Scores of customers of Polaris Bank in Osogbo, the state capital of Osun, on Monday lamented the ugly experience they had as men of Nigeria Police Force (NFP) closed all the branches of the commercial bank in the state capital following a court order, Igbere TV reports. According to Igbere TV correspondent in Osun state, Ayobami Sodiq, who visited the three branches ((Fagbewesa, Alekuwodo and Gbongan Road) of the bank in Osogbo on Monday one after the other, customers were seeing hanging around the areas of the branches as they were denied access into the bank. Only the Automated Teller Machines (ATM) were working. The three branches of the bank within the metropolis did not open for business. The ugly development left many of the customers stranded especially some retirees who were in the bank to access their account, most of them who doesn’t have a debit card expressed worry over the event while some others who wanted to send money to another branch outside the state capital were helpless. One of the customers that spoke with Igbere TV, Mr Babatunde Samuel, said that they were locked up in the bank initially for three hours before being sent out without any opportunity to do any transaction. While expressing his agony, he said, “As it is now, I am extremely stranded. I came from Offa, Kwara State with the hope of withdrawing money. I don’t have up to a litre of Petrol in my car and I don’t know how I am going to leave Osogbo at the moment because their ATM is not also dispensing” Effort to get the reaction of the police officers who came to effect the order was unsuccessful. However, Igbere TV, contacted a senior staff of the bank outside the state, who under anonymity gave full insight into the issue. He said, “On the 12th of July 2019, the Osun state High Court, Ikire judicial Division made an order absolute against the Bank in respect of the account of Gabriel Omeka Omeka (the customer). The money being claims be in the customer’s account against which the court made the garnishee order is a purported balance of $1.1m US Dollars. The judgment being enforced through the garnishee proceeding is not a judgment against the Bank as the Bank does not have any relationship with any of the primary parties in the matter. The customer whose account is being garnisheed is a co-garnishee in the matter and not a judgment debtor” “The judgment debtor in the matter does not have any account with the bank. The purported balance in the account of the customer which the court attached in the garnishee proceeding and directed the bank to pay within 3 days arose when there was a cyber-attack on the bank’s system and some fraudsters hacked into the bank system and inflated balances of certain accounts of which the account in question is one” “When the order nisi was served on the Bank, we disclosed to the court that the customer account was used to perpetrate fraud against the bank and this fraud led to the inflated balance of $1.1m which the Bank has reported to the Police and same is under investigation. We informed the court and exhibited documents that such balances do not exist as the customer never made such deposits with the Bank and that the balance in the customer’s account are not bad by any underlying transaction. Despite this, the Court went ahead and made the order absolute against the Bank. Immediately the order was made absolute against the bank, we filed a notice of appeal and application for an injunction against the order and same was served. But despite this, the court levied execution against the Bank today while our application is still pending” While reacting to the issue, the Public Relations Officer of Osun State Police Command, Mrs. Folashade Odoro, said since it is a court order, it is the duty of the police to ensure that the order is enforced with it. Former chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has mocked the police for summoning singer, Timi Dakolo, and wife, Busola, to answer to cases of criminal conspiracy, falsehood and mischief, Igbere TV reports. Timi had on Saturday revealed via Instagram that he and his wife have been summoned to Abuja by the police over rape allegations made against Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA). In the invitation letter dated Thursday, July 18, the police say they are investigating a case of criminal conspiracy, falsehood and mischief. Odinkalu, tweeted on Saturday, saying that the police had ‘all of a sudden’ established ‘nonexistent crimes’ against the Dakolo family. “So all of a sudden @policeNG has case of “falsehood, mischief…”, nonexistent crimes, against @timidakolo?” he said. Timi Dakolo had said that his family would not be bullied. The 38-year-old had raised an alarm over the presence of unidentified “strange men” at his Lagos home earlier on Saturday. A picture he posted on Instagram showed that the men allegedly came in a van with number plate BR932KSF. After their exit, he shared a video to confirm the safety of himself and his family. Busola had last month alleged that Fatoyinbo raped her as a teenager in Ilorin, Kwara State. Fatoyinbo was forced to step down from publicly overseeing COZA because of the allegations against him. Former minister of communications, Adebayo Shittu, has said that he listened to his counsel’s advice in withdrawing his suit against the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Supreme Court, Igbere TV reports. Justice John Okoro of the Supreme Court had on Thursday dismissed Shittu’s case having been withdrawn by him. APC had prevented Shittu from participating in its primary election because he skipped the mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) after his graduation from the Obafemi Awolowo University in 1978. Shittu sued the party, seeking redress for allegedly being denied participation in the governorship primary election in Oyo State. The former