Politics / Nigerians Have No Reason To Feel Discriminated In India (A Must Read) by infonubia(m): 4:17pm On Nov 08, 2013
Read this article by Priyadarshi Dutta of the Niti Central. It is a response to Jacob Nwadibia's statement on the Goa government move to deport Nigerians living in the city illegally. It also addresses the recent killing of a Nigerian in India and the subsequent violence that followed.

This is Nwadibia's statement:

I Jacob Nwadibia, the Administrative Attache in Nigerian High Commission in New Delhi has forewarned about an Idi Amin redux. In 1972, Amin expelled 80,000 Asian mostly Indians who held British passports from Uganda. His objective was to nationalize the economy, but it ironically collapsed due to exodus of the Indians.

Dutta definitely raised some undeniable points. Read the response and share your thoughts.

Nwadibia warns that one million Indians living in Nigeria might be thrown out on the streets if 40,000 Nigerians living in India are ill-treated. Recently, a Nigerian national was murdered in Goa; which the State Government claims was result of turf war amongst drug peddlers.

Some 200 Nigerians also living in Goa blocked roads and indulged in unruly violence. The Goa Police now wants to evict all foreign nationals (not Nigerians specifically) living illegally in the State. This has provoked Nwadibia to demand an eye for an eye. This is not really the first time any foreign national got murdered in India – or in any other country. But that never provoke diplomats to become Ghengiz Khan or Halaku. Indian students occasionally get murdered in the US, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Some of them are actually victims of racism. Several nations in the world launch drives against illegal settlers. But diplomats do not bay for blood over it, but call for calm.

Nigerians murdered in other countries: Only last month a Nigerian student, Gabriel Soriwei was mowed down by a car in northern Cyprus. The woman driver of the car was detained and released three day later. But the Nigerian High Commission in Nicosia and Nigerian Embassy in Ankara have done precious little for justice to Gabriel. In August, Nigerian Stanley Eteimo, who had got engaged to a Cypriot lady, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Hotel Cratos, Kyrenia in northern Cyprus. It was possibly a hate crime that authorities maintained was a suicide. Nigerians have been killed in Malaysia, Thailand and elsewhere. But nobody has threatened those nations.

The Russian incident: Recently Moscow Police detained 16 Nigerian students (former terrorists) who were engaged in hooliganism in Nigerian Embassy in Moscow over non-payment of financial grant to them. It was the Nigerian embassy which called up Police finding themselves in a tight spot. The Nigerian embassy accepted the fact that the event brought calumny. It even postponed the Nigeria-Russia Business Forum saying the event organised by Nigerian embassy would lack credibility.

Indians in Nigeria a settled lot: In the present case in Goa, it is true that a Nigerian has been murdered. The guilty must be brought to book, whether he is an Indian or a foreigner. But simultaneously it has also emerged that the victim dealt in drugs. He was no software engineer, no medical practitioner, no trader or earning his livelihood by any honest means! But the Nigerian High Commission in India seems to be in denial. Will Nwadibia tell us that what are the professions of the Nigerians who created a ruckus in Goa? What brings so many Nigerians to Goa in the first place? Majority of the Indians in Nigeria whom Nwadibia threatens are living in that country for long. Whatever might be their citizenship, they are living legally in Nigeria. They run businesses or work in offices. They have their families in Nigeria and even own property there. Many of them are actually born in Nigeria; and belong to every age group. But the profiles of the Nigerians who live in India are vastly different. They are mostly young, male and living either alone or with friends. Some of them came on student visa but now expired. Most of them have no credible profession to pursue.

Indians in Nigeria not into crime: Not more than 10 Indians citizens are lodged in jails of Nigeria, Benin, Chad and Cameroon combined (vide MoS, External Affairs Reply in Lok Sabha August 7, 2013- “Indians Languishing in Prisons Abroad). But around 500 Nigerians languish in various Indian jails, a fact finding team led by a prominent Nigerian lawmaker recently found out. Around 1000 Nigerians are lodged in various jail of China. There are 800 Nigerians in Togo, a small West African nation of 7 million. Drug peddling is a common charge against them in any country. Is this merely a result of discrimination against Nigerians by all these countries, and magnanimity by the Nigerian authorities towards foreigners? No the Nigerian High Commission is acutely aware of these facts. But I leave it to readers’ judgement why they are silent about it.

