Mark Miwerds: I understood you perfectly well.

A covenant is an agreement between two individuals.

In order for me to make an agreement on tithing with God, I must first be given the conditions that God wants me to meet. I cannot agree with something that God never told me to do.

Now, I ask again.... show us where in Scripture where God endears, endorses, or enters into this "agreement," to accept monetary tithes?
You should have seen where i said a child CAN make an agreement with the Father(like is done in a vow). God has not rejected the tithe of all things, how you fail to see this basic fact is questionable.
Christianity Etc › What Is The New Covenant, And What Is The Old Covenant? by Image123(op): 1:24am On Nov 05, 2013
There is a sad dearth of understanding as to what the new covenant is, or what the old covenant is. The understanding of the covenant is important and i dare say foundational to christian life, understanding and doctrine. i believe a lack of understanding of what the new covenant is, has led to the bulk of controversy in christendom today. What is the new covenant, and what is the old covenant?
Would love if each could explain in personal words, your own expressions, instead of throwing in links, jabs and likes.

Mark Miwerds: Fine. Now, show us where in Scripture where God endears, endorses, or enters into this "agreement," to accept monetary tithes?
Seems you did not read me well, are you delirious? here it is again.

A covenant is simply an agreement. Any child of God can make an agreement with the heavenly Father based on relationship. That is what is meant by covenant practice. God does not have just two covenants or agreements, even in the Bible.

pickabeau1: I stil dont believe it is appropriate for a man of the cloth to have an inordinate ambition to gather material possessions

The crave to have name and fame (known as the pastors who prayed for Jona/YarAdua) or multi billion auditoriums is at variance with the meekness and humility preached by the Master

He lived a life of compassion not extorting from the flock and then saying you did not use their money or sweat to arrive where you are

Even Oritse had to clamour for jet when he saw he was being left out
i do not believe any christian should have an inordinate ambition to gather material possession. i do not know of this crave and clamour that you speak. We are talking about tithes and offerings and its biblical relationship. We do not support abuse of anything too, whether tithes or offerings or prayers or deliverance or baptism or whatever. Do you believe this scripture below?
Luke 18:27 And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.

Mark Miwerds: Covenant practice?

Where in the Bible does it say that tithing of money is a "Covenant practice"?

The only time tithing is done under a "covenant" in the Bible is in the Old Testament. That "tithe" was of crops and livestock... not money.

God's "covenant with Abram was not until AFTER Abram's tithe to Melchizedek, not before. His tithe was not part of a "covenant."

I suggest that you are the one who needs to "read the right books" to get a better understanding of tithes, not Zikky.
A covenant is simply an agreement. Any child of God can make an agreement with the heavenly Father based on relationship. That is what is meant by covenant practice. God does not have just two covenants or agreements, even in the Bible.

Image123: Okay
i think it needful to clarify this statement above so that it is not misunderstood or not clearly understood. My stating "okay" in the context was a peace be still response, a 'idonhearyou' response, not an agreement to what debo was saying. i am fully persuaded that Malachi is the Word of God and truth.
Mal 3:8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
God is a God that has not changed, as says the chapter. However, we need to understand the dispensation of grace that we live in. The Word of God is truth and has not passed away, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Man is not perfect but pressing on to perfection. We come short of the glory of God. We are unfaithful. but God's mercies and grace is what preserves us.
Like i have said, i am convinced that anyone who does not give 100% is robbing God, not just 10%. In many things, we offend. God says to pray without ceasing for instance. We're all unfaithful in that in differing percentages of disobedience. Anyone who is not born again is damned technically.
Mar 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Joh 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Joh 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

These are truths, but we do not go about telling every defaulter this or condemning anybody. Its the exact same with unfaithfulness in giving tithes AND OFFERINGS. We rob God when we do not give our tithes and offerings. Did Moses know this? i doubt it. Did David the man after God's heart know this? i'm not so sure. But malachi revealed this and it is true and pure. It takes grace and revelation to understand the mind of God, not logic or emotions.

plaetton: I did not live in the time of Jesus, so the issue of following Jesus around Palestine is quite mute in this issue.
Some followed, some did not .

