Lessons from Fabrice Muamba's escape

Adetokunbo Oguntuga

SIR: It is about two weeks now since Fabrice Muamba survived a major cardiac arrest while playing in an English premiership match against Tottenham Hotspur. It is my opinion that there are underlying lessons to learn from this event. One of such lesson is that Nigeria and its people must cultivate a culture of valuing lives more. Life is too cheap in Nigeria. While other countries are willing to deploy anything no matter its cost just to save a life, the opposite is the case in Nigeria. A visit to health institutions, especially government owned health institutions, is enough evidence how cheap life is in the country. Manned by underpaid and de-motivated personnel, these health institutions have become everything a medical institution should not be. Patients are treated with disdain in most of these institutions.

The attitude of a fan in the stadium on the day Fabrice slumped is striking. Being a consultant cardiologist, he jumped off the stands and rushed to offer help to the dying Fabrice. Muamba was attended to on time. The moment he collapsed, within minutes, he was given two defibrillator shocks, not 'pure water' poured on his head. In the players' tunnel, he received one and a further 13 shocks in the ambulance, not menthol rubbed on his chest. Between the stadium and the hospital, Fabrice was under intensive care. He made it to the hospital just under 48 minutes. These are attributes of a people who value life.

Nigerians can also learn from the crisis management skills evident during the scare. Like the Boys Scout, the major maxim in crisis management is 'be prepared'. There is no doubt that organisers of the English premier league were adequately prepared for such an incident. There was an ambulance on standby at the stadium. Both teams had medical doctors on their benches with the right equipment. This lesson is not just for organisers of the Nigerian premier league but also for corporate Nigeria. Organisations in Nigeria must constantly ask themselves; in an emergency such as a staff collapsing in the office what should be done in the first 10 minutes? Every organisation should have a crisis management plan.

No doubt Fabrice is a lucky man because he happens to live in a country where things work. That the young footballer passed out for 78 minutes and yet came back to life can be attributed to God and to a world class medical care. The lesson here is that Nigerians must stop abdicating their responsibilities to God. They always expect God to come down from heaven to perform the most basic tasks for them. Yet, God gave man brain so that he can think and trouble Him less. The average Nigerian is quick to attribute every failure to God's plan and purpose and so fatalistic that he accepts everything thrust at him in the name of religion.

Sadly, the Nigerian has been devalued and his psyche battered such that every abnormality is seen as normal. And the normal has been made an Eldorado. It is hoped that import of this young man's miraculous escape from the claws of death is not lost on Nigerians. There is an urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of every department of the entity called Nigeria. It is pertinent that the leadership of the country be seen to be working and taking her out of the doldrums. This is part of what transformation agenda should be about and not just a political sloganeering coined by a rudderless political elite.

"LIKE the Biblical Jonah who brought misfortune to voyagers, Prophet (Dr.) J.B. Kumoluyi (General Overseer, The Word Bible Church) too plunged into series of misfortune before sailing to the shore in his pastoral work. Before finally yielding to the call of God, he lost two kids to utter disobedience. In this miserable and confused state, he visited a senior prophet in the ministry, Prophet Obadare who simply said: "What are you still waiting for? If you don't act fast you will soon lose your wife and life should you continue to reject the heavenly call." He revealed that it was then he yielded to the call starting with only four people in a house fellowship in Ketu, Lagos . Prophet Kumoluyi said he had been going up and down searching for nothing and doing menial jobs like a commercial driver and cement seller for a paint company.

According to him, his walk in the ministry was not all a smooth ride as he experienced series of challenges, even at the inception. When the fellowship was barely three months old, he was stabbed almost to death in an argument that ensued over his sister's marital relationship. His act of pardon and forgiveness exhibited towards the culprit was quite remarkable that it led to her conversion. "I started seeing the hands of God in my life in 1988/89. Whenever I prayed, I saw visions and God spoke to me, though initially people who were very close did not believe God had endowed me with such anointing. Yet I could not go back because he who has called me is faithful,"he revealed.

