OPINION: Ilorin and the Family House Thing by Tunji Ajanaku

Ilorin is a very unique community. A blend of cultures that still give a lot of Nigerians further down south of the River Niger difficulties in understanding. I lived in Lagos between 2000 and 2010 and down there, when you joined the Tabligh Janmaa to celebrate Sallah after only 29 days of fasting instead of 30, your neighbors would say jokingly that you have celebrated " Odun Malla", Sallah of the Northerners. And when it was time to travel home for the Eid Adha aka Big Sallah and they saw us going home, we would return the joke to them that if you don't go on pilgrimage to Mecca and you travel home to Ilorin for sallah, the spiritual reward is the same. That's the pride that pumps up adrenaline in the typical Ilorin man.

Over the years, many of us reluctantly at first, have moved out of the family house system and have set up abodes in GRA and other outskirts of Ilorin. And by culture, when we buy our rams, cows, and goats, the only sensible place to slaughter the animals is the family house. Whether we spend 3 hours, 4 hours or the whole day in the family house, it's the place to be after Eid prayers.

I saw video clips of very horrid things involving cows especially when they were about to be slaughtered. These cows went wild and were hurting handlers. Something tells me this is unlikely to have happened in the family house setting. The cows were being handled by inexperienced handlers and there were too many spectators everywhere that frightened the shit out of the cows, hence their going bananas. The scariest of these videos was one in which a frightened cow on the loose was dragging a young man on the leash along a very rough street. One can only imagine the injuries the guy must have suffered. I am certain none of these scary events took place in any family house in Ilorin. There are careful handlers and butchers around in each of these situations in a family house setting. We killed all kinds of animals, camels inclusive without any drama.

Dressing the ram used to be 100% a family thing. We would remove the skin, the intestines, legs and heads on day one and hang the carcass till the second day to complete the cutting of the meat. As economy improved and number of rams killed increased, the services of professional butchers became necessary. In those days we knew which brother or Uncle loved meat like wolves. The smoked skin of the ram or goat was a delicacy and the man holding the knife would cut that skin and throw into his mouth while dressing the carcass. When we, the small rats grumbled, he would cut small pieces for us. We called it "bata"(shoe). How this smoked skin came to be called "bata", I don't know till today. That's the family house setting for you.

It's not as if we do meetings per se or plan anything as such, but we eat, drink(not liquor), sit down, gist and review the past year. A lot of us may have not sat down to gist like this for the whole year or more. It's time to discuss family matters, politics, community, share news about our children, friends, news about town, the drama at the eid praying ground, if any, the palace horse racing and stuff. If anyone buys a new car and he hasn't brought it home before, this is the time to launch it. Everyone prays on the new ride. If anyone has moved to his new house, he still won't spend Sallah on that first day in the new house but at the family house. We go see him on day 2 to pray. If anyone had taken a new wife albeit secretly, he must launch the new bride that day because the new madam has to show up and greet her in-laws. This is the import of the gathering.

The meals we consume on this day comes from different homes. While there could be tuwo rice from my house, I might end up eating the fried rice from my brother's wife. This is the kind of kinship that Chinua Achebe talked about in his novel, Things Fall Apart.

One noticeable aspect of the gathering is the nostalgia our sisters who are now married have for this gathering. They would have to go to the family houses of their husbands on that first day of Sallah. To make up, since the Sallah always extend to the second day, they would return to their roots to celebrate Sallah with their parents. They bring their children to celebrate with grandmas and grandpas. This is the day they when thr grand children get some spoiling a little. It's beyond the meat thing.

I was discussing this with a friend yesterday morning and he was impressed by this family house thing in Ilorin. It's not as if brothers and sisters in Ilorin don't get to have issues with one another but in a lot of cases, the family house gathering is a good ground for settling those matters. The gathering in the family house either on day 1 or day 2 of Sallah more often than not is not for meetings to plan how to dig borehole, construct drainage and such things but in most cases, it's usually a time to commission or unveil such projects. It's also a time to submit CVs to the big men in the family or ask for an update on the CV earlier forwarded to the big man. This is because, somehow, tension is less and the holiday feeling is written all over the faces of everyone. That's the Ilorin family house spirit.

