PoliticsEx-bauchi Gov. Reacts, Says "I Spent Only N1.2bn Not N2.3bn On Funerals" by IamHeWrites(op): 10:49am On Jun 27, 2019
Former Governor of Bauchi State, Mohammed Abubakar, has said that he only spent N1.2 billion on funeral materials and not N2.3 billion as alleged by his successor, Igbere TV reports.

Recall that Governor Bala Mohammed had accused Mr Abubakar of spending N2.3 billion on funeral materials in five months.

Abubakar, through his media aide, Mukhtar Jibril, said he inherited the practice of buying funeral materials from his predecessors due to its impact on the people.

“In response to media reports on the issue of mahogany and shrouds procured for burials, we want to state that this is a practice inherited by the government of Abubakar from its predecessors. Considering its significance and impact on the people, especially the bereaved, it decided to continue with it.

“However, the project, like any other of the same magnitude, was awarded to qualified contractors. Based on the available verifiable record, N1,270,743,520 had been expended since its inception and not the exaggerated figure of N2.3 billion mischievously posted on the social media by critics,” Mr Jibril said.

He added that the purchases were not arbitrary but passed through due process.

“Besides, every contract awarded was subjected to the scrutiny and appraisal of the due process agency in accordance with public procurement law, contract agreement, payment of tax due on such contracts and other requirements.

“We urge the good people of the state to disregard this insinuation and act of desperation by elements of retrogression,” he said.

BusinessTwo Oando Directors Resign As Crisis Deepens by IamHeWrites(op): 2:43pm On Jun 07, 2019
Oando Plc has notified the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), its shareholders, stakeholders and members of the public of the resignation of two non-executive directors, Sena Anthony and Oghogho Akpata, from its board, Igbere TV reports.

Their resignation according to what Igbere Tv learnt, comes amidst clampdown on the company by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

According to a statement on NSE website, their resignation became effective from June 3.

“Chief Sena Anthony and Mr. Oghogho Akpata were active members of the board and its sub-committees. The board and management of Oando Plc appreciates their valuable contributions to the growth of the company,” Oando said in the three-paragraph statement.

SEC had last Friday announced the removal of the company’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Wale Tinubu, and his deputy, Omamofe Boyo.

It also barred them from holding director positions in public companies for a minimum of five years.

After sacking Messrs Tinubu and Boyo, SEC set up an interim management to be headed by Mutiu Sunmonu.
The commission said the management would oversee the affairs of Oando Plc and conduct an Extra Ordinary General Meeting on or before July 1, 2019.

However, Tinubu and Boyo have secured a court order asking all parties to maintain status quo.

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos ordered SEC and Mr Sunmonu to maintain status quo pending determination of the motion on notice.

She also ordered that the order be served on the commission along with the motion on notice, and other processes.

PoliticsFG Releases New Age Classification, 15-year-old Now To Be Regarded As A Youth by IamHeWrites(op): 4:16am On May 29, 2019
The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has released a new age classification in Nigeria, Igbere TV reports.

At the launch of the Revised National Youth Policy, 2019 which took place in Akure, Ondo State on May 24th, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, in a foreword presented at the launch, disclosed that the age bracket for the classification of youth in Nigeria has been reviewed downward from 18 – 35 years to 15 – 29 years.

Dalung in his foreword, stated that the age classification had to be reviewed downward so that every federal government intervention programmes designed for youths will get to the youths themselves and not adults masquerading as youth.

According to the Minimum Age Convention (1973), the general minimum age for admission to employment or work in Nigeria is 15 years. The United Nations defines ‘youth’ as persons between the ages of 15 and 24 years, Igbere TV reports.

PoliticsGroup Commends Buhari For Signing Minimum Wage Bill by IamHeWrites(op): 3:14pm On Apr 19, 2019
The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the N30,000 new minimum wage bill into law.

NAUS Deputy Secretary-General, Comrade Isioma Ogochukwu, gave the commendation in a statement made available to PM News on Friday in Lagos.

PM News recalls that Buhari on Thursday signed the Minimum Wage Repeal and Re-Enactment Act, 2019 into law; by this act, the least paid worker in the country will now receive N30,000 monthly.

Ogochukwu noted that NAUS saw the signing as a long awaited gesture to workers in Nigeria to enjoy the fruit of their labour, considering what is obtainable in other African countries and the world at large.

He expressed hope that state governors would not hesitate to pay the new wage to their workers, since it was a collective agreement.

He also commended the national leadership of organised labour for their doggedness throughout the negotiation for the new national minimum wage.

