tbaba1234: The Unprofessional Football League : Kunle Soname Spoke The Startling Truth…..
Remo Stars FC of Ogun State is presently one of the top club side parading young players. Since their emergence as a league side, the team has continue to feed its ideology of players development and youthfulness philosophy .
The Chairman of the Club, Hon. Kunle Soname in 2015 made the headlines by being the first Nigerian to own a top European Football Club. The business mogul purchased 70% of the club deal which made him the owner of Portuguese side, Club Derpostivo Feirense.
It was one of the biggest story the Nigerian football ideology will produce in century. Much so, many future are secured through this unprecedented efforts.
The deal according to him will create a viable platform for players transfer, training for officials and administrators which in the long run will expand the horizon of development of people involved and the Nigeria football system at large.
The Ikene born business tycoon speaking recently at the Gateway United’s Stakeholders Forum in Abeokuta bemoaned the poor structure and less enterprising status of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Startling! As a football investor, Hon. Soname noted, the league is a waste of time, energy, resources and money as he said he will rather focus on the development of players than any financial gains from owing a club in the Nigeria League.
Remo Stars is one of the few private owned club in the Nigeria top league, if a private football investor would bear such remarks on the league, what tale would state Government which owns bunch of the top flight sides comment, A total waste of tax payers money.
The common cliché of Government business is not a business would justify the fact that no state government has really earned significant economic benefits from their owned club.
The handwriting of the Remo Stars Chief indicates that Nigeria League does not or never commensurate the investment being expended on it.
The Remo Stars Chief noted that his team has been in the NPFL twice and on both occasion were relegated.
Neither rocket science or magic is the effort needed to transform the league. The insincerity of the administrators which will drive the transformation is missing and there is no two way about that.
Quite different, Chief Soname confirmed he has sent 14 young boys to Europe in the last 4 years. It is indeed a narrative changing focus as no team ever come close to that transfer record.
The fire brigade approach and unprofessional direction of the league has render many of the club sides less productive.
With or without sponsor, how weighty would the compensation of Premier League teams after their participation in a league season and how much will the transfer of 14 players to Europe with clauses of agreement attached would earn a team. Glaring is the difference.
The Soname’s comment further established the notion of wrong people handling the league. Football is a business and should have it’s interest being protected at all times. The game has grown beyond mere rhetorics and now have significant effect in economic might of a society. What we are missing as a country through sport could not be quantified.
Apart from few, none of the Government owned club sides have a legacy of accountability or transparency even as Government subvention continue to fall into the club year in year out.
Recently, a newly inaugurated management of a state owned club complained bitterly after taking over the club. It was noted that the club only owned 7 players among all the players serving the club, while others are loaned players. It comes to mind that as a Government owned team that never pay taxes, pay for stadium, why should getting best legs services for a team proved so demanding.
Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different result is considered witless, so much that an unpackaged league may never be rewarding.
While we watch keenly when the league will live up to its best, development of players will continue to provide succour for whoever among the football investors thought it wise to prioritized.
Yemi Sodeeq
Too bad. That's why only state Governments can run football clubs in Nigeria.

On-form Ofoedu: Rohr should give me a chance Chikeluba Ofoedu is scoring goals is Israel and he wants to do the same for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Nigeria Gernot Rohr is getting this message some weeks ahead of the 2021 AFCON qualifier against Benin.
Knowns as ‘Chico’, the 26-year-old has delivered three goals and two assists in nine games for giants Maccabi Tel Aviv.
"I believe I have done a lot to attract a call to the National team and I trust I will not disappoint if given a chance to impress,” Ofoedu told Sportaccess.
“I know how difficult it is to break into the Super Eagles due to numerous established and emerging talents at the disposal of Gernot Rohr, but I think I can bring something to the team’s attack if called to the team.”
"Coach Rohr should give me a chance with the Super Eagles.”
So how are ‘Chico’s stats vs Super Eagles strikers?
Ofoedu: Three goals, two assists in nine Victor Osimhen (Lille): Eight goals, two assists in 11 Paul Onuachu (Genk): Five goals in seven Peter Olanyika (SK Slavia): Six goals, two assists in 15.
