Car TalkRe: I Need A New Car by Ikenna351(m):
JewelStone: Hi guys. I'm a young lady, currently driving my first car, a Toyota product. My car is sound and all, no issues whatsoever, but I'm incredibly bored with it. I want to change it ASAP.

I've always loved Mercedes Benz, but I'm concerned about the cost of maintenance, and fuel consumption.

I don't do much driving. And I don't mind going for it, if I can get a sound one, cos MB gives me joy cool.

My question is, is it advisable for a 26 yrs old single girl to go for an MB product? I'm interested in ML 350 2007-2010, like how much should I budget for it? Are there any issues associated with these models? Or would you recommend another model?

Please help a sister out. God bless
Life is too short to live an unhappy one. Go out there and enjoy it to the fullest when you still got the chance, if you asked me. Because someday, you will look back and have some regrets.

Benz gives you joy, irrespective of your current sound car? And you can afford the Benz, right? What are you doing on this thread then? You found your current newer car boring and you want to jump back to another that could bore hell out of you? Why do we have to trade in our happiness to peoples belief?

I will say it again, Nairaland is the last place to truly really really know if you can afford to own a particular car you are interested in, especially a Euro car. If you really want to know how good the Benz ML350 2007 -2010 models are, go out of Nairaland, google the car online forum and you will find dedicated forums on Benz only or even on that particular car. Go through the threads there and you will be well informed. In dedicated forums, people go there to seek for solutions to theiur car issues. No biased post and most importantly, first hand experience from current owners and former owners. The issues you found there will determine if you can afford to own the car, even if you start experiencing such problems. Also, go to spare parts market where you live, check availability of parts in those markets or check if you can afford buying geniune parts online and have them ship in, if need arises. Ask around where Benz workshops are, visit them and ask cost of certain wearable parts. Find out from Benz owners in your area the good Benz workshops around, even if it will cost more to repair your car there. You can as well check the Benz thread in this Car Talk. All these will help you decide if you can afford to live your dream or suspend it until you can afford to.

Find ML350 (W164) sub forum in benz worl below:

I dont know where you live, but in Abuja, Chicks, not just ladies, pull this particular Benz like its nothing. Funny thing is, I dont recall seeing any of them been towed or broken down on road. If they can be that reliable to those chicks, what then its wrong with the car? That I cannot afford spark plug that cost 5k each doesnt mean another guy cannot. Some people pull 12 cylinder cars, knowing they will be gas guzzlers and not complaining. But Nairalanders will tell you, " Don't go there! The car is not reliable, you cant have savings owing such a car, its a gas guzzler, its not durable, its always breaking down and bla bla blah". But how many of us have seen the key of that car, let alone drive the car? But we seem to know more about the car, more than the manufacturer. That someone you know fail to keep the car running in good shape, doesnt mean another person cannot.

If after checking up the car, as i suggested above, and you think you cant deal with all that, financially or otherwise, then walk away from the car and find yourself another. Doesnt mean other cars are not good, just like it doesnt mean all ladies are not pretty. But then, "Beauty is in the eyes of beholder". Babe, your happiness is in your hands!

melya: Good morning oga ikenna, please advise me, my car 406 ew10 engine knocked down and planned to get another engine which i estimated to cost me up to 170k cos i hv to get it complete with gear box, now my mechanic said he can overhaul it at the cost of 60k, cos I'm not having the 170k for now, so what do u advise me to do here? Some people said 406 ew10 doesn't good if overhauld, so I'm asking you as an engineer sir what can i do, thanks for your support and God bless you
I have no science background. So I don't have engineer attached to my name.

Rebuilding a failed engine is a better option. You can't compare it to a used one: Tokunbo or Nigerian used. Rebuilt one will serve like new one.

On the other hand, 70k can only rebuild an EW10 engine with sub standard parts. Genuine or OEM EW10 piston kit cost about 80k. Not to mention the engine gasket kit. We don't even know the state of the cylinder head, intake & exhaust valves, camshafts, con rods, crankshafts, engine block, injection system sensors/components, etc. Do you know how much each cost, if you are to replace any when engine is opened?

Used or Tokunbo engine is a cheaper option, in summary.

Car TalkRe: Camry Big Daddy Or Peuguot 406 by Ikenna351(m):
MovingTrain: Thanks a lot for the info. I found it educating as always.