There may be nothing special about all of these as it happens in a lot of places but my community is a bit different. The blend of Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani, Kanuri, Nupe, Baruba and almost every ethnic groups you can think of in Nigeria that make up Ilorin and the bond of Islam provided the ingredient for this family house thing. In Ilorin, for many that work and live in Ilorin, we still find time almost on daily basis to visit family house "assemblies" to update ourselves, gist, of course, pray Maghrib, sometimes Ishai and head back to our GRA or Tanke or Oke Foma abodes.

There's the "owo odun" thing - "Sallah money" which goes around. It's usually not huge bales of cash but little cash here and there that is given to the children and the young wives. While it is not compulsory, it's gratifying. It may get to a point that your purse becomes very lean or goes flat as a result but it doesn't hurt in anyway as you are gratified by the fact that you have shared the cash among your extended family members. Its a lot of goodwill too.

One very important observation however is the condition of many of our family houses. Many of them don't bear the reflection of the eminent personalities that are products of such houses. In the last decade pls however, some are getting befitting facelifts. I know one where the floor of the entire compound is now in interlocking blocks with solar lights. The culture of constructing befitting kofar (main gate) is the new norm now. There are instances where, rather than build those mighty mansions in Mandate Estate or GRA 2, some have elected to build them in the family houses - commendable.

Secondly, Human capital development is one of the greatest problems. Interestingly enough, many of the young ones in the forefront of raising funds for the renovations of family houses are in the front line of human capital underdevelopment. It's a big challenge indeed. The jobs are not there really but this is the time to think out of the box and look at becoming entrepreneurs that can also create jobs.
No place like home, the Ilorin family house sentiment epitomises this a lot. I agree it could be happening elsewhere, but I know my own beloved city well.

You didn't read my post well,or you misunderstood me.I specifically made mention of a comprehensive screening and interview. I never said the government should absorb all of them.Only the competent ones should be retained. By so doing the ones that are not qualified for the job will see know body to blame.

I know you will argue with me based on the fact that they never attended teachers college but trust me a lot of graduate have what it takes to be a teacher.

They may know WHAT to teach but WHEN & HOW to teach may be a challenge to those without teaching qualification. Erase the general belief that ANYBODY CAN TEACH. We call them "cheaters" and not TEACHERS.

Educationists are clamouring for the abolishment of PGDE & sandwich programmes if teaching is to be fully professionalised like medicine, law and engineering.

Two dismissed police officers from Kwara state police command have petitioned the Inspector General of police (IGP) and the state police Commissioner Kayode Egbetokun alleging illegal dismissal from service.

They are asking the police high command to review their cases for probable prompt reinstatement.
In a jointly signed petition the aggrieved police officers also sent copies the petition to Assistant Inspector General Zone 8 Lokoja, Egbe Afenifere, Civil Liberties Organization, Okun Development Association.

The officers, Akano Shola (Sergeant) and Babatunde Glorious, (Corporal) with 14 and 9 years in service, accused some top brass of the police for allegedly hindering free flow of investigations and prosecutions of suspects apprehended by the command.
Shola and Glorious alleged that their dismissal was not unrelated to their refusal to allegedly bow to pressure from some senior officers to release some robbery suspects in their custody.
The dismissed officers canvassed open and transparent investigations into their detention and orderly room trial which lasted for 15 days upon trumped up charges.

They added that some of the police officers are allegedly benefiting from the activities of the suspects.
The petition reads: "We are aware that a certain police officer in the Administrative Department (name withheld) in the Kwara State Command is begrudging us for our non-conformist stance with respect to cases which he and other senior officers have interest in.

"Meanwhile, our stance in each of those cases was not out of insubordination and/or disrespect to lawful authorities but as a result of our firm belief that the law should take its normal cause particularly as regards grievous and recurring offences.
"We make bold to say that the allegations against us which led to our dismissal are unfounded and designed to get rid of us for not compromising with some suspects who to all intent and purpose have links to the senior officers in the Command.