The Enugu-born player’s previous clubs include UNTH Healers FC, Enugu Rangers, 1461 Trabzon, Karşıyaka, Samsunspor and Eskişehirspor.
komekn: We were never going to be better than Brazil in any way shape or form.
Nonetheless, considering our players and thier level they did EXCEPTIONALLY well under the circumstances.
And in the scheme of things Awaziem played an intelligent game, Ekong and Ajayi did good however, Collins was chopped up like Suya by the Brazilians and the very weak link in the defence.
And in terms of defence midfield and our attack, as a collective the defence edged it, YES.
See am. E don change mouth
That aside, Collins did not do badly like you are painting it. He played one of his best games in our colors. Please go and rewatch that game
TheSuperNerd: Anyone here saying Brazil didn't play to their best is talking absolute bollocks and need brain surgery. Seems their optic nerve is in very bad shape.
Ignore them. They are super liars and deeply hypocritical.
I don't just understand the way some peeps here reason here. That was a stars studded Brazilian team for heavens sake's. A team that was bent on proving their worth after they drew Senegal.
They will always say things to bring down the achievement of Nigerian teams. Tomorrow they will say they are critics and not haters.
oloriooko: Rohr's weakness is making subs aptly He needs to learn to consult with his crew who should be his eyes and ears on the pitch Seem we are gradually turning to first half team which is very bad for us
We started with our best 11. The result was in our favor even at 1:1. Considering that we do not have much game Changing options on the bench it is safer to maintain the structure of the team, and watch the balance of play before making any substitutions.
Notice that Rohr's substitutions were all like for like. He just simply maintained the team's set up. No need for wild switches.
The manner of approach shows the team really did their home work ahead of this game.
The defense was our best section of the team today. All 4 defenders took their various turns to intercept goal bound moves. They also defended well together.
We lost most midfield battles but due to slow build up of the Brazilians they were most times able to recover and shield the defense. Aribo was the stand out performer in that section. Ndidi was his usual self while Iwobi didn't do enough to link up play with the attack.
We were always deadly going forward with electrifying Chukwueze and Simon. Osimhen's pressing was also a cause for worry for the Brazilian defense.
The full backs didn't do well enough to link up play with the attack but that's fine for me, considering the nature of opposition.
Uzoho is improving with each game and Okoye came in, though not tested, and showed great composure. I think we are building goalies for 2022 already.
The substitutions didn't change much of the course of the game. They didn't do badly, but I must single out Onuachu. That guy should go play basketball ball abeg.
Wait! Was it just Brazil that we played 1:1 against?
In the 2015 U17 world youth championship, Osimhen and Chuks destroyed a Junior Selecao defense led by Eder Militao, 3-0 it ended in favour of the Eaglets. Fast forward to 2019, the youngsters are once again on a collision course, now for their various senior national teams
Joebie: as a child you need a little bit of stubbornness. Parents may have good intentions but they are not perfect.
Do you know Emmanuel Amuneke's father was always coming to chase him home from the field with a cane in his hand?
Emma used to hawk bread, and what such parents wanted was when you are through with the set you went to hawk come home and take more. But Emma would rather hang his tray somewhere and join other boys to play footie.
komekn: Were you are born can influence you to a great degree, but the BIGGEST INFLUENCE possible is your parents if they they play their role correctly.
I was born in the UK and l went to Nigeria for the first time when l was 11. Before l became too Oyibo according to my Father and off to boarding school in Warri I was despatched.
I am not Ibo, but l speak Ibo l understand and speak my language as well. I have a workable understanding of Yoruba very basic though.
My cultural identity is entirely Nigerian but l can be multi faceted. When I'm with oyibo you would think i am a lost son. Often l hear Nigerian talking about me thinkibg l dont understand what they are saying sometimes derogatory. That's very amusing when l then speak Ibo or Yoruba to them.
When l reach Warri you may think that na complete area I be.