Please sir, What engine specification should I preferably go for when getting the 407 putting into consideration durability, security, fuel economy and power?

Thanks
Your "wants" list in a car isn't right. You can't get green (fuel economy) & power at the same time. You have to sacrifice one to enjoy the other.

Anyway, since less fuel consumption is on that list, the V6 is off, because it consumes more when driven in city. Now, between EW 10 & EW 12 (both Inline-4), I would recommend EW12 to you. Why? You will enjoy the 6-speed manual it comes with which EW10 lacks, if manual transmission is your choice. You will enjoy some powers as well, since it possess 170 hp. Unlike EW10 with 145 hp and 5-speed manual.

But, note that EW12 will consume more than EW10. And V6 consumes more than EW12. But in reality, its difficult to tell the difference between V6 & EW12 fuel consumption. Which I always tell people to man up and go for V6 and enjoy the 211 hp the ES9 engine offers. But, note that V6 in 407 comes only with 6-speed auto transmission.

EW7 is out of the picture, since its very underpowered in the heavy 407 (112 hp). Even EW10 do feel a little underpowered in 407, especially when taken off from stationary. But EW12 takes off like wild animal, sometimes, better than V6 at low rpm. The EW12 engine torque at low rpm is very impressive. It behaves like turbo engine, which it actually replaced in phase II 406.

Hope that helps. Good morning.

In case you are interested, in Abuja:

1. Brand new EW10 engine ECU cost N80,000.

2. Brand new BSI unit for 406 cost N50,000.

Also, for the past few weeks, TOTAL Quartz 7000 engine (15W-50) Oil has been scarce in Abuja. Not available in all TOTAL station in town that i checked. But the 1 litre can is avaialble. If you can afford to buy 5 cans the 1 litre Quatrz 7000, then you have no problem. But it will cost more than the 4 litre can. Remember, your EW & ES9 engine takes 5 litres of oil. But the way things are going, the 1 litre can of Quartz 7000 will soon finish in town.

Please, dont fail to the temptation of mixing Quatrz 5000 (20W-50) with Quartz 7000. Because they will tell you at the total stations to buy 4 litre Quartz 5000 and 1 litre Quartz 7000. If you do that, say bye-bye to your engine oil seals. That is, if that would be the only damage to the engine. Mineral & Semi-mineral oil is not meant to be mixed in an engine.

Or you simply buy Quartz 9000 (5W-40) also recommended for those engines, which is fully synthetic. Only that its pricey. 8k for a 5 litre can.

Bossmd: Thanks Ikenna. It is not only the engine that is toast at this stage. I'm also toast!!
My advice to you is try to be bigger than your problems. Because its not the problems we face that define us. Its how we choose to handle them. Issues will always come up. Challenges are bound to come our way. But as long as we keep our heads up, they will go as they come. The more challenges we face and conquer, the the greater or more succesful we become in life. There are people that suddenly found themselves in wheelchairs. They didnt give up because of that. Some, whom were nobody before the wheelchair, became millionaires while in the wheelchairs. Its called "becoming bigger than your problems".

Take a deep breath and think how you can start earning income bigger than what you earn monthly today. So that next time such nightmare comes up, you may choose to replace the entire car or replace the engine that same day without even feeling it.

Challenges bring up opportunities to make us more succesful in life. Its all about mindset shift. Been there, done that!

Car TalkRe: Help-My Car Engine Making A Funny Sound by Ikenna351(m):
Bossmd: Car Experts in the house, please I need your expert opinions on this issue. Recently a very strange thing happened to my car, a 2007 Toyota Camry. I went to service the car at a Total Filling Station, this is actually the very first time I will go to a Filling Station to service the car, usually it's my mechanic that services it for me. So on this day, I went to Total to service the car. The guy there drained the oil and refilled it with their own oil "Total Quartz 5000 20w-50", I was hesitant initially because the recommended oil that was written on the engine oil cap was 0w-20 or 5w-20, but the guy there said it will still work for the car. So I consented and he put the oil in it.