Actually, I have not found any non-redacted and non-edited words of Jesus that I disagree with.

But like I said before, a person can say a lot of things, when a particular speech is directed towards me or resonates within me, I take special notice.
Aspects of the Sermon On The Mount that I quoted at the beginning were addressed to me and resonates within me.
So, I am free to take the wheat and throw away the shaffe.

Unless you can prove tome that Jesus was wrong or mistaken on that sermon, I dont' really see what other points you are trying to make.
Jesus never asked me to join a monstrous cult, neither did he ask me to pay monetary ransome(your preferred method).
He identified my personal qualities as being sufficient for the kingdom of god.

Are you jealous that I already have a ticket while you are not sure of your own, despite all your religiousity? tongue

Remember what Jesus said about the Hypocrites and Pharisees.
So unfortunate. Anyways, i'll be back to comment on your new Matthew 5 love when i have time.

So, you are saying that the Jesus sermon on the mount is deceptive?
Can you please clarify?
Was Jesus wrong or mistaken?

And also,
I can bet you that despite your religiousity, I am 100% sure that you do not have the faintest idea of what it means to be born again.
Huhuhuhhhuhu, so John 3 and the below are words while Matthew 5 is plain sight?

Is it not the same Jesus talking? Why being selective? so you sef wan go heaven, nice one. No worry, we'll look at Matthew 5, just confirm that you do not agree with the words of Jesus that i quoted for your benefit?

The pictures are marketing or advert stunts aimed most likely towards the next soccer world cup to be held in Brazil. Miranda did something similar in the late 90s in lagos if i remember clearly.
It however reiterates the attempts to make light of everything and at the end confuse everyone. They say when lies are left unattended to, it takes on the garment of truth overtime, so we hardly know it is a lie. This is the investment the devil has made in making sure that evil is called good. It is no more weird r shocking but common.
Occult symbols and practices are now vogue and fashion. It has become normal to say something or someone is bad, while the context is actually referring to something very good or talented. It has become normal to use 'fvck' a swear word in family conversations. There is a wizard to help in your application installations, and demons to assist in your linux programming. Its all part of the grand scheme perhaps.

Shouldn't Jesus know better than you guys, who are following the much embellished and distorted versions of his message?

debosky: I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed by your response here. Who attacked the messenger? It is simply incontrovertible evidence that shows that the claims of many about ‘tithing like Abram’ is simply false. This is evidence of a large church and how it teaches tithing.
Folks were largely disappointed with Jesus, they did not understand Him. You should re-read what i wrote. i didn't say that anyone was attacking the messenger. i was being general about what people will do after i responded to the quote. Enigma made the same mistake anyway(when he said i was making allegations), no problems. The quoted devotional shows almost nothing. The man quoted many scriptures, and tithing was not even his main point or issue. People can teach from any scriptures. A preacher can teach about righteousness from Daniel. that doesn't mean that the preacher's righteousness is based on the law since Daniel lived in that age. One can teach almost anything from the Psalms, it is also an Old Testament book. That someone references to tithe and quotes Malachi or any other scripture does not automatically prove that such a person is under the law. Jesus taught people about Himself from OT scriptures AFTER resurrection. Many folks would have told Him that He was twisting and manipulating scriptures.
2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Ti 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Again I am disappointed. No one is saying you can’t use Malachi to teach - it is how you use it to teach that matters here. All scripture is profitable for doctrine yes - but does that mean you can twist scripture any way you want simply because it can be used for doctrine? huh
How should it be used to teach, and how was it used?

