Tech startups are joining Nigeria’s fight against coronavirus

In Nigeria, tech startups are beginning to step up too. Fledgling tech companies in Nigeria have been successful in the last few years in helping to reposition the country’s commercial capital, Lagos as Africa’s leading tech hub, particularly when it comes to funding and innovation. Last year local startups raised nearly $650 million, about half of all startup funding in Africa.

But innovative approaches to problem-solving in a crisis maybe the most crucial offering from these young companies. Lifebank, a health startup that finds and delivers blood to patients has turned its attention to seeking critical medical equipment for Covid-19 treatment and has created a national register to track hospitals with working ventilators and respirators. Hotel booking platform Hotels.ng has partnered with hotels to create isolation centers across Nigeria, an added buffer for the country’s limited quarantine facilities.

For its part, Jumia, the pan-African e-commerce giant, has donated face masks to Nigeria’s health ministry and has replicated the gesture in Kenya, Ivory Coast, Uganda and Morocco. Jumia has also offered its logistics network to distribute health products for local authorities.

Some of the support has come in form of targeted funding too. One year-old genomics research startup 54gene has launched a $500,000 fund to boost local testing capacity for coronavirus. It’s a significant move especially given Nigeria’s alarmingly low number of tests: South Africa has tested 100 times more people than Nigeria. Ventures Platform, a local VC firm, has also partnered with the Lagos science and research agency to find and fund innovative tech-based solutions that tackle coronavirus-related issues.

The efforts add to the impact young tech companies are having in Africa’s most populous country—from facilitating financial inclusion and solving perennial electricity problems to plugging gaps in local healthcare—and show how innovative thinking can be applied to easing the burden of the pandemic on Africa’s largest economy and by extension other countries in Africa. This is especially the case amid growing concerns about the level of the outbreak in Nigeria being understated given its low testing numbers.

Coronavirus breakthrough as scientists discover a drug used to treat HEAD LICE can kill COVID-19 cells

An anti-parasitic head lice drug available around the world has been found to kill COVID-19 in the lab within 48 hours.

A Monash University-led study has shown a single dose of the drug Ivermectin could stop the SARS-CoV-2 virus growing in cell culture.

'We found that even a single dose could essentially remove all viral RNA (effectively removed all genetic material of the virus) by 48 hours and that even at 24 hours there was a really significant reduction in it,' Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute's Dr Kylie Wagstaff said on Friday.

While it's not known how Ivermectin works on the virus, the drug likely stops the virus dampening the host cells' ability to clear it.

The next step is for scientists to determine the correct human dosage, to make sure the level used in vitro is safe for humans.

It is worrying how political positioning is addling some peoples reasoning ability. It is as if some people are no longer capable of arriving at the truth of a matter by considering its logic. For instance, given that any Nation for which Covid is rife among the population, constitutes longer-term danger to the world as a re-infecting point, why would any organisation dispensing funds to fight the disease withhold funds from that nation?

Reasoning like the above should lead an individual to conclude that since it is not in the world’s interest that any nation becomes a Covid reservoir waiting to re-infect the world, that it is unlikely World Bank has excluded Nigeria funds for any other reason save that it adjudged, rightly or wrongly, that Nigeria does not require it as much as others. Or the entire news is false.

Vanguard that reported the news didn’t even bother to speak to anybody from the ministry of finance or debt management office if the country applied for any Covid-19 support facility from the world. They just saw the report that Congo and Eritrea will benefit at the first instance and they concluded that Nigeria was excluded. In the same vain, I can also conclude that world bank excluded South Africa, Egypt, Ghana, Algeria, Angola etc.

It is also funny how they portrayed the world bank loan as some sort of gift to help the countries. The money is a loan and not a gift.

The Czech Republic tightened restrictions on Sunday to combat the new coronavirus outbreak, banning people from moving around except for work, essential shopping and other necessary activities until March 24.

Prime Minister Andrej Babis said the new measures would take effect from midnight, adding the government recommended that those who can work from home or take holidays.

The country of 10.7 million has confirmed 253 cases of the virus with no deaths reported so far.

The restrictions come a day after the government closed most shops and restaurants for at least 10 days. Other measures include a ban on nearly all international travel from March 16 and closing schools.

I Want to believe it is the residents in your area that fail completely to comply with the directive of the government or probably fail to adhere to the different sensitization campaigns by the government. Or was there any in UCH before now coz it seems you know Ibadan very well. The Infectious disease control at Olodo, a hospital commissioned by the former gov't only for them to move out every equipment over night was one of the centres renovated by Seyi with all equipments in place including the purchase of 60kva generator. Or was there any before now? Yes, so many people expect total lockdown in Ibadan, the question is how many of Ibadan residents are salary earners? Why didn't the FG declare Oyo state as one of the States on total lockdown despite seven reported cases of COVID-19 as against Ogun state with two reported cases yet was chosen as one of the states. Tell us the proactive measures he has not taken that other governors including the FG have taken?
Did you know with partial lockdown, foodstuff are getting skyrocketed on daily basis? Did you know Rivers state governor has relaxed the lockdown proclamation in some part of the state? My person, this matter is a serious one that needs wisdom to tackle. We don't need to lockdown millions of people who depend on daily income to survive. Doing that may bring up even a more calamitous actions.