When he finished the job I drove out of the station. But after driving about 8-10km I started hearing a strange rattling sound when revving the car from 2rpm and above and later I saw a very strange message on my dashboard display saying "Low Engine Oil Pressure", after that 2 minutes later the car stopped moving and the engine stopped . I was surprised and at the same time confused, how can an engine I just serviced less than 10 minutes ago be low on oil. I ignored the message and restarted the car , it started and drove for another short distance with the same message still displaying and then the engine stopped again and the car came to a stop, attempt to start it again failed as it could not start again. I just steered it to the side of the road and popped open the hood. As i stepped out of the car I noticed oil draining from under the car, So I checked the oil level inside the engine by pulling out the oil guage, and Alas my worst nightmare!!! All the oil in the engine had drained out!!!. What could be the cause of this? I asked myself, but there was nothing I could do so I looked for a towing vehicle that now towed the vehicle back to Total service station where I did the servicing. When we got there we noticed that the oil filter was no longer seen, It had dropped off somewhere along the road and all the oil in the car had drained out!! The oil filter was not properly placed. S o they refill with another oil. they restarted the engine and it started. But as I drove out I noticed that strange rattling noise like metal hitting metal. I really didn't know what is causing this noise so on getting home I called a mechanic who came to inspect the car, Immediately he started the car and revved it, he confirmed my worst fear!! He said that is a "knocking sound" and that is a sign that the engine can die anytime soon!!!

At that point I knew I was finished!! Now I'm confused, Nairaland please help, I was referred here by a friend to seek expert advice, Please you guys should help me please, does this mean my engine has knocked?? Aaah!! Oh my God, Please you guys should throw in your expert opinions, Car experts here please what could be wrong at this time? Is it something that can be repaired?? I need help!!!
Don't take it the wrong way, what you need first is to go and learn how to be a driver and a car owner. Because that one knows how to steer a vehicle doesnt make him/her a driver. One starts from learning what is called a car/vehicle, how to drive a vehicle and what it takes to keep a car running in good shape. If one has not grasp this, sorry, the person is yet a driver.

You drove off from a place you renewed your engine oil and oil filter. Few minutes into the drive, you got "Low Engine Oil Pressure" warning and you ignored it and kept driving? Do you really in all honesty want to blame the clown that replace that oil filter for damaging your engine, when you were warned before hand by the poor car?

Why I am telling this? Because it will happen again, another new engine or not. Tomorrow, your car warns you off low coolant or overheating, you will ignore it and continue driving, right? Thats why you need to go back and learn how to be a driver. For a start, take a day off and start with the Car Owners Manual.

Anyway, as for your engine, give GAZZUZZ suggestion a thought.

Car TalkRe: Which Should I Go For : Toyota Camry 01 Model or 406 Same Year? by Ikenna351(m): 9:54pm On Aug 02, 2014
tooltip: hahaha!, where is all the food going to,biko.....its not showing, I guess we are alike in that aspect, I have 3 major questions about the 406 car, 1)which model year will be best to get,as I will be pre-ordering from europe, 01,02,03?, I understand it has to be a D9, EW10 engine from the other thread , should I also be scared of mileage above 170,000KM ?(2)please throw more light on routine maintainance and possible cost of major spares,( brake pad,oil type, oil filter, shocks, etc) I heard you mention something about it being pricey and sometimes scarce (3)reliability and fuel economy: car has to be a daily driver, long distance inclusive, can this beast take this on? (4)everywhere I go,I hear 406 electricals na die, please what electrical issues should I look out for or are likely/prone to occur and how can these be COST-EFFECTIVELY checked....lol, I just realized its not a car for the faint-hearted..... many of us are interested in peugout, because you care to talk about it...cheers!
1. Any D9 is ok, as long as it has BSI unit, because not all D9 have BSI. Some early D9 (1999-2000) don't have BSI unit. There is a way one can tell the ones that don't have. But all 2001-2010 have BSI. You need the BSI to enjoy the best security the unit offers. All EW engines (7, 10 & 12) are good, depending on how quicker you want your Lion to be. Mileage is unimportant for 406. How neatly it was used and religiously maintained should be your concern. Difference is that on one with high mileage, the bushings will be failing gradually. Also, if the Lion does not have log book, replace the timing belt immediately as soon as you get her. EW engine timing belt cost 7k (Gates). Check if the idlers and tensioner are ok when you bring out the belt. If ok, reuse them until you can source for them, probably online or outside Nigeria, since they are not available here (new ones). But stated in the EW & ES9 engine workshop manuals that these idlers and tensioners can be reused, as long as they are ok when checked, and they illustrated how to check them. But its ideal to change everything so that you won't go there for a very long time. The water pump is inclusive. The timing belt is to be renewed every 80,000 km or 6 years for EW engine. While for ES9 engine (V6), the renewal is 120,000 km or every 8 years. The V6 timing belt (Gates) cost about 13k.

