Funlord2: Ibime I think this assessment of redondo and makalele is spot on! I saw them both play in their primes! Redondo would be the more complete player of the 2( as regards to technique, dribbling skills and all round contribution to the teams cause) but defensively makalele was excellent more supreme but technically limited! Both men were 2 different types of midfield generals..
Fact! Makelele was far from technically limited, and if you think so, go and ask Sir Alex why he manmarked Makelele every game. Have you seen technically limited defensive midfielder being manmarked before? I bet you don't know that Makelele once took his team to UCL semifinal as an AM. Tell me which season, let's test your memory. |

Griffon: I didn't see most of these 'deep lying playmaking' from Maka at Chelsea. All I saw was a man who knew exactly how to screen the backline. All I saw was a ' “ferocious midfield terrier'.
I have always been of the opinion that his skillsets were limited. He never had the best of visions, was never fast and hardly scored goals.
I love the man for real, he is a legend but then again, Redondo struck that balance for me, albeit he wasn't as ferocious as Maka. You were aged 11 to 16 when Maka was at Chelsea. Your eye never mature. I insist there is no manager in football that will pick Redondo over Makelele for his DM. What Redondo does best, Maka is also good at it. But when it comes to defending, they are as different as Barcelona and TP Mazembe. |

Griffon: If the debate is the primary task of a DM, then Maka is an improvement on Redondo.
As for over-all play and skill-set, Redondo na Makalele big brother. Maka is not what you think he is. Maka was a deep lying playmaker, that just knew how to defend. I was at Emirates Cup in 2009 or so, PSG Vs Valencia if I remember right, when Maka came on in 2nd half. Oh what passing and control he brought to the game, the game changed immediately. There is a reason Sir Alex and other top managers used to get their no10 to manmark Makelele, and that's because he was an extraordinary playmaker. That was Rooneys job anytime we played Manure. Redondo no senior am for anything. Stop this nonsense. |

afrodoc2: Kroos has great talent but he never takes control, too docile. Never the boss always the accomplice. Redondo above him, people like Kroos should thank their eleda for Ronaldo. I think that's just the setup at Madrid. Kroos receives first and Modric does the carrying. Kroos is a different player for Germany. Where I'm disappointed is he has stopped running hard since going to Madrid. He now runs barely over 10km per game which indicates he is just cruising. However Redondo was also weak in that physical aspect, even weaker sef so Kroos still ahead for me. |

afrodoc2: Yeah, if you followed i was also debating the issue with chic2pimp. Longevity might give the edge to Redondo (in CM/DM) but don't take it from the guy he was very good. In this era of no tackle from the back, no 2 footed challenges he would have been a boss man. Modric maybe but not Kroos, he has been too much the junior partner of Modric for him to be rated that high. Modric no1, and I still put Kroos above Redondo in a couple of years. |

Guti was good in flashes, he has a good through pass(suru) but he wasnt dominant enough in their midfield It done reach 5 years already? If Modric wins his first league this season, then I'll put him in pole position. You need a league title to claim that spot. Guti was an unprofessional player. I've never seen a lazier central midfielder. He was also married to a tranny. Na Raul-Guti-Casillas parapo and political structure that kept Guti at Madrid all those years despite such laziness. |

afrodoc2: The 2 Man Utd fans in the debate said he is NOT, Chic2pimp who is NOT a Man Utd fan said he is. Where did you get the over tripping statement from? Like you said ( and i also mentioned earlier) the most talented Madrid midfielders like Schuster, Hagi, Laudrup and Seedorf of the era played just 2 or 3 years so by virtue of longevity Redondo has the edge in CM/DM. I would say by virtue of longetivity only would I agree with chic2pimp claims. There is really only maybe Guti that can claim to have played 5 years in that midfield in his prime. Give Kroos and Modric 2 more years and they overtake Redondo IMO. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by Ibime(m): 4:57pm On May 11, 2017 |
Redondo being greatest RM midfielder of 30 years is news to me.
That midfield was not that dominant nor consistent. They had 2 European wins but were not steamrollering teams consistently. Redondo while technically classy also struggled physically in many matches.
A bit of misty eyed revisionism if you ask me as well as Manure fans overtripping over his performance against them. Let's just say Makelele was an improvement on Redondo in DM position in 2000.
The only point I will concede is that Madrid have hardly had a long-term midfielder in the last 30 years that stayed for 5 years in the first team. So chic2pimp could be right if Guti is the main competitor or Zidane who was washed from 2003 to 2006. |

