Culture / Re: 5 Reasons Nigerian Children Are Not Speaking Their Native Language by ideykwum: 9:00am On Mar 02, 2017
dammy13:
In the past children spoke Nigeria’s indigenous languages namely Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa fluently and unashamedly. However, today, the complete opposite is the case. Kids can barely communication in Efik or Idoma without adding a bit of English. The consequences of this are that many of these languages are facing extinction while some of them have gone extinct.

A research that is cited by those concerned to lend credence to the import of indigenous languages is that of former Minister of education, Prof. Babs Fafunwa. The late Prof made a case for the native language as the medium of education for the first 12 years of the child’s life.

Through an organized native language education program, they discovered children taught in the Yoruba language performed better. Regardless, it has not changed the fortunes of these languages because kids have refused to communicate. In line with this, Kikiotolu.com shares reasons children are not speaking their native language.

1. Parents don’t speak the languages to them
Parents don’t speak their mother tongue to their children anymore. In fact, some of these parents when they go for attending events one of the best hotels in Lagos , they order their children not to speak the language. How can such a child learn the language? Parents should speak more to their kids in their mother tongue.

2. It is tagged vernacular
In some schools today, Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo among other languages are banned because they are considered vernacular. A child who speaks his or her mother tongue would be penalized. So from the formative years of these children, they already have the perception that speaking their mother tongue is bad.

3. They are uncivilized
Many people believe that you are uncivilized or local if you speak your mother tongue. So, in other to join the bandwagon and be accepted, they dish Ibibio for English. This is all in the name of being civilized. Children have also been caught in this web

4. It is not compulsory in primary and secondary schools
While English is compulsory in secondary schools today, the indigenous languages are not even though a child must study one of these languages. Children will think the languages are a joke. Hence, they won’t bother to learn or speak it.

5. Technology
The engagement or interaction of children with technology is entirely in English. Their smartphone, video games, laptop and other tech gadgets are in English. So since many of them spend so much time with these gadgets, they don’t have anything to do with the languages. This is a challenge to Nigerian developers to design tech gadgets in the indigenous languages.

TonyeBarcanista:
By TonyeBarcanista

I have read several reports from different quarters about the ratings of Vice President Yemi osinbajo, who at present is acting in place of the indefinite absentee President Muhammadu Buhari. I have watched and read several paid promoters of Yemi Osinbajo, hyping him on social, broadcast and print media like he has done anything different from the failed moves of his boss since coming to power.

For avoidance of doubt, I am in complete agreement with Presidential spokesman Femi Adesina when he opined that there is nothing like Yemi Osinbajo administration, the VeePee is only performing his job as part of the Buhari administration that was sworn-in in 2015. As the number 2 man in the government, he is constitutionally empowered to act in place of his boss during the latters absence.

The Failure Called Professor Yemi Osinbajo
Back to the issue at hand, Nigerians will agree with me that Professor Osinbajo has been a core member and leader of the economic management team since inception of this administration. He is also the Chairman of both the National Economic Council and the National Planning Commission- by virtue of his office as Vice President of Nigeria. The point is that Professor Yemi Osinbajo has always been the key man in all economic policies of the federal government since May 29, 2015. What did we get? Recession!

In sane societies, VeePee Yemi Osinbajo, finance minister Kemi Adeosun, CBN Governor Godwin Emefielle and the Budget/National Planning minister Udo Udoma would have long tendered their resignation for driving Nigeria into her worst economic state since the amalgamation in 1914. Unfortunately, we have a sit tight tradition in Nigeria where failures believe they have right to remain in position of authority for eternity.

It is a shame that Nigeria’s economy under the watch of Yemi Osinbajo shrank to the point of achieving negative GDP growth for the first time since the 90s, doubled inflation rate and unprecedented depreciation of the naira, which led to untold hardship to Nigerians. The monetary policies of the CBN are more like a kindergarten idea, while the fiscal policies of the government are clueless and directionless.