Nigerians found dealing in narcotics: Is it merely anecdotal that Nigerians in India deal in drugs? No. As per the records of the Narcotics Control Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs, 223 foreign nationals were arrested last year on charges of drug peddling. Out of them 67 were Nigerians, more than any other nation except for Nepal (72). Those alleging that the bias against Nigerians stems from racial prejudice against the Blacks should explain why it does not extend to other Africans in India? It is because no other African nationals have such antecedents in India as Nigerians. India was a vocal critic of Apartheid Policy in South Africa. It conferred upon Nelson Mandela, the highest civilian award of this land Bharat Ratna in 1990. As a school boy, this writerwrote a letter to Nelson Mandela admiring his struggle and wishing him early release. In the 1950s and 1960s India had helped Nigeria in Railways sector. Indians are one of the most accommodative people over the millennia.

Nigerian drug peddling a longstanding issue: The Goa murder has brought the drug peddling issue to a head. But drug peddling by Nigerians in India is an old problem. It is on record that Late Ajit Panja, as MoS, Finance replied to a Parliamentary question put by Krishna Kumar Birla in Rajya Sabha on August 30, 1988. Panja acknowledged that reports received and seizures made indicated that Mumbai was increasingly being used as a transit point by Nigerians in their drug trafficking activities. Some of the Nigerians nationals arrested for drug trafficking were found to be students. Panja also informed the House that Government of India and the Government of Nigeria had signed a joint declaration on October 21, 1987. It was intended to ‘extend cooperation to each other in suppression of drug abuse and prevention of drug trafficking’. The number of Nigerians arrested in 1986 and 1987 for drug peddling were 22 and 46 respectively. It has risen to 50, 75 and 72 in 2004, 2005 and 2006 respectively.

The joint agreement has proven to be a dead letter. It is something both the Governments are aware of. So let us not compare Indians in Nigeria and Nigerians in Indians.

Thanks...Well that is not to say that we don`t have our challenges,it all depends on what you want out of life. I have been a child advocate from childhood, i love kids and have always seen them as a privilege gift. My love for kids motivated me to marry at a very young age immediately i left school,it was not funny for us but my love for children not just mine has kept me going and i can do anything for them...My kids are great, no day passes without them saying my Daddy i love you or i am proud of you and that brings me great joy. There Mum shows great understanding and does not take it for granted, when she has time like the weekends it is for the kids,no party, no weddings or visitation except the family is going out together. As a family,we have our differences, challenges, fights etc but certainly not with the well being of the children.
Nice! Worth emulating.

Efemena_xy: Nothing wrong with being a stay-at-home dad as it's done with the chid(ren)'s best interests at heart.

Having a parent with the child before and when they get back from school pays dividends. The kids are much happier and even more emotionally secure in the knowledge that dad loves and cares that much for them that much.

No amount of money made can replace the love and security a child feels from just being with them.

Having said that, this would be detrimental to the child's development ONLY if the parent in question isn't happy / fulfilled in their role. In that case, their negativity will rub off on their kid(s).

I concur with all ur points! You couldn't have said it any better.

Those aren't really stay-at-home dads. I'm really referring to fathers who take up the traditional role of a mother while the mom works.

deeptesting: have two kids and i have zero tolerance policy for housemaids so we don`t have one,my business permits me to have more time than my wife and as such i spend more time at home with the kids. Nothing brings joy to my heart and life than been responsible for the kids not just financially but been present physically. My greatest joy is the bond we share as father and children,i am proud of myself and most importantly the joy that radiates in the life of my kids. I only want them to be fantastic girls like there Mum.

Great! I trust you are doing a good job at that. Good to know that you aren't just staying at home but u run a business as well. That's like killing two birds with a stone.

There seem to be a growing number of stay-at-home dads lately. These men do everything from dropping the kids off at school to doing the household chores. Once upon a time, disengaged fathers represented the typical pop culture parental stereotype. Of course, I'm aware that this belief still holds true in some parts of the world but but there's been a tremendous change in such views.

A 2011 census bureau report showed that among fathers with a wife in the workforce, 32 percent were a regular source of care for their children under age 15, up from 26 percent in 2002. Among these fathers with preschool-age children, one in five fathers was the primary caregiver, meaning their child spent more time in their care than any other type of arrangement.

Interestingly, these dads are not taking up the role of "Moms" but instead are carving a unique role for themselves as parents.

My wife wouldn't mind me being a stay-at-home dad as long as she makes enough money to take care of the family. Who's to say that stay-home-dads can't run a home business as well?

Can you be a stay at home dad? Share your thoughts!

Nubia bro, You've said nothing about Shizzy yet undecided

Good observation bro. I think Shizzy was only doing what his customer asked him to work on. He might have seen it as an opportunity to get back at Jazzy for what happened with "Go Low" though I still think Don Jazzy's version is significantly different from Shizzy's.

