Crime / Re: Driver Steals UNILAG Lecturer’s ATM Card, Withdraws N2.7m by horsepower24: 12:57am On Sep 11, 2016
seunoni34:
There is no software that can uncover an ATM Card PIN.
What might have happened was that the boss had given him the PIN at a time to help him make withdrawals.

Even if there was a software, what service will it connect to get the pin? Mastercard? Visa? Or where? Even your bank cannot know your pin because it's encrypted right in the card.
And it uses a one-way hash, like md5 (which can only be encrypted on input) and can never be decrypted back.

Moreso if he were to have made an online transaction where only the card CVV2 is required, the online merchant will still send the card owner a confirmation code by SMS of which he doesn't even have the owner's phone at hand.

Again If he's so smart to ever have such software it means he will have a direct connection to a private data storage of Mastercard , Visa and other card providers which in turn means he won't even need to steal cards to get money. !

There are one thousand and one smarter ways to steal electronically without getting caught, he just added that "software" line so everyone will think he's one kind of genius that needs to be explored.
Exactly. The story is definitely fake. How can one withdraw N2,000,000 in 2days via ATM when the maximum per day is N150,000?

If he was a computer whiz, why is he a driver? That story doesn't add up. Big men are used to giving their helps their ATM pin and card to withdraw on their behalf because of laziness.

I hope Nigerians would learn that issuing a dud cheque is a serious crime. Almost worse than spending fake currencies.

I think the topic is misleading. Remove Online or you would spoil market for some honest car dealers here on nairaland. People too should only pay after full inspection of the ride and agreements have been met by both parties

This report is true. I flew in to Enugu from Abuja on a business trip and there were pot holes on the runway. I and some other passengers on the flight were kinda scared but some folks who were used to plyin the route just laughed and said they were used to it.

They even call it an international airport.

Politics / Re: Evidence Against Saraki Burnt In GTBank - Witness by horsepower24: 8:33pm On Apr 20, 2016
missade:
There's sth fishy about the story. Even if there was a fire, surely there would be an electronic copy of the customer's request??!

But assuming there really was a fire and no electronic copy, there has to be telex generated for the transaction. That should suffice, it would show the routing bank and the final beneficiary bank as well as account number.

In short, the investigation is shoddy and tacky and that's how they will loose the case and blame it on SANS.

Exactly my point. This Wetkas guy is so lazy. SR would have done a better job. He would be so carefree with this case and make the EFCC lose if.
Politics / Re: Evidence Against Saraki Burnt In GTBank - Witness by horsepower24: 8:30pm On Apr 20, 2016
jydeskill1:
GTB is acting a script TELEX is generated electronically from SWIFT. The excuse is not tenable.
I think the fool here is the EFCC detective who cannot request for the electronic copy which is always sent when you make an FX transfer.

The bank showed him a police report on the fire incident that may or may not have burnt some of saraki's documents, but the lazy detective decided to stop there and not bother to even contact the beneficiary bank.

The way the EFCC is handling this case with such levity, one little detail they might overlook would make them lose this case.

When they talk about Nigerians doing exploits abroad we know they are talking about Igbos the most traveling tribe in Nigeria. Kenya never see something by the time we are through with them, they will beg whites to come take their lands again

There you go again. Chest beating. It shows you didn't read the article. The writer mentioned 'Nigerians in their agbadas'. Which obviously is not the igbos traditional attire.

Of course if you have a legitimate profitable business that is being managed by a trusted ally, why not. But I don't think using ur spare to run a profitable business will cut it. You resume work by 8am and close by 4-5pm, which spare time again, unless the business will be a professional Armed Robber, who operates only at night.

In the civil service act, as a civil servant, you are not allowed to run any business or be in the board of directors of any company. So there's no legitimate way

We must,on our own, learn to be security conscious with such...

...keeping ur atm card and the GTB registered sim in a safe and secured place is,in my opinion, the best solution cos the *737# platform is awesome smiley smiley

Exactly. The OP's friend was careless like the OP himself with his unguarded statements.
In modern age, there are different security methods in protecting your phone. Keeping bank alerts on your phone is also a security risk. Here in PH where kidnapping is the order of the day, once Kidnappers get their preys, they go through the msgs to check for bank alerts and probably access their victims.

