Are we still on this topic?

Personally, I believe Tinubu indeed graduated from the said Chicago State University. However, I think he forged his Waec before he was admitted there.

I think the O'level is the issue, not the Degree

Nothing Atiku can do about Tinubu's presidency. Obi did a lot of damage to Atiku chances and surprisingly, it is still the Obi that is wailing everywhere.

Let's see how things unfold.
Tinubu didn't do waec

He has no O'level result

PoliticsRe: Will Functioning Refineries In Nigeria Affect The Inflow Of Dollars by Ikaeniyan0: 1:12pm On Sep 29, 2023
vanitybutiwanti:
The naira has been on a free fall because of the scarcity of forex, considering that Nigeria as a country gets the bulk of it's forex from sale of crude oil, with the completion of various refineries in under construction in Nigeria won't it affect the flow of forex , especially as the refineries have to buy crude oil in naira, and as a result deepening the fall of naira?

Informed nairalanders please discuss.
Dangote will buy crude in dollars and also sell the refined crude in dollars. But the dollars will stay in Nigeria instead of going to refiners abroad some foreign countries will also buy from Dangote and pay in dollar.

Dangote and PH refinery will bring down the pressure on the naira sha. Last year, we spent about $24B importing refined oil

PoliticsTaiwo Oyedele Defends N5 Billion Funding For Tax Reforms Committee by Ikaeniyan0(op): 12:31pm On Sep 29, 2023
The Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has provided clarifications on the transfer of N5 billion by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to fund his committee’s activities.

Oyedele in a statement posted on his X handle on Friday said the N5 billion mentioned by the immediate past Chairman of the FIRS, Muhammad Nami, covers a national “Data for Tax” project which the Joint Tax Board (JTB) has been championing for over 2 years.

According to him, the project was presented to the National Economic Council in 2022 and was meant to be funded by the federal government and the 36 states.

He noted that the project, however, stalled due to a lack of funds. “Given the importance of the project to the effective reform of our tax system, it was included in the Committee’s budget,” he said.

Over N4 billion still unspent

While noting that the Committee would be transparent in all its spending, Oydele said over N4 billion of the fund allocated has yet to be spent.

“All the expenses of the Committee are properly documented and available for audit. We collect receipts for fuel, stationeries, and virtually every Naira that we spend to the extent possible. Over N4 billion of the said funds transferred by the FIRS to the JTB for the Committee’s work is yet to be spent and very much intact in the JTB account.
“We will be responsible, prudent, and accountable with every Naira of public funds we have been entrusted with,” he said.

Committee’s expenses

Highlighting the expenses of the committee, Oyedele said the Committee’s budget, which has the approval of the National Assembly, include setting up of offices for the Committee in Lagos and Abuja, payment of salaries for the full-time staff engaged by the Committee, travels and other logistics for over 70 members representing more than 40 institutions and stakeholder groups mapped to 6 different Subcommittees, more than 30 Secretariat personnel and over 40 students across the country.

“In addition, the budget covers planned stakeholder engagements with various sectors and interest groups, as well as international engagements and understudy of some leading tax regimes around the world, and so on. The budget covers a period of one year being the lifespan of the Committee.
It should be noted that the Committee was not set up simply to produce reports and recommendations, we are also charged with the implementation of recommended and approved proposals that need to be funded.
“The Committee’s mandate includes ensuring prudence and accountability in the management of our national resources. It will therefore be a contradiction for the same Committee to be wasteful or reckless in its own affairs. Members of the Committee work on a volunteering basis and are only paid reasonable allowances to cover their out-of-pocket expenses as we cannot afford to pay the commercial value for their time, skills and experience. As the Chairman of the Committee, despite working full time on the assignment, I do not receive a salary,” he explained.

The back story

In a rejoinder to a story by the Cable alleging that the immediate past Chairman of the FIRS, Nami, approved N11 billion ‘suspicious payments’ after his exit, Nami had denied approving any payment after he left the office.

According to him, part of the payments he approved before he left the office included N5 billion paid to the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee to fund its activities.

“The N5 billion paid to Joint Tax Board was paid to fund the activities of Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy Reforms two months before I left office,” he said.

BusinessFluenta Completes Installation Of 18 Ultrasonic Meters In Dangote Refiner by Ikaeniyan0(op): 9:16am On Sep 29, 2023
Gas Flare Reduction: Norwegian Firm Completes Installation of 18 Ultrasonic Meters in Dangote Refinery

A Norwegian firm, Fluenta, has announced the completion of work on the Africa’s biggest oil refining facility, the Dangote Refinery in Nigeria, with the installation of 18 ultrasonic flare gas meters on large pipelines around the plant.

The company which prides itself as a global leader in ultrasonic sensing technology for measurement of flare gas, in a statement made available to THISDAY in Abuja, said that the move will help accurate emissions monitoring on the plant.

Fluenta , which has offices globally, noted that Nigerian authorities have recently been leading the charge in the control and regulation of flaring gas and looking towards eliminating the need for routine flaring over the next few years, with a key component in the challenge being accurate measurement. It is believed that the refinery will help the country towards energy self-sufficiency, since it currently imports refined petroleum products for its use, even though it is Africa’s biggest oil producer.

The world’s largest single-train refinery is capable of refining 650,000 barrels of oil per day, enough to meet Nigeria’s daily fuel supply requirements, with daily surplus of 38 million litres of refined products, already earmarked for export.

