Middlesbrough are believed to have agreed a fee of about £6 million with Manchester United for Alan Smith. However, the transfer is far from a formality because Smith, who is on holiday, needs to be persuaded that he should swap Old Trafford for the Riverside Stadium. Middlesbrough’s next task is to hold talks with Smith and his agent. Smith, 26, has been offered for sale over the summer to several clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, and has expressed anxiety about his future. He has two years left on his contract and is unhappy about the club’s apparent unwillingness to offer him a new deal, while he also shown concern about a lack of communication from Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager. The money would allow Ferguson to bring in another top striker. Smith has scored seven goals in 61 league appearances since he joined from Leeds United for £7 million three years ago, but started only six league matches last season after recovering from a broken leg. He hoped to be offered a new contract after subsequently proving his fitness and was offered on loan to several clubs in January, but chose to stay put. Gareth Southgate, the Middlesbrough manager, is attempting to strengthen his attacking options after Mark Viduka left for Newcastle United on a free transfer this summer. Jérémie Aliadière, the 24-year-old Arsenal forward, was signed last week for an initial fee of about £1.5 million. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premiership/middlesbrough/article1980467.ece |
Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure is expected to join Spanish giants Barcelona within the next 48 hours. The 24-year-old arrived in Barcelona on Sunday to finalise the details of a move from French club Monaco. "It's a great opportunity for me because Barca are one of the best teams in the world," the 24-year-old told Barca TV. "It is a big step forward for me to come to Barcelona. "They play great football in the Spanish league, I want to play for Barca." Spanish newspapers report that Barcelona will wrap up the signing of the France-based player by Tuesday. Barcelona are said to have agreed terms with his club Monaco as well as his agent, Dmitri Selluyk. "Toure's deal could be concluded very soon," Barca president Joan Laporta said. "We would like to present our supporters a new signing as soon as possible. "We are very close, but sometimes the minor details take the longest to agree to." Toure is expected to cut short his holidays in Ivory Coast for medical at the Nou Camp on Monday. According to the reports, personal terms have already been struck, with the midfielder agreeing a four-year Barca contract worth US$2.8 million-a-season. Toure, who is the younger brother of Arsenal defender Kolo Toure, joined Monaco from Olympiakos last year. He is ranked as one of the most promising defensive midfielders in Europe. Barcelona are bidding to strengthen their side after losing out to arch-rivals Real Madrid in the title race. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/africa/6235036.stm |
Arsène Wenger faces a battle to overcome opposition from the Arsenal board to sign Nicolas Anelka. The Arsenal manager has lined up the Bolton Wanderers forward, who spent almost three seasons at Highbury from 1997 to 1999, as the primary replacement for Thierry Henry. Wenger has never criticised Anelka for threatening to go on strike eight years ago unless he was sold. Wenger believed that Anelka, then 20, was naive and the manager was more angry about the behaviour of Lazio and Real Madrid, whom Anelka joined for £23 million. Some senior figures on the Arsenal board have voiced their concerns and remain upset at the way that Anelka’s brothers, Didier and Claude, who were acting as his agents, encouraged him not to honour his Arsenal contract. Anelka scored 11 league goals for Bolton last season after joining the club from Fenerbahçe for £8 million. When he was linked with Manchester United earlier this month, he replied that he would not be able to turn down a move to Old Trafford and wanted to play for a top-four side. Wenger’s future at the club is also looming in the minds of the board. The manager has one year remaining of his contract and would-be suitors, including Real Madrid, are already testing the water. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premiership/arsenal/article1980499.ece |
Mariory:That's not surprising when you can look at Hamas' Charter. Here are excerpts again: "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it." "The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. " "There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors." "After Palestine, the Zionists aspire to expand from the Nile to the Euphrates. When they will have digested the region they overtook, they will aspire to further expansion, and so on. Their plan is embodied in the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", and their present conduct is the best proof of what we are saying." |
