Bossforeva: every time camry. Have you thought of how boring this 21st century will be with toyota camry as the only car make?Lol! Someone in this section said this recently, "Some peoples life start and end with Toyota". Its all about the "Mind Virus" thing with Nigerians. Ikenna |
SAVEDBABA: if u don't mind a peugeot 505 jst quote me and I will give u more infoAnother good suggestion, if the budget can get you a clean one. But it could. Try Enugu town. There are lots of clean 505 on the road, especially the series II. A lot of 505 owners in Europe, Canada, USA & Australia, who don't abuse theirs get upto 27 - 31 mpg from them, with the same fuel carburetted I-4 engines you will find in the ones in Nigeria. I can guide you on how you can attain such fuel economy, if you want to. I have lost counts of how many times I have travelled with mine since 2011 till date, even though it has V6 engine. With the V6 engine, on journeys, it has been 21 - 23 mpg so far. I could have been getting higher if not because of aggressive manner I do push her. But how could I? When the higher the rpm, the sweeter the V6 songs; the more aggressive I push her, the more smile. The temptation is irresistible. But will try and drive her sensibly next time I take her on trip and see what the mpg will be like. I was at New Parts Nkpor Anambra state last Tuesday, before I drove back to Abuja the next day. I couldn't believe almost all 504 & 505 parts are still available in new parts and very very cheap for that matter. Even brand new single barrel Solex carburetor is there as well, very cheap. Some other brand if cars now converts their carburetor with that single barrel Solex carburetor. You have all it takes down there to own a 505 which is one of the cheapest car to run and maintain, if you wished to. Ikenna |

felixmadugba: Pls suggest another car for me apart from golf2.. Bikonu. I hate golf2 ryt 4rm my childhood..If you hate the car that much, then forget about the car. There should be some level of attraction to a car you want to buy and keep, which you can afford to keep on the road. Ikenna |
Bossforeva: with your 406?Yes. Ikenna |
danadam: As a student, i don't you should be bothered about fancy. Your main concern should be a car that will ease your transportation needs.Felix, danadam is right. Ikenna |
felixmadugba: Unizik havnt change bt we depend on our new gov to do sumtin better. Ikenna golf2 is nt fancy now and is too ugly. Pls can I get anyother car wit dat burget?? Pls help me o.. Is long I hav been savin dis stuff now.. Pls I nid more opinion 4rm u guysUnizik is a Federal School. So dont expect the State Governor to do something about it. He has Anambra state University as a responsibility to deal with. Just go for and get what you signed for in the school, like I did, irrespective the state of things in the School. Don't wish for less problems, wish for more skills. Anyway, Anambra state now has a good road networks. Thanks to the past Governors. So you have less headaches to be concerned with, with regards to repairs on whatever car you end up with it. What you need is a car you can manually troubleshoot yourself, as a student. It will go a long way to save you some cash you will spend on books and the rest. If you end up with high complex EFI car, you will either spend more each time you take it for diagnosis at workshops or you spend heavily buying tools for diagnosing EFI cars. The more electric a car becomes, the more you will spend to keep it on the road. When I think of another good car for your budget, will let you know. Ikenna |
You can get a neatly used Golf Mk II at your budget. Was at Unizik last week Monday. Not much changes since I left. I ended my visit at Admin block, though. Ikenna |
Bit the bullet and bought a Peugeot 3008!
Went to a used car dealer and test drove the Peugeot 3008. Wow! What a car and just loved the way it handles. It was a petrol version XSE 1.6 Turbo. It feels and drives like a Car or hatch rather than an SUV, the higher seat position provides great all round visibility. Just loved the HUD! You can view the speed, and distance to the car in front without taking your eyes off the road. The seats are really comfortable though a bit small. Took a few minutes to get used to the indicator levers being on the wrong side of the steering column. The air con seemed powerful and the sound system pretty much up there. The central storage opens from the other side (obviously these are designed for LHD) but not a big issue. There are illuminating lights everywhere! One even under the rear view mirrors (there is a term for this just don't remember) which switch off after a few minutes. The rear parking sensors, electrical mirrors, electric mirror adjustments, seatbelt indicators (ok I am missing a few standard features) is all there. Now the "pièce de résistance" (pias de resistance as the french would say it), the panaromic roof! I don't know how to describe this experience. The whole cabin suddenly feels so much bigger. I am looking forward to the night time moon roof experience. The rear boot design is really clever. Adjustable floor, the 12v camping socket, the rechargeable torch (now why don't Japanese cars have these features?). Fold the back seats and you can fit a baby elephant inside! The split trunk is a clever design and allows you to slide heavy gear without having to negotiate the cargo lip. I am not sure the Peugeots deserve the bad publicity they get in Australia and without saying too much I will stop there and not tempt the devil. I will review the car a month down the track as I get to know it a bit more. Oh yes and for the record I also drove a Honda Jazz. After driving the Peugeot it felt like driving a 1960s truck! Thanks for listening. .
