Following the unfortunate car crash that claimed the life of Festus Iyayi, the former president of the Nigerian Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Our Grammarian of the Federal Republic, Honorable Patrick Obahiagbon (GFR) gave this condolence message on Facebook.

The grand initiation of Professor Festus Iyayi is a lancinating loss of another stentorian voice, against retrograde and prebendal forces of primitive mercantilism. That he passed through transition on matters pro bono publico, bears eloquent testimony to our state of dystopia. Such is the evanescence of life. Its all vanitas vanitatum."

Just last week, Honorable Patrick said this about the ASUU strike:

This ASUU strike is a miasma of a deprecable apothesis of an hemorrhaging plutocracy, cascadingly oozing into a malodorous excrescence of mobocracy.

With all tarmangant ossifying proclivities of a kakistocracy, our knowledgia centura is enveloped in a paraplegic crinkum-crankum. Therefore, ASUU, cest in dejavu, dejavu peret ologomabia."

#lobatan. I rest my case!

Foreign Affairs / Four Suspects Of Westgate Mall Massacre Appeared In Nairobi Court by infonubia(m): 7:18am On Nov 12, 2013

These four Somalis above: Mohammed Ahmed Abdi, Liban Abdullah, Adan Adan and Hussein Hassan are accused as suspects of the horrific Kenyan Mall attack that occurred a couple of months ago. It is uncertain if these men are Kenyan nationals too.

"The prosecution must come with a strong and convincing case for why these people should conduct their trial while in custody," defence lawyer Mbugua Mureithi told the Nairobi court. These men are not alleged gunmen in the attack. They pleaded not guilty to 'charges of carrying out a terrorist attack by supporting a terrorist group."

Apparently, the gunmen in the Westgate attack were four, not twelve people that security forces had reported. Also, it seems that the gunmen died during the four-day siege. However, Interpol is still trying to identify the four bodies as the real gunmen.
The defense is expected to present its argument to the court during the initial hearing which begins on December 19. Defense has to explain why these men should be on bail during the trial. How about there is no evidence that they are the actual gunmen? The trial will commence in late January.

Several witnesses in the mall mentioned how the gunmen stormed through the crowded complex while they fired and hurled grenades at innocent shoppers and staff. According to the Kenyan Red Cross, over 20 people are still missing and several more dead bodies to be recovered from the destroyed mall.

After the attack, the Shebab threatened more attacks against Kenya because Nairobi refused to pull its troops out of Somalia, warning that "rivers of blood will flow in Nairobi."

Foreign Affairs / Bus Collision In South Africa Killed 29 And Injured Several Others by infonubia(m): 6:55am On Nov 12, 2013

South African government spokesman reported today that a bus collision occurred on a Moloto road that is well-known for fatal accidents. The accident took the lives of 29 people and critically injured 11 other people.

Joseph Mabuza, Mpumalanga province safety department spokesman said, "The number is now 29. The bus was traveling from Pretoria when it collided with a truck which had swerved out of its lane." He added that "The truck driver was trying to avoid a stationary vehicle and collided with the oncoming bus."

The bus had collided with a truck near Kwaggafontein, a town that is 60 miles East of the capital Pretoria. The victims who were involved in the deadly collision were taken to a nearby hospital in KwaMhalangu. Three of the injured victims died at the hospital, eight are seriously injured, and 12 others are still slightly hurt.

"We are not sure if the truck driver and the bus driver survived the accident," Mabuza told reporters. "The bus was traveling from Pretoria when it collided with a truck which had swerved out of its lane," he said..

The company name of the bus was not immediately available. Around 634 buses travel daily along in Pretoria along the narrow and potholed route. These transport vehicles that use the road are usually overloaded and not roadworthy.

To make it worse, drivers tend to speed on the road. In the previous month, 18 people were hurt in a collision on the route; frequent news about dangerous accidents on Moloto road have been reported.

In 2012, religious leaders held a prayer service for the safety of the road. Also, a radio station dedicated a day to profile its dangers while a provincial minister committed to improve conditions.

We've been so lucky in Nigeria. We don't have hurricanes, wildfires, earthquake, typhoon, or any natural disasters that plague even some of the most advanced countries.

Unfortunately we have created our own man-made disaster. From road accidents, air crashes, to senseless religious and inter-ethnic and political killings, people's lives are being lost in numbers.

If only we can get our acts together, have true leadership that understand the value of human lives, we'd be a much better nation where our citizens wouldn't be finding solace abroad.

