The Bible is very clear about the condition and hope of the dead.
See the following passages as examples:

Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they no longer have any share in what is done under the sun. Whatever your hand finds to do, do with all your might, for there is no work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the Grave, where you are going.

Ecclesiastes 8:8: Just as no man has power over the spirit or can restrain the spirit, so no one has power over the day of death. Just as no one is discharged during a war, so wickedness will not allow those who practice it to escape.

Psalms 104:29: When you hide your face, they are disturbed. If you take away their spirit, they die and return to the dust.

Psalms 146:3-6: Do not put your trust in princes Nor in a son of man, who cannot bring salvation. His spirit goes out, he returns to the ground; On that very day his thoughts perish. Happy is the one who has the God of Jacob as his helper, Whose hope is in Jehovah his God, The Maker of heaven and earth, Of the sea, and of all that is in them, The One who always remains faithful.

The dead simply become dust or manure - Psalms 22:15. Proverbs 2:18 describes them as powerless or impotent.

So you need not fear the dead. Fear of the dead is promoted by Satan, who lied to Eve, telling her and in extension all humans, you will not die if you disobey God. He promotes this fear by using demons who mimic dead people through spiritism.
It is this fear of the dead that drive many into costly burial rituals for their dead loved ones.

The truth though is that the dead are powerless to themselves and to the living.

God through the resurrection of Christ set out the hope life again to the dead. So Jesus could say in John 5:28,29: Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.