No it wasn’t anti-tithers that said it was from the law - in this example it was Pastor Chris - he taught that it was compulsory, and calls those that don’t robbers. Is that a case of ‘lessons we can learn’ or ‘practises we can emulate’ or plain and simply calling those who don’t tithe robbers? Again I am disappointed.
The man said nothing about the law. Again, you ought to have read that i stated that i do not agree with everything he said. i'll leave that at that. You know what i teach.

You would rather avoid addressing the issues here under the vacuous claim that people will go into personal attacks. Is ‘protecting’ the messenger from ‘attacks’ more important than speaking the truth?
The issues in the article/devotional are that Pastor Chris is talking about a giving that he says is more important than the tithe. A giving that is expected to stand one out. He, like Oyedepo has shown that tithing is not a fix it all, contrary to what some antitithers have been feeding us. What other issues do you want addressed? You are here and i am here. pastor Chris is not here. Why discuss him and whatever he has to say? Is he the issue here? i'm not protecting him, just not interested in discussing him. Even Jo knows i'm not that shy, Enigma should as well. i'd rather discuss what the Bible says than what so and so said, especially when so and so is not available to explain or defend himself.

Enough of your equivocation - Pastor Chris calls those who don’t tithe robbers. It wasn’t anti-tithers who made that claim. Who is calling who derogatory names then? To say it is simply a case of you don’t agree with any man on everything is a laughable excuse - this isn’t some general discussion on whether we agree with each other on everything - it is a specific discussion about tithe.

What is your stand on the commentary by Pastor Chris? Do you agree non-tithers are robbers or not?
i was specific enough to state that i do not agree with everything pastor Chris said in that article. its not equivocation or a laughable excuse, it is a fact that applies to all. Antitithers have called specific people on this forum derogatory names, no? What is it is not antitithers that make some claim? You do not read the likes of Kunle, chrisembarassey, his drumboy friend and co? Have you seen them insulting the likes of oyedepo and co? Have you ever read them abuse other forum members?
i believe that if anyone does not give God everything, not just a tenth, he or she is a robber. that is, if you givejust 10%, you are a robber. If you give just 95%, you are a robber. the revelation i have is that God owns it all, so keeping any from Him is robbery. But i do not go about teaching that. i'm not the Judge, neither was i told to teach that. There are things one may know or have light on and never teach. Scriptures talk of speaking to a particular people as unto babes. there were somethings Paul never told them. it was bigger than they could here. It would not edify them but perhaps condemn them. Hebrews talks of wanting to give meat but not being able. You know what i teach on the issue of tithes, [s]there is no point trying to get me to make enmies with pastor Chris na[/s].

So it is okay to reference the aspects you agree with but leave out the bone of contention itself - the aspect talking about tithe? Why even bother responding at all? You might as well avoid all tithe discussions if you choose not to engage with the subject of discussion.
i thought the whole quote from pastor Chris was the subject of discussion. We were encouraged to shove it in people's faces or something like that. Allow me to shove it oh. So you agree with this part too ba? This was what i was saying, this was the subject of discussion between myself, zikky and candour. i was telling them that tithe was not always preached as a fix it all, and they were trying to ridicule oyedepo, then Enigma brought this from Pastor Chris.

The central issue here is not the fix it all aspect - it is whether it is required/compulsory, and it means for those who don’t tithe. Your attempts to make every response here about ‘fix it all’ is not helpful at all and appears to be an attempt to move away from what the subject matter of this thread.

This thread is talking about how people are being deceived by wrong teaching of Malachi - no one (as far as I know) has said Malachi should be removed from the bible or not taught from - the issue is, as always, understanding the teaching in context. No amount of claiming scripture is profitable for doctrine will ever justify twisted teaching.
The subject matter of the thread has been long addressed, kindly read the OP again. He was going on about how devourer is insect and tithe is crops etc. that has long been settled. Many people have told us that Malachi is not for us but for priests or for Israel jews. i have answered the thread based on the posts and questions on ground. You already know what i have to say on giving of tithes.