He should continue to work on making his beat from scratch. He looses credibility any time his name is in the midst of a controversial song. Remember Davido's Gobe.

Anyone who has been listening to Nigerian music for some time would be familiar with the talented artist Wande Coal, super music producers Don Jazzy, and more recently, Seyi 'Shizzy' Akerele. The trio got involved in an intellectual property fracas over twitter today following Wande Coal's release of his latest effort titled "Baby Face." Listen to the song here.

For those wondering if Wande is still with the Don Jazzy-owned record label Mavin Records, now you have it. Wande quietly left the record label and has since set up his Black Diamond Entertainment.

Background

The genesis of this issue is all over the blogosphere You can check on Nairaland or my site to get a gist of how it all happened.

Lesson Learned

While the purpose of this post isn't to judge who's right and who's wrong, or who stole what. It's important for anyone involved in music production (artists, producers, and writers) to be able to define what content belongs to them.

In this situation, both songs have the same lyrics and very similar beats. The question is....who wrote the lyrics? Is it Wande, Jazzy, or some other song writer? It's quite obvious that Don Jazzy made the original beat, but who was it made for? Was it for Wande Coal, who was an artist under Mavin Records at the time, or someone else? If the beat was for Wande at the time, was there a release clause on Wande's terms of leaving Mavin records that prohibited him from working on unfinished songs? In other words, Does he have rights to all his songs, both finished and unfinished?

These are some of the questions that come to mind while dissecting this issue. An honest response to the questions will determine if indeed Wande unlawfully used Jazzy's intellectual property without giving Jazzy his due credit (Seyi Law, this no be network credit...lol).

Both upcoming and established artists must clearly define what belongs to them. Intellectual Property laws are established to reward creativity and discourage plagiarism at any level. If these laws can be implemented and strictly enforced, the issue of "he/she stole my work" will reduce significantly.

Also, if business brings two people together and they later become friends, business still takes precedence over their friendship. In fact, the friendship will be strengthened if the business terms are clearly defined and each person know what rightfully belongs to him/her.

Finally, I hope Wande Coal and Don Jazzy settle this matter amicably and take their dirty laundry off social media. Take a cue from Sound Sultan and Sean Tizzle - how they both resolved the issues surrounding Sean Tizzle's mega hit song "Sho Lee." I wish them more successes in their future endeavor.

My 2cents...

Vernon Maynard, a man who lives in Palm Dessert, California turned 100 years old recently. It's not his age that is a shocker, but what he did on his birthday. When his family and friends asked him what he wished he had done in his 100 years of life on earth, the Californian responded that he had always wanted to jump from a plane with a parachute.

Maynard, a retired car dealer was presented with the chance to memorialize his centenarian birthday yesterday by doing exactly that: parachuting!

Jean Walcher of the U.S. Parachute Association says "Maynard and his two great nephews made their first skydive along with trained instructors from 13,000 feet southeast of Los Angeles." Also, Skydive Perris manager Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld says "Maynard obtained a doctor's note before making the jump." That was a smart move by the manager.

Maynard's daughter, Linda Hironimus said that her father's friends had made the arrangements for him to skydive after he said he always wanted to try it.

Do you have a 'bucket-list' - list of things you wish to TRY. Then, go for it! Who says you have to wait until you're 100 years old. Suggestions: it could be as nerve-wrecking as bungee-jumping, skydiving, jet-skiing, mountain-climbing, traveling around the world, learning another language, or playing an instrument.

However, there are some people out there that wish they can...do their own laundry, cook a delicacy (not African food lol), learn to sew, live in another country, or ride a bike. Well, I dare you to TRY.

Leave your comments...what is the one thing you want to try?

Mike King was known as a prankster. He decided to play a prank on his girlfriend, Katie Barabas . He would propose to her while dressed as a homeless man. There's a good reason behind the idea -feeding the less-fortunate was one of the activities they enjoyed doing together.

The 22-year-old proposed in front of fellow Feed the Homeless volunteers in South Bend, Indiana, and his friend and filmmaker Cody Clemons helped record his partner’s shocked reaction. While Katie was passing out meals to the less-fortunates, he approached her and told her how she was 'kinda cute'.

Watch her reaction as he held out the ring.....

‘[When] he took of his mask and got down on one knee and I was in complete shock and in such joy,’ said his bride-to-be.

The happily engaged couple plan to invite the homeless from the Feed the Hungry campus ministry to attend their reception.

What do you think...?