So am l still an Abroadian ❓
There are Nigerians who were born and bred in Nigeria predominantly the women. Some from small towns and villages.
On arrival they become more oyibo than the Oyibos denying all things Nigerian within a few weeks in the UK. Are they not Nigerian born and bred ❓
Something to think about its not so simplistic.
Point of correction Sir. It is not "Ibo". It is "Igbo".
Mujtahida: Let me use your last line to press a point.
The bolded right here is where the problem of our football stems from. Street football cannot fly in this era. Football is now an intellectual exercise. That's why academies have taken over. It is not for nothing that this era is tagged the era of the coaches.
Many European greats like Puskas, Eusebio, Cruyff, etc honed their skills on the streets but as usual oyibo man will not rest and will keep refining the system. Thus from the mid 80s academies began popping up in this countries and now they are everywhere.
Even Brazil does not rely on street anymore.
Imagine going for a competition involving the intellect and just because in the past everybody brought street to the competition, you continue to do so even now while your competitors bring in people trained in academies. Omo dem go win una tire.
I like street football oo, very much. I even prefer it but the reality is that that era is gone.
I get your point. But before those kids get to the age of attending those academies nko? Where do they develop their skills? Where do 3-5 year old kids develop their skills?
seankafor: Why e be say most naija and Africa players claims to come from the streets? Never seen any player that comes out to say he came from a rich home..
Nice motivation from oshimen
Over 70% of Nigerians live below the poverty line. Add to that children of the rich are usually locked up behind the high walls either reading or doing assignments while the children of the poor are allowed to roam about the streets. The streets, that's where they Develop their football skills.
Nigeria league is dead and to revive it would take a miracle which is not even feasible for now based on what i saw of Nigeria leagues in the 80s,90s and part of early 2000s.
I see how humility 017 has been murmurings about NPFL,coaches and how he was so frustrated about football set up in Nigeria leagues but what is certain we cannot run away from reality facing us.Thanks to these FBs boys coming up and serving as rescuers.
Those of us,may be icon4s,goldfish80,omonbala,Kokmne, thegoodjoe, forgiveness etc who had the opportunities of following Nigeria football development since 80s can say much about how it went wronged.
Nigeria football was beauty to watch in the 80s with high class of coaches, namely Father Tiko,Otto Gloria,Alabi Aissien of Bendel Insurance, James Peter,Chris Udemezie,Paul Hamilton,Willy Bazuaye,Jossy Lad of Leventis utd fame,Dominguez an Argentine who coached Rancher bees in the 80s,Joe Erico,Tunde Disu,Kadiri Ikhana,Baraje,Kafaru Alab,Kelechi Emereole,Alphonsus Dike etc
These are the coaches that shaped Nigeria football they are well schooled when it comes to football with different refresher coaching courses in abroad and far better than the coaches we have now managing our players.
Also good football administrators who are ready to sacrifice for the growth of the beautiful game are on ground, administrators like Anthony Ikhazobo,Emeka Omeruo,Nathaniel Idowu the father of Philip Idowu a british runner,Isaac Akioye,Patrick Okpomo,Sylvester Akibwumi,SB Williams,Greek born John Mastroudus etc.
Then it was a joy watching Nigeria league with player like Emma Okala,Segin Odegbami who i still rated as the best winger to ever come out of Africa,Muda Lawal who Ndidi Wilfred still has his record to beat, this league produced best of the best wigers like Adokiye Aimiesemeka, Felix Owolabi,Humphrey Edobor,Folorunsho Okenla,James Etokebe,Friday Elaho, Emma Amuneke,Chris ohenhen, Victor Ikpeba, these left wingers that our talented Chuckwueze would find it difficult to bench but they are products of the now dead leagues.
Oh anytime i remembered Segun Odegbami,Benji Nzeakor,Tarila Okoronwata,Wole Odegbami,Augustine Igbinabaro,Ndubuisi Okosieme,Emma Okocha,Uwem Ekarika,Jide Oguntuase,Tijani Babaginda,Finidi George etc i laughed at people rating Simeon Moses,Samuel Kalu,Oyekwuru,Olayinka and co,these guys cannot lace the boots of these old wingers. And these guys are product of the same league.
