Olaa said we should be faithful in tithes, offerings etc. You brought up Deuteronomy asking him if we should practice is faithfully as written there. He then posted a devotional(which you say you agree with) that explains how that passage applies today. Simple.

That was the basic thing i said. Your reply should logically border on whether he truly did or he did not. But you responded by asking me about four or five questions on like three passages. i'm not interested.

Candour: I hear you.

That devotional referenced the tithe for the poor embedded in Mosaic law but doesn't insist on a tithe for the poor today, it only advises rightly that God intends us to be generous to the needy around us from our resources. Do you agree?

Numbers 18:21-31 insists on a tithe to the levites and tithe of tithe to the priests. Do you not agree that just like the devotional used Deut 14, the lesson for Christians today is to provide for those who can't do so for themselves because of ministry work? And not an adherence to Mosaic tithes?

Does it not follow that your favourite Malachi 3 is not commanding Christians to adhere to tithing but imploring us to ensure our church groups today (members and leaders) don't suffer want when we are able to succour them?

If you believe that we shouldn't follow the law in Deut 14:22-26 to take a tithe of our increase and use for a real feast at church premises(not spiritual food), why should you be insisting on a christian paying 10% to a church organisation? Do you believe or not that the injunction in Malachi 3 isnt binding on Christians?

If we shouldn't follow Deut 14:28-29 to use all the tithe of the third year strictly for the purpose of charity as instructed by God himself with a promise of a blessing, then why insist on your almighty Malachi 3 to enforce 10% to church or pastor?

That devotional talks of taking lessons from Deut 14 and doesn't insist on strict obedience to the law. If truly you understand and agree with that devotional, you'll never again preach a mandatory or obligatory 10% to Christians.

But then.....
You're not reading what i'm saying.

If indeed you teach that tithe giving should not be by compulsion, then you are saying basically what most anti tithers are saying on this forum.

There is no way anyone will get into a discourse on tithing and still hold unto to the compulsive tithing. Its unfortunate that we cannot trace your early discussion on tithes on this forum but I suspect that both of you came here defending the compulsive tithe but with time gave into to the FREE WILL tithes.
Unfortunate that you are lazy and your comprehension is poor. You're almost always available on the forum so go tracing ehn. We didn't just start talking here this year and you've being spared about six months of trace work already, so do go tracing.
i've not taught doing ANYTHING by force. Even giving your life to God or repentance is not by force. Prayer is not by force, tithe is not, fellowship is not, fasting is not, charity is not, etc. Exchanges have largely centred around stuff like should christians tithe, did Jesus tithe, is tithe only agricultural produce, and such likes. Our stance is very clear and unchanging on these.
Stop lying to change history. Even Mark here will disagree with all that sweet talk about what antitithers are saying. Do you fear God?

StarBoard: Really?
It has now become a case of me misunderstanding simply because you cannot convince me beyond shadow of a doubt that tithing is "not compulsory" according to you?
You really think that those of us who choose not to argue aimlessly do not know what we read in our bibles.
Convince you? Sorry, i do not even know you, neither was the post referred to initially directed to you but to demisquare. i told him that Tithing CAN BE a freewill form of giving. He asked and you asked HOW. In your words, "Kindly explain how that is possible." So, very sorry i wasn't thinking of convincing Starboard beyond shadow of a doubt when i made that statement.
If you understood my statement, then why did you say to kindly explain how? Your question is what made me say that you did not understand, and i proceeded to oblige you with an answer/explanation. On what i 'really think', i'll keep that between me and God. It is not for you to be guessing or fantasizing on what i really think.