People should be wise and security conscious and not bullshit an innovation that has saved life and reduced queues in banking halls

I expect a lawyer to have a good sense of comprehension. Saying my folk got scammed of 320k doesn't translate to being scammed via the *737# portal. As a lawyer, you shouldn't have concluded like that, won't insult you cos I believe you have learnt something from your mistake. I only brought that instance up to show y'all that the process of recovering stolen fund via fund transfer (whether *737# or others) even with the introduction of BVN isn't as easy and fast as they are presenting it. It is not just tasking but involves more spending, suspense, time consuming and tension between you, family and the bank. I'm speaking from experience here. Don't forget that the victim must continue to live, you know the rest. Peace

I think you have a communication problem. You mentioned the flaws in the *737 product and how your friend got scammed in one line without proper paragraphing. One would deduct the customer was scammed through that means.

Because of litigations, banks must follow due process and that's why they request for police reports and court orders in extreme cases. But naija wants quick solutions. These won't work where there are enough systems and controls to avoid fraud on people's account. How can money just jump from one account to another if the person has not compromised in giving his banking details to a fraudster.

Peace

Mayb u jst start using GTBanks, evry months charge of #65 to #100. Description of transaction different customers. If u dnt knw, go and make ya research, u're been charge monthly for transfer of funds frm other customers to ya account.. this is a copy of the last one deducted

Amt: NGN72.00 Dr
Desc: SI TRANSACTION (DIFFERENT CUSTOMERS)-GeNS CHARGE FOR 8MAR2016-05APR2016

Oga it is you that should ask questions. SI Transaction is for GeNS alert. That is SMS. Count how many transactions you did in a month and multiply it by N4. If you don't want that charge, deactivate your SMS alert and opt for the email alerts.
NB: I've been banking with them since 2002.

Calling Customer Care is faster than the thieves dialling *737# to enable a transfer? Let's be realistic here please, GTbank shouldn't have automatically placed all customers on the service and violating the rule of PIN is another issue. Those making suggestion about a police report and tracing the money are just learners. My folk got scammed of 320k at the beginning of last month and had done the police report/tracing stuffs yet we haven't heard anything from them till date. Imagine losing your life savings because of such security flaw and undergoing the rigorous task of recovering your money, who is going to be sustaining you while at it?

I like the Op cos he went further to suggest a solution to the flaws. GTBank should please do the needful and other banks trying to key into this innovation should build a better system for us. Surely, we will achieve a near perfect system in everything if we are open to good suggestions and can work towards achieving them. Shalom!
Bros. Lie small small. The highest transfer on that *737* is 100k daily.

I had a friend who was threatened to transfer money and he reported the case to the police got a police report and his funds were returned after the culprit was apprehended.

Police report is just for checks so that I don't come back and claim that a legitimate transfer between me and you was a fraud. How would you feel if someone you did a job for pays you after so much wahala and goes to the bank that he mistakenly transfers the money to you. And the bank reverses the transaction? Now the onus is on the police to ensure proper investigation is done before releasing such reports.

I am a lawyer and I av worked on some cases as this with banks and I have noticed that most times, customers lie.

Pls hw fast will d culprit be apprehended?. Also the CBN and all dose commercial banks are part of the pple scamming us, Instance is stamp duty charge on savings account and CBN said they dont charge stamp duty on savings account bt Stanbic IBTC and Access charge me, First bank, GTBank, Eco bank and some other banks deduct money frm customers account and while u complain, they dnt justify the integrity in d deduction of the money. What/How has CBN as the Apex bank incharge of activites performed by all these commercial banks has done to arrest those commercial banks on irregular deduction on customers accounts?.

I run a GTBank account too and I wonder what charges they deduct from your account that there is no justification for.

ATM and cell fone has been used by sum1 else how is d bvn suppose to detect DAT the transaction wasn't made by you.
That's where Police report comes to play. You report at the police station you were robbed and list your belongings that where stolen and take the report to your bank. Your bank would be obligated to initiate a transfer back to you or contact the fraud team of the other bank. And the culprit would be arrested.

A friend of mine was threatened by Kidnappers and they opted for bank transfer. He reported the case to the bank before the transfer. The bank blocked the criminal's account and when the criminal came to the bank to complain, he was picked up immediately by the police.
