their redeployment forms after the initial 400. “Now, there are about 700 corps members who have filled the forms for redeployment. “We have sent the first batch of the redeployment forms to Abuja. We may send the second batch latest on Tuesday. “But there are others who also have not submitted their forms. Those ones will be posted within Jos after their orientation,” Baba-Ahmed said. He added that the House of Representatives resolution only affected the Batch “A”, adding that any Batch “B” or “C” member, who wanted redeployment could also apply. The coordinator said he was only acting on the directive from the Federal Ministry of Youths, adding that he could not contravene the order. However, the Plateau State government said it would go to court if the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier-General Ismaila Tsiga, redeployed the corps members. The state Commissioner for Information, Mr Gregory Yenlong, said the NYSC scheme, initiated by a son of Plateau, General Yakubu Gowon, was established as an instrument of national integration and development. According to him, the redeployment was against the policy of the scheme, as corps members were redeployed only on marital grounds and extreme cases of ill health. http://www.tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/3180-700-nysc-corps-members-ready-for-redeployment-in-plateau.html |

Hardtalk:Nah wah oh!. |
Gaddafi is mad –Mark He’s insane–Mark From FRANCIS AWOWOLE-BROWNE, Abuja Thursday, March 18, 2010 The Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi incurred the ire of senators yesterday over comments credited to him that Nigeria should split into two as a panacea to incessant bloodshed in some parts of the country. Fuming with anger, the Senate President, David Mark said it was only an insane man that would make such a comment, describing the Libyan president as a man whose word should not be taken seriously. “Why should we take him serious? Gaddafi needs not be glorified and given attention by with a reaction. He deserves no attention; he said the same thing to Switzerland, he said the same thing to England, he said the same thing to Sweden, why should we give him attention?” the Senate president noted. Senator. Mark, was reacting to contribution from Senator Anyim Ude (Ebonyi State) on the debate on Mondays bomb blasts in Warri during the post-amnesty talks organized by the Vanguard Newspaper. Senator. Ude, while contributing to the amendment of prayers of the Senate on the bomb blasts incident had brought out a copy of Daily Sun with the caption “Split Nigeria” in which the Libyan leader was said to have advised the Nigerian authorities while speaking to African students. The senator had suggested that part of the prayer should be that leaders should be cautioned against making inflammatory comments capable of inciting violence and passion in the Niger Delta. He had hardly finished when the Senate president cut in and dismissed the Libyan president. Commenting on the remarks by Gaddafi, other senators who spoke with Daily Sun condemned him in the same manner describing him as an enemy of Nigeria who should be ignored for whatever he represented. Senator Mohammed Jubril (Kaduna) said the comments by Gaddafi had really shown that he was indeed a mad man who need ed to be examined. “I have not read the report in details, as I am just coming in but from what I have heard, the man is really out of his senses. In his own comment, Senator Joel Danlami (Taraba) said the Libyan leader was a reckless leader that should not be dignified with any response. “His madness is incurable. Nigerians have lived together and we have mixed together, Christians, Muslims have lived together, we have intermarried; I believe we need to continue to live together. “Even in Israel, in some areas we still have Muslims and in some others Arabs are there. Gaddafi to me, has lost his conscience and he is not a leader people should listen to. He should just carry his cross and leave Nigeria alone. He should limit himself to Libya. “Nigeria is not the only country that has crisis. What will he say of Sudan, what solution will he give to Sudan where religious crisis has been the order of the day? It is madness. He is mentally unstable. Gaddafi is reckless and people like him should be disregarded.” Speaking in the same vein, Senator Salihu Ohize said the comment of the Libyan leader should not be given any weight. “He is not wishing Nigeria well. It is the greatest disservice to Nigeria. It’s condemnable; what he is saying is arrant nonsense, lets ignore him.” Senator Heneiken Lokpobiri (Bayelsa) said Nigeria is an indivisible country adding that all the corporate entities have been living together for a long time. “We can’t break.” In his comments, Senator Smart Adeyemi (PDP Kogi) said for the fact that Nigeria fought a civil war and survived it and had equally experienced different religious crises which were resolved amicably was a clear indication that the people of Nigeria had sworn to a common destiny. “Gaddafi must realize that Nigeria is not Libya and must therefore understand that he is not in a position to dictate to us how we live as a people. Nigerians are not religious bigots even in the midst of poverty. We may have crisis now but certainly, we shall overcome the problems like we did in the past.” In his own comments, Senator Abubakar Sodangi (PDP Nasarawa) said that Gaddafi should be ignored by Nigerians as he was not in a position to fully understand the real issues involved in Nigeria. Col. Gaddafi had said that one of the best ways of resolving the incessant ethno-religious crisis in the country was for Nigeria to go the way of Pakistan and India that separated and resolved their religious crisis. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/newsonthehour/2010/mar/18/newsbreak-18-03-2010-001.htm |

With this figure, and current events (unemployment etc) in this country, will kidnapping ever end in Nigeria? |
Kidnappers collected N10bn as ransom in 1 year - Investigation It has been revealed that over N10 billion has been paid by relatives of victims to kidnappers in the last one year, particularly foreigners. Also, about 400 suspected kidnappers are currently being held in various police cells nationwide, while some were being prosecuted in the law courts. Nigerian Tribune investigations and documents obtained from police sources, revealed that in the last one year, not less than 200 kidnappers had been arrested, while trying to collect, ransom from their victims relatives. The source disclosed that, kidnapping, which started in the Niger Delta area by ex-militants as part of their agitation for resource control, suddenly spread like a wild fire all over the country because of the monetary gains derived from it. The battle to stop kidnapping, which has now become a commercial venture in the South East, led to the deployment of extra 10 squadrons of anti-riot policemen to Anambra State. Nigerian Tribune also gathered that the police hierarchy, in its bid to halt the spread of kidnapping, was currently pushing for a bill at the National Assembly for the registration of sim- cards by all service providers. Furthermore, the source disclosed that the police was currently dialoguing with banks on the provision of special naira notes printed with tracking ink. The latest on kidnapping, is the wife of the former Nigeria Breweries Managing Director, Festus Odimegwu, last Sunday. About 30 gunmen broke into a Catholic Church in Asa-Obiriehem, Imo State and kidnapped Stella, the wife of Odimegwu. Also some states across the country has passed laws making kidnapping an offence punishable with death. http://www.tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/2670-kidnappers-collected-n10bn-as-ransom-in-1-year-investigation.html |