The Bible is very clear about tithing in the old testament. You do not need to put out scriptures to convince anyone of this. Tithing in its purest forms was mandatory for the children of Israel under the Mosaic Law. Because you want to advocate for its necessity in an age where Christ's death and resurrection has effectively put an end to practices of the Law (tithing inclusive), you decide to spin it as being a form of free will offering.
i said tithing CAN BE done free will. Just like i can voluntarily decide to circumcise my children or no. There for instance is the command to pray without ceasing. Many christians pray of their freewill. Some other religions must pray at certain fixed times and frequencies. To them, they feel condemned if they miss that prescription. It is not really so with the christian despite the command. That is free will, that is voluntary. Meanwhile some fellows, families and fellowships might practice a specific time to observe prayers maybe family devotion or during church service. This illustration is meant to show/ explain that PRAYER can be voluntary and can be coerced etc. Same thing with circumcision, same thing with tithes. i never said that some people are not coerced to tithe. For those that read me, i've consistently maintained that wrong use or abuse of a thing does not automatically call for disuse. i'm not oblivious that there are wrong practices and teachings on prayer, or on tithe, or baptism, or on virtually every christian subject. What i'm particular about is what does the Bible say, not what sentiments say. Does the Bible say not to tithe etc. Again, i'm tired already of all these tithe talk, especially as it is the usual circles, and often involving the usual suspects and threads. Most of what you may say or ask has already being said and answered on this very thread and its sister threads.
You'll have to forgive me, i might ignore further discussions expect where i see necessary. i do not have such unenviable ministry of tithetalks, and it removes nothing from me if the whole world don't tithe.

you must think we are illiterates here.
A command compels you to do something, irrespective of your state of mind or disposition to that issue.
The irony in the above is there for all to see. If you really believe the above, then I am not sure how best to reply you.
Maybe its just this post, but i think your mind reading skills are v.poor. Stop trying to look into my thoughts.

Exo 35:4 And Moses spoke unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the LORD commanded, saying,
Exo 35:5 Take ye from among you an offering unto the LORD: whosoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, an offering of the LORD; gold, and silver, and brass,
Exo 35:10 And every wise hearted among you shall come, and make all that the LORD hath commanded

It is as clear as clear, the Lord COMMANDED(verse 4 and 10). Verse 5 shows the WILLING heart. This is a COMMAND for a WILLING offering. You don't want us writing this in Hausa or Ibibio for clearer understanding, do you?

I attend the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
For me to serve in any of the ministry arms(i.e. a worker), I MUST be a tither, proven with records of payment. It is one of the criteria.
How is that free will giving? Is that not extortion by blackmail?
Sorry, i'm not here to speak for or against your church. The truth remains that Tithing can be given willingly irrespective of what your church thinks or practices.

Oga please park well.
You are not talking to children in the Sunday School.
You know what freewill offering means.
All this talk to justify a position that doesn't require any kind of justification is not necessary.
cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy This is the one they call "laugh and go". that's what i should just do, really. i gave you two Bible passages where a specified command was done freewill.
-Those passages(Exodus 35 and Leviticus 1) are Old Testament Bible commands, the command to tithe is also found in the Bible.
-The commands were specific, bring gold, and silver, and brass, blue, purple, scarlet, fine linen, goats' hair, cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock without blemish. He shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted. Tithing is specific, bring a tenth.
-Despite those two passages being commands and specific, the people still gave voluntarily of their free will even in the OT. How much more in the New Testament period of grace. Yet in all their willing voluntary cheerfulness, they couldn't go bring elephant or snake head, or limestone, or fish scales. They even had to put the hand on the head of the burnt offering for it to be accepted. And on and on. Permit me to stop here. If you do not understand what i've said in many words, good luck with whatever you do. i understand you are not a child, however do remember that that is an essential quality required in the Kingdom.

DrummaBoy: Question:

Was the command for free will giving a command to give tithes?

Where did God COMMAND tithes to be given as FREE WILL in the old testament?
You throw out context, comprehension and honesty when you ask these things. Or perhaps you lack the ability to follow through a proper discussion or line of reasoning. What i said was that "Tithing DOES NOT HAVE TO BE coerced" here.
Demisquare asked ïf tithing is a free will form of giving to which i replied that Tithing CAN BE a freewill form of giving. That's here. then demisquare, dorox and starboard asked HOW. That was the context and the explanation given. The explanations are clear enough to show how COMMANDS were obeyed FREE WILL or VOLUNTARILY. When you leave the HOW(the context and subject of that discuss) and deceptively/fallaciously ignore that and go on about WHERE, again its either you are being dishonest or simply lack ability to follow through in comprehension.