The NAUS scribe stressed the need to continue the fight especially at the states level, to ensure that all governors comply with the new law.

He, however, appealed to state governors to strictly adhere with the new minimum wage by prompt payment of workers’ salaries in their various states, adding that the association will not hesitate to mobilize against states who fail to do so.

“The National Association of University Students wish to commend President Buhari for attending to the National Minimum Wage Bill as sent by the National Assembly.

“It shows that he cares for the welfare of the masses and working class in particular. We believe that the implementation date will be the date of assent.

“It is also important to remind ourselves that the N30,000 minimum wage remains insufficient for workers when we consider the inflation rate in our country and the prevailing economic realities.

“However, we must appreciate the sincerity of the president in ensuring that the new minimum wage becomes implemented, which of course will have direct impact on us as students since most of our parents are workers,” Ogochukwu said.

The Senate had on March 19, approved N30,000 as the new national minimum wage proposed by the tripartite committee set up by the president.

The approved new wage was achieved after more than a year negotiation by the tripartite committee in addition to protest and strike by the organised labour.

Federal Government last reviewed its National Minimum wages in 2011 during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Crime8 Nigerian Robbers Sentenced To Death In UAE by IamHeWrites(op): 5:14am On Apr 19, 2019
Eight Nigerian men have been sentenced to death in United Arab Emirates (UAE) for robbery, Igbere TV can report.

They were convicted for robbing money exchanges and cash machines (ATMs) across the country in December 2016.

A ninth Nigerian was found innocent. He was, however, sentenced to six months imprisonment for being in possession of stolen monies.

Igbere TV gathered reliably that he will be deported shortly after serving his jail term.

It was gathered that a total of 20 suspects were initially held for attacking security guards in four violent attacks at ATMs and money exchanges across UAE in late 2016. Out of 20 suspects, only nine were convicted.

Some of the accused confessed to their crimes while others denied the charges levelled against them.

The eight-member gang were said to have attacked security trucks and entered establishments by force and threatened and assaulted staff and members of the public with bladed weapons in a spate of robberies, three of which were carried out on the same day on December 18, 2016.

The gang — who were all in the UAE on visit visas — were said to be highly organised and plotted a string of orchestrated attacks to ambush security trucks that were transporting money boxes to and from ATMs, and at least one money exchange in Sharjah.

The first robbery took place at a Dubai Commercial Bank ATM on King Abdul Aziz Street where Dh340,000 was stolen. Then two days later they attacked an ATM in Al Safeer Mall in Al Nahda fleeing with Dh700,000, and an ATM in Muweilah where they stole Dh710,000. A fourth attack at a money exchange office near National Paints was foiled by police.

The gang of 20 were arrested in record time but police confirmed that only a portion of the stolen money — almost Dh1.8 million — had been recovered, as the gang members had divided the money among themselves and transferred it to their home country.

A prosecutor told newsmen on Thursday that as per the law, a group of people who threaten the life of others while committing robbery are subject to the death sentence, however an appeal is expected to be launched and the sentences could get downgraded to life imprisonment.

The trial appears unconnected with the arrest of five Nigerians in March this year, who robbed a Bureau de Change operator of Dh2.3 million (N225.4 million) in Sharjai, Dubai.

The suspects were identified as Chimuanya Emmanuel Ozoh, Benjamin Nwachukwu Ajah, Kingsley Ikenna Ngoka, Tochukwu Leonard Alisi and Chile Micah Ndunagu.

The five Nigerians reportedly barged into the BDC on March 20 and smashed the glass barrier between the customers and the staff, stole the money in multiple currencies and fled.

A top police official said the suspects came to the UAE on visit visas on March 18.

This comes on the heels of the execution of another Nigerian lady over drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia. 23 others are on death roll in the Arab country for drug related offences.

PoliticsAnger Over Obaseki’s N76 Billion Debt Increment In Two Years by IamHeWrites(op):
Edo people were last week dumbfounded to read revelations by the Debt Management Office (DMO) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) that the debt profile of Edo State has increased by about N76 billion in two years that Governor Obaseki has saddled the affairs of the state.

The new debt profile has placed Edo as second most indebted state in foreign debt behind Lagos and overtaking Kaduna.

Before the release of this statistics, Governor Obaseki was viewed as highly prudent and reports had it that he was busy offsetting the debts of the previous administrations.

The new debt profile has however sold his administration out as the opposite and if allowed to continue at this rate is projected to incur an estimated N150 Billion debt in his first term.

