ProgrammingRe: A Way Forward For The Field Of Computer Science In Nigeria by henryskywalker2003(m):
And for those of you thinking that Computer Science is just about programming, think again cos if it were so, why is that all you guys ever get to learn are java, vb.net and php? At best some can get to have skills in others like ruby. Why are you not well versed in programming languages or are those the only 3 or 4 available for writing codes? The answer is that, it is the ones that are popular this side of the world. APTECH and NIIT can never open their doors tomorrow and start training folks in languages like python, c++, assembly etc. It's not selling here, why? Because, our so called "8 months programmers" wont have the capacity nor even want to learn it. They just want to learn one or two little things that are popular and go and start claiming to be programmers. Ask anyone that went thru that their "8 months training" to come and write an embedded OS for a device, using java, let me see if he can even have the foggiest idea of where to begin, yet he will claim to be a java programmer (in my school, we have a course on operating systems where you are taught the basics and building blocks of an OS). Computer Science covers a lot of things and, even though the curriculum in Nigeria is outdated and leaves a lot to be desired, the fact still remains that those outdated programs lay a solid foundation to build upon if you want to learn (for instance, my knowledge in QBASIC helped me to grasp the concepts of C++ when I started learning it on my own). You just don't sit down and expect your lecturers to give you everything. Not even abroad will they do so. You've got to build yourself up man, no one's gonna do it for you. The Bill Gates that you guys are so fond of, have you ever wondered how he got to be that good? Or you think he was born with the skills? He exposed himself to computers early and started developing himself in it, with a couple of help here and there. If you ask me, go and learn Computer Science/Engineering/Technology for 4/5 years first, then specialise in that your programming if you so desire. I bet you, if you ever do the 4years first, you'll be exposed to things you never will be exposed to in that 8 months or even 2years at NIIT. Heck, you'll even get to know of other areas that are infinitely more interesting than programming.
ProgrammingRe: A Way Forward For The Field Of Computer Science In Nigeria by henryskywalker2003(m):
@Kodewrita, seriously, you need to snap out of being too much of a fanboi and get your facts straight. That Linus Torvalds has a computer to play with was because of Gates contribution to I.T. industry? Seriously? Are you high on some cheap drugs or something? Next thing you gonna come out here and tell us that DOS was the first Operating System there is. Thank God you mentioned the Altair computer but let me not digress and correct your misconception, Bill Gates Windows cashed in on a situation when the industry's standard regulatory body decided that all OEM should make their hardware according to a standard, Windows wasn't the ONLY OS written for them. There was CP/M (which MS-DOS kinda imitates), GEOS and a host of others. Why MS-DOS became popular was because it was chosen by IBM, the most popular OEM in the day, to ship with their newly launched line of home PCs and hence, everyone automatically had an MS-DOS if you have an IBM machine. Windows, Apple's Mac OS and Linux was based on one of the pioneers of modern operating system, UNIX. (Apple also took code from FreeBSD too). Linus was a student when he started work on Linux with the aim of improving some things he didn't like about UNIX and not MS-DOS. Back in the days, no Computer Science student brags with MS-DOS, not when you have to deal with UNIX, BSD, Altair, Commodore 64 etc. As for the porting of Basic to the Altair, he wrote it in conjuction with Allen and it was an interpreter that he wrote for a NEWLY developed machine that the company had no OS for and had to outsource. Other existing machines could run programs. Get your facts right my man.

P.S. If Bill Gates was so damn good in writing codes, how come it has more malware written (and with ease) than anyother OS? How come that even when a new product from them is still in the beta stages of development, cracks/keygens/patches are already abound online for it? How come they need to set tuesdays aside for pushing out tons of patches to plug up holes that only end up being bypassed before the week runs out.