minister told newsmen on Friday that he listened to the advice of his counsel who made reference to the decision of the Court of Appeal in the case of Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State. “When the appeal came up before the Supreme Court on Thursday, and before same could be heard, my counsel stood up and voluntarily withdrew the appeal,” Shittu said. “It must be noted that the dismissal of the suit was based on the application of my counsel and same was not predicated on the decision of the case on the merits.” He said that the Appeal Court held that the possession or non-possession of an NYSC discharge or exemption certificate was not a prerequisite for contesting elections in Nigeria. “Therefore, the Appeal Court has already laid the issue to rest effectively and there is, therefore, no need to flog a dead horse,” the former minister said. Igbere TV just obtained the photos of a gallant Nigerian soldier who was among other soldiers that were killed by Boko Haram terrorists in the recent line of battle. According to reports gathered by Igbere TV, Abdulazeez Mohammed who happens to be a Captain lost his life in recent ambush by Boko Haram in Borno state. It was earlier reported on Thursday that six gallant soldiers were killed in an ambush by rebel fighters in northeast Nigeria's Borno state. According to the reports, heavily armed fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) group on Wednesday, opened fire on a patrol vehicle of soldiers who were on their way to Maiduguri from Damaturu, the capital of neighbouring Yobe state, when the rebels attacked them around 16:20 GMT, near Jakana, 30km from the state capital Maiduguri, killing all the soldiers on board. The attack was repelled by soldiers at the base, with ISWAP fighters abandoning weapons and one vehicle as they fled. Igbere TV gathers that the attacks came hours after a military chief in the northeast warned "terrorists" in the region to disarm or be destroyed. The Nigerian army has channeled a great deal of its resources to ensure that the war against Boko Haram ends. So many soldiers and civilians have been lost within the course of the war and the battle is beginning to seem like one which will end in a Pyrrhic victory for the nation. Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has said that the state lost its legacy of cleanliness during the administration of Rochas Okorocha, Igbere TV reports. Igbere TV reports that Mr Ihedioha said this on Wednesday during the inauguration of the committee on monthly clean-up headed by former governor of the state, Ikedi Ohakim, at Government House, Owerri. The 10-man committee includes all the heads of security agencies in the state; tertiary institutions; Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN); Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC); Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) among others. “I want to thank all, particularly Sir Ikedi Ohakim, who has kept fate with the vision of this administration to make Imo a cleaner state. The monthly cleanup programme commences from July. “You recall that in 2008, 2009 and 2010, Imo won the cleanest prize in the federation. The prize was stated by the Federal Ministry of Environment. Thereafter, we lost that legacy in the last eight years,” Ihedioha said. Mr Ohakim said his appointment as chairman of the committee was because the state was awarded the cleanest state in the country by the Federal Ministry of Environment three consecutive times under his watch. “What you have done today is a revolution. 75 per cent of human behaviour, according to a psychologist, is controlled by the environment. “If you have a beautiful environment, your behaviour will be beautiful. If you have a dirty environment, all you do will be dirty,” Ohakim said. “Imo women will love you more because what you are doing today will make their husbands very healthy. Your children will be healthy; they will not have malaria and their husbands will perform their duties.” Source; http://igberetvnews.com/831085/just-in-imo-lost-cleanliness-under-okorocha-governor-ihedioha/ Lalasticlala Mynd44 Dominique

Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, has called on all Nigerians to disseminate information responsibly to curb the menace of hate speech, fake news, and its resultant effects, Igbere TV reports. Kukah said this on Tuesday at a colloquium with the theme ‘Fake News and Hate Speech’ held at the National Open University of Nigeria, Abuja. Kukah, a lead discussant at the Colloquium, described fake news “as multi-layers of conversations which are feeding off of our already existing prejudices”, urging every Nigerian to become information gatekeepers. He said: “People in a society live by comparing their conditions with those of others. When they perceive that others are benefiting better than them, the assumption is that they are worse off thereby, setting the society on an endless antagonism. “In a state of war, war strategists actually say that disinformation is a legitimate tool of war.” Kukah advised the public, particularly media practitioners to avoid any reportage that ‘distracts’ and misleads the society. “These are not easy times we are in; there are information out there with intent to distract but we must be more discerning. “We can banish hate speech by presenting the ordinary citizens with an alternative narrative,” he said. The keynote speaker, Chief Executive of Newswatch Now, Ray Epku said some key ingredients that fuel hate speech are religion, politics, and ethnicity. “It is obvious that fake news published either by digital or mainstream media can lead to hate speech; hate speech can lead to violence or discrimination and hostility,” he said. Other discussants were Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, Reuben Abati, Funke Egbemode, Senator Chris Anyawu, and Mahmud Jega.
