Health / Lullabies Have Pain-relieving Powers, Says Academics by infonubia(m): 5:42pm On Oct 30, 2013
Not sure if this really needed a "study" by "academics" to figure out but they did anyways.

According to the research conducted at London's Great Ormond Street Hospitals, parents should sing to their children when they hurt themselves as lullabies help to reduce their pain and "alleviate their suffering."

When singing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" to your little ones, be assured you are soothing them in a scientifically proven way.

The researchers worked with three groups of hospitalized children all under 3 years old, some of whom were waiting for heart transplants, singing lullabies to one, reading stories to another and the poor third group was left alone entirely.

The children's heart rates and pain perception were all monitored and only the ones who heard soothing songs showed decreases in both categories.

"It shows that children can be affected physiologically by music," study author Professor David Hargreaves said. "The practical applications are fairly obvious. Music therapists are going to be a lot cheaper than drugs to numb pain."

Well, its good to know that this effect can be proven with a study. Meanwhile, let me to take some music lessons to I can sing the best lullaby to babies...lol

What if it was a female that touched her, would that be considered harassment as well?
Family / People Found Dead In South Carolina Home After Apparent Domestic Dispute by infonubia(m): 4:26pm On Oct 30, 2013
The common saying "end time things" that is prevalent in the Nigerian online community seem to ring true as more odd and disturbing stories are reported in the news on a daily basis. These oddities are not specific to any geographical location - it happens everywhere.

This time, Greenwood county in South Carolina is under the radar as the SWAT team found six people dead in a home after a man called authorities that he was thinking about hurting himself.

According to the Associate Press, police found bodies of four adults and two children in the home including the body of the man they believed called the police.

The police could not immediately say how the six, whose age range from 9 years to early 50s, were killed.

Greenwood County Sheriff's Office spokesman John Long told The Associated Press that a preliminary investigation indicates the deaths were related to "a domestic-related incident." He declined to call it a murder-suicide.

More details should be revealed as the police continue to investigate.

I understand that the stress and pressures of life can be overwhelming and some people can't handle such pressure and they snap, especially if they already have a propensity toward something like that due to mental illness.

I don't support suicide but if you must take your life, why take others down with you? My heart goes out to the six individuals, especially those who had nothing to do with the matter.

Thanks to Pennsylvania law of harassment, it may be illegal to touch a pregnant woman's belly

A representative from the Pennsylvania State Police tells reporters that earlier this month, 57-year-old Richard J. Beishline visited his neighbor, a 30-year-old pregnant woman named Michelle Troutman in Frankfort, Pennsylvania. According to the police report, after giving Troutman a hug,Beishline said, “I just want to be friends” and rubbed her stomach. Troutman pushed him away, and he quickly left. She has since filed harassment charges against Beishline, and if he pleads guilty, he’ll pay a fine determined by a judge. If he pleads not guilty, both parties will have to testify in court.

According to Pennsylvania-based attorney Phil DiLucente (who is not involved in the case), this kind of case will most likely be difficult for the plaintiff to win.

“Pennsylvania law defines harassment as engaging in conduct that harasses, annoys, or alarms a person,” DiLucente. Beishline would likely receive a simple criminal citation, which bears the seriousness of a traffic ticket. “However, this case will make a dent in people’s awareness of a woman’s personal boundaries,” he says.

So, whether it's people offering an unsolicited advice, asking deeply personal questions, or rubbing someone's stomach without consent, a pregnant woman's personal boundaries have always been up for debate. Beishline would likely receive a simple criminal citation, which is equivalent to traffic ticket. “However, this case draws people’s attention to the fact of a woman’s personal boundaries.

Expert's Opinion

After reading this case I wondered, Isn't it normal and 'natural' to be curious and attracted to a woman's belly. Both men and women are generally fascinated by a preggos's belly - or more so, the 'cuteness' of the unborn so that touching or asking to touch the belly should not be offensive. Nevertheless, every person sees their body differently just as some people like their space.