P.S. Please note that I'm not trying to knock on Etisalat cos I myself use their network and I agree it is quite fast within my area. Even on the gprs, I do hit download speeds of 52kbps. But I can never claim them to be as fast as a 3G network should be. Heck, no network in naija can claim that.
ComputersRe: Etisalat Internet - Blazing Fast Internet by henryskywalker2003(m): 12:36pm On May 15, 2012
@fados4sure. Wht I love about simpletons like you is that whenever anyone comes and spews anything to you and tells you that he/she is foreign based, you accept it as the gospel truth without confirmation, forgeting that the internet has made the world a global village hence, you don't need to leave ur house to know what is happening elsewhere. Not to digress too much, let me educate you a bit in telecomm goings around the world. Currently, the fastest network you can get is the LTE networks (informally called 4G but not really 4G though cos it didn't meet all the specs of 4G. Also, Mobile WIMAX is also a 4G network). Phones are just being released that can operate on such networks by Motorola, BB and Samsung starting Q4 2011. AT&T of america is still upgrading to it and have LTE in SOME not ALL of their coverage areas. So, are you telling me that Malayasia is so far ahead that they are upgrading to 6G when the ppl that invented the whole shenigans are yet to invent 5G (according to wikipedia, 5G is going to be implemented around 2020)? It's people like you that usually fall for GSM networks and ISPs adverts claiming cheap broadband speeds. How many of their subscribers can boast of a typical broadband speed at any given time? (Average broadband speeds in countries like UK, USA and Canada are between 7-21mbps download speed without any accelerators. Heck, my friend in Canada downlads his linux iso files of 2gb in minutes). Next time, before you post rubbish to back some silly post (ie if you are not even the same person as the OP) do some research and stay within reasonable limits. Not everyone on NL is a fool you know?

Microsoft has shown the power of innovation my foot. Puleeeeze. How innovative can one be when you borrow elements from different already existing Desktops and mix and match them together to create ur own. The interface is only gud for tablets and can be quite limiting on desktops and laptops. Another stupid innovation, who ever came up with the stupid idea of removing the start menu and forcing me to switch from the desktop to the metro menu just so that I can launch an app. Seems this is gonna be another vista fiasco. Am sticking with my 7 for now.

@yahoo, you are being unreasonable, so until they bring down their bis you won't see them as a better telcom company? So, what if they charge you 1naira per year for bis and 50 naira per second on calls and 100 naira per text nko? You'll say they are the best right? You've got to compare all the services been offered and rate them accordingly then find the sum total of all the marks obtained to get their overall performance and not rate them base on one service that you only probably make use of.

The funny thing is that all the time I've been to computer village to get one thing or the other, I've never come across it. Think it's rare in this part of the world or the sellers at the village don't think it will move quickly if they bring it in knowing fully well that the price of a 128gb SSD can fetch you a 500gb drive or higher. Though, I once saw a hybrid drive but didn't bother asking for the price.