Is this passage, which you are quoting, not lending support to our position that God’s demand or even command on the Christian is to give free will and not obligatory tithing?
Are you saying that Exodus 35 shows us that the Christian is to give free will and not obligatory tithing? If yes, then you are being selective. The passage makes no tithing comparisons but simply shows some people who gave of their free will despite it being a SPECIFIED command.

Can you see from this passage that God saw that Israel had gold, silver and bronze but never requested them to tithe in those? Rather he requested his tithes to be agricultural products? Why then do you call tithes money?
You have decided to see what you want to see. The passage talked about requirements for BUILDING THE TABERNACLE. Stop comparing apples with fishes. Tithes is from your income, and the average consistent income then was agricultural produce. Money is a medium of exchange, a measure of the value of goods and services. It is myopic and narrow minded to think/limit money historically to paper money.

While your point about God commanding a free will offering is understood, you clearly are being economical with the truth if you claim modern day tithing is taught as free will giving. It certainly is not.
So you were operating in dishonesty since you claim to have understood my point. The rest of your statement makes no sense. It is either something is clear or it is not. You can't refer to my statement as CLEAR and in the same breath give conditional IFs. Again, i didn't claim modern day tithing is taught as free will giving. i said "Tithing DOES NOT HAVE TO BE coerced", and that "Tithing CAN BE a freewill form of giving."
Always take note of capital letters, bold statements, coloured sentences/phrases and other such emphasis. They are not designs or artwork.

Let me tell you why this analogy is not true.

The reason anti tithers take the position they take against tithing is because of the way and manner tithes are generally taught and practiced in our churches.

Now after years of debating this topic, you have now found a safe haven in calling tithes "free will giving"; good for you. It shows we are making progress. But those pastors out there do not agree with you.
Again, you take us many steps backward. i'm not here to know your reasons for your positions. i'm here for the truth of God's Word. Let God be true and every man a liar. Tithes have always being done free will as evidenced in the first recorded tithe in Scriptures. It is not a new thing or haven. i thought i was clear on the "ought to" positionS of the new testament a while ago.

Permit me to relay my story again (though you hate to hear it).

I decided to stop tithing March last year. The church I attended will boast of some 1,500 members. I had some 300 of them on my Facebook. After a few months of silence, one day in July or so I posted something on my wall to say in effect I no longer tithe. It generated some debate bc I no be small person for church.

One day my wife returns home to inform me if I have read the conditions to be s true member of the church? I had but maybe not paid attention to details. The last item said "you MUST be a FAITHFUL tither to be a member of the church". I knew I was in trouble.

Long story short, I had to leave the church eventually.

What is free will giving in that?

My guy forget semantics. In the real world where tithing is practiced most of these churches expect you to PAY your tithe: you owe it to God and to them, that's what they teach. That's what we oppose.
i'm not led by your personal experiences. i endeavour to live my life through a personal relationship with God. My decisions to tithe is neither because of beautiful experiences and testimonies of tithe givers and preachers(which abound aplenty), nor is it because of frustrations of disgruntled church members. Remember that, i thought that was clear enough in the other discussion thread some time ago.

StarBoard: You just told a barefaced lie.

Something that was commanded in the Law suddenly turns into free-will? Kindly explain how that is possible.

Please desist from this inconsistency.
If you cannot defend a position, stop dribbling around it.
There was nothing inconsistent in what i said. That you do not understand it doesn't mean it is inconsistent. Your post is what is inconsistent as it oscillates between a polite question and a rude jeer. Sorry, i might not answer every question posed here as that has been done severalLY both on this thread and on it's sister threads in the past.
i'll give you at least TWO witnesses/passages as in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

PASSAGE WITNESS 1.
This passage is a COMMAND for a WILLING offering. That is how it is possible to have a command for freewill. If you're familiar with the passage, this should suffice. Every man brought and were regarded as the wise hearted ones. Bible definition of free will.

