As icon8 pointed out, you basically withheld this part from your tori.
Again, if you are earning 2k p.c.m as you say, there's no way 5 - 6 months unpaid PAYE tax will be 138 pounds.
Better hold fire on any spending plans first, HMRC fit still dey come.

Everybody knows HMRC will collect every dime owed to the last penny, nobody is disputing that. But the fact remains that I didn’t get taxed till about 5-6 months (only NI deduction was reflected on payslip, income tax was always 0.00) and I know a couple of newly arrived that this has happened to. How that happened, I don’t know.

And las las I got a letter saying i owed £138

But you didn’t tell us that part before, did you?

That’s the exact point we were making. Yours is an exception (if it indeed happened), not the norm. A lot of mistakes happen due to laziness, high workload, and an array of other reasons. That it happened to you and a few others does not make it the norm, it often comes at a great cost when you have to refund the taxman from the money you have already spent the previous year. The fact is that tax is applied cumulatively from the first pay cycle (week or month - 1/52 or 1/12 as the case may be), not until after you have earned your full allowance for that tax year.

So, to answer the OP’s question again, tax is due for payment from the first wage/salary and their employer was right to have deducted and remitted their tax to HMRC from the first salary. This has nothing to do with tax code or gross earnings.

Waiting for the next person to quote me with the dictionary definition of tax code as if we are children that needed to be schooled cheesy

Lol, and someone would have us believe they didn’t pay (PAYE) tax for 6 months cheesy. While it’s not impossible (at risk of calling someone a liar), that would be a very rare exception, and not the norm. To come online and misinform folks confidently that that is the norm, is staggering and beggars belief.

NI is also a tax. In theory its supposed to be an earmarked tax for social security purposes (pensions, unemployment benefits, etc), but it's not, it goes into general taxation.

If you had no PAYE income tax deduction made for 5 - 6 months, there was probably an error somewhere, I would say (very unusual though). All new employees are tax coded when payrolled upon commencement of employment. That's what the starter checklist/P45 is for.

The point I think people are trying to make is that there is no statutory exemption from taxation for anyone when you get a new job, you must be put on the records as either not being taxed (NT) for whatever reason, standard 1257L, M, or whatever or basic rated (BR), or something.

Oga HR, you get time sir. It’s the confidence for me grin

Yes I did and the answer is simple tax will not be collected from your 1st ever salary until you earn above your taxcode, unles ur taxcode is BR then its 20% Your tax code dictates how much tax you are charged. your tax code is the amount you must earn above for tax to be collected simply put.
tax code
[tax code]
NOUN
a code number representing the tax-free part of an employee's income, assigned by tax authorities for use by employers in calculating the tax to be deducted under the PAYE system.

Not always the case, you get charged in taxed as per ur tax code. If your tax codes is 12000 and you only earn £11500, you wont be taxed. Hardly happens though

Did you bother to read the question I responded to? It’s not about tax code or rate, but whether tax and NIC are deducted from the first salary or if there is a ‘grace period’ before the taxman wields the big stick.

Hello. Please l just want to ask this, will I be charged for tax and NI for my very first salary in UK, I read something here that one won't be charged until after some months. My pay slip shows I was charged.

Yes, you get charged every pay cycle - week / month, from the first payment. It’s pay as you earn.

Interest-free periods vary.
Some card issuers offer up to 2 1/2 years interest free.
There are also balance transfer cards, through which you can transfer accumulated debt from one card to another, some of which also offer long interest-free periods.

In theory, you could buy an item on a credit card (for instance brand new PCs, phones or the proverbial Nairaland student's car in the region of £1k, using a money transfer card) and not pay a penny in interest other than the minimum monthly payment/money transfer fee on that debt for up to 3 1/2 years if you really wanted to.

As has been previously pointed out, all credit is debt, so ......

The Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK, nor is it part of Schengen. Hence the need for a transit visa for UK visa holders, post-Brexit.

Northern Ireland, however, is part of the UK. Hence the name United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

What to do, turn shower on, wet body, turn off, wash body without shower on (or turn on small), when body fully washed....... Rinse body off .......... grin.