“There’s nothing inherently wrong with being curious about a pregnancy — the mechanics of it are fascinating,” says Rebecca Traister, the author of Big Girls Don't Cry. So, your meddling family members and perky office peers may not mean harm, but according to Traister, there’s an unspoken belief held by both men and women that pregnancy is the ultimate female endeavor. “We see this with women who are pressured by their families to have kids or our fascination with celebrity baby bumps in the tabloids,” she says. “It’s led to this thinking that pregnancy is a public concern. It's all part of an ongoing conversation about the ownership of women’s bodies."

She noted that it could also be that the act of being pregnant is a universal reference point for women. And that curiosity or interest may lend itself to innocent yet unwanted touching. “When you walk down the street, you don’t know whether a man is an expectant father, but a pregnant stomach broadcasts a woman’s life decisions," says Traister. "However, people are starting to rethink how we see the female body. Hopefully this is one issue that we rethink, as well."

Hmm...What do you think? It'll be great to hear from both males and females on this issue.

Many people might not remember this song as it was delivered by Onyeka Nwenu and King Sunny Ade years ago....It was a fantastic hit song that goes ahead to push home a moral persuasion to the youths of today.

Coke Africa however brings the sonorous voices of Sage and King Sunny Ade on this flirty life performance and does well to remind us that King Sunny Ade is still one of the best at what he does.
I could not tell the difference between the old track and the new one except for its instrumentation and the DJ voice overs.

This is good music

Watch and Enjoy!!

Foreign Affairs / 13 Year Old Girl Survives After Being Molested And Buried Alive In Pakistan by infonubia(m): 5:18pm On Oct 28, 2013
Talk about a crazy world! This time the spotlight in on Pakistan.

A teenage girl was buried alive after being molested in Pakistan's Punjab province, prompting a court to order a probe into the brutal attack.

Siddique Mughal, a resident of a village in Toba Tek Singh district, located 140 miles (225 km) from Lahore, told police that his 13-year-old daughter was abducted by two unidentified men while she was going to a seminary for Quran lessons.

The men took the girl to a deserted place and assaulted her. They believed she had died during the assault and buried her by the roadside, Mughal said.

Miraculously, the girl regained consciousness and dug her way out of the mud covering her. She raised an alarm and caught the attention of a passerby, who took her to a nearby rural health center.

As police were not cooperating with the girl's family, the Lahore High Court Chief Justice's Complaint Cell took notice of the incident on Saturday and directed the district and sessions judge of Toba Tek Singh to probe the matter.

The sessions judge subsequently directed police to take steps to arrest the rapists, complete their investigation and submit a report to the court without any delay.

The frequency of these stories make one cringe at the thought of what these poor girls go through. These acts are just barbaric. Parents, please keep an extra eye on your children.

Politics / Cameroon, Chad, And Niger Joins In Boko Haram's Fight by infonubia(m): 2:26pm On Oct 28, 2013
More than 70 members of the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram have been killed during a Nigerian military operation in the northeastern state of Borno state an Army spokesman told a U.S. Reporter. The military "remains on the offensive," according to Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, who said the operation have started since Thursday and 'continued.'

"We do have members from Chad, Niger and Cameroon who actively participate in most of our attacks," said a young man presented to journalists Friday night by Nigeria's military as a captured fighter of the Boko Haram terrorist network.

The claim of foreign fighters indicates the growing influence of Boko Haram, which started out as a machete-wielding gang and that now wages war with armored cars, rocket-propelled grenades and improvised explosive devices in its mission to force all of Nigeria — Africa's largest oil producer and a country of 160 million that has almost equal numbers of Christians and Muslims — to become an Islamic state.

Boko Haram poses the biggest security threat in years to the cohesion of Nigeria, already riven by sectarian, tribal and regional divisions that often explode into bloodletting, amid power struggles ahead of elections in 2015 that likely will be contested by the current president, a fundamentalist Christian.

A harsh military crackdown in three northeastern states covering one-sixth of the country since mid-May has forced Boko Haram out of major cities and towns, but the security forces appear unable to prevent regular extremist attacks on soft targets like school pupils in which hundreds have been killed in recent months.

