PoliticsEFCC Arrests Joseph Oyediran, Suspected Wanted By FBI (photos) by IamHeWrites(op): 4:34pm On Aug 30, 2019
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has arrested Joseph Oyediran who is wanted by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over internet fraud.

Head of EFCC Ilorin zonal office, Isyaku Sharu, said at a press conference on Friday that Mr Oyediran was arrested in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.

The arrest, he said, was part of EFCC/FBI collaboration against internet fraud.

“Three weeks ago, the US authority had written to us for assistance in tracking as well as possible arrest and prosecution of two most wanted FBI suspects in Nigeria,” Mr Sharu said.

Leakers.ng reports that FBI had launched a clampdown on internet fraudsters since the arrest of the founder of Invictus Group, Obinwanne Okeke, over conspiracy to commit fraud of about $12 million.

Acting chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, said the collaboration between the commission and the FBI has led to the recovery of the sums of $314,000 and about N373 million from perpetrators of computer-related fraud known locally as ‘Yahoo Yahoo’.

CrimeNigerians Indicted As US Charges 80 For Fraud, Money Laundering by IamHeWrites(op): 6:43pm On Aug 22, 2019
Authorities in the United States have unsealed a 252-count grand jury indictment charging 80 people with participating in a conspiracy to steal millions of dollars through a range of fraud schemes and laundering the funds through a Los Angeles-based network.

The US Attorney’s Office says Thursday most of the defendants are Nigerian citizens.

FoxMeek gathers that fourteen defendants have been arrested, mostly in the Los Angeles region. Six others are believed to be fugitives in the US and the others are abroad, mostly in Nigeria.

Prosecutors say the schemes included frauds involving compromise of business email, romance scams and schemes targeting the elderly.

Authorities say the schemes targeted victims in the US and around the world, and some lost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

US President, Donald Trump has toughened visa issuance to Nigeria and other countries whose citizens have a track record of crime and overstaying beyond the validity of their short-term visas.

FoxMeek recalls that last month, it announced visa restrictions on those involved in undermining Nigeria’s presidential and parliamentary elections in May.

Mr Trump is also accused of referring to Nigeria and others as shithole countries during a meeting with lawmakers in the Oval Office in January 2018.

PoliticsAbba Kyari Under Fire Over New Role From Buhari by IamHeWrites(op): 11:45am On Aug 21, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari and his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari have come under fire following a directive by the President to Ministers-designate, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV had reported that President Buhari on Tuesday, directed the incoming Ministers to channel all requests for meetings with him through Mr Kyari.

Buhari gave the directive at the end of the two-day special retreat for Ministers-designate and other top government functionaries at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday.

“In terms of coordination, kindly ensure that all submissions for my attention or meeting requests be channelled through the Chief of Staff (CoS), while all Federal Executive Council matters be coordinated through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF),” Buhari had said.

Nigerians have taken to Twitter to comment on the issue, with many taking a swipe at the President and describing him as a ‘TV', with Kyari as the ‘Remote’ control.

This is even as some have put up some meme describing the CoS as Nigeria's ‘de-facto president’, and vice president Yemi Osinbajo as Buhari’s ‘Special Adviser on TraderMoni.’

PoliticsEl-zakzaky Attempted To Seek Asylum In India – FG by IamHeWrites(op): 6:06pm On Aug 16, 2019
The Federal Government has alleged that the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, tried to seek asylum while in India for medical treatment.

The government said this on Friday in a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Grace Gekpe.

El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenah, returned to the country around noon on Friday and landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Igbere TV reports.

The Federal Government said El-Zakzaky exhibited acts of misconduct which necessitated his repatriation.

“With total disrespect and complete loss of decorum for international procedures while in India, he initiated contacts with a team of lawyers led by Ali Zia Kabir Chaudary and Gunjan Singh in that country,” the statement began.

