Kimbeast: Totti From 2000-2004 was as good as any other player on the planet. Madrid went for him twice but he refused. Del Piero at his best was nearly as good as Ronaldo. Totti was right up there with Zidane and Dinho during those period. Del Piero was simply not as gifted
Then he carried a relatively poor Roma side to another title challenge in 2004. This was around the time when Serie A was arguably the best league in the world.
What is this one saying? Ronaldo 1990s form was above any height Zidane and Ronaldinho reached. Good grief.
BTW, Totti never competed on Ronaldinho level. When Totti was in his prime, he was never in contention on World level. Ronaldinho and co saw competition in Sheva, Lampard, Gerrard,.Kaka et al who ran the 2000s, not no Totti. God forbid, I would be the no10 in a World Cup winning side and they totally overlook me and crown a bloody centre back like Cannavaro with no mention of my name.
Totti was a local champion during the decline of Serie.A. The height of SerieA was late 80s to late 90s. Serie A were whipping boys in 2000s with the exception of Milan.
We can smell your inexperience,.and know that you missed the 1990s from this post. Being close to Ronaldo in the late 90s is the closest thing to God level.
This is not dem say, dem say. DelPiero played with Zidane throughout late 90s and Zidane was 2nd fiddle to DelPiero throughout.
Young niggas/ God keep me from.these young niggas/ Not the smart ones Lord, just the. . . .
Roland17: Sir, don't make hasty conclusions because while I may be younger than you, I saw pre-injury Ronaldo very much and while my first world cup was USA 94, I followed and caught up with pre 94 football games and this including Italia 90, Mexico 86 and Espana 82, UCL champions league games and club football before. Shout out to "Best of Football Show" which I never missed on Sundays.
Did you watch Serie A on weekly basis in from 1996 to 1998? There is catching up, and there is living it live.
My guy, DelPiero and Ronaldo were like Messi and Ororo of those days. Everything Ronaldo does, DelPiero would answer him. Who can forget the title decider when Collina declined to give Ronaldo a penalty for a foul, only for DelPiero to break and score the winning goal that took the title away from Inter.
There is what you watch live and what you catch up historically. They resonate differently. This is why I told chic2pimp he was still in primary school during DelPieros heyday. Real life experience will give you a different feel from hindsight review. DelPiero at peak vs Totti at peak is not comparable.
Roland17: A lot of if's and but's. Totti suffered several injuries during his career, he even played world cup games injured and still performed. El Phenomenon suffered an injury that could have ended his career but guess what? He went ahead to become a bigger demon ost injury, racking up numerous individual and team achievements. Abeg make una no dey use another person weakness hold pesin down.
You might be of slightly younger generation Sir.
Nobody who saw Ronaldo pre-1998 would compare him to 2000s Ronaldo.
chic2pimp: Alex certainly had a higher peak but I still contend His body of work is not enough to say He is handily the better player of the two. All your other points are simply "ifs" and "buts"
If Ronaldo career had finished in 1998, the level he reached from 1995-1998 would be enough to place him above Totti. Same goes for DelPiero.
Zidane in a way came from nowhere to win WPOTY thanks to World Cup because based on club season, it was a 2 horse race between DelPiero and Ronaldo. Totti has never reached that level. . . as below:
A40: You can dispute the length of his peak but Totti never sniffed that 3 season peak.
gensteejay: Interesting, bro. "Tamuno" reminds me of late Prof. Tekena Tamuno of UI, one of the highly respected personalities in the academia in Nigeria.
He must have been an Ijaw?
All Tamuno is Ijaw, specifically Eastern Ijaw ie Rivers State mostly
chic2pimp: Totti shades it. With the Azzuris, It is most certainly Totti. The trequartista is both players prefered position when it comes to the national team and Totti more often than not gets the nod when a decision has to be made as to who plays that role. Also Italians will never forgive Alex for His horrific performance at the Finals of Euro 2000. Totti on the other hand was the best player on the pitch that night.
Club Footy is the tougher one. Alex obviously had a far more fruitful club career owing to the fact that He played for Juve. Having said that, we are talking strictly Serie A, then it's Totti again. However If we include European Footy, then it's Alex.
DelPiero was the better player but his peak was short-lived. He was finished by 1999. I think the cruciate injury compounded by his father's long term incurable illness finished him physically and mentally. DelPiero was the only player I saw go toe-to-toe with a peak Ronaldo. You were still in primary school then. Anything after 1998 is not representative of the real Del Piero.