I watched one of eagles old tapes against Mexico and i saw how good was home based Ajibade Babalade in that match.Godwin Okpara was delighted to watch,a CB with beautiful skills.Chidi Nwanu was so strong as CB despite being a very average in height,Ben Iroha was a product of this league playing for eagles,Finidi entered eagles starting eleven as home based,Thompson Oliha the samething,Moses Npakor also as home based player.
I remembered Peter Rufai,Patrick Ikeji,Best Ogedegbe,Willy Agbonibare,Raymond Best,William Opara,Lateef Yusuf who still has the record of highest clean sheets in Nigeria. These keepers are products of Nigeria league, not to talk of Enyeama,Ejide,Aiyenugba,Etafia or era of Biodun Baruwa,Emma Babayaro,Dosu Joseph,Bode Babbignton,Leye Akinde,Victor Gbenebichie but now no keeper good enough for eagles, we need to resort to a div 3 keeper in Okoye Maduka, wahala dey,the league is dead.
I just don't know what we can do to revive Nigeria football,i mean NPFL.In the 80s,90s we have university students playing in the same leagues, player like Emma Olisadebe,Peter Ayilobi,Gabriel Jigbale,Edith Agoye,Adeolu Adekola,Andrew Uwe,Impowosa Omoregie,Niyi Ogunlana,Seyi Olofinjana,Nosa Osadolor,Yemi Akinyanju, etc.
Humidity baba,i know your grievances but what can we do to solve this issue still remained a mirage.
I was almost shedding tears towards the end of this epistle.
I missed football of the old . Younger people will not really understand each time we make references to those players.
The Nigerian football scene was really great. Excellent upright local coaches, highly talented players and fairly to very good football pitches.
Club derbies were like today's ex-classico. Rangers vs Shooting stars was always jam packed. There were other smaller derbies like: Iwuanyawu vs Rangers, Abiola babes vs Stores, Enyimba vs Sharks etc.
And when u saw those games on TV they were a delight to watch.
The Nigerian league is in its all time low. What a big shame.
I am happy for the springing up of foreign groomed players at least it has helped the Super Eagles to remain descent.
darkelf: I wasn't really impressed with Bonaventure's goals against Madrid. While, it is a rare feat for a player from a lower league club to score twice against Madrid in a competitive match, o wonder why he was slipping unnecessarily before scoring. A more agile defender would have dove in for the tackle after his slips.
Thinking about it now, Ramos would've caused a penalty had he dove in carelessly. Well, who knows....congrats to the lad aha. The sky isn't the limit
rabzy: No worry that 'Right now' don enter our vocab for this thread, it would save a lot of people still. Like 'Right now' chukwueze has nothing to offer SE because he had one bad game. 'Right now', Osihmen has everything to offer Chelsea and stroll into Chelsea team.
RIGHT NOW Osimhen, Chukwueze, Aribo and Bonaventure are on fire.
The contest for Nairaland Young player of the year will be interesting. The Brazil and Benin games will determine a lot
But I think RIGHT NOW Chukwueze and Osimhen are ahead.
safarigirl: I mean, in his post, he clearly said "RIGHT NOW, he has nothing to offer the Super Eagles"
RIGHT NOW was two years ago, and two years ago, Osimhen wasn't tearing up any leagues. That post is dated 2017, not 2019, so, he wasn't wrong if it is that post.
TheGoodJoe: I am pointing to you that Osimhen is better now but was still a good quality player two years ago. You think Rohr would have given Osimhen the 9 shirt of the Super Eagles over Kayode if Rohr did not notice his quality two years ago?
See this man. You too like argument. Did I say he was not good 2 years ago? I only said he is better now. Chai Goodjoe
TheGoodJoe: 19-year-old Haaland is just starting. He has scored 17 goals in 10 club games, including four hat-tricks, and will look to add to that tally for Salzburg against Liverpool on Wednesday And he scored yesterday against Liverpool.