“He also contacted some Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), such as the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) and other Shiite groups. His aim was to seek asylum and eventually relocate to another country.

“It is important to note that if an Indian court had granted El-zakzaky asylum or leave to travel to another country, it would have violated the Nigerian court order that granted him permission to travel for medical treatment.

“However, he used the opportunity of being in India to attempt to internationalise his cause by mobilising the Rights groups. Even most unfortunate and rather embarrassing as earlier stated, was his quest to be relocated to a 5-Star hotel to receive visitors instead of being admitted in the hospital as a sick person he claimed to be.

“In spite of his misconduct, El-zakzaky’s spouse went further to antagonize the Indian and Nigerian security agents and accused the latter of killing her children. These acts were aimed at winning international sympathy as well as disparaging the Nigerian Government. Having subordinated the quest for medical treatment to other ulterior motives, it became obvious that El-zakzaky was focused on realising some sinister motives thus the decision to return him to Nigeria,” the statement said.

El-Zakzaky and wife are now being held by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The IMN says the Federal Government tried to kill its leader in India.

CrimePolice, Family Clash Over Woman’s Disappearance During Road Walk by IamHeWrites(op): 12:07pm On Jul 30, 2019
Police in Lagos and the family of a 24-year-old woman Gbemisola Alabi have clashed over her disappearance.

Alabi went missing on Sunday in Ajah area of Lagos while jogging.

Her family said she was kidnapped while jogging around Monastery Road, near Novare Mall in Shongotedo, Ajah, Igbere TV reports.

The police, however, said they were investigating a case of missing person, contrasting with the family’s opinion of kidnap.

A syndicated WhatsApp message was dispersed on Monday appealing to Nigerians to assist with useful information on her whereabouts.

The message read: “Dear friends and Nigerians, the above photo is of our beloved daughter, sister, wife and mother – Gbemisola Alabi. She was kidnapped around Monastery road near Novare mall – Shoprite Shongotedo Ajah yesterday (28th July, 2019) while she went jogging.

“We need your help to find her. Please help share her photo on all your social media handles, put a call through to people you feel can help us. Call the Ajah police command if you have any information or call Mr. Adebayo 0802 999 8831 representing the family. Anything you can do please. We also need your prayers that she returns home to her family soon and in good health.”

However, Lagos police spokesman, Bala Elkana said: “It will be wrong to say she was kidnapped. At the moment, no one has come forward to say they have her in their custody not made demands to that effect. She left the house to jog which is her normal routine but this time around, she didn’t come back.

“No one knows for sure what happened to her. It is true the family said they were suspecting the landlady and her son and we have invited them. Investigation is ongoing to unravel what happened to her and where she is.”

PoliticsSP Lawan Thanks Senators For ‘sacrifice’ Made In Ministerial Screening by IamHeWrites(op): 1:11pm On Jul 27, 2019
Senate President Ahmad Lawan has thanked his colleagues for the sacrifices they have put in in ensuring that the screening of ministerial nominees is completely quickly.

Igbere TV reports that the screening of ministerial nominees began on Wednesday and will continue on Monday, July 29.

In a tweet on Saturday, the Senate President said in his 20 years in the parliament, he had not seen lawmakers sit all day to perform their duties, Igbere TV reports.

“Since my twenty years in the parliament, I have never witnessed such an unusual situation where Senators will seat a day-long to perform their legislative duties, screening ministers. I want to thank my colleagues for the immense sacrifice they made in this regard,” he said.

The Senate has, however, come under criticism for its ‘take a bow’ tradition which allows nominees to leave without being questioned.

The term ‘take a bow’ is reserved for nominees who are former members of the National Assembly, allowing them to simply bow before the lawmakers and leave without being questioned.

Lawan has also extended the privilege to former members of state assemblies and women.

PoliticsNYSC Has Given Credibility To Nigeria’s Elections — Gowon by IamHeWrites(op): 12:15pm On Jul 26, 2019
Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, said on Wednesday that collaboration between the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given credibility to Nigeria’s elections, Igbere TV reports.

