Car Talk › Re: Toyota Rav 4 Brain Box Issue by honmusa(m): 2:18pm On Aug 06, 2017 |
Inception: What modules if I may ask? The issue here is the car not starting, strongly implying a powertrain issue. This localizes the problem to the only one module: the ECU and everything it controls/manages(since we are talking Toyota here and not BMW). There are therefore 3 possibilities here: Bad Ecu fuse, Bad Alternator fuse or bad ECU. Following the explanation of the OP, (where there is a short of that kind, It is very likely that the Alternator fuse will go out first, then the Ecu fuse before such wahala gets to the ECU itself. It is called 'Failsafe'
Another possiblilty could be the immobilizer if the car is equipped with one. Yes is still the same engine computer module ,i am not interested in the other modules .this is just a quick troubleshooting tip to check the types of fault with ECU . If the ECU is down or unavailable relatively to other ones ,that is pointer to a power feed or ground issue with the ECU and this will help you checking for all those instead of wasting time probing the ignition and the fuel injection terminal on the ecu or even disturbing the immobilizer. This is just a sharp sharp quide to the type of ecu issue before you going down to the specifics eg fuse, open circuit ,shortcircuits etc .Hope i have made myself clear on this!!! |

Inception: Scanning won't solve this oga. The ECU cannot be accessed for codes in this kind of situation. Bros , scanning for modules is what i mentioned not looking for dtc !!!there is a huge wide difference between the two !!! You want to scan for modules to see all the available ecu that are online ,you are not chasing for codes (dtc) everyrywhere as being done by those kazeem that have access to scanner !!!this is not a feature you can see in your $5 dollar scanner!!!!you will need a little bit high end tools to achieve this, you dont need a brain to do this just to see if your ecu is powered up !! You can achieve bypass a lot of electrical torubleshooting if you invest in the expensive smart scan tool ,those cheap chinese scraps scanners you are use to are useless !!

indigene: Recently i had plugs change, one of the plugs, counting right to left facing the engine the second plug has a some what black soot, the mechanic informed me that the airflow meter needs a rest, or a change. What are other negative impacts do an assumed airflow meter have? Is actually the mechanic that need to be changed cos what he is insinuating doesn't make sense . Presence of black soot indicates rich mixture and what diagnosis precodure does he indulge in to be able isolate out the MAf .I am sure after changing the MAF and the issue persist ,the next item will be the ECU (Brainbox ) . Try to engage a recommended professional mechanic to diagnose this issue for you to avoid expensive trial and error change of parts . |

Cumboss: Hello I know this post is old but this is the only tread i could find with useful info, my issue is this I changed my gasket which my mechanic advised we use the paper type instead of the steel type that came with the car now after 4 days I noticed my oil shorts faster than it used to. Has my engine gone bad? It runs fine and it doesn't smoke...its a Camry 2008. If there is no external oil leak go to a professional autodiagnotics centre for a leak down test or compression test ,this will reveal whether the oil leak is tru a worn piston ring or worn bad seal and the test will also check the integrity of the head gasket Job done. |

This is a very simple issue. Use a professional scanner (not all this toy scanner )to scan all electronic control modules that is on the car and any one you can not access is down ie if the ECU is not available to access then it is faulty. Cos if truly there is no check engine due to ECU issue then it must be offline . |

OriEyeLe: Good morning bosses in the house, I notice that my car is consuming more than what a normal Corolla should. I bought #1000 fuel when the gas sign came out on the dashboard and I only got 17miles on it judging by the time the gas sign came on again. I thought of opening the air filter housing and I found out that the air filter is torn and it was sew with wool, I never check the air filter housing ever since I got the car. Could this be the cause? 17 miles for 1k naira is around 27 km to 6.9litre of fuel (1k naira worth of fuel ) which equates to around 4km/litre mpg which is very bad .You car is drinking fuel like fish as your should should be close to 10km per litre. The effect that your sown air filter will contribute might be minor compared to the other issues your are yet to uncover . Your need to answer the following question . Does your fan come on as soon as your start the car ?,is your engine thermostat still intact? what is the level of your engine vibration(misfire) at idle (no vibration at all ,mild ,intense). Do you have wires flying around like cobwebs around your engine bay (kazeemisation ) What is the colour of your exhaust at high rev ?? Have your scanned the car before and what are the codes you have . Your car will need a professional touch !! |