Stores are on lockdown at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey, after at least one gunman opened fire Monday night.

According to a police source, the shooting began near the Nordstrom department store on the second level of the mall. At least eight shots have been fired; the gunman is believed to be wearing body armor.

An estimated 200 police units were on the scene, and a mass-casualty unit was required.

None of the witness reported seeing anyone hit by the gunfire.

One witness said the man was “strutting by” and talking to himself as he fired at least five shots.

Althea Brown, 26, of Paterson said she was in Talbots, a clothing store in the mall, when she saw the man walk by.

“He looked at me and kept on walking,” she said. She said she heard three shots, then two more. The man appeared to be wearing body armor, and had the visor of his helmet pulled up as he walked, she said.

Another witness, Shadey Reyes, 24, a Bergen County resident, was working in the J. Crew store when she heard the shots.

“Everyone froze in place,” she said, then ran to the parking lot.

The mall was surrounded by police cars from Paramus and surrounding communities, grouping mainly in the area around Nordstrom’s. Ambulances were gathered at the west side of the mall.

An employee at the bareMinerals store said she heard gunshots shortly before the Paramus police ordered the store’s employees to lock the doors and stay inside until further notice.

At the time of this reporting, the gunman hasn't been identified. InfoNubia will bring you more details as they becomes available.

Foreign Affairs / Three Suspects Arrested In Connecticut For 'halloween Hoax' by infonubia(m): 3:25am On Nov 05, 2013
The Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) locked down its campus for more than three hours today after the police received a 911 call that "a person carrying a sword and gun" had been spotted at the school. But by midafternoon, an “all clear” was given, three people were in custody, and police said they were investigating the possibility it was a Halloween hoax.

CCSU Police Chief Chris Cervoni said three "persons of interest," including at least one student, had been taken into custody. Surveillance video showed one entering a residence hall with what appeared to be something "looking like a sword" and a "possible handgun," Cervoni said. No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.

Although three people were taken into custody, the authorities did not find any weapon; so, authorities were looking into the possibly it "could've been a Halloween costume." "We determined there was no real threat to the students, faculty and staff here," Cervoni said.

"It wasn't a prank because there was concern and alarm," he said, adding that the men in custody were "being cooperative." No one was injured.

"Campus emergency," CCSU wrote on its Twitter feed around 12:15 p.m. "Seek shelter. Lock doors, close windows. We will communicate when we have more info. This is not a drill. #ccsu" CCSU officials also issued similar alerts over the campus loudspeakers.

Police and SWAT team members swarmed the 55-acre New Britain, Conn., campus, but quickly focused on James Hall, a dormitory on the campus' southwestern side. Police dogs could be seen entering the building. About 400 students live in the dorm.

According to the school, officials were treating it as an "active shooter" situation as police searched for "a suspicious person carrying a gun."

According to a student interviewed by WFSB, police told him they were looking for a black male wearing camouflage pants and possibly a mask. Another CCSU student said he saw a person matching that description get off a city bus and head in the direction of the campus carrying what appeared to be a samurai sword on his back. "I figured he was wearing a Halloween costume," the student said. "I just went and parked my car and went to class."

So folks, halloween is over. If you celebrated it, good for you! Let's move past the attempt to scare people because as is the moral of this true story, it might bite you in the behind.

No detail has been provided regarding whether the suspect was simply wearing a costume or they were real. Nevertheless, he might face some criminal criminal charges.

The pregnant wife an American soldier stationed in Asia got brutally stabbed in her home while she was chatting on FaceTime with her husband. The soldier watched in horror as the attack unfolded.

According to reports, Rachel Poole, 31, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after a man who was hiding in her Texas home stabbed her multiple times on Wednesday October 30. She was nine months pregnant at the time. Law enforcement say 19-year-old Corey Bernard Moss stabbed Poole from behind with a stainless steel knife.

Luckily Poole survived the attack. She was in critical condition when her baby, Isabella was born. Doctors performed a successful c-section and the baby is in good condition.

Apparently, Poole knew the attacker. She managed to call the police after the attack and Corey was caught shortly afterwards. He claimed that the victim owed him money for vehicle repairs. Is that enough reason to stab anyone, not to talk of a pregnant woman?

The victim's husband, Justin Poole has been deployed to Asia for nine months. He posted a picture of his newborn daughter and recovering wife on Facebook. On one photo of his wife, he wrote: "My wife fought back so that her daughter could live. But she can not see out of her eye still at all. And can't see or hold her baby until she recovers."

The suspect has been charged with criminal attempted capital murder and his bond is set at $150,000.