http://www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/peugeot-forum/113264-bit-bullet-bought-peugeot-3008-a.html https://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a634/Ikenna351/056_zps107fb996.jpg https://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a634/Ikenna351/057_zps3142e27f.jpg Ikenna |

nurey: Please let's talk about the advantage and disadvantage of both, someone has already convinced me the carburetor is a better technology than the injector in Nigerian environment .Lack of understanding of questions is why people fail exams. Ikenna |
elite: ok then. Thanks for the clarification. I shall use the 5w40 this wknd. You are welcome to the family. From the pic of your instrument, it indicates your Fox is among the last model fox produced in Europe (CAN-bus). Ikenna |
I forgot to add, for EW12 owners, 5W-40 will make your engine quieter. The Quartz 9000 is cheaper in the long run, even though it cost about 8k. But it will extend the oil renewal interval to at least 10 months, than the 6 months with synthetic based. Ikenna |
GAZZUZZ: Ikenna you connected your pp2000 to a vehicle that the cooling fan starts up when you open the drivers door? Ahhh you have faith o!Believe me, I was scared to death. But what could I do? It was even when the PP2000 went in that the main signs of electrical abuses popped up. Notwithstanding, thanks for the advice. Will be careful next time. Ikenna |
elite: Ikenna, is the fully synthetic total 5w40 ok for my lion ew12? It tot u mentioned earlier that peugeot warned against the use of fully synthetic oils on their ew engines. I wouldnt mind using the 5w40 if its ok cos I bought and hv been using my lion for almost a month now with the oil that came with it. I wanna be sure b4 touching my engine. Kindly clarify.Did I really say that? I am not sure I did. Anyway, what I am sure I did say was, don't use 5W-20 or 5W-30 in EW12 engine. Peugeot warned against use of those oils in EW12. Yes, I have been telling people scared of V6 to go for EW12 Lions because any Lion with EW12 behaves like wild animal. The EW12 replaced petrol turbo engine in 406 and subsequently in 407, 607, 807, etc. Difference between EW12 & ES9 (V6) is, EW12 behaves like a wild animal while the ES9 behaves like a Beast. Isn't that obvious? Do you really think if 95% of cars on Nigerian roads are fuel carburetted, that this Car Talk would have been created or existed? Out of the 1st 30 topics on the 1st page of this section, how many are not "Help!" related? Even on topics that have nothing to with car issues, someone must jump and cut in with "Help! My car is killing me o!" Lol! I mean, who has never posted "Help me o!" In this section? Even me sef! Check my starting posts and topics when I joined Nairaland. Help everywhere. Lol! Why all the help? EFI system has made almost everyone's 2nd user name on online forums "Help!" If a fuel carbureted engine starts misfiring or rough idling, you simply check distributor cap for crack, check spark plugs leads for leaks, check condenser on distributor for burn, check spark plugs or the contact point in the distributor or simply wash the carburetor. You must find the culprit among these above. But for EFI, wahala! Even with exam made easy called "Scan tool", some faults would be hidden in some sensors or injection components such that it will take serious manual troubleshooting to detect the culprit. With the carburetted engine, fuel pump failure is easier to tell when it happens. You don't need to be technical to know that. But for EFI, it gives similar symptoms other injection components give when it starts failing, unless the person has an expensive pressure tester to detect that. A misfire in EFI system could send you to TB Joshua to find the culprit. But for carburetted engine, even a dumb will tell you the culprit. What about the emission system on EFI. Lets not even go there. Bank 1 sensor this and this and Bank 2 sensor this and this. Bank 1 pre-cat and bank 2 pre-cat. As if that's enough, main catalyst still dey there. They even put sensors to monitor these catalytic converters. What about EGR valve? We are simply not making it easy with these EFI cars for our poor Nigerian mechanics. They have no option than to be performing Circus on our engine bays. Before you tell me fuel economy is better with EFI systems. No doubt about that. But lets not forget few decades ago, Peugeot 604 V6 averaged 20 mpg doing 180 km/h. Now, how many cars on Nigerian road today can give you upto that economy at simple 100 km/h, with their terrible state of their injection systems? You know, Nigerians said "No" to diesel cars. Unfortunately, our roads says otherwise. Because the amount of black smoke that discolor atmosphere on roads is baffling. If all these black smoke coming from petrol EFI cars, imagine what our roads would look like when Nigerians switch to diesel cars, considering this semi-diesels we have here and call diesel? By all ramifications, Nigerians are not yet ready for EFI cars. But then, we cant do without them. Ikenna |