The work of God in ministries like this is not without its attendant challenges; recounting such challenges Kumoluyi stated that during his pastoral work, God instructed him to gather all those who were looking for the fruit of the womb to the mountain, all numbering up to four hundred. According to him, "I announced it and we all went to a prayer mountain in Ibadan; it was a prayer with marathon fasting. I sat on the side of the bush, sleeping and waking up. All of a sudden I just felt a bite. I quickly woke up to check what it was. Lo and behold, it was a snake and it ran away. Within a second, I found it difficult to talk. Before I realised what was happening, my hands and legs became numb. I managed to beckon on my wife. They took me into a room. I was there for 20 minutes; then I heard the voice of God saying 'take water, read Psalm 3 and 4.' From there, I signaled to my wife to read Psalm 3 & 4 over a bowl of water, which she did exactly. After which I slept off.

"In my dream, I saw a white man with grey hair beckoning to me to stand up. But I did not have enough strength to do that. I was just telling him of how I brought the women to the mountain for prayer and I ended up being paralysed. He passed no comment but kept signaling with his hands - stand up. I stood up and followed him until he disappeared. After 4 hours, I woke up and stood up and went straight to the place of prayer. Everybody shouted, not knowing what I had gone through. When we started praying, the power of God arrested two women who confessed saying: 'Why did you bring us to this mountain? Did we tell you that we need children?' These are some of the challenges and to the glory of God too we have a lot of stories of victory and miracles to tell.

"During one of our revival services, they brought a child to the service who had no eye, nose and mouth. I was just praying for miracles and I asked people to lay their hands wherever they had ailments; so at the back of the choir, people started shouting. I asked for what happened and they brought the child. It was a miracle, the organs of the body were all in place, people started jubilating.

"The second was the case of someone who had epilepsy and was healed. I have never seen that before in my life. During the prayers, I noticed a man bending down and so I said they should allow him do whatever he wanted. He vomited something like a lizard, epilepsy. It was a miracle indeed. We had several cases; a boy with a hole in the stomach was about been flown out of the country for surgery but I don't know how God covered the hole up during the miracle hour. Those cured from insanity were innumerable; another case was that of one of our pastors who was brought in insane. He was kidnapped for three days and left insane because of the charms used on him. I prayed for him for seven days after which he regained himself; he had been taken to several places to no avail before coming down to Jesus Christ at The Word Bible Church.

"It's not an easy road, it's very tedious but the Bible says with God all things are possible. I thank the Almighty God who called me. He has been there for me; he has been assisting me to pass through calamities and spectacular experiences in the ministry.

"Arriving at such fame and fortune in the ministry for some it could be well mapped out, but for Prophet Kumoluyi it was not an easy road; it took God and dedication," he said.

Continuing, he added that it all depends on how God calls one or decides to use anyone in the ministry.

"There are ministers of God called but they aren't going to fly; it is gradually that they will reach the destination. Some will start the ministry and it will just boom; some have a very short time. While some ministers are not working for God wholeheartedly, others are not honest, as a result they will continue to crawl but for others that is how God wants it; it is for a purpose," he stated.

Reacting to the issue of Nigerian politics, he said "Time is changing and we are going into a new political dispensation." In his statement therefore, he urged all Christians to pray. "That's what the nation expects from the church at this time- prayer. Christ is the Hope of the nations and of the whole world. If you put your hope in man, you will be disappointed but if it's in God, He never fails. He knows the best candidate for the elections.

"One thing is that I will enjoin Nigerians to vote for those who are honest and responsible to do the work. By their fruits you shall know them. Despite all we have gone through, we still know those that are trying and those that are looting the treasury and running the economy down. We should encourage, emulate and pray for those doing it right. Lagos is a commendable example of such. Offenders should be made to face the law so that others can learn. Corruption is increasing daily but one thing that I know and God told me specifically is that He is coming to renovate this country. God will soon bring in someone who will sanitise Nigeria. God will bring out our own Rawlings. Without this sanitisation, we may not experience the peace that brings riches. God is coming and he's sending somebody. "