keleto: Thanks. I did a scan before now. And it was shown ABS. The ABS LIGHT still showing up till now. But the electrician I took the car to said ABS showing up on the dashboard is not a problem. So do you thinks this problem with my car could be ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSOR. or I should do a scan again Do a scan again and try to fix the ABS issue .Scanning Camry 2000 ABS might require much more skill cos it is obd1 system ,your electrician might not be equiped to do better justice in diagnosing the ABS issue .Seek for a professional around your area that can fix this . |

before you start to buy any parts ,scan the car first and check for P500 codes and check for abs wheel speed sensor malfunction. Depending on the model of Camry ,some get their speedometer signal for abs sensor and some get theirs from the vss(vehicle speed sensor ) on the transmission .Find out which category your car belong to before swapping any sensor!!! |

20pence: Hello Gurus in the house.
My 1998 Toyota Camry has the ABS light on. I was able to manually get the code by jumping the DLC1 diagnostic connector. The code is 39 (Open Circuit - Left Rear Speed Sensor or Circuit).
I have changed the Left Rear ABS Sensor and cleared the code manually, but it comes right back with the same code. Has anyone handled this issue on this model before or you know the solution to it? Kindly share to assist a fellow in need.
Oga GAZZUZZ, Ikenna and other gurus in the house, please help! You don't take dtc code literally to avoid buying parts that is not defective ,it is good to try to understand how things works first before making decision on diagnosis !!! The ABS wheel sensor is not in isolation ,it is in a circuit that has connection to the ABS module and also the sensor is taking signal from a abs reluctor ring that Is attached to the driveshaft . So other things your need to check ; 1.wiring system integrity from abs wheel sensor to the ABS module , 2.ABS reluctor Ring on the driveshaft (also try to clean if it is dirty )!!! |

Whynow: I have been experiencing something strange on my 07 Lexus Rx350. From CEL caused by misfires codes jumping from 1 cylinder to 3 to 5 to 6 e.t.c. I have changed up to 4 coils in space of 1 month This morning cylinder 6 misfire popped up...... Not again I said. Now I no longer believe its my coils acting up, but something else triggers the misfires
Other observations Shakes whenever I start it in morning and smoothens Whenever i rev the car ver high, its shakes /shudders and shuts off. Trying to start it, it delays and cranks like i have a bad battery, which is not. Then I perceive a carbon like smell.
I have installed new sets of NGK bought from amazon. So not plugs.
My mechanic says probably a bad injector or a fuel supply issue
Please I need advise check the fuel pressure and intake leak detection test. stop throwing parts at problem ,go for diagnosis that will accurately pinpoint cause of the misfire |