It is on record that as the leader of Nigeria Ecomonic Management team, Yemi Osinbajo did not inherit a Naira at 420 to the Dollar in the parallel market. He inherited a Naira that traded at 220 to the Dollar in the parallel market as at May 29, 2015 from the former Economic Management Team. The official rate of the Naira before Yemi Osinbajo took charge of management of the Economy was 198/$, but he has taken it to $305. He did not inherit an economy whose annual GDP shrank at -2%, he inherited an economy that experienced positive growth. Yemi Osinbajo did not inherit an Economy with inflation rate of 18.72%, he inherited an economy with inflation rate of 9.6% but he pushed it to 18.72%.

Nigeria Economy has NEVER bled like it is experiencing under the management of Osinbajo. Though we thank God that the Naira in the parallel market has crashed to 415 to the Dollar, but we are not impressed. It is not worth celebrating because we were better off prior to the coming of Osinbajo.

I understand that some sponsored media personalities have been trying so hard to insult the collective sensibilities of Nigerians by giving credit to VeePee Yemi Osinbajo over the gradual rise of the Naira against the Dollar in the parallel market, but Nigerians cannot be fooled to cheer a man that supervised the calamity of the economy from what it was to what it is today.

For the fact that we always blame President Buhari for the calamities that befell the economy (as head of the administration) doesn’t mean that we will exclude those in charge of the management of the economy of their share.

The Buhari led APC administration, which Yemi Osinbajo is a key player has failed Nigeria, especially our economy. We cannot afford them beyond 2019 irrespective of whether it is Buhari or the acting Osinbajo. Both are one and the same, both are flops.

I appeal to Nigerians not to be swayed by accepting below par administration of Buhari/Osinbajo. By the grace of God, a better and credible candidate shall be presented to takeover government and deliver this country from the woes that Buhari/Osinbajo led APC administration has put us.

May God Bless Us All And Bless Nigeria

Education / Bsc In Witchcraft: South Africa Gets A First! by ideykwum: 6:21pm On Oct 10, 2016
While Nigerians spend time and energy condemning witchcraft and its agents, binding and casting them and attributing any misfortune on the activities of witches and wizards » , the South African Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande, has announced plans to have witchcraft included in the curriculum from 2018, aimed at awarding a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Witchcraft.

Nzimande made this known while speaking to representatives from student unions around the country, announcing the move and urging future university applicants to consider taking Witchcraft as a course of study.
“There is a lot we can learn from witchcraft, » like how they fly in that winnowing basket. Imagine if we learn that skill; it will eradicate traffic jams and everyone will just get in their basket and fly. It also means we will not be importing fuel anymore.”
The Minister further invited renowned witches to make an appointment with his office so they can have their skills tested and those outstanding would then be hired as lecturers.
He also invited witches from across the continent to take advantage of the new course, promising them permanent residents’ permits.

ONE of the leading governorship aspirant of the All Progressive Congress APC in Ondo state, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu yesterday lashed the national leader of the party Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on his endorsement of an aspirant ahead of the Primaries.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and All Progressive Congress APC in Ondo state, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu
He pointedly said that ‎with the action of Tinubu he has lost his place as a national leader of the party.

This coming as ‎the National Executive Committee NEC of the Party for second time within a week again postponed the governorship primaries in the state till September 3.

The governorship primaries was initially slated for ‎today but later shifted to Wednesday August 31 before the latest postponement by the NEC of the party.

Akeredolu spoke in Akure during a personality interview tagged ” Heart of the Matter” on Adaba FM station.

‎Speaking during the radio programmee monitored, Akeredolu declared that ‎”for the national leader to have endorsed any candidate in our party he has lost the place of National leader of the party”

He regretted that Tinubu ” has never kept his words”

The aspirants also ‎denied that he was imposed on other aspirants during the 2012 governorship primaries in the state.

According to him ” I was endorsed by God in 2012 , not by Tinubu. All stakeholders decided I should be the candidate.

Meanwhile, the party attributed the changes in the dates to logistic problems but Vanguard gathered that there are more to it than meet the eyes.

Vanguard learnt that a high level politicking was ongoing to douse the tension that had enveloped the party in the last two weeks over the endorsement of Dr Olusegun Abraham by the national leader of the party Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

A source hinted that consultation was ongoing between Tinubu and many of the aspirants on the need to support Abraham to fly the flag of the Party in the November 26 governorship election.

Over 3000 delegates across the 18 council areas of the state are expected to elect one of the 25 aspirants contesting for the position.

