Combine that with his record at Aston Villa and his record breaking exploits in the youth team where he used to score 40-50 goals per season, it will take someone of poor temperament to write such a player off without giving him a decent chance.

Yes, management was poor. That team could do better with good management but it's not a sure bet. Remember Emile Heskey, Darren Bent, Defoe are the striking options whilst wings are left to Joe Cole, Kieron Dyer, SWP. Where management messed up was forcing 4-4-2 formation because Beckham could not play wings in a 4-3-3. That meant shoehorning Gerrard and Lampard into a 2 man midfield which will never work. Left to me, I would play Carrick, Scholes and Lampard in midfield with Gerrard on right-wing. They could have done better with this set-up.