2. Front brake brake pad cost between 2k - 15k, depending on your pocket and how genuine you want to go. For all petrol engines in 406, use the recommended oil : TOTAL Quartz 7000 (synthetic based) 15W-50 or TOTAL Quartz 9000 (fully synthetic) 5W-40. Oil filter brand is Purflux. We have N500 & 1k filter. 406 shock absorbers hardly fail. So that shouldn't bother you. Though the front ones in V6 fail often due to heavy weight of the engine. A tokunbo front shock absorber cost 5k with the spring. Rear ones hardly fail as well. Genuine new shocks are pricey, but available.

3. Peugeot cars are known for long distance animals. So 406 is not excluded. They are mile eaters. Fuel economy is fantastic. A full fuel tank (70 litres) will do over 700 km, if driven sensibly. Reliability? One of the best.

4. The electric is very good but will give you nightmares the moment you start abusing it, because its complex system, but simple when you understand it like I do now. To avoid the abuse, get a Diagbox (PP2000 & Citroën), a tool designed for troubleshooting and repairing PSA cars. It cost 25k now. If you are interested, I will link you to the seller. You either get the PP2000 or be ready to be paying for PP2000 session on the Lion whenever something goes wrong. If you take it where guess work or trial & error troubleshooting method is used, don't blame the Lion when your nightmare starts, blame yourself instead.

I helped a friend purchased a D9 in 2012. This guy travels every now and then with this Lion and use it as daily driver (only car). Yet, the last time he visited Abuja with the Lion, the only thing he said he has replaced so far were brake pads, battery and the regular engine oil renewal. This car came with over 140k km when I got her for him. I got mine 160k+ km. Now its 170k+ km. But I prefer using others for example, so that people don't think my D9 is reliable because I am technical. But people forget that if something fails, I will still have to replace it. So those parts don't fail as people lie about, what makes them unreliable then?

Finally, get a clean D9 and you are stuck in Lion brand. But abuse it, you will join the club of Lion haters.

*i will be truthful, I think I'll want the 406,but. Can it serve as an everyday car without throwing up unforseen issues?
Please throw in your sincere views
8-15k monthly service? What for? Seeking information from wrong people is what kills success in life. Its like seeking an advice from someone who has failed JAMB several times on how to write and pass JAMB exam. Or someone who wants to start a transport business, seeking advice from one that failed in the business or have no knowledge on how to successfully run the business, rather than go to ABC and Peace Transport company managers to tap from their knowledge on the business.

There were months I have driven my Peugeot 406 V6 manual without spending a dime other than fueling. How much do you think I spend in fueling the Lion? A V6 for that matter?

I have been busy since morning and I need to take care of my stomach now, because nothing has visited it since morning. Lol! Anyway, will try and explain what you need to know about the Lion you are interesting when I am back. But you can visit Peugeot house and find all that you asked for there.

Car TalkRe: 2000 Nissan Pathfinder (Toks) Emitting Serious Heat, Pls Help! (Pic) SOLVED by Ikenna351(m): 3:02pm On Jul 31, 2014
Innovation4real,

You dont troubleshoot a vehicle with viscous fan coupling, exactly the same way you troubleshoot an overheat issue with vehicle with electric fan.

If truly your Pathfinder has Viscous fan, then you ought to have ruled out the fan first, as not the culprit.

That the fan starts spinning as soon as the engine starts doesnt mean the fan is still good.

To know if viscous fan still work or not, try this:

1. Start the car when engine is cold, e.g. first start in the morning.

2. Let the engine idle for more than 30 mins.

3. As temperature gauge gets close to the middle, pay attention to the engine.

4. You will hear a click and the engine sound will drop a little or you feel the car vibrate a little. Thats when the fan has clucthed and start its work. After seconds or a min, you may hear another clique or noise from engine will drop. Thats when the viscous fan clutch has release and fan is free again, even though it will still spin, but not with enough pressure to suck heat out of the radiator.