PASSAGE WITNESS 2.
Lev 1:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.
Lev 1:3 If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD.
Here is another voluntary will or free will offering. that something is free will does not mean that it can not be specified. For instance, even though the offering was free will, they could not bring a dog, or a cattle that had blemish. They still had some other protocol and specifications to follow before the offering would be ACCEPTED by God or even by the priests. Freewill is not exactly 'anything i feel like'. At least, not always that definition. If you noticed the 1st passage too, God had specific demands for the tabernacle, yet the people gave willingly. That is how it is possible to give a command willingly.
Christianity Etc › Re: Tithes And Offerings by Image123(m): 6:09pm On Jul 24, 2014
dorox: Tithe is like tax, it is an obligation you are required to comply with irrespective of whether you like to or not. Failure to pay it instany makes you a thief for depriving the authorities that part of your income that is legally theirs. The option available to everyone in subjection to the tax/tithe collecting authority is quite clear and unambiguous; pay up or become a criminal.
Free will giving is entirely different in the sense that you are not obligated to pay by an authority, it is a charitable contribution borne out love for a project that concerns you. So your not contributing to the running of a local orphanage doesn't make you a criminal or a bad person, same with not making donations to a soup kitchen or your church. You do it because of the joy you get from being helpful to others, and not out of compulsion. That is what free willed giving is.
Stop trying to obfuscate the meaning of free will giving when we know that under the old covenant, to tithe was an obligation that wasn't subject to personal needs or feelings.
This thread is on the 111th page. i'll like to think that you have done a fair reading through. Most of the questions asked or to be asked have ALREADY being answered. It is why it becomes cumbersome to re-answer them again and again, especially when it is the same people or place that the question is presented by or in. Oh, forget demisquare by the way. If that fellow told me that my username is "shdemidemi123", i would not go out of my way to disagree with him. He has that 'gift' of pulling a lot of wool as it were.

The key to your query is in your words "under the old covenant". We are NOT UNDER the law, or UNDER the Old Covenant. Under the New Covenant, tithe CAN BE a freewill form of giving. i'll explain with analogy, then in my next post with scriptures.
Under the old covenant, CIRCUMCISION was "coerced"(if that is the proper word to use). However, today under grace, i can physically circumcise my child, and i can choose not to. The fact that it was obligatory under the old Covenant doesn't mean that it cannot be done freewill today.
i can choose today to observe the sabbath as best as i can, whether on Saturday or any day. Can choose not to do any work, worship God and whatever else sabbatical that can be done.

You're an inconsistent hypocrite. Just some days ago, you said that tithe was nothing on that Word of faith thread you're active in. Now, it's the biggest fraud. Get your acts right.
DrummaBoy: Thank you Alexleo for understanding.

Let me invite you to our WOF thread where I just did a summary/index of the discussions we have been having on that thread, that will permit ease of navigation on the thread

https://www.nairaland.com/1790500/word-faith-movements-doctrine-proponents#24330864

One thing I have learnt from that thread is that tithing is the least of the problems of the church today. We have only discussed 7 of 20 topics and the revelations are damning.

If people will keep tithing but unlearn the falsehood being unveiled on that thread, I will be content. But truth is there is all likelihood that when men unlearn these things, the tithe falsehood will also disappear.

Lastly, in the proposed text I made available for the tract, I suggested a condition where tithing can be acceptable, I will find it now and just cut and paste here. I say this so that you wont think that I feel tithing is such a great evil. What I detest about it is the compulsion its been made into today and the fact that a corrupt clergy system thrives on it.

shdemidemi: How can it be freewill when curses and blessings are attached to it?
i'm not interested in talking to you. i have seen the future, lol.
Freewill has little or nothing to do with blessings and curses. i doubt you know the meaning of freewill, again i'm not interested.
