@ Aqva When a clutch Master Cylinder or Slave Cylinder kits starts failing, the gear lever will be hard to shift to gear 1 & 2. When air is trapped in the clutch hydraulic lines or cylinders (not properly bled), you will get the same symptom. A failing clutch cable will also give the same symptom, before it finally breaks. A failing Clutch Pressure Plate (which you referred to as disc) will do the same. A failed Clutch Pilot Bearing will also do the same, since the transmision input shaft will continue to spin slowly when clutch is depressed, making it hard for the 2 lowest gears to enter smoothly. The transmission input shaft sits on the Clutch Pilot bearing, which is located or installed in Bellhousing, at the centre. Do know that if actually your Clutch Pressure plate is the culprit, if you keep using it, it will soon brake or crack the Clutch release Fork, and may damage the Cluch Pivot ball too. Are you sure that the new Oil you put in the transmission, is for the manual transmission of the car? Did you check if the Oil grade is good for that transmission? Things that will cause such problem with your car are Clutch-related, and not the transmission. Unless your gear linkages or connectors fibers suddenly died after replacing the transmission fluid. I hope the transmission fluid didnt touch any of the gear connectors, since oil is a main killer of bushings and fibers? Ikenna |

Aqva: @IkennaI have driven a manual transmission car that had brake failure in the city, then at Awka. I drove it without brake from where it failed in the city to home, during day time. I also know a lot of people that have done so. Your post means you really haven't mastered manual transmission. You have not explored all the goodies the transmission offers. Like i earlier noted, some cars engine braking perform better than others. My 2 cars (both are manual) engine braking perform differently. One is sharper or does better than the other. Ikenna |
If you go out of the factory recommended tyre size, it will throw off the car speedometer. It won't read the correct speed you will be doing. Also, your mpg may suffer too. Ikenna |

You can even bring the car to a halt with this method, without depressing the brake pedal or making use of the car brake system components: brake pedal, pads, calipers, master cylinder, brake hydraulic lines,etc. For example, i can drive on a Nigerian highway, with all the potholes and the overtaking, for good 30 minutes, without touching my brake at speed of 120 km/h, with my manual transmission car. If you understand how your car engine braking is (how good or poor it is), it will help you in calculating the length of gap or distance you give vehicles on the highway, to give you enough space to see potholes from afar and steer out of them without slowing down. I also make use of that before i overtake. I don't follow cars closely when am on the highway. With engine braking, you hardly replace your brake pads and rotors/dics, since you seldom use them. The engine does the baking of your vehicle for you. All you need is to learn how to use it. Is one of the pros of manual transmission. It is also used in the cities, meaning, no bumper-to-bumper driving. Ikenna |

Is it hydraulic or cable controlled? A cable controlled clutch system will be a little hard to depress. Hydraulic clutch system is softer. So, i don't know how hard you mean. Notwithstanding, a failing clutch cable or Clutch pressure plate will give very hard depress clutch pedal symptom. Clutch Pressure plate is what Nigerians wrongly call clutch Disc. If the clutch cable is insulated and got wrongly twisted (assuming yours is cable), the cable move smoothly, which will make the pedal to be hard to depress. And it will make the cable to break at some point. About the gear, you said its strong and not flexible. Is it that the gear lever doesn't move smoothly into the gears or very hard to push into gears? Could you explain more? Ikenna |

How are we sure that they haven't bypassed so many Electrical connections,while trying to detect the non starting issue? You said the ignition has been tested and came out ok. How come you are not getting sparks then on the spark plugs ? What exactly did they test and called ignition ? Your car issue sounds like a CKP (Crankshaft Position Sensor) issue. It would give such symptoms when failed. CKP is one of the Ignition system components. There are other ignition components that will give non starting issues when thet fail. Such as Ignition module, ignition relays, etc. ECU should be the last thing to suspect. You only go to ECU when other components that would give such symptoms have checked out ok. Since you may not be able to manually troubleshoot the car yourself (elimination method ), I would advise you scan the Lagos. Scanning the car in Lagos shouldn't be an issue. Good luck . Ikenna |