A failed viscous fan will not do the above.

Depending on your Viscous fan trigger, you need to be sure the problem is not the trigger. Some Viscous fan are triggered electrically and not mechanically. Such ones will have a brush that does the trigger work. The brush will eventuall wear out and will need to be replaced. Another viscous fan trigger type is the fluid type. The fluid usually is on the part where the plastic blades are bolted. That part that faces the radiator directly. The fluid will sense when the radiator temperature is about to get too high and will magnet the clucth and spin the blades. If there is leakage and the fluid dries up, the fan is dead. If dirt cover the surface of the fan, the fluid wont be able to sense the heat from the radiator and wont do its work when it should, hence, overheating sets in. If I were you, I would clean that fan coupling thoroughly with water, incase dirt is the culprit. I know all these because some Peugeots had both electric and mechanical viscous fan trigger in the past. My ZN3J had the mechanical trigger (Viscous) when i first got her. It failed and i converted it to electric fan.

As for your thermostat, its a waste of energy, time and money to remove the thermostat to test if the thermostat ws the culprit. It can easily be tested without removing from the cooling system. But thats for Peugeot systems though. But you could try and see if that helps. Even to test water pump, you may or may not need to remove the water pump to test that. Find the peugeot method in the link below:

http://www.peugeotowners.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=8

Since you have removed the thermostat, dont put it back without testing it in a pot of water.

Are you sure no one introduced air into the cooling system? Has it been bled properly as it should be done? Find out from Nissparts how your Pathfinder cooling system can be bled or you google it. I only know of Peugeot Method.

Good luck!

icemann: Nice cars. Yes you should be proud of what you own. It's the divident of your hustle. So how do you keep em clean with all the mad cab drivers in Abuja that are always scratching people's car?
Thanks?

As for my Lions still looking clean after years of driving them. The secret is, "I craw in on city roads". What you find on Nigerian roads is madness, not driving anymore. An average Nigerian sees driving fast in streets and city roads as good driving. In my case, I craw. Not many people find it comfortable when i give them a lift or driven as passenger while I am behind the wheel. One asked me the other day, "Why buy V6 sticks when you are not ready to enjoy them?".

What people dont know is, the faster or quicker you drive in town or pull off at traffic light, the faster car behind you will go in pursuit. With that, either you hit the car in front if the driver brakes suddenly or the car behind hit you when you brake suddenly. Just like in traffic jam, people tends to move off quickly to cover space in front. The same way the car behind will try to do the same and occupy the space you have left. If his/her car brake is not sharp or good enough, you wont like the next sound you will hear coming from your car tail. Or you could do the same to the one in front.

People always curse me when they could no longer bear my slow driving. They will overtake me, curse me when they close to where i could see them, before they zoom off. Fortunately, because my windows are always up, with sunglasses on and some music keeping me entertained. All I would only see a car that pulled up and the drivers mouth is opening and closing. Lol! Some do give me "waka" (5 fingers) before they zoom off. Lol! Wetin I no dey see for Nigerian road! But the funny thing, these drivers that give me 5 fingers, their cars have lost original shape. Lol! Some would be so difficult to tell which car or brand they were. If not the badge behind, you could mistake them wrong brand or model. The cars have recieved severe panel beating several times that Body filler on the car would have added 50 kg on the car, if not more.

To summarize it, I craw when I am driving in the city/town. But once I hit highway or expressway, catch me if you can, unless i am not in the mood for aggressive driving. And thats what my stick V6 Lions came for.

The King Of The Lions :

1989 Peugeot 505 V6 Automatique

HOW IT ALL STARTED: In spring 2001 I decided that it was time for a new every-day car. With the 505 STI taxed as a classic car, I couldn't use it on a daily basis anymore (German laws...). So the logical (?) consequence was a 2nd series 505 GTI, Turbo or V6 in top condition, and with an auto 'box and catalytic converter. But these cars are so rare over here, let alone 505s in good condition.

Eventually, I bought my dream-V6 Biewen with help from fellow enthusiast Lorenzo Cusumano, who owns a 1979 504 TI and a 1986 505 Turbo. Ludwig does professional conversions of 504 CC to V6 power, so without Lorenzo, my V6 would have been parted out... From 2003 on, this 505 V6 became a pampered summer car. And please don't ask, I am not selling it.