Confirming the latest chang‎e in the date of the primaries, the party’s Director of Media and Publicity Steve Otaloro said the new date was at the instance of the NEC of the state.

Otaloro pointed out that the change ” was still part of the logistic problem the party is trying to solve”

He declined further clarifications.

Meanwhile, the governorship aspirants have expressed mixed feeling over the shift of the primaries.

Speaking through their media aides , the aspirants expressed surprise at the decision which came few days to the election.

While Prof Ajayi Boroffice said ‎the shift came as a surprise, others such as Olusola Oke and Alhaji Jamiu Ekungba said since it was the decision of the NEC, they had no choice.

Boroffice spoke through‎ his media aide kayode Fakuyi,Okespokethrough Rotimi Ogunleye‎ while Ekungba spoke through Tunde Olowu.

Source - http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/08/tinubu-never-kept-words/

Why is this coming as a surprise? A leopard cannot change it's spots!! Tinubu has never had integrity, did you expect him to learn to eat with his left hand at an old age?

Like the man said to the other "disappointed" fella, if it had favoured you again this time, you'd had gladly ignored his non-existent democratic credentials and hailed him as the father of modern Nigerian politics.

kahal29:
A factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ali Modu Sheriff, has said he will not allow the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, and his Rivers counterpart, Nyesom Wike, succeed in their alleged plot to hijack the party.

This is as he said he would not withdraw any of the cases he had instituted against the party.

Sheriff said this on Sunday when he appeared on a programme on Channels Television.

He said, “We will not let PDP to be hijacked by a few people like Governor Fayose and the governor of Rivers State. They have a script that they want someone to act, but I am a man of principle. This is not about Ali Sheriff; it is about democracy, and the rule of law.

“I never asked to be chairman of the PDP. I was asked to come and assist the party. I never wanted to be chairman of the PDP. I was sitting down in my house when leaders of the party begged me to come and help the party. Initially, I said no, but I later accepted.

“We won’t allow things to go wrong, the party will not be hijacked. If they agree to carry everybody along and take the convention to Abuja, I am ready to step down today.”

Also Sheriff while reacting to the recommendation made by the PDP Board of Trustees Reconciliation Committee, that all court cases instituted against the party by its members be withdrawn immediately said he would not do so.

Speaking to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday through the spokesperson for his faction, Mr. Bernard Mikko, Sheriff said he would do everything within his power and the constitution of the party to end what he called impunity in the PDP.

Mikko said, “The courts are there to settle disputes in the society. We have done everything within the law to end the crisis.

“We agreed on many terms but not to circumvent the constitution of the party, but the Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee will not agree to end the crisis.

“There’s is no difference between the so-called forthcoming national convention and the moribund one held in May.

“The only thing is that some group of persons who were not carried along then have been given roles to play in the Wednesday illegal convention.

“We will wait for its outcome. Don’t forget that we are going to court on Monday (today) to know what is going to happen on Wednesday.”

This Modu Sheriff is an egotistical dolt! I'm not pro PDP, but his stance in the face of party cohesion speaks of a type of desperation that is more common amongst drug addicts and their ilk, when their drugs are withdrawn. Shame!!

Nigeria's failed sports ministry and government leaves indigenes(home born and based Nigerians unable to participate in International Competitions because of lack of finance, lack of equipment and government support) and so foreign trained, supported by the facilities and amenities and benefits of sports programmes ( sports scholarships, sports equipment and infrastructure and government sports support) in the Developed world who did not make their Developed country competition team use their Nigerian Second CITIZENSHIP to compete in International Competitions for their PERSONAL SPORTS CV and CAREER PROFILE AND SPORTS COMPETITION EXPOSURE to be boosted. Not for any smelly Nigeria.

Its all personal reasons but not evil. Though sports administrators and governments might want to not release funds or divert or withhold sports budgets because Onyibo/Western born or based Nigerians sportpersons who live and make use of the Developed Worlds facilities and amenities will use Nigerians flag to compete and boost their personal CV and sports profile when their Western/Developed country does not pick them to compete in International events

Politics / An Amazing Story by ideykwum: 6:51am On Aug 07, 2016
AN AMAZING STORY...

Here is an amazing story from a flight attendant on Delta Flight 15, written following 9-11:

On the morning of Tuesday, September 11, we were about 5 hours out of Frankfurt, flying over the North Atlantic .