Ehmmm, Just a side note sha. For those calling Bill Gates one of the greatest coders eva, I think you guys must have lost it. Why? Take a look at each iteration of the Windows OS, even with it being proprietory and all (closed source), it is the most easily penetratable, so bad that the company sets out a day every week, called "patch tuesdays" just too patch up system flaws that ends up being penetrated again before the week runs out.
Now, take a look at Linus Torvalds that designed the Linux OS when he was just a student and compare the two works. I know you guys will start shouting about it being Open Source and many people working on it, but the same goes for Windows. Or were you thinking that it's Bill Gates that codes the entire thing? If that's not ok with you, then compare the first windows and the first linux and tell me which is better and a more solid os. My point? There are lots of things about computing that a graduate can always do better than someone that learnt just a few aspects of it. Give them the credit, they spent 4years learning everything there is to know about the danm machine. In fact if you ask me, BASIC, COBOL, FORTRAN etc shouldn't be scrapped cos any body that has a good understanding of the above can easily learn java, asp, .net etc far easily than someone that started with java. Those are the basics and if you know them, you can even bring in some concepts to from them into the new one you are learning. Check out any good university curriculum abroad, they still teach those languages, heck, they even expose them to UNIX and other ancient OS so as to have a solid understanding of the basics.
PhonesRe: Blackberry Vs Android by henryskywalker2003(m): 10:57am On Mar 06, 2012
@OP. Between a blackberry and an
android, I can't really tell you to go for
one over the other but let me list some
advantages and disadvantages the two
has.
Advantages of Blackberry.
1. Great data compression that can save
you some precious data at the end of
the month.
2. Seemingly unlimited data. Why do I
say this? Check at the bottom of almost
all the network websites, on the
blackberry bundle page, they always
state "fair usage applies". Meaning,
that you'll get enough data that an
average user is supposed to consume in
a month and if you exceed that, they
won't cut you off, rather will start
deducting money from ur account for
any further usage. I have personally
put this to the test and it is so for mtn
and glo.
3. Social networking on the go.
4. BBM.
5. Great push email and office apps.
6. All your data passes thru blackberry
server hence, increased security.
Disadvantages of Blackberry.
1. BIS subscription is necessary to
enjoy any of the above features.
2. No native pdf veiwer. You can only
view pdf files sent thru email but once
you download it to the device, you can't
veiw it in anyway unless u buy a pdf
viewer app from the appworld.
3. You can't share your data with your
other devices.
4. Got to carry a charger or a spare
battery.
5. Turns off your radio antenna when
battery is low.
6. Can not expand it's abilities easily. Eg,
it plays avi and mp4 videos but can't
play mkv, asf and a host of other
formats unless you "probably" pay for a
video app.
7. No radio.
8. Takes 3-5mins to boot after a
battery pull or dead battery.
9. Inefficient taskmanager (there are
some apps that you can't close even if
you don't use it eg BBM, browser,
email) they all make the battery run
down faster.
10. No free browsing cheats.
11. Few great games.
Advantages of Android.
1. Great selection of apps, especially if
you are a geek. Eg, I've been able to
telnet and ssh into a remote router
from my bed like I used to do with my
nokia.
2. Tweakablilty. You can control a lot of
things in it easily, from startup apps to
downright changing your OS to a
different version even before they ever
release it for the phone.
3. Social networking on the go.
4. Great office apps (with native pdf
viewer).
5. Phones ability can be expanded. Eg,
can't extract rar files? Download
zarchiver and you can extract zip, rar,
ace, 7zip, iso, etc with just one app. Can't
view mkv? Download moboplayer and
you can watch a whole range of other
formats including vob.
6. You get great hardware at a cheaper
price eg, the only bb with hd capabilities
(playback and recording) is Bold 9900
and Torch 9810 ie Bold 5 and Torch 2
respectively. A Sony Ericsson Xperia
Ray does that and cost's half their
prices.
7. Variety of makers and devices to
choose from, Samsung, S.E. HTC, LG,
Motorola, Huawei etc.
8. Ability to share your data connection.
9. Ability to use free browsing cheats.
Lol.
10. Lots of free great games (ie if you
like games on phones, I don't).
Disadvantages of Android.
1. Having too much apps can drain the
battery faster than normal espcially
data consuming apps.
2. No data compression like BB hence,
more data might be required.
3. No BBM (Naija folks see it as a
disavantage but lets face it, nimbuzz,
ebuddy, whatsapp can do the same
thing bbm can).
4. Won't score points with most ladies if
you are not with a bb. Lol.
5. You can actually pick up viruses from
the Android market, so anti-virus is
needed.

Guys feel free to add anymore that I might have left out for both platforms.

@SimonAndal, BB has a compression normal ratio of 6:1. Compare that your figures with this ratio and tell me if what you say makes sense.
PhonesRe: Blackberry Vs Android by henryskywalker2003(m): 12:34am On Mar 03, 2012
@SimonAndal, stop telling blatant lies like a kid here. Windows is 3.3gb and ubuntu is roughly 700mb. How does that make 6gb? And besides, bb compresion rates is not that efficient. If you had said you used only 1.5-2gb to do that, then it's quite plausible.