I'm not even saying that they do. I'm just saying if somebody should claim that the jews control the media, it is not enough to label him an anti-Semite.If you read this article-JEWISHMEDIA ,you will understand the context in which the false claim, that Jews control the media often connotes anti-semitism.The fellow claimed that the non-existent Jewish controlled media deliberately ignores Palestinian casualties. The latter claim is equally false Since Jews don't control the media, why should anyone keep insisting that they do.Its either ignorance or prejudice or both.If you google,"Jewish media",you will end up like Tornadoz,in a neo-Nazi site to find support for the allegation. That should tell you something, doesn't it? ![]() |
Generally Nigeria will move forward rapidly, the $15billion taken from the foreign reserves to pay the initial rise in workers' salaries will be recovered in threefold by the middle of next year, by 2010, Nigeria would be a 100% refined petroleum products/ 0% crude exporting country, crude byproducts industries such as plastics industries will thrive, the IPPs will have adequate fuels to generate electricity, more than 3 million jobs will be created by the Refineries, IPPs and associated industries, and Nigeria will live HAPPILY EVER AFTER.This is June 2007.You feel confident that we can provide 2million b/d refining capacity within 36 months? ![]() |
2] we have about $45 billion dollars foreign reserve of which we only need $30 billion for our urgent imports. We get a lot of dollars everyday from our exports that will keep our supply of foreign exchange stable. Then again having so much foreign exchange just encourages Commercial Banks to continue ROUNDTRIPPING.So we should spend 1/3rd of our savings on salary increases for Govt workers who do not represent more than 5% of Nigeria's population? I doubt if Govt workers are even more than 1% of the populace.I guess some people learnt no lesson from the Udorji Awards. |
Tornadoz:Not much needs to be said about you,Tornadoz.I have always said you have a great sense of irony. In order to disprove my allegations of anti-semitism,you cited a well known anti-semitic link run by Frank Weltner of the neo-Nazi National Alliance.Congrats.Didn't the name of the site tick you off? Jewwatch! Why don't you cite the KKK?Do the Jews own the media in Africa,Asia,Latin America and the Muslim world in general?Maybe you should read this article:http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1365 You will probably "accuse" them of being Jewish Quote from Denex: Somebody says Israel controls the western media and he's labelled and anti-Semite.What are you talking about? Who said Israel controls the Western Media? Its bad enough claiming the Jews control it,saying Israel controls it would require the consultation of a psychiatrist. |
Afam:By the very same standards you apply when refering to me as someone who hates Muslims, the collective weight of your opinion exposes your anti-Semitism.Who can forget your "face of extreme Zionism" thread based on the video of one drunken teenager? One in millions. Anti-Semite? Based on what? That I don't agree with you that the killing of innocent ones by the Israelis is right? If that qualifies one to be anti-Semite, please feel free to label me as one, no apologies on that issue.I must have missed where I expressly or impliedly suggested that "the killing of innocent ones by the Israelis is right".Presumably,by your reckoning, being pro-Israel equates supporting the killing of innocents. Is the Jewish nation synonymous with the killing of innocents,so that anyone who generally favors them is a supporter of the killing of innocents.I suppose I can deduce from that, that your pro-Palestinian position entails support for the killing of innocent Jews. I still await with bated breath, your condemnation of the killings in Lebanon.Just last year, you embarked on a frenzied demonisation of Israel for causing civilian deaths in Lebanon. This year's casualties has been met with deafening silence on your part. Are you no longer interested in the fate of Lebanese civilians?Perhaps, your interest last year was not in civilian casualties but in attacking Israel. That is what I mean by the weight of your opinion. By the way it seems you have stuck with I-man for quite some time now, when are we seeing another ID that you will manufacture to hide your identity?Remember when I called you an inveterate liar? You are living up to my description of you because I know the reason for my new username was explained to you by another Nairalander . |
kitaun:It depends how you look at it.At the moment,Anelka is the most intimidating of the lot. However, from a longer term perspective,Hunterlaar will be the best buy.He is,at 24,4 years younger than Anelka and is very prolific. He will be the archetypal "fox-in-the box" that Wenger has been yearning for. Babel is more a midfielder than a striker.I don't think Arsenal neccessarily need his type.Your deficiencies are mainly in the striking position and you need out and out strikers. |