Mark Miwerds: Actually, I did not lie at all. In all of Paul's epistles, he only mentions being a Pharisee in one passage... Phil. 3:4-8. Notice:

Philippians 3:4-8 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

Paul, when speaking of being a Pharisee, was speaking of his past state,... not of his present state. After his Salvation experience on Damascus Road, Paul rejected the sect of the Pharisees, counting that past life as dung.
i'm not into this argument of whether Jesus is a pharisee or not. There is nothing wrong with being a pharisee. Some of Jesus' disciples were pharisees, and Paul told people that he is a pharisee. God however is against hypocrisy, pride, scorn, unbelief etc wherever it may be found. People like to lay emphasis on whther a person is SU or a member of a particular church. That is not what matters. Leaving or joining a particular group is irrelevant if you still have strife, seditious spirit, pride, hypocrisy, unbelief etc in you.

Acts 23:6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a PHARISEE, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

Mark Miwerds: Amen, Debosky!

The proper teaching from Malachi 3 should be that Malachi was referring to a tithe of crops and livestock... not money.
The proper teaching from Malachi 3 should be that the curse associated with not tithing was locusts and withholding of rain.
The proper teaching from Malachi 3 should be that the blessings associated with tithing was rain from heaven and withholding the locust from eating the crops... bringing about a bountiful harvest... not more money, better job, good health, close-knit family, etc..
The proper teaching from Malachi 3 is that it was written to Israel, not to the Church. The Church was not robbing God... the Priests of Israel were.

Chris Oyakhilome clearly distorts the proper teaching of Malachi 3, turning the rebuke and exhortation into something that God never said.

Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
This is akin to putting a gun in your own mouth and shooting it. We should be quoting Isaiah 8:20 to you, not the other way round. It seems scriptures do not speak or apply to you, you just use them as a tool to make points and win arguments. You obviously are not for the law, are you? The other day, you said you do not obey any of them, now you are telling us "to the law". Do you speak according to the law? Do you live according to the law?
The Scriptures remain the Word of God written to us all, not just to Israel. Remove not from His Words lest you be found a liar yet again. The blessings of God are not limited to farmers, neither are His chastisements. This is so kindergaten i thought one had to be blind not to see it. Its like saying 'Give us our daily bread' only refers to bread and nothing else, or that sowing and reaping only refers to crops.

Logicb: olutionary psychology?
Evolution?
Psychology?
Simple.
1) Man is an evolved animal. Yes, an animal.
2) Man's morality is different from animals due to the fact that
humans have the ability to reason with an evolved brain
3) Man's morality comes from innate instincts, personal reasoning,
family and societal norms
There is no such thing as sin. There is only what we perceive to be
right or wrong.
The theory of evolution remains an unproved myth that requires great faith. Why are monkeys not evolving into humans again? Evolution sounds incoherent compared to the chrstian explanation on the origin of man. BTW, hope you watched 'Evolution vs God' youtube video. i was embarassed on the behalf of all unbelievers, how PhD atheists were stuttering when asked qestions on their religion.

Man's morality comes from the ingrained data God has put in every man, which many call conscience.
Romans 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another.

It also comes from religion, society and etc as yo mentioned. However, it hs been proven continually that man will go wrong by default. Man will fight, steal, lie, envy, scheme without being taught. if you've had the privilege of seeing a child grow, you'd know this. This is what is called the sin nature or Adamic nature. The Bible gives the best explanation for this nature seen in every man.

Sin is wickedness. Except you want to argue that there is no wickedness or wrong. When a man murders his fellow man, that is sin. When a man is dishonest, that is sin. When a man has forceful inter.course, that is sin. Only christianity offers the best antidote to all sin, the man Jesus Christ.