Nairaland / General / 10,000 Feared Dead And Millions Displaced In The Philippines By Typhoon Haiyan by infonubia(m): 4:57pm On Nov 10, 2013
As many as 10,000 people in the Philippines may have died in one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded that destroyed whole villages and devastated cities with huge waves and winds of nearly 150 mph.

The Philippines on Sunday were still trying to comprehend the destruction that Typhoon Haiyan brought to this string of islands in the Pacific. Corpses hung from tree branches and were scattered along sidewalks and among flattened buildings. People raided grocery stores and gas stations in search of food, fuel and water.

A weakened but still powerful storm is now churning through the South China Sea toward Vietnam, which was evacuating tens of thousands of people from its coast. Haiyan has sustained winds of 100 mph and is due to strike Vietnam by Monday.

Literature / Re: Silent Moments - The Story by infonubia(m): 2:18pm On Nov 10, 2013
Chris's plan did not work.

They had planned to meet at their usual location the day after she’d told him about the baby. Terry had packed all her things, and she waited under the shade of the trees. No one came. She was alone until sunset. After waiting for so long, she began to feel unsafe and she left. She waited for two weeks, called Chris’s phone, and even stopped by his dad’s house to see if he was there. He was nowhere to be found!

She had called Maple Baptist University to see if school had started and Chris was enrolled there for the Fall Semester. The admission representative informed her that Christopher Bartley had transferred to another school just few weeks prior. Due to confidentiality, she was unable to tell Terry where Chris had moved to. He did not notify his family about the change. How could Chris leave without a word, letter, or at least a text message?

Terry was devastated. Now back in her room, she laid on her stomach, clenched her fist, and shut her eyes really tight. She groaned silently, hoping by some miracle that when she opens her eyes, the past five months would have been a dream – a terrible nightmare! She wished it never had happen – all of it, including Chris. While she reminisced on her decisions – the good and the ugly, she drifted off to sleep.

Bang! Bang!

Terry woke up to what sounded like fireworks. She tossed to the other side of her bed to check her T.V. No, its turned off, she thought to herself. Maybe some of those hooligans down the street are playing with firecrackers again. Terry went back to sleep. Several minutes later, she opened her eyes again. She tried to get up but felt extremely weak. Her toes had barely touched the floor when she felt a throbbing headache. “For Christ’s sake, can life be any worse?” Terry mumbled to herself. She was distraught to see that she was still on planet earth. Nothing has changed. She blamed herself for everything. What will she do now?

She saw that the gym bag she had packed two weeks earlier was still positioned nicely in the corner of her closet. The last thing she wanted was for her dad or stepmother to find it there and question her about it. She headed toward the bag, unzipped it, and took out her toiletries.

“Ow!” Terry shouted. The headache hit her again; this time, it was more forceful.

“What in the world? I better get some Tylenol before I pass out again,” Terry said out loud. As she walked down the stairs, the thought of overdosing overwhelmed her. What if…just what if I accidentally take five or eight more than the normal dose? Will this pregnancy go away? Wait a minute, what if I die? No, I can’t die. So, how much is too much? Alright Terry, just take the bottle and check it out on the internet… in your room. No one will know. They all think I’m in school anyways.

Terry quietly tiptoed to the kitchen. She grabbed the Tylenol bottle, and opened it slightly. It was full. She closed it back. She wanted to make sure the door was locked so she could hear when Susan returns from work. That’s if I’m not dead by then, she thought, as she silently slid over to the living room. The olive pillows were fluffed and in their place. The cream carpet was clean and Hawaiian scented. Susan has a habit of cleaning the living room before leaving for work. Terry was reminded of how much she can’t stand her perfection. No human can be that perfect! “Oh give me a break," Terry whispered.

She felt like a spy in an action movie with Angelina Jolie. She would be Jolie’s partner in crime – ready to save the world from a disaster caused by some tech-savvy psycho who wants to take over the world. Terry moved to the next section of the house towards the den. Why is the door open?

“Hello! Is anybody home?” Terry hollered. No response.

“Dad, are you home? Susan?” Terry called out, but heard nothing. She gently walked to her dad’s bedroom. She heard shallow gasps and wheezes like a strangled cat. She turned around the corner to her parent’s bathroom. There she found her father lying in a pool of blood.

“Oh my God! Dad, are you ok? Dad, can you hear me?”

Terry ran out of the bathroom to the front door. She raced to the empty street. No car, no one was walking by. It was mid-afternoon. Her neighbors were probably at work or at school.
“Somebody please help!” Terry shouted, hoping a familiar face will appear.

“Anybody! Help!!” Terry shouted louder with every ounce of energy that was left in her. There was silence. Terry could hear the noisy birds chirping in the nearby trees that surrounded her house. “Someone please help me,” She mumbled through the tears that suddenly began to flow down her cheek.