Compare their engines and you will notice that American specs are more powerful, durable and safer because if not, the consumers will not buy them. PEUGEOT and FIAT could not compete in North American markets yet people are dying for them in Nigeria. NO STANDARD BETTER THAN AMERICAN in automobiles.Did you bother to find out why or the true reason Peugeot left US & Canada? For you to say they left because they couldn't compete with other brands in both 2 countries means you didn't do your homework well. Don't talk about what you are not sure of. North America? Manual Transmission or Tranny is known for its trouble-free. But that doesn't mean there won't be issues with clutch system, once in a while. globalfanz: Just got home now and discovered that my car's passenger side shork absorber sprayed oil all over its body. I want to buy and replace but I dont know the quality we have here. Or is there an alternative way of fixing this issue.That depends on what car is it. If its older Peugeot strut, its rebuildable. If not, you will have to replace the strut. They may truly have genuine parts. You will have to take that risk to findout. Like i earlier said, am not here to discourage anyone from buying new spare parts in Nigeria. All these learning will surely influence my next car; certainly a BMW I6 preferably a 3series coja.I always admire that car whenever i see one, especially the 328i. I would imagine how it handles. The truth is, a RWD car with 6 cylinder engine, is a pleasure to drive. Its completely different from FWD 6 cylinder engine car. Even though am not a fan of Nigerian mechanics (the clowns among them), I would say they are right for recommending tokunbo parts, over the new ones. I don't know it all. But this is one of the little i know and will explain it, not to convince anyone, but to prove that little i know. There is an Igbo adage that says "Ife di mma 'di agwu agwu”, i.e. better things no dey finish. But in Nigeria, its the other way round. Go figure. The quality of new spark plug you bought 4 years ago, wont be the same that you buy this year. Every year, the qualities of new car spare parts are going down or reducing. If a spark plug you bought that 4 years ago lasted 2 years before it failed, the one you see in the Nigerian markets today wont last more than 6 months. Yes, the ideal choice is the new spare parts. But I will choose tokunbo parts in Nigeria over new parts in our market. I buy new spare parts too. But only for the parts that i cant identify the tokunbo from the Nigerian used new parts, in good conditions. If i have my way, i wont have anything to do with new spare parts in Nigerian markets. Buying them is as good as wasting money, knowing i will be going back to replace those same parts, sooner than one would expect. Because they will fail before you even say Jack! BRAKE PADS: As far as am concerned, the tokunbo is much better than the fake new ones in Nigerian markets. But, I use new brake pads. Why? So that i wont have to be worried about replacing my brake rotors/discs. The brake pads in our markets are like chalk or biscuit. They wear faster or rapidly, more than rubbing chalk on a smooth surface. The tokunbo or follow-come pads take long time or gradually wear off. Unfortunately, it will make the rotors to wear too faster. Unlike the new ones in our markets that are useless, though it pays off somehow. So, thats why i chose to be replacing the pads often, than use the tokunbo or OEM which will take ages to wear completely, but will gradually take the rotors along when going out. Thats my own reason of using new brake pads. But because my car is manual transmission, i hardly use the brake pads while in motion, due to engine brake, which saves the pads for me. I dont know about other brands, though. But the fact remains that the new or Aftermarket brake pads in Nigeria dont measure upto the quality of the tokunbo pads. FUEL HOSE: When i first got my 605 V6 (Nigerian used), i noticed the previous owner replaced part of the fuel supply line on the right bank, with new fuel hose. I knew it was not safe to use such an inferior hose in the engine bay. I decided to change it with tokunbo, which is even more expensive than the new one. But procrastination wouldn't allow me. Until 2 days to my trip to East with the car, this last Easter break, which i would have lost the car because of that hose. I started the car in the morning, left it idling, opened the bonnet, to peep in and see if everything was in place. While i was opening the bonnet, i heard a noise, like water splashing on something, inside the engine bay. I quickly opened it. And there the source of the noise. Fuel was gushing out from that new hose, fuel pouring and washing the cylinder head, tinkling down on the exhaust manifold. We all know what would have happened if i had driven out without opening the bonnet and the exhaust manifold gets hot. Thats how i would have lost that car. Lesson learnt. Heat is their main killer of new fuel hose found in Nigeria market. Once you put them in the engine bay, after a month