This sequence, should not exceed 2 minutes, or you love to sing in the shower, whilst shower is running........ grin

I wish I had this type of your shower, my family are simply ignorant of the fact we are on a water meter.......... grin

@wanney, how about complaining to your landlord and ask them to fix it - whatever ‘it’ means? I’m surprised this is a thing in 2022 UK, and I must admit I’ve never seen or heard anything like it. If it’s an inconvenience, like it sounds, you should probably explore the possibility of getting the landlord to fix it.

When I talk say Nigerians and their communities are best dealt with in very small doses, people no go understand.
When I first come this country, my madam don already go put hand for Naija community for Manchy. I can live with Nigerians and their faking and forming (the number of strange approximations of British accents person hear dey wonderful), but when they come up with their so-called advice giving, na there I leave them. When I moved to Edinburgh, I select them carefully. The all-knowing crew: "Why you go buy manual moto, e dey pain for leg o" or "You for put those tickets for your credit card, credit card dey help for this country o" (as if person no sabi how much person get for pocket), I just avoid. No more Naija community for us, na one one.

I think the best way to deal with this is to be discerning and carefully chose who/what to listen to and who/what to ignore. People’s circumstances vary greatly and we should not be quick to see everyone through our own rose tinted or thorn laden lenses. Like in every community, there are brilliant people here that give genuine advices to help (a la Ticha) and there are some that are just your typical Yaya, Solo and Deborah, and in some cases, those famous aunties and uncles back home grin

This.
The person in question is well aware of what they want in terms of pricing. She's just asked for advice as to how to go about it. None of anyone's business as to why she wants to buy a 6k car, and the assumption of scarcity/paucity of funds because she is on a student visa is typically Nigerian.

Our people’s inability to mind their own business sometimes does my head in. I just don’t get why everyone was jumping on the OP’s case and suggesting they buy a dead arse car instead, and somehow implying that buying a £6k car is a bad idea, when they clearly don’t know who the OP is and what they can and cannot afford. It’s crass ignorance, poverty mentality or lazy generalisation at best. Not everyone that uses finance to buy something really needs the money - sometimes it’s just better to go that route, for so many reasons including credit profile building, extra liquidity and access to emergency funds, etc. I generally prefer spending other people’s free or cheap money while smiling at mine sitting pretty in my high earning savings or investment account lol. Imagine telling someone that has always driven a new/almost new car their entire life back home to buy a £1k 15-20 years old car in the name of being a foreign student. If that car doesn’t kill them, it’s going to be the reason they fail grin

Our people and their penchant for telling people how to live their lives. Someone asked a very specific question about car financing and people would rather advise them of buying a dead car, while ignoring the question asked. If they wanted your advice on what type of car to buy, they would have asked just that.

By the way, not every newcomer or foreign student is poor. Someone planning to buy a £6k car certainly knows why they want just that, and the type/model/age of car they want to own. Quit being sanctimonious and answer the question if you can, or simply ignore/look away if you don’t have an answer. Your unsolicited advice is not always welcome.

@OP, access to credit is based on your credit profile/records/score, and that, more often than not, is dependent on how long you have been in the country. While it is not impossible to get a car finance as a student, especially with 50% equity contribution in your case, it will certainly be expensive. In a nutshell, give it a shot.

I know it’s really not my business, nor anyone’s, for that matter. But I thought I’d sound a note of caution about credit cards. Please, please, and please, only get a credit card if you really need one and you understand what you are getting into. Nothing ruins lives and dreams in the western world than debt and credit related issues. You see that plenty money you suddenly have access to? Think twice before you touch it, and be double sure you know what you are doing. Otherwise, please stay away from it, to avoid stories that touch. If you however genuinely need one, do a lot of research and avail yourself of the technical knowledge and understanding of how a credit card works before you apply for one. Please don’t join the bandwagon or do it because you see others doing it. Everyone’s circumstances are different, and like someone used to say on part 1 of this thread, it’s not a credit card, it’s a debt card. Thank you for your time.

Dear Elders

I noticed that for the three months that I have worked, the only deduction from my salary has been NI, PAYE has been zero.

Is there anything to be worried here? Hope they will not come with sledge hammer and take all at once. Should I complain to my employer?

Would your gross earnings from when you started work until the 5th April be less than £12,570? If you answered yes, then you have nothing to worry about, as you would have earned below the annual income tax-free allowance for the 2021/2022 tax year and therefore exempt from paying income tax. You should however see a change from the 6th of April. Don’t worry, you go pay tax tire.