She ran back to the house and straight to the kitchen. She dialed 911 as she headed to the bathroom. Her dad was lying down on his chest, his left hand tightly holding his side. Terry knelt down and rolled up her sleeve while she waited on hold for a customer representative to answer. “Daddy can you hear me?” She only heard the music from the phone.

“Don’t worry dad, I’m here. It’s Terry. I’m here, dad.”

Religion / Rev Billy Graham Gets A Star-studded 95th Birthday by infonubia(m): 1:02pm On Nov 10, 2013

Rev. Billy Graham celebrated his 95th birthday in a great, memorable gathering with hundreds of invited guests present.

A guest list that included former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Rev. Rick Warren and businessmen Rupert Murdoch and Donald Trump came to pay tribute to a man beloved for his humility and faithfulness.

Because the frail Graham no longer has the strength to speak behind a lectern, his enduring message of salvation through Jesus Christ came in the form of "The Cross," a 30-minute DVD that made its debut at the celebration. His hearing and eyesight have dimmed, but Graham has remained true to his familiar themes.

Singers Lecrae and Lacey Sturm also are featured in the video, which can be watched online and will be played in churches across the country. It is part of the "My Hope America with Billy Graham" series. The production included recorded sermons and footage of a younger Graham.

Skaggs, singer Michael W. Smith and TV host Kathie Lee Gifford were among those leading the singing of "Happy Birthday" to Graham. About 850 well-wishers were on hand at the resort inn.

Palin told Graham that his Christian message is needed for a "great awakening" the nation and world need.

That message, as billions around the world have heard for more than six decades, is salvation and the need to live a new life because of Christ's sacrifice on the cross.

Graham has provided counsel to generations of U.S. presidents beginning with Harry S. Truman. Staging revivals that he called "crusades" around the world, the founder of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association has reached untold millions of people in person.

Happy birthday Rev.Billy Graham!

Romance / A Life Lesson: Marriage Isn't For Me by infonubia(m): 12:36pm On Nov 10, 2013
I saw this article on a friend's Facebook page. After reading it, I realize that marriage isn't for me either. He's right. Before you start judging and thinking "What the heck?!" Please read this post. You won't see marriage the same way - only for the better!

Enjoy!!

-------------------

Having been married only a year and a half, I've recently come to the conclusion that marriage isn't for me.

Now before you start making assumptions, keep reading.

I met my wife in high school when we were 15 years old. We were friends for ten years until…until we decided no longer wanted to be just friends. smiley I strongly recommend that best friends fall in love. Good times will be had by all.

Nevertheless, falling in love with my best friend did not prevent me from having certain fears and anxieties about getting married. The nearer Kim and I approached the decision to marry, the more I was filled with a paralyzing fear. Was I ready? Was I making the right choice? Was Kim the right person to marry? Would she make me happy?

Then, one fateful night, I shared these thoughts and concerns with my dad.

Perhaps each of us have moments in our lives when it feels like time slows down or the air becomes still and everything around us seems to draw in, marking that moment as one we will never forget.

My dad giving his response to my concerns was such a moment for me. With a knowing smile he said, “Seth, you’re being totally selfish. So I’m going to make this really simple: marriage isn't for you. You don’t marry to make yourself happy, you marry to make someone else happy. More than that, your marriage isn't for yourself, you’re marrying for a family. Not just for the in-laws and all of that nonsense, but for your future children. Who do you want to help you raise them? Who do you want to influence them? Marriage isn't for you. It’s not about you. Marriage is about the person you married.”

It was in that very moment that I knew that Kim was the right person to marry. I realized that I wanted to make her happy; to see her smile every day, to make her laugh every day. I wanted to be a part of her family, and my family wanted her to be a part of ours. And thinking back on all the times I had seen her play with my nieces, I knew that she was the one with whom I wanted to build our own family.

My father’s advice was both shocking and revelatory. It went against the grain of today’s “Walmart philosophy”, which is if it doesn't make you happy, you can take it back and get a new one.

No, a true marriage (and true love) is never about you. It’s about the person you love—their wants, their needs, their hopes, and their dreams. Selfishness demands, “What’s in it for me?”, while Love asks, “What can I give?”

Some time ago, my wife showed me what it means to love selflessly. For many months, my heart had been hardening with a mixture of fear and resentment. Then, after the pressure had built up to where neither of us could stand it, emotions erupted. I was callous. I was selfish.