or so, they will harden and crack. Don't make the same mistake i made. I failed in keeping my Preventative Maintenance preaching on this. ENGINE MOUNTS, BUSHINGS,ETC: A mechanic, then at Awka, taught me how to identify a tokunbo engine mounts and bushings, from the useless new ones in our markets. To know a new bushing, bite the rubber part. If its new, the bitten spot will fall off. But if its tokunbo, your teeth wont cut into it, and will even pain you on your teeth. He wanted me to know how not to be deceived by some tokunbo parts sellers that will disguise the new bushings as tokunbo, since the tokunbo cost more than new ones. Even simple rough idling of an engine will kill new engine mounts, if they are used. Rough idling will make your engine to shake or vibrate, and that is enough kill new engine mounts from Nigerian market, unlike the tokunbo. GENERAL: I do buy and send Peugeot 505 spare parts for some friends of mine in USA, that own 505 too, since Peugeot left US and Canada in 1991. So they have to source for parts outside North America. Initially, they wanted new parts only (Aftermarkets). But when they received the so called original new parts i bought and sent to them. They were so disappointed. Later, they started asking for the used parts instead. I have bought so many tokunbo parts and sent to them and they liked and prefered them to the new ones. One of them, a close friend, called to my attention to a thread where I was been discussed. He told me they were discussing about Chinese spare parts and Nigeria popped up and i was mentioned and discussed, with regards to the most sub standard inferior spare parts they have ever seen. But the summary is: As far as Nigerian car spare market is concerned, tokunbo parts wins new parts hands down, in terms of quality and durability. Otherwise, if you after quality new parts, source for them outside Nigeria. Am not trying to convince anyone to start buying Tokunbo parts henceforth, but i needed to explain what i know about the two: new vs Tokunbo. I hope those anti-rodent poisons you talked about are not flammable. . .I reckon some of these pesticides can cause a fire in one's engine if care is not taken. chucky234: I thought most of these modern cars come with ABS,for a car running 80mph you can successfully apply your break without having to swerve the car.Wrong. ABS does not reduce the stopping distance. In fact, it increases it. The work of ABS is to prevent any of the wheels from locking, hence, the name: Anti-Lock-Brake system. ABS will help you to swerve out of an object without hitting it. But because the sensors on the wheels sense wheels that are about to lock in such situation, and the ABS controller reduces the pressure of blake fluid on such wheels to prevent it from locking, which will increase the stopping distance of the car. Non ABS 4 wheel disc brake car stops shorter than the ABS car, only that it will lack Anti-Lock. Ikenna. |

Any it looks like a long pipe with 4or 5 different mouth pumping out fuel in little quantity to the engine for combustion i guess. but ill get you a picture latter today.Dont worry about sending the picture. I got it now, from your description above. What you call pipe is called "Fuel Rail". While what you described as mouths spraying fuel (mounted on intake manifold) into the combustion chambers are called "Injector(s)". You can google fuel rail and Injector to see if that how yours look. Ikenna. |
gulfer: MY QUESTION IS: WHAT could have made a car engine fall out?FWD. Yes, that could make an engine of such configuration fall off. Am not sure about the Passat, but i have heard of other FWD cars gearboxes that fall off the car. One was actually a 605 I4. By mere looking at engine bay of transverse positioned engine, one will see that the engine is just hanging on the engine mounts. Complete failure of those mounts can drop the entire engine or gearbox on the ground. Thats why i dont fancy cars with transverse mounted engines. But what can we do. Almost all cars now are FWD. But then, I could be wrong. There could still be other reasons for engine falling, that i donot know. Ikenna. |
What a silly topic! This is a type of idea Junior secondary school students have and debate on. Yet, my fellow adults are here seriously trying to prove that the answer to the question is YES. Very pathetic! I purchased my 505 V6 in 2010 with 850k, knowing other modern cars the 850k would have got for me which, not only women would like, but men too. But am a Petrolhead. I didnt give a damn if the whole world would hate me for buying such a car in this generation, because i didnt buy it to impress anyone. Selfishly bought it to make and keep myself happy each time am behind the wheel, knowing the amount of driving pleasure to derive. I was motivated to buy it for my happiness, not to impress any living being. Motivated by women to buy a car indeed! Ikenna. |