“Nigeria is positioning itself as a world leader when it comes to reducing its emissions, and flaring – the controlled burning or combustion of excess or waste gases that cannot be processed or captured for productive use – is a safety and environmental practice employed in the petroleum industry to prevent release of potentially harmful or combustible gases into the atmosphere.“Flare measurement in a refinery is essential, from a regulatory and environmental law compliance perspective, and for accurate emissions monitoring,” it stated on the usefulness of the devices.

The statement added that Fluenta spent more than four months working with its exclusive Nigerian representative, Daptem Engineering, and the Dangote project team to deliver a workable, accurate and reliable flare measurement solution.“Whilst it’s not unusual to have high levels of customisation associated with such installations, the wide variety and sizes of pipelines, which ranged from 18 to 90 diameters, presented a unique engineering challenge.

“Larger pipelines make it difficult to measure accurately as the acoustic pulse has further travel which could weaken it and lead to less accurate readings. In addition, flared gas expelled through these pipelines is high in CO2, a particularly difficult gas to measure using ultrasonic technology.“The team implemented a multitude of innovative, bespoke solutions, each considered on a case-by-case basis, to ensure accuracy of the system,” Fluenta stated. It noted that under current Nigerian law, companies refining oil and gas must pay a ‘tax’ for flared gas, to encourage an overall reduction in flaring, underlining the importance of Fluenta’s accurate, trustworthy flare measurement and management.

A Director at Fluenta, Radek Kurkowski, while highlighting the innovative measures to bring the work to fruition, reiterated that flare gas measurement and control remain vital to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to help identify potential safety hazards.“This is especially true at a plant on this never-before-seen scale and with the world’s largest flare pipe.

“Delivering this solution meant some close work with our local partner and the client project team, and we are delighted with the end result – which will support bringing energy security to Nigeria and the wider Africa region.“ Our team used a range of state-of-the-art technology, adapted meter software and special pipe gaskets and ball valves to deliver the pipe flare gas measurement solution,” he explained.

Kurkowski pointed out that Fluenta’s work stands as testament to the power of innovation, creative team work and a desire to always meet the client’s needs.“ We are extremely proud to support the domestic security of energy supply in Nigeria,” he added. The statement stressed that the company has deep experience of working in Africa, noting that in 2017, the it was approached by an International Oil Company (IOC) working in Nigeria, who were looking for a reliable flare measurement solution.

“Fluenta developed bespoke solutions in response to the IOC’s requirements, which were installed in 2019. Since then, the IOC has ordered an additional 32 Fluenta flare measurement meters.“Fluenta has now been awarded preferred supplier status and all flare gas flowmeters on the IOC’s assets have been replaced (or are in the replacement process) with the Fluenta solution,” it added.

The firm boasts of more than 30 years’ expertise in the technology, including thousands of deployments, often in some of the most challenging environments in the world, the statement said.

PoliticsThe Nigerian Billionaires And Tinubu’s Tax Reform by Ikaeniyan0(op): 9:08am On Sep 29, 2023
It has been a refreshing experience, in the last one week, to read very strong endorsements of President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform by at least five major national newspapers via their editorials.

I align with the view of Professor Niyi Akinnaso who wrote, yesterday, in his Nation Newspaper column, that the media should assist the government in achieving its development goals in the overall interest of the people instead of unrelenting negative reporting.

Our country has a chronic revenue problem which left previous governments no option than to borrow. Available records show that we have over N75 trillion in foreign and local debts.

We have an economy that is reported to be the largest in Africa at almost $500 billion in GDP size, with an estimated 200 million plus population. In comparison with South Africa, with about 50 million population and second largest economy in Africa, we are nowhere near in terms of tax revenue. While South Africa has tax to GDP ratio of 27.3%, our country is crawling at 10.86%!

For proper context, the richest man in Africa is a Nigerian and the second richest man is a South African, Johann Rupert. The personal income tax Rupert paid, as individual, to the South African government in 2022 was more than the entire tax collected by the 36 states of Nigeria in 2021.

There are three Nigerians among the 15 richest Africans whose business interests cut across various sectors – from retail to banking, oil & gas, mining, telecoms, real estate, manufacturing, food and beverage, e.t.c. The combined wealth of the three Nigerians on the Africa’s rich list is put at $27.4billion whereas Rupert’s wealth is put at $10.7billion.

Here is the interesting twist: The rich and wealthy Nigerians live in states within Nigeria and do most of their businesses in Nigeria, yet, what one wealthy South African paid as his personal income tax in one year was more than the entire revenues of 36 states in Nigeria.

In Naira terms, South Africa collected N27.76 trillion in Personal Income Tax in 2022, while Nigeria with population 4 times bigger than South Africa collected N1.6trillion in total IGR of states.

Our tax system is dysfunctional especially at the state level. This is why our states and federal government can not fund big infrastructural projects and social services. It is the reason the Taiwo Oyedele-led tax and fiscal reform committee put together by President Tinubu has come at the right time.

The committee aims to close annual N20 trillion tax gap Nigeria is denied within the next few years, by bringing more eligible taxpaying Nigerians into the tax bracket. This does not mean that the federal government is planning on raising taxes. Far from it! It only means time has caught up with wealthy Nigerians would have hitherto evade paying their taxes.

The committee already has its job cut out for it. President is determined to reset the finances of the country to generate the required money to fund real development and improve the quality of life of Nigerians.
