Business › US Chipmakers, Intel And Qualcomm Could Lose Ten Of Billion In Huawei Ban by iHart(op): 11:50am On Jun 18, 2019 |
While it may seem that Huawei will be facing a hard with US ban, it is now obvious that US will also be hurt. Some of their big tech firms that have dealings with Huawei could stand to lose tens of billions in revenue. This will also translate into job loses. While coverage surrounding the US government's Huawei ban has focused primarily on how the Chinese tech giant will be affected, it's worth remembering that the company's US suppliers also stand to lose a great deal of money in the fallout of President Trump's executive order.
Now, it appears that US chipmakers, including Intel, Qualcomm and Xilinx Inc, have been quietly lobbying the US government in an effort to ease the Huawei ban, as reported by Reuters.
Citing sources close to the situation, executives from Intel and Xilinx Inc reportedly met with the US Commerce Department in late May to discuss a response to the Trump Administration's decision to place Huawei on the 'entity list', effectively barring US companies from trading with the Chinese brand.
According to four other sources, Qualcomm has also reportedly met with the Commerce Department to discuss the issue. The Semiconductor Industry Association trade group has confirmed that it arranged meetings with US government on behalf of the chipmakers.
While the American chip suppliers don't deny the potential threat to national security that Huawei's 5G networking technology could present, the US companies also argue that the Chinese firm's servers and smartphones use commonly available components and are far less likely to pose a risk, sources also suggest.
Of course, the discussions are just that – a representative for the Commerce Department told Reuters that the governmental body “routinely responds to inquiries from companies regarding the scope of regulatory requirements,” but that the discussions do not “influence law enforcement actions.”
One thing that shouldn't be confused is the real reason for the US chipmakers' interest in the matter, which is to prevent the potential loss of billions in revenue.
"This isn’t about helping Huawei. It’s about preventing harm to American companies," said one of Reuters' sources.
The report also states that of the "$70 billion that Huawei spent buying components in 2018, some $11 billion went to U.S. firms including Qualcomm, Intel and Micron Technology Inc."
Singaporean-owned (but US-based) chipmaker Broadcom has already reported a decline in Q2 revenues and has lowered its expectations for the rest of the year, citing the US Huawei ban as the chief cause. |

kisszhira: They will steal all the money. Besides, even if it will work,it takes at least 2.5 yrs for the best of the oil palm species to start producing fruits. So,even if this will be a game changer(that's if the whole money aren't stolen),it will start taking effect from 3 yrs time. funny enough, this was disclosed in a "meeting", not that it has been implemented. Is it CBN that will stop smuggling or customs?... |

megamart247: https://www.nairaland.com/5244916/cbn-disburses-n30-billion-oil
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Friday said it has disbursed the sum of N30 billion to oil palm producers across the country, Igbere TV reports.
The CBN says the initiative is aimed at ensuring massive production of the oil palms in the country.
Igbere TV reports that Governor of Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, disclosed this at a meeting with stakeholders in the Oil Palm industry, in Abuja.
Emefiele also disclosed that the CBN had commenced investigations into the accounts of suspected palm oil smugglers, vowing to sanction culprits.
According to him, he was under a strict presidential directive that palm oil importation must stop and that his team at the CBN were determined to assist its producers to produce enough for local consumption and even export. Seems the game is about to change https://punchng.com/breaking-buhari-directs-cbn-to-blacklist-firms-importing-palm-oil-42-other-items/President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Central Bank of Nigeria to blacklist any firm, its owner and top management caught smuggling or dumping any of the restricted 43 items into Nigeria. The Presidential directive was disclosed by the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele on Friday in Abuja during a meeting with oil palm producers. |

ify2016: I know that some people are always here to discourage people. Let me tell you guys truth, any year election was conducted, price of red oil always go very high later. Am not trying to make noise here,am here to inform & assure you that price of red oil price will be sold very high before 31st December 2019. I'm telling you from my experience. Buy oil now and store if you have the capital. Good luck!!! It is not entirely true. It will most likely happen when there is complete change in power. Buhari is still in power, the same govt, the same policy. Thing may not really change as such. |

donparosky: Every dealer buying oil from the mill has a trained keg specifically for measuring oil. I don't want to go into details of training the kegs, that should be left for another day. it is necessary cos most oil have dirts settled at the bottom of kegs after two days, so if u buy 25litres from the mill, you expect to have less after refining or boiling off the dirt. To curb this, you train your kegs to contain extra 4-5litres so this can compensate for the deficit. Most sellers will ask for additional 100-200 if you measuring with your kegs. Is 4-5litres possible? Well let's wait for another when you will lecture us on the "can training". Maybe we also look at the risk... |

Price today at oriendu market was #5500. I paid #5800 for mine.
Once you bring your oil and those bigger dealers rush you and take your oil, I will just walk jeje to the owner and whisper to him or her that I will pay #5800. Few minutes the person with just carry it and bring to me. I don't even stress myself scouting and rushing oil. From now till next market day which will be Wednesday next week, the price in my area will remain at #5500. |

megamart247: Those still thinking of going into oil storage in this jet age should stop deceiving themselves. With Presco . Okomu oil,Malaysia oil and the maasive investment some state govts are making in palm production oil price will remain still go below N5k and stay there for long time Presco and Okomu can not serve the ever increasing demand for oil. Despite the huge investment, demand is still high and will continue to increase because population is exploding everyday. even in Malaysia, price of oil is not static. Try to understand the dynamics, world wide the price changes with season. Price can't even remain at 5k for long because cost of processing the oil increases with time. |

There is a gradual drop in oil production, some mills I visited recently don't have fruits to mill. Many more mills will shutdown by July. Next time to have little boom will be September/October but it will be short lived. Price will definitely start going up. I even said end of July but price has started kicking up already. donparosky: oil is officially 7k in Akwa Ibom today. most mills in Uyo, Abak and IK sold at that rate while second grade is 6500. There's no going down from indications. IMO, Abia here I come |

donparosky: the best period she can get something reasonable is October upwards. the rise is usually a gradual thing. yes, like I said "it will begin to go up" gradually it will reach peak sometime later. But don't hope that the price will rise to much oh. Last year it rose from #6000 to #7500 and remained there till this year before it went down to #6000 again. Some even bought at #7500 thinking it will go higher but it didn't. |
