It failed because Neither Gerard nor Lampard could ever really play all that well as central midfielders nor control possession which is why the successful parts of those players careers involved them having zero responsibility and basically being allowed to be glorified number tens. Lampard played as CM when Chelsea were hammering Barca 4-2 and Bayern in the mid 2000s.

The problem comes with asking them to play CM without a specialist DM alongside them. Lampard can play with a Makelele successfully as he did many times on his way to coming 2nd in WPOTY. Infact he literally made WPOTY 2nd place playing in a midfield two with these two performances below.

The problem is when you ask him to play alongside Gerrard who is not a DM, so you have two players outside of their natural positions.

They were playing a traditional 4-4-2. Milner only converted to CM in the last 4 years and was an out and out winger then hugging the touchline, likewise Gerrard was hugging the touchline.

More important is the placement of the strikers with Defoe and Rooney way up the pitch.

It's easy to twist it one way but everything boils down to the coaches instruction. If the coach had said Rooney drop to the right and Gerrard tuck in, you can make that claim but those watching live know the structure they are playing with