http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/story_pages/sport/sport1.shtml ARSENE WENGER is lining up a sensational £11million swoop to take Nicolas Anelka back to Arsenal. And the Gunners boss wants Ajax stars Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Ryan Babel as back-up if he fails to land the Frenchman. Emirates skipper Thierry Henry is set to join Barcelona for £16m tomorrow after a medical and Wenger's top target to replace him is Bolton's former Gunner Anelka. A source close to the Arsenal boss said: "Arsene reluctantly allowed Thierry to go. It is sad for everyone concerned but Thierry made it clear that this is what he wants to do. And Arsene definitely believes Anelka is the ideal replacement. "If he doesn't get Anelka then he will go for Jan Huntelaar — and Babel is also a possibility." Wenger has maintained a close link with Anelka, 28, despite the striker's acrimonious departure from Arsenal when he joined Real Madrid in a £22million deal in 1999. And we understand he's already held preliminary talks with Anelka's people to sound him out about a move to the Emirates. Anelka, 28, who joined Bolton for £8m last year from Fenerbahce, would jump at the chance to work with Wenger again. |
Henry says "ARSENALCOULDCOLLAPSE THIERRY HENRY says that Arsenal could “collapse” because of the uncertainty over the running of the club in the wake of the departure of former vice-chairman David Dein. Confirming his decision to join Barcelona on a four-year contract in a deal worth about £16m to Arsenal, Henry said his move was motivated by the departure of Dein and his subsequent fears that manager Arsène Wenger would not be at the Emirates stadium beyond next season, when his contract expires. “It wasn’t that the club wanted to sell me,” said Henry in an interview with French newspaper L’Equipe. “It’s me saying I am ready to go, after all the recent events. David Dein leaving has destabilised the club and the manager, triggered off the whole process and set me thinking. If you take away the foundations of a building, it can collapse. I don’t think people realise the importance of David Dein for Arsenal and the fact that Arsène Wenger has not extended his contract was another important point.” I can't help but think, this guy should shut up now.Ok. . .he is leaving. . .can he now focus on his prospects at Barca. We have heard enough of his opinion of Arsenal |
Tornadoz:Make I quote am before you go modify am.Later I go respond |
My IQ, When I was tested, (have you ever been tested) was 163.163? |
Its clear we don't have the finances to fund another major purchase.I doubt if we can spend more than £10 million this summer unless we sell. That was why Utd was looking at bringing Tevez in on loan for a year and then paying up up for him next season. The questions is,who are the quality strikers within that price range.Players like Micheal Owen and Anelka come to mind.Players like Torres,Berbatov and Hunterlaar are just not within our reach. Fabio Quagliarella has moved to Udinese. However,a strike force of Saha,Rooney,Rossi and Smith is not bad if Fergie's intention is to play one up front. With the addition of 3 new midfielders-Nani,Anderson and Hargreaves-It seems that is the route Utd might take |
funkybaby:If you are a UK citizen who has not been ordinarily resident for 3 years in the UK.You still have to pay the full amount.I agree sha, foreign passports help a lot. |
Mustay:What's the matter? The Big Cat got your tongue? ![]() |

Darren Bent could be joining Spurs for £16 million. . .same price as Henry-http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premiership/tottenham/article1975080.ece |
@Afam-There is some truth to what you are saying but I have to note your hypocrisy. How can a rabid anti-Semite like you, call people to order for religious intolerance. You must have missed the baseless canard about Jews controlling the media and all the other sniggering comments Tornadoz makes about Jews |
denex:Chineke!Denex.Your earnings are not the same as the net value of your assets.Lets say you bought a house for £20,000 in 1975 and now its worth £200,000,are you saying you have earned £200,000 and should pay income tax on it? viee:The story is clearly false |
denex:You have lost me here. How does the article "set it straight" as to Iran's intent? The article is merely telling us what Iran's claims are.Is that how you draw your own conclusions? ![]() |
Tornadoz:politics. . .you no know, football. . .you no know.Which one you dey sef? The deal is almost done and you are still expecting £16 million plus Eto.lol |

Omo Eko: Mustay,sorry,last time |
Mustay,I dey sorry o.I no go post again. |
Omo Eko:A "naturalised citizen" who came into the US as an immigrant like millions of others. In essence, you came into the US as an alien like Davidylan Thanks for answering my queries. |
Omo Eko:I understand you have issues with the English Language. An immigrant is a " a person who leaves one country to settle permanently in another".It doesn't refer to legallity or illegality. If your mum filed papers and you came in as a "legal alien",then you came in as an immigrant. No be so? ![]() |
Omo Eko:One last thing. . .to be a "naturalised citizen",you must have been an immigrant ab initio. No be so? You naturalise for Naija? No offence, just inquiring |
@Jackal Welcome back!I don't know what will hurt the Gunners most. . .Henry's departure or Jackal's return? ![]() |
ThiefOfHearts:Its just like the Osu threads.People start threads ostensibly to discuss certain cultural practices of other ethnic groups when the true motive is sardonicism. |