All of a sudden the curtains parted and I was told to go to the cockpit, immediately, to see the captain. As soon as I got there I noticed that the crew had that "All Business" look on their faces. The captain handed me a printed message. It was from Delta's main office in Atlanta and simply read, "All airways over the Continental United States are closed to commercial air traffic. Land ASAP at the nearest airport. Advise your destination."

No one said a word about what this could mean. We knew it was a serious situation and we needed to find terra firma quickly. The captain determined that the nearest airport was 400 miles behind us in Gander, New Foundland.

He requested approval for a route change from the Canadian traffic controller and approval was granted immediately -- no questions asked. We found out later, of course, why there was no hesitation in approving our request.

While the flight crew prepared the airplane for landing, another message arrived from Atlanta telling us about some terrorist activity in the New York area. A few minutes later word came in about the hijackings.

We decided to LIE to the passengers while we were still in the air. We told them the plane had a simple instrument problem and that we needed to land at the nearest airport in Gander , New Foundland, to have it checked out.

We promised to give more information after landing in Gander .. There was much grumbling among the passengers, but that's nothing new! Forty minutes later, we landed in Gander. Local time at Gander was 12:30 PM .... that's 11:00 AM EST.

There were already about 20 other airplanes on the ground from all over the world that had taken this detour on their way to the US.

After we parked on the ramp, the captain made the following announcement: "Ladies and gentlemen, you must be wondering if all these airplanes around us have the same instrument problem as we have. The reality is that we are here for another reason."

Then he went on to explain the little bit we knew about the situation in the US. There were loud gasps and stares of disbelief. The captain informed passengers that Ground control in Gander told us to stay put.

The Canadian Government was in charge of our situation and no one was allowed to get off the aircraft. No one on the ground was allowed to come near any of the air crafts. Only airport police would come around periodically, look us over and go on to the next airplane.

In the next hour or so more planes landed and Gander ended up with 53 airplanes from all over the world, 27 of which were US commercial jets.

Meanwhile, bits of news started to come in over the aircraft radio and for the first time we learned that airplanes were flown into the World Trade Center in New York and into the Pentagon in DC.

People were trying to use their cell phones, but were unable to connect due to a different cell system in Canada . Some did get through, but were only able to get to the Canadian operator who would tell them that the lines to the U.S. were either blocked or jammed.

Sometime in the evening the news filtered to us that the World Trade Center buildings had collapsed and that a fourth hijacking had resulted in a crash. By now the passengers were emotionally and physically exhausted, not to mention frightened, but everyone stayed amazingly calm.

We had only to look out the window at the 52 other stranded aircraft to realize that we were not the only ones in this predicament.

We had been told earlier that they would be allowing people off the planes one plane at a time. At 6 PM, Gander airport told us that our turn to deplane would be 11 am the next morning.

Passengers were not happy, but they simply resigned themselves to this news without much noise and started to prepare themselves to spend the night on the airplane.

Gander had promised us medical attention, if needed, water, and lavatory servicing.

And they were true to their word.

Fortunately we had no medical situations to worry about. We did have a young lady who was 33 weeks into her pregnancy. We took REALLY good care of her. The night passed without incident despite the uncomfortable sleeping arrangements.

About 10:30 on the morning of the 12th a convoy of school buses showed up. We got off the plane and were taken to the terminal where we went through Immigration and Customs and then had to register with the Red Cross.

After that we (the crew) were separated from the passengers and were taken in vans to a small hotel. We had no idea where our passengers were going. We learned from the Red Cross that the town of Gander has a population of 10,400 people and they had about 10,500 passengers to take care of from all the airplanes that were forced into Gander!

We were told to just relax at the hotel and we would be contacted when the US airports opened again, but not to expect that call for a while.

We found out the total scope of the terror back home only after getting to our hotel and turning on the TV, 24 hours after it all started.

Meanwhile, we had lots of time on our hands and found that the people of Gander were extremely friendly. They started calling us the "plane people." We enjoyed their hospitality, explored the town of Gander and ended up having a pretty good time.

Two days later, we got that call and were taken back to the Gander airport. Back on the plane, we were reunited with the passengers and found out what they had been doing for the past two days.