"It is on record that sometime(s) sic in December 2018, one Dr Omowumi AbdulRazak brought a complaint to the Public Complaint Bureau, Ilorin command that he was robbed of his car and other valuables at gun point.
"The undersigned and others were detailed to investigate the matter which led to the arrest of some suspects (both male) who are found to be in the habit of donning military camouflage shirts to dispossess unsuspecting citizens of their belongings at gunpoint
"They were found in possession of the complainant's car alongside other cars with sundry forged documents, spare keys and number plates which were recovered from them in Faraway Nasarawa state sometime in 2019. The suspects have since been charged to court for conspiracy, armed robbery, forgery, receiving stolen property and theft.

"Not surprising of the characteristics of Nigerian society, top officer at the Administrative Department and a woman sergeant (name withheld) with other senior police officers whose names we don't want to mention because of our lives, started mounting pressure on us to release the suspects and compromise the case of which overture was bluntly refused by us.
"When it became obvious that we would not accede to their request for terminating the case at the station, they requested through the said woman sergeant that the offence of 'Armed Robbery' be removed from the alleged offences with an offer of three million naira (N3, 000,000:00) which we still refused, hence, drawing the battle line between us and the said officers.
"Further to this, a senior officer of the administrative department personally met us to tell us that those boys were his boys and that the camouflages being used in their respective operations belong to their father and as such, they should not be held liable for any offence."

The dismissed officers said while the matter lasted, another case of fraud was referred to them for investigations in which the suspects were apprehended and refunded the money to the victim. They added that somewhere along the line, they were allegedly framed up by the said suspects which led to the detention of the former officers for 15 days.

According to them "while in detention, we were handcuffed, tortured with our clothes torn and were taken through all forms of dehumanization all through the period of our detention until when the O/C SARS intervened before we were un-cuffed."
The petitioners said that while in detention, a motion seeking for the release of the stolen cars and other property impounded from the suspects were allegedly served on the office, adding that "but for the COVID-19 imposed holiday, the motion would have been heard unopposed."

They claimed to have filed a counter affidavit to the motion as soon as they were admitted to bail noting that, "that was the time when we understood that we were fighting against a ring. It is not a surprise therefore that it was the same office that defaulted us that tried us and eventually went ahead to dismiss us."

For the petitioners "a lot of crimes are being covered up and criminal investigations being sabotaged and compromised to the detriment of the image of the force and the safety of the entire populace and unfortunately, it is being masterminded by some of the Senior police officers who are benefiting immensely from the perpetrators of these crimes."

Kwara has for the first time recorded the highest number of daily cases, 71. Those are higher than the cases the state recorded in the first two months of getting on the pandemic table in Nigeria. I predict as exponential increase more so as the state accredited testing centre takes off. The handwritings have been on the wall for a long time.

Kwarans have largely gone about their daily lives as if COVID-19 doesn't exist. I will limit myself to examining the simple preventive measures that we are all advised to adhere to. These measures are the use of facemasks in public, observing physical distancing of two metres, washing hands frequently and use of hand sanitiser, and avoidance of crowds.

Just go round the towns and pass your verdict on these measures. A sincere observer like me has written about the nonchalance of the people. Government gave us the responsibility but we have failed. People don't wear facemasks. When you do see a face mask on individuals, mostly its not worn appropriately and therefore as good as not wearing one. The use of facemask stops the inhalation of infected droplets, and also prevents you spreading the disease if you have it. One method, two advantages. As a matter of fact, people who wear facemasks are taunted and laughed at.

Do I need to say anything about physical distancing? We simply don't see any need for it. People sit together chatting and playing nonsense games. Social gatherings are going on unhindered. Some with mammoth crowds. So where is the physical distancing in a crowd? And people stay in those places for hours in the name of weddings, funeral/burial and naming ceremonies. We just find one reason to gather and we do without any conscious. What of the places of worship??We simply don't think we are responsible for anything as Nigerians that's my point. Are we waiting for government again? Government has guidelines in place but I have not seen much enforcement in kwara. Perhaps, government expected much more from us as citizens. Now that we have not been so responsible and responsive, perhaps, government will start more enforcement. Why not enforce the guidelines?