President Goodluck Jonathan's government, which is struggling to control the Islamic rebellion, for the first time presented an alleged Boko Haram fighter, a 22-year-old walking on crutches because of a bullet wound suffered when he was captured in a recent attack.
The young man refused to give his name, for fear that his family would be targeted. His account sheds new light on life inside the shadowy Boko Haram, which means "western education is forbidden" in the Hausa language.

The captured extremist member said religion did not figure in his life as a Nigerian Islamic warrior, insisting his leaders "had never once preached Islam to us." He said the name of Allah was invoked only when "we are running out of food supply in the bush. Our leaders will assemble us and declare that we would be embarking on a mission for God and Islam."

He added: "I did not see any act of religion in there. We are just killing people, stealing and suffering in the bush." So, if all these killings are not for Islam and these Bokos suffer, what is the drive behind the killing?

Do you think United States should be concerned or afraid of Boko Haram - after all the group is treading on the ground of befriending Al-Qaeda? With U.S. economic interest in Nigeria, especially its oil and gas and Bokos becoming a friend of U.S.' enemy, is this enough to raise an alarm for the Western troops?

As promised, here's episode 3 of "Silent Moments." If you haven't, read the first and second parts to catch up with the story. Enjoy this episode....

“You’re what?!” Chris asked as if he had missed everything Terry just explained.

“I missed my menstrual cycle. I think I’m pregnant.” Terry said again.

Chris stepped back, scratching his head vigorously. “You think or you know? This is definitely not the time to play the guessing game Terry. It’s either you are or you’re not.” Terry could tell that Chris was restless. He paced back and forth without looking at her.

“I know Chris. I know I’m pregnant. I took a test two days ago. I didn't know how to tell you. I-I thought you’d be happy,” Terry said.

“Baby, I am happy. I just wasn't expecting to be a daddy now. I don’t think I’m ready to father a child. This is my last year as a college student. I wanted to graduate and at least get a job so I can take care of you,” Chris replied while looking at her eyes.

Terry had trusted those eyes many times, believing every word they idealize through Chris’s lips. She felt disquieted. Her gut doubted Chris’s response. Does he really love her? Does he truly have a plan to take care of her? What about her high school diploma and her plan to be a nurse just like her mom when she was alive?

“Chris, you know that you’re my first – my first real boyfriend, my first date, and my first lover. I had saved my virginity. I wanted it to be a gift to whomever I marry, but you insisted that I prove to you that I love you. It was your idea Chris!” Terry started to grow horns. She was angry. How dare he make this seem like her fault! She told herself.

“Stay calm Terry,” Chris said.

“Don’t tell me to stay calm! You are evil, wicked, and selfish! You’re an ass Christopher,” Terry shouted vehemently.

------------------------

The blazing heat of the summer sun that was scorching her face did not help in easing the discussion. Terry suddenly noticed how peaceful the trees look, and the yellow sunflowers were missing some petals. Their color appeared pale, as if they were washed out. She was thankful they were several miles away from her neighborhood. The nearest town was a couple of miles away, and at the very least, no one would recognize her here.

This was the usual spot where she had met Christopher. They had been dating for five months. She remembered the first time they met at Charlie Café; she was sitting by herself reading her favorite novel by Charlotte Brontë, ‘Jane Eyre’. She had read the book several times, but it never seemed to get old. Chris briskly walked by her without saying a word. He ordered his drink and sat at the table right across her; they were facing each other.

“Aren't you Mr. Benson’s daughter, little Terry?” He’d asked her.

“Yes, without the little part.” That was it. For a silent moment, she was smitten.

She had heard about Christopher before that time; his sister had just graduated from Blackwood High School. Terry had been at their house a couple of times, but Chris was away in college. He was rarely around. The last time she saw him was when she finished Middle School. Chris had graduated high school and moved out of his pops place that same month. The rumor that was going around town was that he did not want to work at his dad’s store. He wanted to be a movie director. He was known as lean tower Christopher because he was skinny and tall.

