Car TalkRe: A/C & Fuel Consumption In Cars by Ikenna351(m): 2:39pm On May 28, 2013
iykedenis: good day house,

please what could be the problem of my Honda accord 2.0 engine,it uses 10L for 54KM on highway and 10L for 22KM within city, the above calculations are with AC on.OR is it normal
I will appreciate helpful advice.
thanks
In another words, your 2.0L car average 20 L/100km on highway and average 40 L/100km in the city. No, its far from being normal. Its a disaster. Are you running a refinery in your fuel tank, such that you didnt notice how thirsty your car has been?

My 3.0 D9 average 7 L/100km on highway/expressway, while my 2.8 PRV average 10L/100km. Go figure.

Your car is having serious injection issue.

Car TalkRe: Car Engine Thermostat by Ikenna351(m): 2:21pm On May 28, 2013
What do you need 50 degree celsius thermostat for? Is like running the engine without cooling system thermostat at all.

85 degree C is much better, even the 90 C is ok, but i would go for 85 C.

Instead of buying that 50 C t-stat, its better you run the car without one. Because the 50 C themostat wont allow the engine to warm up to optimal temperature. It will open seconds after the engine starts running and will remain open till you off the engine. In that case, its useless in that engine,i.e, its not regulating anything.

I can only imagine a country that 50 C thermostat is suited for. It must be the hottest part of the Earth.

Car TalkRe: What Shld B Done To A Honda Accord Buldog That Xhaustically Emit Smoke by Ikenna351(m):
Lordscrown: Black ɪ̣̝̇ think...
If the colour is black, then it has nothing to do with your engine. Its an injection issue. Even if you swap in 5 engines, the problem maynot go away, since the faulty injection component maynot be on the engine.

A lot of injection components would give you black smoke symptom when faulty: o2 sensor, CTS, AFM/MAF, FPR, fuel pump, clogged/damaged fuel lines, clogged injectors, vacuum leak, etc. Find a place and scan the car, to give you a quick diagnosis.

Its only when the smoke colour is blue that you should be worried. Because, blue smoke means your engine is burning oil. Solution is either you rebuild your engine or you replace it. But for a black smoke, you simply find the faulty component causing the excessive fueling, replace it and the smoke will be gone. Black smoke means excessive fueling or engine flooding, not a sign of engine weakness.

Note that continous use of car for a long tome with black smoke symptom will kill your engine ( the excess unburnt fuel will gradually wash down your cylinders, enter the crankcase, dilute the engine oil and damge the engine). The sooner you fix it, the better for your engine.

WD-40 vs ELECTRICAL CONTACT CLEANER

I have read a lot of argument on WD-40 not being a substitute for Electrical Contact Cleaner. Some maintained that because the WD40 is oily, it would at some point becomes gummy and attracts dusts and cause loss of contacts. That the best would be to use pure Electrical Contact Cleaner, since WD40 is for removing rust and preventing rust as well. Some argued that they have used WD40 for years in cleaning electrical contacts or sockets in their cars and have never had issue aftewards.

Now, where can one find Electrical Contact Clearner in Nigeria? Because am yet to find one and I cant just keep sourcing for everything outside Nigeria. Please, you know a place or shop in Nigeria where one can get the Electrical contact clearner, kindly let us know. I really need, in fact, we all need it. When the time comes, you would wished you had one.

highwayson: Hi, Ikenna and other great people here. please, there is a 406 I want to buy. The seller claimed that the engine on it is a direct tokunbo, that he replaced the former engine. Please how will I know if he is telling me the truth. He said the last price for the car is 500k. Is it a good buy?
Honestly, I dont know. That it has a tokunbo engine means nothing to me. How sound the engine is would be my concern.

Notwithstanding, you can ask him to produce the receipt of purchase for the engine.

Car TalkRe: NISSIAN INFINTY QX4 IS OVERHEATING PLEASE HELP by Ikenna351(m): 5:17pm On May 23, 2013
I wonder why somebody that calls himself auto mechanic would suggest engine replacement for a simple thing like overheating issue, without first finding out the cause of the overheating in the first place. So if the culprit is a failed Viscous fan clutch, will replacing the engine solve the problem? No matter how many engines you swap into that engine bay, when your Viscous fan has failed, they will all be overheating.