Gowon made this assertion in an address delivered on his behalf by General Ahmadu Ali, pioneer director-general of the scheme, at a sensitisation workshop on the National Youth Service Corps Act, CAP. N84 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, Igbere TV reports.

While listing the achievements of the scheme, the former head of state said its “collaboration with INEC has given credibility to our elections.”

Some other achievements of the NYSC, according to Gowon, include: “National unity has been achieved by the deployment of corps participants to states other than their states of origin;

“The scheme has contributed to so much in the educational development of the country;

“In the health sector, the contributions of the scheme to our health care delivery cannot be quantified;

“The scheme is involved in Legal Aid work, rendering pro bono Legal services to the indigent members of the society.”

Gowon said though the original enabling statute was repealed by Decree 51 of June 16, 1993, which is now National Youth Service Corps Act CAP. N84, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, “the objectives of the Act have remained constant and very relevant to the contemporary challenges of our dear nation Nigeria.”

According to him, the establishment of the scheme was not misplaced.

He said: “I am very proud to note that the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps in 1973 by my administration was not misplaced, judging from the laudable achievements of the scheme.”

Meanwhile, Ali, while giving his personal remarks before presenting General Gowon’s address, called for the expansion of the scheme beyond the shores of Nigeria.

He said the time has come for the NYSC programme to be expanded to other African Union countries.

The ex-DG advised professional bodies against making requests for deployment to specific areas.

Also speaking during the opening ceremony of the sensitization workshop, the DG, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, said “given the current realities of the continuing relevance of the NYSC, we have recognized the need to provide avenue for enlightenment of Nigerians on the enabling Act and the various aspects of our operations. This is based on our firm belief that the roles of stakeholders are better played if the provisions of the enabling law are clearly understood.”

The DG, however, advised professional bodies who request for corps members for specific areas to desist.

Ibrahim said: “I consider it appropriate to remind professional bodies who have been inundating us with requests for posting of Corps members to specific areas of endeavours for Primary Assignment that such requests are not in tandem with the provisions of the NYSC Act from which our posting policy is derived.

“For the avoidance of doubt, corps members are assigned to serve in areas where their services are required in line with national needs, with priority given to rural transformation.”

The DG, therefore, urged Nigerians “to familiarise themselves with the NYSC Act for better understanding of the policies and operations of the Scheme.”

A minute’s silence was observed in the course of the programme for Precious Owolabi, a corps member serving with Channels TV.

Owolabi was killed during this week’s clash between members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and the police in Abuja.

Igbere TV gathers that Aliyu was on his way home when he was hit at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja.

PoliticsBuhari To Split Ministry Of Power, Works And Housing To Two by IamHeWrites(op): 1:20pm On Jul 23, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has concluded plans to split the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to two, Igbere TV has learned.

This follows the emergence of former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, as ministerial-nominee.

Igbere TV reports that Buhari had merged three federal ministries in 2015 to form the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing in what was seen as a cost-saving move by the president who came to power promising better management of resources.

Former Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, was appointed minister in November 2015.

The experiment, however, proved to be a failure with Fashola unable to effectively supervise three of the most critical sectors of the Nigerian economy.

A source close to the Presidency has now told Igbere Tv that Aregbesola’s appointment may see the unbundling of the ministry.

“With Engr. Rauf Aregbesola on the list, there is every likelihood that the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing may be split to Ministry of Power and Ministry of Works and Housing,” the source who craved anonymity told this online newspaper on Tuesday shortly after Buhari’s ministerial list was made public.

Fashola, who is returning as minister, is expected to supervise the power ministry, while Aregbesola will be in charge of works and housing.

Before contesting the Osun governorship election in 2007, Aregbesola was Lagos State commissioner for works and infrastructure.

He served for two terms under then-Governor Bola Tinubu, who is now the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
