Ok. I was thinking, what would happen if all nigerians started thinking as Nigeria as being their own personal country, not the nonsense about having your own tribe, your own village etc. For example, in the United States before it became a perfect union, people thought of themselves of being citizens of their respective states not as being citizens of the USA. It was till the constitution was passed that people finally identified with the country as being theirs and theirs alone. What would happen if an Igbo man instead of building a hospital in his own village/state/tribe went to Gombe/Hausaland and built a hospital/school/laid pipe bourne water. It doesn't even have to be an Igbo man, it could be a yoruba man/Hausa man doing the same thing in different parts of the country, @ poster guud idea but i no work. Igbo men have been building infrastructures in all parts of naija like no mans business, yet some group of idiots are only good in burning and destroying them. |

Protester throws shoe at Chinese PM in Britai by Robin Millard Robin Millard – 18 mins ago Protester throws shoe at Chinese PM in Britain AFP/POOL – Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao gives a speech at Cambridge University in Cambridge at the end of Wen's … CAMBRIDGE, England (AFP) – A young protester hurled a shoe at Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao as he gave a speech at Britain's Cambridge University on Monday, in a dramatic end to a five-nation tour of Europe. In a clear echo of the Iraqi journalist who threw his footwear at then US president George W. Bush in Baghdad in December, the Western-looking man shouted "This is a scandal" as he interrupted Wen from the back of the auditorium. "This dictator here, how can you listen to the lies he's telling? You are not challenging him," he said before blowing a whistle and hurling the sports trainer at Wen, who had been discussing China's role in the globalised world. The shoe landed about a yard from the Chinese premier, who glanced sharply to one side to watch it hit the stage, but did not appear frightened. A security man moved across and kicked the shoe off the stage. As the protester was bundled out, he shouted to audience members: "Stand up and protest," to which some of the spectators -- most of whom appeared to be Chinese students -- retorted: "Shame on you, shame on you." After the interruption, Wen reproached the demonstrator. "This despicable behaviour cannot stand in the way of friendship between China and the UK," he said, receiving a round of applause from the audience. The incident -- following the protest by Iraqi journalist Muntazer al-Zaidi, who gained global fame by throwing his footwear at Bush on December 14 -- came after Wen gave a largely anodyne speech in Cambridge, southeastern England. Security had been tight for entry to the concert hall where the speech took place in front of about 500 people. Outside some 200 demonstrators, apparently mostly pro-Chinese, were kept at bay in two pens on the pavement. Before the event began supporters waved red Chinese flags, while some banged drums and there was a colourful paper dragon -- although one banner from a protester said: "Remember Tiananmen." Earlier in the day Wen had held talks with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in London where he promised to join urgent and coordinated action to avert a global economic disaster. Wen's first trip to Britain since 2006 marks the end of a high-profile visit to Europe that has taken him to Germany, Spain, the EU headquarters in Brussels and the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland. But the European tour has been clouded by pro-Tibetan protests which regularly target trips by Chinese leaders. China is particularly sensitive about Tibet questions ahead of the 50th anniversary of the March 1959 uprising that led to the escape of Tibet's spiritual leader the Dalai Lama into exile. In London, some 50 pro-Tibetan and 100 pro-Chinese demonstrators gathered outside Brown's Downing Street office for rival protests to coincide with Wen's talks with the prime minister. Five pro-Tibetan protesters were arrested Sunday. In Cambridge, police said the man -- who appeared to have a non-English, European accent -- had surrendered peacefully after the protest. "He didn't resist at all. We ushered him out and he went peacefully," said one of the constables, or university police, who escorted the young man out of the hall. A proctor -- an official responsible for university discipline -- added: "When he stood up and started making his protest, the proctors asked him to stop shouting and sit down. "He continued, took off a shoe and then threw it towards the stage. The constables got to him and took him out. The shouting was legitimate protest but throwing a shoe is something different," the proctor told AFP. A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Police said the man was arrested on suspicion of committing a public order offence, but gave no further details. A University of Cambridge spokesman said: "The incident was extremely regrettable, but didn't spoil the event. Our university is a place for debate, discussion. Can Nlanders do the same to Yara Dua ! |
Safe tower project: Borishade, Fani Kayode, others to refund N5.4bn From AMOS DUNIA, Abuja Monday, February 02, 2009 Chief Femi Fani-Kayode Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Two former Ministers of Aviation, Professor Babalola Borishade and Chief Femi Fani-Kayode in the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo who are presently facing trial over allegation of fraud and abuse of office brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are to refund a whopping N5.4 billion of the N19.5 billion of Federal Government Intervention Fund to the aviation sector. The two former Ministers are to be joined by the former Managing Director of Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Mr Roland Iyayi and the Managing Director of Avsatel Company Limited, Mr George Elder in refunding the colossal amount meant for the upgrading of aviation facilities but which were alleged to have been cornered into personal pockets. The N5.4 billion recommended to be refunded by the two former Ministers, Managing Director of Avsatel and former boss of NAMA is part of the N6.5 billion that was alleged to have been sourced from Zenith Bank without the approval of the Federal Executive Council. This was part of the recommendations of the Senate Committee on Aviation chaired by Senator Anyim Udeh that investigated the N19.5 billion of Federal Government Intervention Fund to the Aviation sector which is awaiting deliberation and possible approval of the Senate. Similarly, owing to the conflicting figures the Committee was given by the various stakeholders concerned, the Senator Udeh-led Committee also recommended that the Federal Government should, as a matter of necessity, set up a powerful panel of enquiry into the N2 billion meant for the payment of severance allowances for retirees in the Aviation sector. The Committee’s investigation showed that of the over 400 workers that were said to have benefitted from the N2 billion, ghost workers were believed to have benefitted from the amount by carting away over N780 million. The report of the Senate Aviation Committee which is expected to be debated on Tuesday, equally urged the Federal Government to probe as well as review the award of all contracts that covered the N19.5 billion. In the same vein, the Committee further recommended that the EFCC should be encouraged to continue with the prosecution of the arrested persons in connection with the N19.5 billion intervention fund in the Aviation sector. According to findings of the Committee, discoveries of actual amount spent on the Safe Tower Project was N1.1billion and not N6.5 billion claimed by the former Ministers and their collaborators, adding that the Federal Executive Council had directed that the monies for the Safe Tower System be sourced from the three percent natural resources development fund and not from any bank. While the Senate probe was going on, the two former Ministers were picked up by the operatives of the EFCC and subsequently charged to court in Abuja. While testifying before the Senate Committee, Chief Fani-Kayode had said that sourcing the loan from Zenith Bank with high interest rate brought a huge financial burden on FAAN and NAMA, which threatened to cripple the agencies. According to Fani-Kayode then: “I have a copy of FEC approval here, the contract was supposed to be funded from the Natural Resources Development Fund and to be paid back in five years.” However, Professor Borishade had denied before the Senate Panel of making any withdrawal from the intervention fund during his time as Minister of Aviation, saying, “When I left in November 2006, the contracts had been awarded but no withdrawals were made.” Fellow Nlanders, is Naija not a money making machine. |
eeeeehe! It has reached the time when naija ppl are no longer asking "why is it that my country has never moved forward". we are now concerned with SA. ![]() |