But instead of matching my selfishness, Kim did something beyond wonderful—she showed an outpouring of love. Laying aside all of the pain and anguish I had caused her, she lovingly took me in her arms and soothed my soul.

To all who are reading this article—married, almost married, single, or even the sworn bachelor or bachelorette—I want you to know that marriage isn't for you. No true relationship of love is for you. Love is about the person you love.I realized that I had forgotten my dad’s advice. While Kim’s side of the marriage had been to love me, my side of the marriage had become all about me. This awful realization brought me to tears, and I promised my wife that I would try to be better.

And, paradoxically, the more you truly love that person, the more love you receive. And not just from your significant other, but from their friends and their family and thousands of others you never would have met had your love remained self-centered.

Truly, love and marriage isn't for you. It’s for others.

tnature: wow...guilty as charged. However, this article creates an impression or stereotype of Nigerians in other countries as most likely involved in drug dealing. I understand the gravity of the offense of the murdered victim; however, mob justice is not the answer. The Goa police and authorities should have been the one to step in and control the situation. Dutta wants to discuss the involvement and activities of Nigerians in other foreign soil and how the officials did not react to the death of previous Nigerians? It's one action that gains media's attention and the public's eye that paints the overall picture - raising the names of other victims from the grave.
I don't believe that the removal of Indians from Nigeria is the solution; neither is pointing fingers and using statistics as support the answer - any publicist can do that. My point is that the leaders that are appointed are there for a reason; they should step up and do their job. To emphasize one of the few points that I agree with Dutta on: "the joint agreement has proven to be a dead letter." The two countries should work on creating an active agreement that works to reduce drug trafficking, no matter what foreigner or national brings it in.

Got some good points.

So FG should round up all Indians since Vaswani Brothers imported expired foods into Naija; evaded taxes; lied to NASS and BPE in contravention of BP Act, that their company, Stallion Group will revive Volkswagen Nigeria, instead, they bought out FG stake turned the facility into a warehouse.

How about Dana company? Dana plane crash? They are selling KIA products in Naija without airbags.

If some Nigerians are selling drugs in India, govt should find , prosecute and sentence them. Govt shouldn't not be labelling people as fraudsters because of their nationality. I wonder if public officials in India could mention Saudi and terrorism in the same sentence and not get reprimanded?
Any sensible government wouldn't let any of these alleged atrocities go unpunished. Unfortunately, there's been no one to hold them accountable. Hence, the records are not in our favor when dealing with crime numbers.

Sorry, this is unrelated but one of my pet peeve is seeing a Nigerian treat a fellow Nigerian like trash while esteeming the foreign counterpart. It shouldn't be! It happens a lot at our international airports.

I said population was the MAIN reason, not the ONLY reason. Another good reason would be the Nigerian zeal for education, entrepreneurship, and material success, which surpasses that of any other African people. Similar to the Indians, Lebanese, Chinese etc. China is the world's second major superpower today, yet you have probably 100 million Chinese overseas till tomorrow.

That, I agree with. Indians are everywhere as well. Just like the folks from the countries you mentioned. That still doesn't mean we shouldn't keep our house in order. It's gotten so bad citizens of other African countries claim Nigeria when they get caught doing something illegal.

For every 50 Nigerians abroad there is probably 1 Kenyan. Main reason: Population. So it makes no sense whatsoever saying ''neither are Kenyans being arrested around the world for fraud and drug-related activities''. It's a false equivalence (logical fallacy).

Statistics has solved this problem. Here's the stats:

Total population of Kenya: ~43 million
Total population of Nigeria: ~170 million

This is a 1:4 ratio.

Going by the stats, your reason is significantly flawed. Cos if we consider population, for every 50 Nigerians abroad, there should be about 13 Kenyas. Population isn't a good excuse in this instance.

While this maybe true, it's still an assumption. There are lots of Indians in Kenya as well and they haven't been deported neither are Kenyans being arrested around the world for fraud and drug-related activities. Let's not excuse our excesses but instead look inward and begin tackling some of our issues. This isn't a tribal issue but a Nigeria issue. And the government isn't going to solve all of our problems. We are the change we seek.

740megawatts: Front page, pls...What I find distasteful is the fact that our countrymen have an unusual global reputation for narcotics biz. I'm not sure how this problem can be solved though...
While there are several Nigerians that are doing very well in foreign countries, they are also those who are involved in one fraudulent activity or the other. What are Nigerians doing in Goa?

As much as I don't support what the Goa natives did to the Nigerian man, I believe we (Nigerians at home and abroad) need to do a better job at changing the image and perceptions about us. We don't have to wait for the government to change every single thing wrong with the country.