What if the problem or the cause of the overheating is a simple thing like a radiator cap/coolant expansion container cap failure, which 2 or 3k will solve?

The worst case that will happen to an overheating engine is Cylinder head warp, which you could replace, unless replacement will cost the same with replacing the engine. Though, i have heard few cases where head gasket burnt, flowed in coolant in the combustion chambers and locked up/seized the engine. If this is the case with your engine, then its as good as replacing the engine. But knowing what caused an engine to overheat should be more important here to save yourself another nightmare.

As for your radiator, dont listen to that clown that asked you to replace it with a bigger or double cell one. I hate listening to that joke, which i hear a lot from them.

I would suggest that you answer the 4 questions asked by lomomike. Those questions, if answered, will go a long way in solving the problem.

Car TalkRe: Help: My Car Is Not Charging by Ikenna351(m):
silica: i currently use a Mazda 626 2002 model. the car has been very loyal to me since i bought in 2010 giving me little problems. however, on Saturday, following persistent some noise from the engine belt. i was asked to drop some water on it which helped in stopping d noise. however, i noticed that my battary was running down. i coulndt use d AC without the car coming to a complete stop. i have changed the alternator twice still the car wont take me through a 10 km journey without running down the battery. what else could be responsible. please help. its driving me crazy. my life activities have almost grounded due to this problem. Siena and other car experts, i need your expertise and diagnosis, please
Water indeed! The person that asked you to pour water on the auxiliary belt, did he forget to tell you what would happen if water enters Alternator? I guess he did not. Water is a main killer of Alternator. What a hard way to learn that. Thats why i always tell people who are always running to car wash for their engines to be pressure washed with water. A lot of people i know have had Alternator failure, few days after washing of engines at car wash. Always make sure you cover your Alternator with plastics leather bag before washing your engine. And its not safe to wash with pressurized water. Hand cleaning engine with sponge and slowly sprinkling water on the engine is better. I would rather live with dirty looking engine than pressure wash my engine. Have never done that and i dont plan to in future.

Back to your issue, few things to check:

1. Are you sure the auxiliary belt (Alternator belt) is connected in the right direction? If its wrongly placed on the Alternator, the belt will drive it wrongly and it will be discharging, instead of charging, i think. Look for another Mazda 626 2000 model, with the same engine. Check how the auxiliary belt run on crankshaft pulley,PAS pulley, AC compressor pulley, Alternator pulley & roller(s). If possible, take pics, and compare with yours.

2. How are you sure the auto electrician who replaced the Alternator connected the wires on the Alternator correctly?

3. Get a DMM (Digital MultiMeter), set it to 20 volts, start the car, place the DMM red lead on the battery positive terminal and the DMM black lead on the battery negative terminal. You should be getting 13.70v - 14. 30v or so on the DMM, while engine is running. If you switch on AC, it will drop to 13.50v - 13.70v or so, but wont go beyond 14v. But if it drops below 13v, whether with AC on or not, then the Alternator is not charging the battery, simple.

4. Is the auxiliary belt well tensioned?

Try these test and get back to us. But others may have better suggestions, though.

Trust me, if i review those 2 cars for you, you may end up not buying any of the 2.

I believe both cars are good enough for beginners. But then, it depends.

I had wanted to ask you what you really want out of a car. But since you have not used/owned one before, you maynot have answer to that question.

I dont want to confuse you. Meaning, i would prefer users of both 2 cars to review the cars for you, then you make your choice.

dBard: Why d manual as against d auto Trans? Plus why d scepticism concerning d 607. Came across ur posts from earlier. Thanks
Because you do not want the AL4 auto trans to deal with you. Even replacement is not a good option. A good AL4 for V6 cost around 250k, if you are lucky to even find one. But there could be some 607 auto trans that are not AL4. But note that AL4 is sportier and more fun to drive than other auto trans, but will give you nightmares when it wahala starts. If you can find someone that can rebuild it for you, then you have nothing to fear. Peugeot wasnt the only brand that used that transmission. Google it and find out. The review of that transmission is not encouraging. But it can be rebuilt anyway. A particular solenoid in that transmission is usually the cause of the AL4 failure. But am not sure its available in Nigeria. I have posted the image of the solenoid somewhere in this thread.

Like i said, 607 is good, but the later model is better. Some of the electrical issues observed in the earlier models were addressed on the later models.