505 V6: Unique combination of power, fantastic ride and beautiful styling.

THE KING OF THE LIONS
: Fuel-injected ZN3J V6 engine, 2.829 cc, 143 bhp @ 5000 rpm (more w/o cat converter), maximum torque 235 Nm @ 2800 rpm, 9.8 s from 0 -100 kph.
My 505, model code A79, was first registered on August 16th 1989, making it one of the very last V6s. The car features the standard front grill (some of the last cars had a 3-bar grille)...

TRUE V6: No less equiped V6 GTI. ABS, variable PAS, four powered windows, cruise control (standard with the automatique), wireless central locking, two (!) cigar lighters, Lordosen support on both front seats, automatic interior temperature control etc. I also got an original A/C which I might fit some day.

TOURING: The late ZF 4HP22 gearbox seems to be more trouble-free than its often said and fits the car very well, let alone the higher torque when accelerating from standstill. The 505 V6 is a great car for relaxed high-speed cruising, which we tested during a 4000 km trip through France (detailed report pending).

INTERIOR: Luxury interior with full instrumentation, featuring even engine oil level and oil temperature. Unique leather steering wheel comes as standard on the late V6

Its well. Just take your time and get what suits you, irrespective of all I said above. Because, I am not the one to own and maintain the car for you.

But whichever car you finally end up with, always remember this: there is big difference between Eater & Lunch. cheesy

FiftyFifty: One more reason I respect Peugeot....
E see! This came from someone else that have tested, confirmed & believed.

Anyway, For BSI Peugeot owners, no remote key other than the authentic one with you can open your car doors via central lock, unless you installed and use aftermarket one.

Also I gathered from Peugeot mechanics recently that if you insert a wrong key in Peugeot car doors, it will enter, but will spin 360 degrees continuously and the door will never open. They maybe right or wrong. I have not tried it. But you all can go out there and give it a trial, if you want to.

So far, Peugeot is one of the few best secured cars in the world. Something most car brands can boost of.

Sphazze: Good morning Sir Ikenna, you are really doing a great work here. Please are there 2003 and 2004 peugeot 406 sedan that come with V6 engines?
Yes. At least, I am very sure of 2003 because I have seen some.

wellscon: Wow.Great jobs Ikenna is doing here. I am a lion owner and didnt know this forum exists on NL.

Now to my question...My Lion is 307 which suddenly developed sole electrical issues. It shows 'battery charging or electrical supply faulty' and after like 10mins drive the car stopped and wouldn't start again. My electrician replaced the alternator.A few days later the same problem happened and LASTMA had to tow at their regular fee(you know what I mean). My electrician suggested we change the alternator belt which we did.The car worked nornally for about 5 days and right now the problem has resurfaced and car wont even start.

My battery was brought brand new in January so I am not really suspecting the battery though I am not completely ruling the battery out.

I'd like to have all the necessary assistance from fellow lion owners on this forum on what to do on this issue.

Thanks in advance
I hope the Alternator spins in the right direction, incase the electrician didn't put the auxiliary belt on the Alternator pulley to spin the other way round.

The simplest thing the electrician ought to have done when you replace the Alternator is to check the voltage with Digital Multimeter. If its below 13v while engine is running at idle, I would reject the Alternator.

Someone once had a similar issue in 406. He was getting the same warning on Multifunction display. Eventually, the cause was fuel pump. I am not suggesting you replace your FP, but saying your car needs to be scanned to be sure what we are dealing with.

Car TalkRe: Camry Big Daddy Or Peuguot 406 by Ikenna351(m):
DjAndroid: Ok thanks a million.
Hey! I forgot to add.

The Peugeot 406 2001 model is a good choice among the early D9. Because you are sure you get one equipped with BSI unit. With that, you are sure the car will always be there waiting for you wherever you park it. Also, you will be sure no one will steal your Engine ECU since it will be useless outside the car. Unlike the Camry that will be increasing your high blood pressure every moment, whether you are driving it or its parked. A lot of people have parked theirs, came back and ran mad a little, because they could no longer see the cars they just parked some minutes or hours ago. Some would park their car in their house, wake up in the morning and found a stripped car. Lol!