Times had changed. She could still recall how charming he looked as he gazed at her. He cleared his throat and adjusted his seat when she looked up from her book. He was no longer lean and skinny; his strong, tall frame complimented his muscle tones that peeped out from his fitted shirt. He’s a man, Terry thought to herself, a good-looking man. She could barely concentrate on her book as they exchanged glances and sweet smiles.

Finally, he had the gut to ask her on a date. He took her to one of the best restaurants in town. How he could afford such an expensive treat, she did not know. However, she enjoyed every moment of attention he gave her.

Fast-forward five months later, she is having a heated argument with him. It’s hard to believe that this was the same 24-year old guy who sang love songs to her while they talked on the phone over the summer. Wait a minute! Was it all a summer fling? Had Chris been lying to her the whole time? Terry was short of words.

They had both enjoyed a romantic time together, stroking, kissing, and gently caressing each other. They had cuddled in the shade of the trees during their daytime picnics while they drifted off to sleep in each other’s arms. Twice she had sneaked out of her room at night to catch a ride with him to the next town. When her dad asked her where she was, she had lied that she slept over at Jenna, her elder sister’s house.

For folks ordering medications from China, please be really careful.

Police in the city of Jeju, South Korea arrested two Chinese nationals for smuggling diet pills containing human flesh into South Korea from their home country, according to reports.

The Chinese suspects, including a 26-year-old female student, are suspected of smuggling a total of 3,500 capsules manufactured from human remains into the country through parcels and luggage transported from China, the authorities said. They then allegedly sold the diet pills to locals and Chinese residents here, they added.

The diet pills also contained a cancer-causing substance, Sibutramine, the officers said, adding that the pills could pose serious health hazards.

Smuggling of the so-called "human flesh capsules," camouflaged as health tonics, has increased since the first case was caught in August 2011.

Officials said they will strengthen inspections of drugs arriving from China and continue their investigation for similar crimes.

I remember a pharmacist who was arrested and jailed for importing "fake" drugs from China into the US. I hope imported drugs are tightly scrutinized before letting them into Africa.

Have your say....

"Wealth is a tool of freedom. but the pursuit of wealth is the way to slavery"
~Frank Herbert, author of God of Emperor Dune~

Do you dream of owing no one anything - no loan, bills, mortgage, or any debts?

Although many people wish to be rich or wealthy, very few people act or plan towards it. In a book titled "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind: Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth: by T. Harv Eker. This book highlighted 17 things that rich people do differently from the average Joe.

The purpose of this blog is to help you build your mindset from ordinary to extraordinary. Hopefully, you will be spurred to greatness and achieving your goal of not accumulating riches, but living wealthy. What's the difference? riches is 'abundant resources.' Wealth is the 'supplies that produce abundant of resources.' Below are 14 out of the 17 ways Eker mentioned in his book. You can start today!

1. Rich People Think “I Create my Life”
This may sound a bit proud or atheistic. However look at it like this: take full responsibility for your decisions, most especially your spending or saving habits. Life happens; however, your method or way of dealing with it determines your status of wealth. Are you the type that saves up for emergency fund and miscellaneous OR do you have the itch to shop, shop, SHOP? If you're a shopaholic, the first step is to admit that you like to, not only shop but spend. There's just something about your bank card or cash that makes you want to drive by a store. This applies to both men and women, especially the men who are drawn to gadgets, tools, and video games.

2. Rich People Play the Money Game to Win
This second step addresses taking action. Even the bible says faith without work is dead. Therefore, you have to 'play the money game' - that is, aim at being wealthy, not just rich. What you choose to do with your money is your choice. I'm not going to make any assertion or suggestions. Nevertheless, create a plan.

3. Rich People Are Committed to Being Rich
If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride. Many people dream of breaking off poverty, lack, or simply managing/squeezing the resources. I call the latter 'living from paycheck to paycheck.' The dictionary defines 'commitment' as "an obligation, promise, or pledge that restricts one's freedom of action.'