What we found out was incredible.....

Gander and all the surrounding communities (within about a 75 Kilometer radius) had closed all high schools, meeting halls, lodges, and any other large gathering places. They converted all these facilities to mass lodging areas for all the stranded travelers.

Some had cots set up, some had mats with sleeping bags and pillows set up.

ALL the high school students were required to volunteer theirtime to take care of the "guests."

Our 218 passengers ended up in a town called Lewisporte, about 45 kilometers from Gander where they were put up in a high school. If any women wanted to be in a women-only facility, that was arranged.

Families were kept together. All the elderly passengers were taken to private homes.

Remember that young pregnant lady? She was put up in a private home right across the street from a 24-hour Urgent Care facility. There was a dentist on call and both male and female nurses remained with the crowd for the duration.

Phone calls and e-mails to the U.S. and around the world were available to everyone once a day. During the day, passengers were offered "Excursion" trips.
Some people went on boat cruises of the lakes and harbors. Some went for hikes in the local forests.

Local bakeries stayed open to make fresh bread for the guests.

Food was prepared by all the residents and brought to the schools. People were driven to restaurants of their choice and offered wonderful meals. Everyone was given tokens for local laundry mats to wash their clothes, since luggage was still on the aircraft.

In other words, every single need was met for those stranded travelers.

Passengers were crying while telling us these stories. Finally, when they were told that U.S. airports had reopened, they were delivered to the airport right on time and without a single passenger missing or late. The local Red Cross had all the information about thewhereabouts of each and every passenger and knew
which plane they needed to be on and when all the planes were leaving. They coordinated everything beautifully.

It was absolutely incredible.

When passengers came on board, it was like they had been on a cruise. Everyone knew each other by name. They were swapping stories of their stay, impressing each other with who had the better time. Our flight back to Atlanta looked like a chartered party flight. The crew just stayed out of their way. It was mind-boggling.

Passengers had totally bonded and were calling each other by their first names, exchanging phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses.

And then a very unusual thing happened.

One of our passengers approached me and asked if he could make an announcement over the PA system. We never, ever allow that. But this time was different. I said "of course" and handed him the mike. He picked up the PA and reminded everyone about what they had just gone through in the last few days.
He reminded them of the hospitality they had received at the hands of total strangers.

He continued by saying that he would like to do something in return for the good folks of Lewisporte.

"He said he was going to set up a Trust Fund under the name of DELTA 15 (our flight number). The purpose of the trust fund is to provide college scholarships for the high school students of Lewisporte.

He asked for donations of any amount from his fellow travelers. When the paper with donations got back to us with the amounts, names, phone numbers and addresses, the total was for more than $14,000!

"The gentleman, a MD from Virginia , promised to match the donations and to start the administrative work on the scholarship. He also said that he would forward this proposal to Delta Corporate and ask them to donate as well.

As I write this account, the trust fund is at more than $1.5 million and has assisted 134 students in college education.

"I just wanted to share this story because we need good stories right now. It gives me a little bit of hope to know that some people in a faraway place were kind to some strangers who literally dropped in on them.

It reminds me how much good there is in the world."

"In spite of all the rotten things we see going on in today's world this story confirms that there are still a lot of good people in the world and when things get bad, they will come forward.

*This is one of those stories that needs to be shared by all

Very interesting write up. It's actually the truth, but many would come to the thread and exhibit ignorance, bias, hero worship, religious agenda, tribal, sectional and political rascality.

The fact is that Buhari has to ship up or ship off by 2019. I don't insult leaders... but Buhari is tempting me with his conduct.

This man likes camera too much. What's the big deal in visiting a sabmiller that is not even known beyond igbo land while we have Nigerian breweries and Guinness in the southwest undecided

Stop seeing things through jaundiced eyes. The biggest Nigerian Breweries plant is at Enugu.

I'm chatting with a drooling ret.ard. I thought you actually have something upstairs but unfortunately you are just another nairaland idiot.
From trying to put Aigbofa in his place to a spell checker! What a dolt.

I definitely never thought you had something upstairs. The devil is in the details bro...

LMAO!!!

To rub more salt in... the use of "have" is inappropriate. Since you experienced an epiphany about my intellect, your former impression belongs to the past. "Had" is more appropriate. Lol