Please, if you must buy a Nigerian used Lion, find someone knowledgeable enough on Lions electrics to inspect or carryout a PP2000 session on the Lion. Its used car, so we don't expect not to find few faults, which shouldn't deter one from buying. But with the kind of electrical abuse some people are dishing out on their Lions, you could end up with such ones. If you stay in Abuja and could get hold of me, harass me until I make out time to check a Nigerian used Lion you are interested in to purchase. It will save you a lot of headache at the end of the day. Even if I am not available, find someone who can help you on that, especially those outside Abuja. Why I am saying this is because of regrets I put some people through when they bring their Lions to me to find out the cause of their nightmares they just inherited from another Nigerian. There are some electrical abuse on Lions which I do find difficult to deal with due to time or even lack of how to deal with them. I mean, recently, I troubleshooted someone's Lion that as soon as you open the drivers door, the radiator fan will start spinning at high speed, with ignition off. I mean, the drivers door and ignition are now the fans trigger. Imagine how bad the wrong connection was and all these are telling on the BSI and injection ECU. The electrical abuse on the Lion was so bad that to even do Some checks with PP2000 on some of the ECUs proved abortive. And the owner bought the car in that condition, not knowing it was that bad. There are other similar cases like that I have lost count. If you switching from Japs, please, Peugeot is not a Japanese car. You don't treat it anyhow or buy it anyhow. Like I have always said, If you know you cannot afford not to abuse a car, don't bother buying a Peugeot. Try another brand, because she will deal with you mercilessly until you deceive another poor person to buy it off you or scrap her. Ikenna |
After about 3 months of unavailability of Total Quartz 7000 (15W-50) in Abuja, its now available in Abuja Total stations. Even last week when I was at Enugu and Awka, it was not there. The price still remain N4,700 for 4 litre can. Remember, its synthetic based oil recommended for TU, XU, EW & ES9 engines, together with the fully synthetic oil, Quartz 9000 (5W-40). Ikenna |

lomomike: Chief, you and I know very much well that most folks who come to Nairaland to review about cars won't get satisfied. Best thing I've discovered, let them follow their hearts. Choose what tickles them. You are right. Some will even be more confused at the end of the day. Lol! Ikenna |
All this Una argument sef! None of you have answered OP's questions. ![]() Ikenna |
When seeked for an advice from an average Nigerian mechanic about a car you are interested in to purchase, he would tell you, "Don't buy car A, because the engine cost 200k to replace, while the auto gear cost 350k. Buy car B instead, because the gear cost 60k, while the engine cost 45k." It may not sound professional, since engine ought to last lifetime of the car. But in Nigeria and for most Nigeria used cars, this fear do come to pass. You told us you are an "income earner", even though I still haven't understood what that means. But I would take it you meant "low income earner". Now, have you bothered to find out how much the tokunbo engines of these 3 costs? What about the cost of their auto transmissions? Which among the 3 can you afford to replace, with your income if one of them fails during the ownership of the car? One of the 3 cars you mentioned, their engines are prone to oil sludge. Meaning, to own such a car, you have to be replacing the engine oil like the current owners do: every month, 2 months or at least 3 months and not more than that. Some people said on this very section that they made the attempt to wait till 6 months for oil change even with fully synthetic but their engines suffered dearly with sludge issue. Can you afford to be bringing out some thousands from your monthly income to be replacing your engine oil if you go for the car with this issue? But then, the 2nd car in the list, the oil change interval can last 6 months or more, without having to lose the engine from oil sludge. One of the cars you mentioned, the owners said in this very section that their engine harness (wires) at some point or mileage will expire. And that the only solution is to replace the entire engine harness and the problem will be gone. Can you deal with that annoyance with your income? One of the cars you mentioned is known for frequent shock absorbers failure. while another car in your list, the suspension last ages before they give up, even though they may be pricey. Which of them can you live with? One the 3 brands you mentioned don't have much mechanics that understand their systems. Meaning, you will have to start learning how to do some of basic checks and repairs yourself. Are you willing to do that or pay higher at workshops each time the starts misbehaving? If you stay in Abuja, visit APO mechanic village. Start from Benz line. Find out how many Benz engines and transmissions are sold from that line on "weekly" basis. Then, go to Japanese line, beside France line, find out how many Toyota engines and transmissions are sold on "daily" basis. Then, visit Honda line, the last line on that market. Find out how many transmissions they sell on "daily" basis. At the end, which of them can you afford to keep on the road from your income? Which of them will have higher cost of maintenance at end of every 6 months for you? I could go on and on, but it wont help you if I continue. So, have you considered the cons of each of those cars you listed or are you carried