Anyone caught in social gatherings should be sanctioned. Even when we knew people died of COVID-19, my people still went there. What for? The figures will keep climbing, and who knows who will not survive it.
It is wisdom, love for self and others and patriotism to obey the COVID-19 guidelines. These measures will help reduce transmission and flatten the curve. The scientific community is getting to know the disease better but still needs plenty answers. Until a known cure is found, stay safe. Together we can.

The ringleader of a notorious gang terrorising Ibadan , Oyo State , Osun and Lagos states , Enioluwa Adebayo , has opened up on his four - year stint in robbery.
Popularly known as Judgement, an alias he earned for killing victims who put up resistance, 23-year - old Adebayo led a three -man gang operating mostly on motorcycles .
It was learnt that the gang also carried out ‘ brisk operations ’ early morning and in the evening , robbing passersby of their valuables .
City Round gathered that Adedayo and a member of the gang, Sunday Olubushe aka
Ajegunle, were arrested recently by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team in Oyo State .
Detectives went after the suspects after they engaged in a shootout with some soldiers who attempted to foil their robbery operation at a popular supermarket in Mokola area of the state in March 2020.
He was eventually tracked down at his girlfriend’ s house where he was treating gunshot injuries he sustained during the faceoff with soldiers . He led the operatives to arrest Olubushe.
One Tunde Kasari , said to be the second -in -command , is still at large .
“ They told us that it was one Baba Esther that usually assisted them in buying guns at the rate of N 30, 000. One Lambe helped them to get their ammunition for N 17, 000. Judgement and his gang stayed in a hotel around Ibadan from where they launched their attacks , ” a police source stated.
While being paraded during the week , the gang leader , who hails from Osun State , said he was introduced to robbery while he was trying to raise money for his freedom after completing his apprenticeship as a barber.
Adebayo said , “ I finished secondary school in 2015 and started learning barbing. After six months , my boss asked me to look for money for my freedom. I started riding a commercial motorcycle . I met one Lekan , also known as
Corporal, who introduced me to robbery.
“ We started by stealing motorcycles from where they were parked at night . Within a year, I stole many motorcycles in Ibadan together with Corporal before we switched into full-time armed robbery . ”
He stated that they bought guns and went for their first robbery operation in the Ikire area of Osun State on two motorcycles .
He said the attack was botched as their target and his neighbours quickly raised the alarm and chased them away.

Adebayo stated , “ I broke my leg in that operation . I was arrested and taken to the station, where I spent about one month. I was later released when the pain from my injured leg was too much and the people who brought me to the station were not forthcoming .
“ I went home and my gang members took care of me . They brought my share after every operation . I rejoined the gang when I got healed and we started doing ‘ stop-and- search robbery. ’
“ Whenever we see people walking on the road, we would stop and search them with our guns and take valuables found on them . We did this in the morning and in the evening and we were doing it all over Ibadan. ”
He said in 2018, they raided a house in the airport area , Ibadan, where he killed a man who allegedly resisted him .
He added , “ When we got there , the owner of the house hit me on the head with a big iron and I fell . I was bleeding and asked my boys to pin the man to the ground. I hacked him to death with a machete . We left without getting the money we went for .
“ The second person I killed was in March 2020. We attacked a woman operating a bar around 11pm in Ojo area . One of my boys known as Tunde grabbed the woman ’ s bag from her and when we were about to leave , the woman poured drinks on my face and held me .
“ She was trying to prevent me from escaping . I became angry and shot her . I killed her on the spot. I also carried out some robberies in Lagos State . ”
He said he realised between N 70, 000 and N 80, 000 on each operation , but spent all the money on women and clothes .
“ I regret all I have done and I hope the police will forgive me and give me a second chance , ” he pleaded .

Have u gone back to collect it? My worry is that: this is a federal government programme, is the money going directly into government's purse? Are the NIMC officials the ones extorting the masses?