Last week Wednesday, I went to VIO office at Mabushi, here in Abuja, to collect my renewed driver's licence. I asked for the price of the new plate, replacement of old with new. They told me 28k. So, even after 5 months of reducing the price to 8k+ by the Senate, it's still been sold as high as 28k? I didn't know i could be that right. Ikenna. |
Yomieluv: i use a brand new Honda pilot jeep,so i dont need to open bonnet.opening of bonnet is for poor people,whose car is malfunctioning.Seriously? Back then at Awka, when i was a kid, dad took his Peugeot 504 GL to mechanic workshop for some repairs. The next morning, he drove off with mum and my brother. While they were still in the street, they saw smoke coming out from the bonnet and yet the engine was still running. He quickly stopped the car, forcefully opened the bonnet and boom! Fire! The opening of the bonnet brought in air into the engine bay and set it on fire. With the help of people that gathered, they were able to stop the fire before it could do severe damage. It was when he came back to house that he told us the mechanic removed the fuel hose from carburretor to get some fuel to wash his hand after he had finshed what he repaired. Probably, he forgot to clamp the hose back properly. So, the hose was spraying fuel on the engine, since it wasnt clamped well, which he would have seen if he had opened the bonnet that morning before he drove out. 3 months ago, i woke up and prepared for work. I entered my Peugeot 505 V6, cranked the engine and it started. As i was about to drive out, a thought came to me " when was the last you checked to be sure everything fine in the engine bay?” So I left the engine idling and opened the bonnet. Lo and behold! The return fuel line, attached to the Fuel Pressure Regulator, was spraying fuel on the intake manifold, from the spot where it was clamped. Hmm! I quickly rushed and switched off the engine. Taking a closer look, i saw that the clamp on the hose had eaten deep into the hose and cut it a little bit. So considering the amount of fuel pressure from that end, it was enough to set the whole engine into fire, if i had driven off without checking and the engine gets hot. I had a similar experience with my 605 V6, when i first bought it, though, from a different spot. Rat! Has anyone ever opened his bonnet, only to discover that Rat has visited his engine bay, eaten off some of the wires and exposed them ( naked) to be touching each other ( positive and negative). Do you know what would happen if you drive off, and somewhere, you have a naked or exposed positive wire very close to the ground or body of the car? As soon as you jump gallop or climp something, the car will shake and the naked wire will touch what it shouldn't touch. The outcome is what i believe everybody would know. I didnt use my 605 V6 for two days. The 3rd day, i decided to drive it to work that day, instead of my 505 V6. When i opened the bonnet, there before me was a rat on my engine. Well, it ran out. But it had chopped off the battery positive wire to the car horn relay. And also the two wires of headlights relay. Luckily, i traced back their sources and reconnected them. Only God knows what would have happened if i didnt check before starting car. Luckily, as i was driving out of the compound, the rat wanted to jump out of the car when it realised the car was moving (though, i thought the rat was no longer in the car). Unfortunately for it, one of the car tyres crushed it skull. How it fell under the tyre, i didnt know. I dont know about you, but i have seen a lot of cars, both new and used, caught fire in the middle of the road and burnt into ashes. No accident, nothing. They just all of a sudden will start smoking. And before you know it, fire! Of course, it is said experience is the best teacher. I learnt from the mistake of my father and have been doing my best not to make same mistake. But you can wait till you experience it before you finally know if its safe to be opening your car bonnet once in a while or not. One thing about us is that we are good at " Everybody does it", so why not join the wagon? But everybody didnot contribute money for you to buy the car. So, everybody will not contribute money to replace the car for you, when you lose it. We can only sympathize with you. So, you can choose to make sure what you laboured to acquire is intact, by doing physical check, other than what your instrument cluster tells or shows you. Or can still choose to believe that opening of car bonnet for checks, if for poor people that drive scraps in the name of cars. Ikenna. |
Amaizu: Sometime ago Sienna in a fit suggested that a mechanic should be shot for an off the mark suggestion.Then i felt he was being too hard on our local techs.Today i really felt the same way.I discovered today that the mechanic who handled the 406 i recently bought removed the air filter in trying to resolve a matter that was obviously caused by a faulty MAF.Nigerian mechanics are a nightmare.Am not sure any 406 got MAF.
