The chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Thursday, said the regimes of Generals Aguiyi Ironsi, Yakubu Gowon and Olusegun Obasanjo relegated the traditional institution to the background with no constitutional role.

Speaking in Abuja at a meeting with the Steering Committee of the Senate Constitution Review Committee, he said Ironsi’s 1966 Unitary Government Decree, Gowon’s 1967 and Obasanjo’s 1976 Local Government Reforms Decrees stripped traditional rulers of their powers and gave same to the local government councils.

The sultan, represented by the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, said the decrees resulted in insecurity and corruption currently facing the country.

He said before the 1976 local government reforms, Nigeria was progressive, peaceful, decent and full of beautiful traditions and cultures.

He called on the National Assembly to restore their constitutional powers.

He said the colonialists needed the traditional rulers to consolidate their indirect rule; the politicians, to stabilize their governments and the military, to gain acceptance.

“All the respective levels of governments needed them to maintain peace and security as traditional rulers were always at hand to douse conflict that the police, the military and the government officials could not contain.

“Currently, traditional rulers do not have the constitutional or other legal backings to perform effectively as they’re not even mentioned in the 1999 constitution. This is a great departure from all earlier constitutions that recognized them, and even gave them some functions to perform.

“Indeed, all the Nigerian earlier constitutions gave the chairmen of the State Councils of Chiefs seats in the National Council of State alongside former Presidents and Chief Justices.”

He asked that the constitution be amended to give the traditional institution a unique constitutional recognition, noting that no community or nation would thrive successfully without due consideration of its historical evolution, customs, values and beliefs.

“The constitutional provision should provide for states to enact state laws that cater for specific peculiar matters relating to traditional rulers in the respective states. In addition, the chairmen of the State Councils of Chiefs should be recognised by the constitution as members of the Council of State as it has been in all the Nigerian constitutions, except the 1999 one,” he added.

Responding, Deputy Senate President and chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Ovie Omo-Agege, told the traditional rulers that their requests were “not too much to ask”, urging them to lobby lawmakers at the National and State Assemblies, who are their subjects, for their requests to sail through.

When God sent Moses to Egypt for the freedom of his people, he told him to gather the elders of Israel (3:16). If Moses did not succeed in gathering the elders, that mission may not have been accomplished. Rather than freedom, a destruction on Biafra may ensue among it's own people if there is no unity among IPOB and the constituted government in the East.

2. God may have called you for this freedom mission. However, you must not become God yourself. Anger is the worse enemy of any visionary or charismatic leader. Remember Moses, who struck the rock twice out of anger rather than speaking to the rock as God instructed, what became of him with relation to the promised land? (Deuteronomy 32:51-52; Numbers 20:10-11).

I saw a live broadcast video of yours (3-8-21) in which you made an unnecessary and derogatory utterance "to placing a curse in public" on a Catholic Bishop, if..." Everyone has a freedom to say what he or she wishes, just as you say yours. If the bishop speaks about unity in diversity, that is his opinion. You may disagree by sharing your opinion without being furious as to making such an utterance of disrespect against the institution which the Bishop represents.

A veteran Nollywood Actor, Zack Orji has lauded Governor David Nweze Umahi of Ebonyi State over his achievements in the State.

Speaking at the Ebonyi State Ecumenical Center, Abakaliki on Wednesday during the EndSARS youth summit, the popular Nollywood Actor said
"they are coming to Ebonyi State to shoot films that will be of international standard because what we have in Ebonyi State are of international standard."

He further encouraged the youths who are desirous of building a career in the movie industry to get ready.

IGBERE TV had reported that football legends, Kanu Nwankwo, aka, Papilo and Peter Rufai have adopted Governor David Nweze Umahi of Ebonyi State as the next president of Nigeria come 2023.

The duo were among the resource persons that made presentations during the #endSARS youth summit organised by the Ebonyi state government.

Making his presentation,Kanu Nwankwo, the former captain of Nigeria super Eagles ,said he was highly impressed on the Infrastructural development that has taken place in Ebonyi State under Governor Umahi.

He said when he set his foot in Ebonyi state,what he saw made him to wonder whether he was in abroad,and described Ebonyi state as a "London in Nigeria".

Kanu Nwankwo who described governor Umahi as a special gift to the people of Ebonyi State, suggested that for Nigeria to enjoy quality leadership that will engender total peace and economic development , based on his experience in Ebonyi State, Governor Umahi should be given the chance to replicate his good works at the national level, stressing that the country needs Umahi as their next president.

"Ebonyi State, you are blessed. The country is looking for his Excellency, Governor David Umahi. Everybody is looking for his Excellency. His good works are speaking for him".

Kanu called on the Nigerian youths to develop interests in sports and education, which he said were the major leeway to success and greatness among the youths describing sport as a unifying factor.

He charged the youths as leaders of tomorrow to always work hard so as to become the best in their chosen careers.

In the same vain, the former super eagle goal keeper, Peter Rufai, also commended governor Umahi,for his leadership ingenuity, which he said has marked Ebonyi state out as the fastest developing state in Nigeria, stressing that governor Umahi deserves to become the President of Nigeria come 2023 to showcase his God given gift at the national level.

He commended Umahi for lifting ban on sporting activities in the state and urged the youths to display their potentials.