Would advice you go for facelift , 2004-2010. Also, go for one with EW12 (2.2 L petrol engine), manual trans. The V6 607 is good too, but its not an economy one.

The 607 facelift/Restyle, 2004-2010, had a better electrical system, CAN-bus, unlike the earlier model (pre-facelift) VAN-bus system.

Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by Ikenna351(m): 12:17am On May 22, 2013
Sometimes, this can be fuel pump issues, because it does too much work to pump the fuel when the fuel is low. You can observe the power of your pump by uninstalling it and testing the pump pressure with the terminals of the car battery to confirm if it is pumping high or low. Secondly it could still be an electrical issue around the fuel pump relay socket at the boot, if it were w202(i am not sure of w203). If it were w202, this is what you would have done:
Because of the much needed pressure at quatre tank, it may be having failing or partial contact, to test this , connect a wire to the first hole by the right of the fuel pump relay socket(usually no connectors goes through the fuel pump realay to this hole) and extend the wire to the positive head of your car battery, fix back the fuel pump relay to sit on the wire too. Start your motto and drive extensively at low tank and observe if it will cut off again. Good luck
I dont know much about Benz injection systems, but i do know that the symptom the Tommysparks car is having sounds like Fuel starvation issue, usually caused by failed intank fuel pump, for cars with two fuel pumps: intank pump and main (external) pump. When an intank pump fails, the fuel will be cutting off when fuel goes below half tank.

I wouldnt know if Benz or that particular C -class has intank pump, but i would check if it does, if i were tommysparks. And if there is intank pump in the tank, i would simply replace it without carrying out any other test, because thats the symptom of failed intank pump. But if it doesnt have intank pump except the main or external pump, then....

Please, note that its dangerous to test intank pump outside the tank. It could explode. Its also designed to run inside fluid (fuel), which acts as a lubricant for the pump or cools it too.

Like i said, i dont know much about Benz, but tommysparks car is having fuel starvation issue, and the culprit is usually intank pump, for injection system with intank and main pumps.

Car TalkRe: Are Toyota/honda Parts Really Cheap by Ikenna351(m): 1:27pm On May 20, 2013
domack99: It is a common saying that reason why Toyota brand is most Popular among car users (Naija especially) its because the part are cheap and readily available. Trully Toyota parts could be readily available but are they realy cheap? I intended changing from my Mazda brand to Toyota with the believe that Toyota are cheaper to maintain, but Judging from some of my colleagues that has carried out engine repair (replacement)on their Toyota car, i can tell you that most of their spare parts (especially engine parts) are not cheaper than Mazda or other not so popular brands.

I know of two guys who recently have to replace their gear system (Toyota brand) and none of them spent less than 90k for the replacement. Although their outter parts which are the most commonly replaced (thanks to Danfo and Okada) can be relatively cheap compare to other brands but sincerely not so cheap as you would expect.

Please don't let us be deceived by Academic theories using lawa of demand and supply blah blah blah, all those things doesn't really work in Nigeria, only Gods knows what exactly drives our market price.

Well this is from my own view and are based on what i have seen and would like to hear other car users view too.
The above post is more like "Are Toyota cars really that reliable as claimed?"

I have sometime said here that reliability definition differs, from one car owner to the other. Someone might replace his car engine or auto transmission twice within 5 years, but still find his car reliable. While someone may see a simple issue as "faulty starter" as an unreliable car.

How often you visit mechanics; how often you change faulty cars parts, determines how cheap or expensive a car is to maintain, irrespective of how expensive the car parts would be.

Anyway guys,

I have decided to take my leave from Politics section. I have already informed the Admin, Seun. Please, note that it was my decision. Seun didnt ask me to leave or removed me. So, please dont hold Seun responsible for my leaving. Its just that there are things i cant associate myself with, as long as i still breath. Let me leave it at that.

Please, for those who hate me because i was banning them for insulting other tribes and members, please dont. Its for the best. I have met a lot of Nairalanders here in Abuja. I have become friends with many of them. They can tell you better about me. I take my dont's seriously. You maynot see what i was trying to prevent while as a moderator in Politics section, but you will someday, whether am still alive or not. Truth can never be hidden!

Of course, a lot will be happy to read this post that i have eventually left, but its all good, oneway or another.

It was good to serve you guys.