What I know is that the state assembly approved more money for ameachi in 2 years than money spent by odili in 8years with nothing to show except for the catastrophic monorail. Yes amechi painted some schools and worked on few inner city roads but that is grossly inadequate to the amount of money approved and spent by his administration. Wike has borrowed N120Bln in just 2 years, increasing our debt profile to N147bln. That means Amaechi is responsible for the balance of N27bln give or take monthly repayments. airmark: Dont muddle things up bro. Anelka clocked 18 years in march 1997, while Mbappe hit 18 in december 2016. If we want to compare these guys at 18, it will be anelka of 1997/1998 season vs Mbappe of 2016/2017 (we even conceded 2 months to anelka i.e april/may 1998 he was 19, while from september 2016 to december 2016, mbappe was 17 years) .
We will have Anelka ( 6 goals in 26 matches in 1997/1998 season) vs Mbappe (14 goals in 26 matches in 2016/2017).
Without even touching his numbers against man city, dortmund and juve. Anelka was not better than kelechi at 18. No need getting too pedantic. I am not stuck on the number 18. Why I called Anelka is because it is in my memory that he was burning down EPL as a teenager. So in 1998/99 season, Anelka was 19 and burning up EPL. He only turned 20 toward the end of the season. Mbappe was 17 at start of this season but only scored 3 league goals before his 18th birthday. So in essence, we are comparing Mbappe burning up Ligue1 at 18 to Anelka burning up EPL at 19. It's a valid comparison, no? I could have picked Michael Owen at 17, it doesn't matter. In essence, what I am saying is I don't feel comfortable breaking transfer record for a teenager in his first season. He could be as good as Anelka, or might be as good as Ronaldo Lima or maybe a Michael Owen. Even Ronaldo Lima was given time to show working at PSV before he started breaking transfer records. One more season would provide more comfort. And who said Kelechi is 18 sef? |

airmark: The highlighted must be a joke. At 18, anelka was not even considered fully fit for ligue 1 matches, let alone killing big teams in europe. In fact it was when he reached 21 that he developed that heart for scoring goals. Even at that, it took him 35 matches to score 17 goals and scored 1 goal in 5 ucl matches. Anelka wasnt as good as iheanacho at 18. Mbappe's fee is too high but thats what the dearth of reliable goal-poachers in the game and madness in tf after pogba's deal caused. Will it stop? No. So in 5 years time, when we review and we may find out it's a smart and profitable venture considering the transfer market at that time.Meanwhile, Mbappe has a heart that every coach wants in a striker. Rashford is doing well but he is far from mbappe in the art of goal scoring. They are both growing, but will bet on mbappe to bring greater returns faster than rashford in a great team like madrid. Anelka in his 19th year scored 19 goals and won PFA YPOTY and earned a £22m move to Madrid. In his 20th year, he scored the winner in the UCL final. He was bought for only £500k by Arsenal at 17/18. At similar age, Anelka was where Mbappe is now, and I don't see the skill in Mbappes game that would make me price him at Ronaldo Lima level. You may claim his price could go up. Similarly, his price could go down and defenders could suss him out next year. There is nothing that makes an Mbappe with 2 years record under his belt much more than £80m so I wonder why the rush to pay such bucks now. Some players only have one good season you know. Quality is defined by ability to stay at high level over a long period. Rada Falcao a Chelsea and Manure flop has outscored him. How sure are you of putting such money behind him? |

airmark: Mbappe played fewer matches than batshuayi in ligue 1. If you consider their goals/match ratio, batshuayi didnt do better than him. If madrid sells morata and buys mbappe then barca and other top clubs in europe are in trouble. It's like investing in a talented striker who will serve for more than 10 years, under a coach like zizou. He is going to score so many goals for madrid. Laliga is a very good place for him to blow up, not so many cutlass-holding defenders like in epl. My man, as far as I am concerned, such transfer fee for 18 year old is a big risk for as yet unproven quality. Mbappe is not showing anything Anelka didn't show at age 18. Is Anelka a top top bracket striker? I haven't seen the interplay, touch, dribbling etc that makes him £80m player. What I'm seeing so far is extreme pace and hunger only for now. Not saying he's not good, but we need to see more. Nihilist could be right that he might just be a lucky Rashford for now. I highlight that he has scored less Ligue 1 goals than Batsuayis last season for a reason - to bring balance to the argument. For example, Falcao has scored more goals in less games and Cavani has more than double his tally. If we take a more historical view, we will probably even find that Tammy Abraham has a much better youth career record. In other words, £80m is what I expect to pay for the next Ronaldo Lima, and Mbappe is yet to show he is more than the next Anelka. |

The Spaniard's rejuvenation would make it difficult for me and most probably any manager to think about signing a new winger now.
Pedro albeit not too young has the needed vigor, spark, brilliance and experience to help us mount a serious UCL challenge next term and play to defend our EPL title.
What that front three needs now is a badass forward that would take over from Costa.