Economic and political observers are still at lost as to what the Governor spent the monies on as there is nothing on ground in Edo State to justify the amounts incurred as debts considering the fact that Edo State received several trenches of payments of the Paris Club refunds running into tens of billions of naira, monthly Federal Allocation, Internally Generated Revenues as well as monthly security votes which is unaccounted for by the governor amongst other earnings.

Governor Obaseki has been criticized as “stingy” by his party men who accused him of dumping them after his victory in 2016 and filling his kitchen cabinets with his imported Lagos friends and cronies and children of elites.

He is also accused of surrounding himself and awarding juicy contracts to his fellow elites who party members describe as “already rich” and relegating APC members including appointees to the background, a scenario which fueled speculations that the Ambode treatment will be meted on the governor.

Also the governor is reportedly having a strained relationship with his predecessor who was the former governor of Edo State and present National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Cold War between the duo was reported to have started in the struggle for control of the party structure during the Congress and Primaries which held in 2018.

Obaseki, who is an economic expert, was planted by his predecessor against bitter internal and external party opposition to amongst other reasons, manage the debt profile of Edo State by making deliberate efforts to reduce it. This new discovery that the debt profile of Edo State has increased astronomically is projected to pave a new view of the governor and will definitely determine the outcome of who flys the APC flag for Edo in year 2020.

PoliticsRe: SARS Killings: No More Use Of Gun During Operations – Police IG by IamHeWrites(op): 11:31am On Apr 16, 2019
Modified

TASER is a swift electric rifle handheld device that incapacitates a person by transmitting a 50,000-volt electric shock. The Taser fires two small darts, connected to the device with thin wires, up to a distance of approximately 11 metres (35 feet). The darts can penetrate clothing and, once they make contact with the target, deliver the electric shock, which disrupts the target’s nervous system, resulting in temporary incapacitation. The Taser is not considered a firearm, because it uses compressed nitrogen to launch the darts. A Taser can also be used as a stun gun by pressing it directly against the target’s body, thereby administering the electric shock.

IamHeWrites:
The Nigerian Police says its men will no longer be allowed to carry firearms during operations.

Instead, officers of the Police Force will now make use of electro-muscular disruption technology known as teaser in place of firearms.

The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Muhammad Adamu disclosed this while addressing men and women of the Nigerian Police Force at the Police College parade ground, Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday.

Adamu said the use of the teaser otherwise known as rubber bullet will be used by the routine patrols, arrest duties and other low-risk operations “as strategic approach towards reducing incidents of fatalities associated with misappropriation of lethal weapons by the Police as first line of response to any threat.”

He was reacting to the spate of extra judicial killings by some policemen in recent weeks.

IGBERE TV recalls that a 20-year-old Ms. Joy Ifeanyi was shot dead by men of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) on Saturday in Lagos. This comes less than two weeks after 36-year-old Kolade Johnson was murdered in cold blood by SARS operatives at a football viewing centre in Lagos.

According to the IGP, between January to April, 2019 “Lagos State has recorded four incidents of misuse of firearms which have resulted in extrajudicial killings of young citizens of this country and injury to others.”

“Its more worrisome that two of these incidents occurred within the last two weeks. Aside negating our professional calling, extrajudicial acts of any description or level by any police personnel is an unacceptable anomaly that creates distrust and disdain between the citizens and the police and widens the trust gap between them.

“In perfecting these initiatives, we shall be engaging with Human Rights Bodies, International Agencies Development partners and Civil Society Organisations.

“This is with a view to evolving a united front towards addressing these challenges on a sustainable basis and within the context of best international practices.”

Adamu further stated the Force will no longer tolerate the senseless killings carried out by some of its officers around the country.

“I must emphasise that enough is enough. The nation and indeed the Police under the current leadership can no longer tolerate abuses associated with the Police either in Lagos or any other part of the country.

“I have already ordered that a signal be circulated to all Police Commands and Formations warning of dire consequences against any personnel that by their incorrigible acts deviates from accepted Police culture and values.”

While warning the officers, Adamu added: “The choice now is for each officer to either resolve to perform his or her duties within extant rules, laws and policies or be prepared to be shown the way out of the system.

“Our visit to Lagos is also designed to condone with the families of the victims of the recent incidents of misuse of firearms or other forms of abuse of power by identified police personnel in the State and to share in their grief.

“It is also to reassure citizens that as an institution, the Nigeria Police will not condone any form of abuse of power, acts resulting in misuse of firearms, overzealous and sundry unprofessional conducts by members of the police regardless of his rank and position.”