Barryseal: Bros you never can tell what will happen at the Olympics. The next Bolt can breakout in Japan just like Usain did at his first Olympics. It's safe for the young man to assume this and work hard to beat his PB. His baseline looks very good.
The new Bolt, Christian Coleman is about to be suspended for missing 3 drug tests. From what I'm seeing this year, 9.96 can medal. I was at Birmingham Diamond league last Sunday where 10.07 was enough for Yohann Blake to win. Previous medallists like DeGrass were running 10.13 while Africas best sprinter Akani Simbine who nearly medalled at last Olympics was posting 10.15. Times are slowing since the days of Bolt/Gatlin/Gay. I won't be surprised if 9.92-9.95 wins the next Olympics if Coleman is suspended.
eph12: Var denied the penalties or var was never consulted?
If VAR referee spots the referee has made a mistake, he is supposed to contact the referee by earpiece to take it to VAR. Ultimately VAR referees allowed the field referees to get away with wrong calls
sebod: Hehehehhe.......ibime is now paying these Shekpites in their own coin and they are turning against him I never knew this time would come when he was using these same metrics and some funny defence lines against Iniesta and you guys were hailing him
Same rule applies to all men whether Iniesta or Hazard.
airmark: It's shocking. Imagine fbs calling Hazard shakushaku, while his Willian has number of goals of a defender.
Why did we tolerate Willian this long?
If Messi had offered what Willian offered us, would Neymar had won all that he won with Barca?
IMPORTANT UPDATE:
Unproductive Willian - 51 goals in 6 years in England
Productive Iniesta - 57 goals in 16 years in Spain
HewlettPackard: na today America stop to they send western union to Nigeria? unless strongly insisted by the customer, is WU the only method of sending money? Small discussion everyone is throwing tantrums, some every swearing, others wishing they could lay their hands on the krattos guy, even after stating he's playing the devils advocate. Does he defending Scam make him a scammer? is an attorney who defends a notorious kidnapper in a law court also a kidnapper. Of the argument against, only Apari own made sense.
A lawyer gets paid to defend kidnappers. Krattos is defending fraudsters and thieves out of the abundance of his conscience.
There is no advocacy for the devil.
A small mind such as his will see Yahoo as bringing positive cash flows into the country. A greater mind will see the reputational damage which impacts the ability to do business and bring investment. Whether it's access to instant money transfer systems which Nigerian businesses are unable to access due to payment platforms distrust of Nigerians. Whether it's direct investment decisions (we've just seen a tech company pull out of Nigeria citing employee fraud. Even JUMIA put us on blast to New York Stock exchange this week that they lost $60m in Q2 partly due to Employee fraud). Whether it's the ability to access VISAs. Whether it's the ability of our young entrepreneurs and professionals to access opportunities, or attend business meetings and form foreign partnerships.
All of these and more are affected because of Yahoo, outright stealing by Nigerian employees, supported by one small boy in IMSU who doesn't even know his left from right, typing nonsense on Nairaland.
I by rights as a Nigerian, and millions more like me should be investing money in Nigeria but I'm not stùpid. Diasporans can alleviate Nigerian unemployment if only they knew the playing field was fair. 90% of us who threw money into Nigeria lost it because of greedy and fraudulent people whether it be customs, govt officials, regulatory bodies, employees etc. . . . .while 90% who threw money into Western Society saw it grow.
Greatihex: i am sorry if it seems like an insult, but you seem to forget a lot. Suarez won the golden shoe with cr7. Hazard should be the one feeling aggrieved for not winning the award, not Kane. Hazard was the one who came second to Kane.
Whatever your opinion on who deserves it, Kante win was not undisputable
Greatihex: If hazard was not working hard for Mourinho in midfield and defence, why would Mourinho bench hazard the following season just because he is not tracking back to help his leftback.
Because Hazard came back fat and unfit and could not do the same things he did the season before physically
Greatihex: which one is this 40 goals you keep mentioning anybody don ever reach 35 before talk more of 40?
Kane don knack 29 goals before for epl, nobody look em side. Kante won it. What is the difference between 29 and 31 that suarez scored?
Many of The voters don't just count goals before they vote, like you, that is why Kante and VVD won it.
All these things you are saying about an attacking doing this and that is because of the rubbish cr7 was doing just to keep up pace with Messi and he was able to appeal to the sentiments of the people who vote. Thank God, things are beginning to change of recent and the hard workers in midfield and defence are beginning to get the recognition they deserve.
Not those times they just give awards to people who score tap ins up and down
Suarez took European Golden shoe from Messi and Ronaldo
Kane could feel aggrieved to lose to Kante. Kante beat him on team success and as reward for the prior season also. This is why I didn't include Kante in the list of undisputable awards.