AutoElectNG: Not all engines are built the same.
some are sludge prone, some are not.
I restate that engine used in that particular does not have a sludge problem such as certain Toyotas are known to have
I did not do any extra tests, but no smoking, no shorting of oil, no discernable problem from a similar engine same vehicle
certainly your experiences do not define the upper or lower limits of possible human experience
I would advise OP study this site and ask the overqualified fellow that runs it any questions that you may have https://540ratblog./
by the way someone close to me is not synonymous with customer, close in this instance, means pretty close, related by blood a vehicle that I had extended and extensive access to If you are open to the the challenge and like some adventures ,do you mind bringing this wonderful car to my workshop .I like experiment and knowledge ,i wont mind sparing some minute to see if it true there are some exception to the rules of lubrication(sludge prone or not ) , i will like to check up this car myself with my trusty diagnostics equipment to see if engine has not suffer any compression wear beyond reasonable threshold as you claim . |
Car Talk › Re: Advice Needed As Regards Engine Oil Change by honmusa(m): 9:42am On Jul 20, 2017*. Modified: 10:19am On Jul 20, 2017 |
AutoElectNG: Respectfully disagree.
That engine has no sludge problem.
change to 5w30 but carefully monitor oil consumption for the next 5,000 miles.
At every 500 miles interval, if that will determine if the decision is reasonable or not.
compare oil consumption with manufacturer specifications if within tolerances, continue using 5w30
shall I also add that someone close to me using the same engine switched from 20w50 to 5w30 after 5 years without issues to date some 4 years later I also respectively disagree about your statement about somebody using that crude and wrong oil for 5 years and switch to 5w30 without any issues.Let try to be objectives in our conclusion about issues not to cause confusion to people that come to the forum to learn and get educated .What scientific facts and figures did you come to arrive at such conclusion that the car is OK ?? cos in more than one decade of engineering practice I am yet to witness such miracle that prolong use of wrong oil left the engine unaffected .Is not about the negative effect that the switching to synthetic oil that matter but the irreparable damage the prolong use wrong oil have already cause that matter cos what is the use of beating a dead horse by using 5w30 oil to an already worn piston ring ,it just a waste of money !!! I will advice you not be be forming analysis based on customer perspective alone so as not be led astray . |

Alexgray: Well,it wasnt as if it was not also safe,it was also cheaper.i was using a 1996 toyota previa at that time.but let me just say i would recommend replacement in that case for 2000 models and above..how about that? Principle of cooling system remain the same regardless of car model .If the radiator is bad ,just replace it instead of taking the huge risk that can cost you another engine !!! Repairing a bad radiator seemly look cheaper in the beginning but much more expensive in the long run . |

Need advice if i can change the oil for the next service day or just continue with the (20w50). Thanks No way u will be using wrong oil like 20w50 for over 3 years and your piston rings and crankshaft main bearing won't have been affected (To confirm this ,go for compression leakage test to check your piston ring integrity ). ust continue using your 20w50 till your change to another engine . My car overheats at 70-80 km/h and each time I stop to check what was wrong with the cooling system I discovered that the coolant/water level is normal. If I allow the engine to cool down and continue at 50-60 km/h, the temperature will be normal. The engine thermostat is intact. I even changed the thermostat on my way back to check whether it is bad, it still did the same thing after about 20 km. Please what can I do to get the cooling system back to normal. ashiwajew: I bought this Kia Rio in January and it has been working perfectly not until water keeps drying off from the radiator in April, especially when I increase the AC to 2. To cut the long story short, on Sunday I tried to start it but didn't start but after so much attempt it started but with bad sound and vibration so I called a mechanic who says the coils and plugs are bad and that it's due for servicing. On Monday we headed for Ladipo, we bought everything we needed inclusive of new Mobil oil to service and after we administered all of these, it's still not starting in the process of recheck in one of the plugs he discovered stain of water on the plug and realized that the engine oil as turned milky then he said the gasket is damaged. Please could damaged gasket cause a car not to start and what other things should we look out for. Please any advise to prevent engine from being affected What actually prevent the car from starting is due to loss of compression due to head Gasket leak . You have leak in your cooling system but you ignored which eventually cause overheating that destroy your head gasket. After replacement of the head gasket ,you will still need to revisit the issue that is causing loss of coolant that damage the gasket if you don't want the repeat of this issue again . If you have the require fund ,just go for engine replacement and dont forget to go for cooling system pressure check after replacement. |

Remote fob is separate unit entire ,it is not the transponder .The transponder is a small chip package inside the key ,U will need to dismantle the key to see it. The essence of the chip is to produce the rolling pass code that the ECU will need to see before starting the car |