Also, the EW10 engine, as you probably have known, is a hot cake in 406. The most selling 406 is one with EW10 manual. Of you find one today, the next day its gone. You may find one now, price it and leave to think about it. You come back an hour or 2 , only to find the car gone, sold! Dealers have even started deceiving prospecting buyers by selling EW7 to them as EW10 because majority can't differentiate EW10 from EW7, since they look alike. Such that even a clean Nigeria used EW10 manual transmission cost close to Tokunbo (foreign used). Unlike the I4 engine in the Camry that suffers cylinder head strip bolt issue that leads to destruction of the engine.

https://www.nairaland.com/1185689/toyota-camry-engine-stripped-head

The manual transmission you seek for in 406 automatically means no transmission wahala for the rest of the cars like. Worst case, you replace clutch component(s), if failed during the ownership. But with automatic transmission you find in the Camry, you will always be scared to travel with the car, because it may decide to give up in the journey or fail the month your pocket is dry. Lol!

Ask any Peugeot owner, not just 406, the last time he/she replaced his/her shock absorbers. Come back and tell us your findings. Even when they go bad, they don't make the cars bouncy, unlike the Camry that seems to bounce even when the shocks are still good.

Note, If you could get late 2001 D9 with 2 buttons remote control, that would be better. Because some 1999 -2001 model have 1 button remote, which you won't find as new in Nigeria. But the 2 buttons are available. If 1 button get damaged or lost, it means no more locking and unlocking doors with remote control, unless you want to go for aftermarket remote control. But it will lose the BSI way of unlocking and locking doors, e.g blinkers won't blink and inner lights won't lit for some secs when remote is operated. Besides, to install aftermarket remote control in 406, it means the Data wire will be tampered. And data wire is a place you won't like anyone to go to. Trust me!

If you decide to go for the D9, you must get PP2000 as well, as you are buying the car. Abuse is one thing a D9 hates (abuse of electrical or butchering of wires, etc).

To be honest, if you know you cannot afford not to abuse the car, then Peugeot 406 is not for you. You can go for the Camry the . Otherwise, it will deal with you mercilessly.

Cons of Peugeot 406.

- Be ready to face Airbag issue, usually caused by connectors behind the front seats. The scan result would always tell you "permanent fault: trigger 1, 2 or both". Bringing out the seat, cleaning the connectors or soldering the wires together, especially the yellow connector and putting everything back will surely cure the problem. On very few occasion, a failing COM2000 would give you that warning sign, but on rare cases, which has to do with loose connectors on the COMM2000.

- Peugeot 406 parts, especially the D9, are very pricey, both the genuine and fake parts.

- Complete timing belt kits are not available in Nigeria. You will only find the timing belt and water pump only. But the tensioner and idlers are not available as new. You will have to go online for that.

-etc

DjAndroid: @ Ikenna, lol. I love the explanation. But is it all about the respect 406 commands, what about functionality as someone mentioned above?
Like I suggested in my earlier post, go through the link I posted. The pros and cons of Peugeot 406 (D8 &D9) has been treated there several times. Just trying to save myself the strength repeating them.

But if you stay in Abuja, you can come to the Abuja Peugeot Owners Meet, hopefully, this coming Saturday, to ask and learn from users, all you need to know Peugeot 406, not just what you want to learn.

filcast: Hey, why all the fighting? Its a happy day!
The best car (and peugeot!) money can buy! The proudest owner around. Bought mine (XU10J4R) in 2009 and have enjoyed every (...well almost every) moment of it and still counting!
But for a nasty collission with a heavily loaded J5 along the Kaduna-zaria express, I wouldn't have appreciated the ruggedity and stability of the Lion. The J5 sommersulted multiple times, my car made do with a 180 degrees swerve. That day I understood the benefit of seatbelt. An act of God though.
The only problem is car is not meant for every road side mechanic.
Listen...I will not sell this car for N2m! All am thinking of is how to restore it to default. Ikenna pls assist me.
One obvious thing in life is this: You can't do anything meaningful without scaring some people. Just like someone said, "if you are not facing any criticism, even attracting few haters, you can be sure you are not doing something amazing". That's how I will summarize this thread.

filcast,

I thank God for your life. Notwithstanding, that's what Peugeots are known for: Life savers! Been there several times.

Lets discuss your issue in Peugeot house, so that we don't derail this thread.