You should be ashamed as a representative of an attacker like Hazard, and promoting hard workers in midfield and defence and trying to tie Hazard in with them. Is Hazard a hard worker in midfield and defence? Let him go and compete with his fellow attackers, he is busy borrow-posing with defenders and defensive midfielders.
If anyone should complain about attackers getting all the awards, it should be Kante, VVD and co, not Hazard.
Whether you like it or not, when they list the greatest players of all time, they will list Pele, Maradona, CR7, Messi, Cruyff, Di-Stefano etc before they get to hardworking defenders and midfielders. Same goes for awards. If those DMs and defenders were the best players, they should have trained to be attacking players from academy level but most weren't good enough.
If Hazard like, let him be pallying defenders instead of focussing on attacking returns like his fellow attackers.
airmark: Hazard had 7 goals and 5 assists before January. In the whole season he had 14 goals and 10 assists, which means he had half of his total Goals+Assists for the season by December. How was that ghost mode, Mr. Ibime?
14 goals and 10 assists is ghostmode for an attacker who would be rated best in the league. It only looked significant in 2nd half of season cos Mourinho went into defensive lockdown mode so these paltry figures were enough to win games 1-0.
Greatihex: this falsehood that you keep preaching here, one day i will have the time to debunk it.
Like i said earlier, your problem is the glass that you use to watch a player.
If a player does not score or assist; he had a bad game.
I wonder why you didn't come here to shut people up when they were saying that ndombele had a bad game in Tottenham's first game
Attackers get rated on goals and assists whether you like it or not. Yes, you could have good games without goals and assists like Bernardo Silva, but that will not qualify you to claim best player when killers are talking.
Wetin concern me with Ndombele. Is he Chelsea player that I have to comment on his every game. From what I watched he had a poor game
Greatihex: i keep saying it. The problem you are having is the criteria that you use to rate a player's performance.
Even hazard knows that his 2014/2015 is the best in his career. Nigga was covering every part of the pitch. From defence to midfield to attack.
Was much consistent in performance. The players that voted knew better
Hazard was in ghost mode till January. Costa and Fabregas established a lead, then he took over from February. He can't say that's his best season for half a season work.
pamcode: I stand to be corrected but I believe when Aguero joined City they were third best behind United and Chelsea and had not won the title in like 50yrs that is not so different from Tottenham position now yet he won two premier leagues and finished as top scorer all before Guardiola. In terms of Injury Aguero has suffered more 5 out of 8 seasons in EPL he has missed 7 or more games, the season Kane won his first Golden boot Aguero missed 8games yet still finished just one goal behind, last season the same case 5 games missed yet one goal behind. In spite of Injury Aguero has been a top performer and would have gotten the PFA.
It just hit me that Kane himself has never won the PFA so maybe we should just agree to disagree.
Aguero is in comfort zone. He is happy to pop 20+ goals per season and not push himself to the 30+ which some players of similar talent like RVP, Suarez and Salah have done. If Aguero keep maintaining 20+, that brings midfielders like Sterling and KDB into contention with him, and they will pip him to the award. He needs to punch cleanly above 30 goals to be sure.
The way I'm seeing Sterling, with all the Goodwill he has built with his anti-racism campaign, he will sweep all the black votes at the next awards. If he pop 20 and no one else pop above 30, he should win.
Greatihex: i no gree for salah own. That one na big lie. KDB had a very strong case for that award and the vote showed it.
Why did you not add that of Kante? Is it because he is not a player that scores goals? Did Kante not have a trully world class season?
You are spoiling football with your logic o. To you the best players are only those who score goals
You know it's one rule for defenders and another rule for attacking players. If attacking player pop 40 goals, nothing a defensive player can do to wrestle it from him.
For defensive player to win, it's either no attacker performed outstandingly or defensive player broke some records eg in 2005, Chelsea broke record for least goals conceded with just 13, so they must consider Terry. Same with VVD. No attacker punched above 30 goals plus Liverpool clean sheets was approaching historic levels
Kante win in 2017 is confirmatory that he was the driving force of Leicester win the prior year. If attacker had popped 40 goals that season, they would still take it from him. But that award was reward for 2 years work in a way.
Segedinho: They were but some1 else was better in his department than they were in theirs,in a given season thus the accolades. ..
Not always. Ryan Giggs 2009 season was undeserved and could easily have gone to someone else. Players voted for him cos they were inspired to see an old man still playing well, yet in the grand scheme of things, I think he played only half the minutes available.