Tithing is not more a law of Moses than love your neighbour as yourself or honour your parents or any of the commands on mercy, judgement and faith.
None of the apostles suffered a low life. They counted it all joy to suffer for Jesus. Suffering for Jesus is different from suffering under the oppression of ignorance or the devil. The apostles lived in joy unspeakable, rejoicing in the Lord always. Their lives and their deaths glorified God.

shdemidemi: ^^^I am sure Paul should be right in front of the roll when it comes to blessings, you will definitely agree that that man worked selflessly for this gospel of Christ. Was he a beneficiary of these blessings we are talking about? In fact, we can extend it to all the twelve disciples plus Timothy. Did they enjoy these earthly/financial and 'dynamic' blessings?
Sure thing. He that sows bountifully reaps bountifully. The scripture is true and cannot be broken. They excelled in what they were sent t do, they turned the world 'upside down' for Jesus. If they had not laboured abundantly, they would not have succeded. Paul laboured more than the others, he got a uge chunk of the New Testament and is regarded by many as the greatest. They all forsook all and followed Jesus. There was the man who was tld to sell all and follow Jesus, he didn't. In same measure, he was not as blessed as the 12 apostles. If they put the same effort into any venture, they would have made it. God is a rewarder of the diligent any day. He told them to 'tarry' for power. If they did not tarry, they would not have received the blessing. Many believers miss out to laziness and ignorance. They think once you are saved, you're blessed, therefore there is nothing to do. This is not the complete truth. Any diligent person will reap the fruits/blessings. Any merciful person, generous person, honest person, prudent person etc. This are all keys to blessing and all found in the Bible(God's manual for man). Whatsoever a man sows, he does not have to be christian. The difference is priorities, sowing to life eternal, sowing for eternity. This is what makes the christian wiser than the others. They all have to work to be blessed. This however does not negate or cancel out blessings of mercy. God can bless an unbeliever with health or even healing. He canbless someone with a talent, or with favour or anything He chooses to.

shdemidemi: my bro, I no run o cheesy

'The point made is that we receive BECAUSE we keep His commandments'....

By the above statement, dont you think you are gravitating towards 'works' that is, If I do this I will get that from God.
No oh my bro, there is a balance. Like one Bible passage says faith withut works is dead. Living faith has works but is not works dependent but God dependent. It is not dependent or trusting on self righteousness but on God's righteousness. Salvation is a different matter from being blessed, though salvation itself is a blessing of sorts. Salvation is not by works but by grace. Being blessed is dynamic. One can be naturally/divinely blessed with something like a talent or even wealth. One can also be diligent and become blessed. This is why an unbeliever can be blessed by the law of swing and reaping. Their generosity, hardwork, honesty, diligence, persistence can pay off and make them good at what they do and even bring financial blessings. The edge the believer has is the privilege of spiritual blessings which have more eternal value before God.

Moreover, the subsequent verse states what the commandment in this verse is- 23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

You seem to be looking at things through the eyes of works but God's programme have since moved. This is similar to the children of Israel who God took out of Egypt but Egypt never left them. They complained every time, they would rather be slaves eating fish, cucumbers, melons, onions, and garlic in Egypt at the expense of their liberty. As Christians we have also left that dispensation of the law and of works but most Christians still clumsily carry the 'works' mentality even in this dispensation of grace, faith and trust in God.

Tithing or not tithing, obedience or no obedience, works or no works, not by any merit but by the sovereign will of God. God says I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy and compassion on whom I will have compassion.
Romans 9
18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
demisquare, i don miss you and your gentile ish oh. Where you run go na? The point made is that we receive BECAUSE we keep His commandments, whatever those are. The blessings of God are 'multifaceted'. Some indeed come through mercy, some through faith, some through hardwork, some through divine goodness like rain and sunlight, some through giving, some through righteousness, some through obedience etc. What a man sows, he reaps. God is a rewarder. We do not limit God to one verse or mode of blessing. There is blessing in salvation, blessing in tithing, blessing in praying, blessing in patience , blessing in persistence, blessing in thinking and meditating, blessing in studying God's word etc.