away with their pros? Have you asked the right questions that will help you know what you are getting yourself into? If you were buying tokunbo, there would high probability that you wont meet any of the cars annoyances until after a long time of usage, depending on your maintenance culture. But for a Nigeria used car, hmm! Only very few were lucky to have gotten a well maintained ones that don't give them headaches. You may be that lucky, you may be not. But you need to be prepared for the worse. I won't sign up for any class that teaches "It's not my Portion". Its no ones portion. You only learn how to deal with one, when God says its your time to handle a situation or condition. Like Jim Rohn once said, " Don't wish for less problems, wish for more skills to deal with them. Don't wish for it was easier, wish it you were better. Don't wish for less challenge, wish for more wisdom". My own school of thought is this, "Accept a challenge, because you cant grow without one". I am where i am today in Auto industry because I took up a challenge I encountered when I bought my 505 V6 and dealt with it. Now, people seek to tap the knowledge I acquired when I overcame that challenge. Like I said, you cant grow without one. Ikenna |
charly24: Its really sounding educative here to hear dis from exp pple thanks all d wayVery unfortunate that you have been infected with the "mind virus" that has become the order of the day on media. Because, as far as am concerned, you have not asked the right questions to be able to make right decision by yourself, not by others. Below is what ought to be your area of attention: https://www.nairaland.com/1904429/camry-se-07-08-infinity#26329842 Ikenna |
youngbilly1: hi pls I need a candid advise, I like Camry SE 07/08, honda coupe 2008 I also like infinity fx 35, I have 1.5m and have been shown both cars, they are nigerian used but are highly maintained.I took my mechanic to check out the cars and they were ok like he said. I don't mind fuel consumption, if not I would choose the Camry so I want to askI wish other members who come to Car Talk to seek advice on cars to purchase will learn from the above post. Asking the right questions, rather than waiting for who will confuse them with the pros only. Ikenna |
Dgame7: Thanks. I tink the climate control works well because I use the AC on Auto mode and it controls the speed of the the blower wen the weather is hot or cold. The problem is just the over freezing attitude once the sun is down.In that case, what you need to be doing is adjusting the temperature to 19 or 21 C, once it becomes to cold. At 19, 20 & 21 C, the temperature will be normal, not too cold. But if you go beyond 22 C, the heater will come on and compressor will go off. Ikenna |
Dgame7: My AC tends to over freeze before the thermostat cuts and it cuts just once or twice den it won't again. It will just be freezing like a cold room Pls wat could be d fault? But dont forget fox A/C blows too damn cold. Each time i travel, I always leave the blower on speed 1, as you can see on my trip to East Last Sunday. But 1 hr into the journey, my hands and mouth will be shaking as one seating in a Freezer. Lol! Thats why 407 owners are swapping and converting their A/C systems to 406 one. https://i1366.photobucket.com/albums/r770/Ikenna4351/WP_20140910_16_37_28_Pro_zps5fe28769.jpg At a point, I had to increase the temperature to 21 C when my cousin wrapped her arms, an indication that she was FREEZING! ![]() Fox A/C is one of the best. ![]() https://www.nairaland.com/1152308/trip-abuja-enugu-anambra-505/10 Ikenna |
Dgame7: My AC tends to over freeze before the thermostat cuts and it cuts just once or twice den it won't again. It will just be freezing like a cold room Pls wat could be d fault?I really dont know much about A/C diagnosis. But I do know that if there is fault in your Fox A/C system, the fault(s) will be stored in the A/C ECU. You will need PP2000 to see the faults. But remember, the ventilation system of your fox is climate control system. Meaning, it works with outside temperature. The sensor that feeds the outside temperature to the A/C ECU is mounted inside the exterior right rearview mirror. So if the sensor is faulty, it could send wrong temperature to the A/C ECU that the outside temp is too cold or too hot. And the A/C ECU uses whatever signal it recieves from that sensor to determine how the A/C compressor works, including the blower under the behind the glovebox. Ikenna |
Dgame7: A friend got them for me from Dubai.Ok. Ikenna |
Dgame7: My fox keeps waxing strong in my army barracks. With my tinted glasses, every officer n soldier just stares at my car. Everyone now wants to drive a fox. That's a clean looking Fox you got there! I also like your alloys. Never seen that type on a fox before. Ikenna |
Op, I strongly disagree with the title of this topic, which will misinform a lot of people. Please, not all cars produced between 2000 - 2014 require 5W-20 & 5W-30. For example, Peugeot warned against the use these two oil grades on some of their engines produced in those years. That the Japs engines require those grades of oil doesn't mean all brand of cars do the same. Peugeot designed some of their engines within the years you mentioned to run on Synthetic based/semi-synthetic, fully synthetic oils , like 10W-40, 15W-40, 15W-50, 5W-40, etc. Ikenna |