4. Rich People Think Big
If your dreams and goals will help just your family, think BIGGER. If you have enough money to sustain you for 3 months, think BIGGER. It's amazing that wealth is equivalent to power, just as knowledge is comparable to power. It's usually the rich that controls the poor, and the borrower is a servant to the lender.
If you set your mind to it, You can make it happen. You'll also be amazed at the increased passion you'll develop to get to your goal.

5. Rich People Focus on Opportunities
There are certain that may happen in life which are beyond our control like natural disasters (hurricane, flood, forest fires, tornadoes, etc.) or the death of a loved one. Nevertheless, you can look at each "CHANCE" life presents to you as an opportunity or obstacle. Wealthy people focus on opportunities. They're on alert for ways to boost their company and investments, earn more profit, and gain new accounts. What are you focusing on...do you see chances as a hindrance or opportunities

6. Rich People Admire Other Rich And Successful People
Rich people are encouraged by success stories. This way of thinking pushes them further towards their greater goals. It's amazing how people generally want to give and 'bless' people who are well-off and rich, rather than poor people. Eker advises readers to think positively about wealth. Some people have been trained to believe that money is evil; so accumulation of wealth or riches is automatically evil too. I beg to disagree. When you love money so much that it becomes your only priority, there may be a problem. When you have positive feelings about wealthy, you'll develop a tendency to work for it.

7. Rich People Associate with Positive, Successful People
Modelling is one of the primary ways we learn. If you associate with positive & successful people, not only can you learn from them, but you’ll also start to think… “if they can do it, why can’t I?” There's a proverb that says 'Birds of a feather flock together.' Who do you move or associate with? are they positive, goal-oriented, and ambition-driven people? So, don't just admire rich people, associate with them. Don't be intimidated by their financial status; rather, learn what works, so you can practice it too.

8. Rich People Are Willing to Promote Themselves And Their Value
Many of us have been brainwashed to think that promoting ourselves is boastful and to be avoided. Pride is defined as a high or inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether cherished in the mind or displayed in one's conduct. On the other hand, promotion is act or means of encouraging the sales, acceptance of a product especially through advertising or publicity. Pragmatically, most rich people are excellent and effective promoters. They know how to promote themselves, their ideas and their products with enthusiasm. They are prepared, ready to deliver a compelling pitch about themselves, how they achieve success, and the growth of their products.

9. Rich People Are Excellent Receivers
To earn large sums of money for your work and products, you must become comfortable with receiving large sums of money. This is a great practice for improving your receiving skills. When someone offers you a compliment, simply accept it and say thanks. Don’t look for something to compliment the other person. If you have any positive response, go ahead; otherwise, there's no need to fabricate something. Simply accept.

10. Rich People Choose to Get Paid Based on Results
If you want to become rich, choose to work in a pay-for-performance environment. You can choose to work in your own business or in a commission-based or bonus-based job. If you’re confident in your abilities and skills, this arrangement will motivate you more, and it will earn you a lot more money.

11. Rich People Focus on Their Net Worth
Generally, when we think of wealth we think in terms of how much a person makes a in year . But wealth is much more than that. There are four major elements of wealth: income, savings, investments, and cost of living (expenses). Savings and investment should be substantial in comparison to the expenses.

12. Rich People Manage Their Money Well
This is fairly self-explanatory: to become rich you need to be serious about money management. If you save and lack the skill to manage the money, you'll destroy it or it'll destroy you. Using your spare money optimally, avoiding credit card interest, and only spending on useful things are great places to start.

13. Rich People Have Their Money Work Hard For Them
Once you have some money saved up, INVEST it. There’s no reason to leave money sitting in your bank account. Someone once told me that money has wings to fly away; so tie it with something, invest - so it can multiply. Passive income is an incredibly powerful wealth-creating vehicle and the sooner you get started, the better. Think outside the box on how to procreate wealth.

14. Rich People Act in Spite of Fear
Most rich folks are risk-takers. They study their investments - or hire an investor to do it for them, and based on knowledge, act. Most decisions in life are time-sensitive. We don't get to sit on that job offer or choice of career/degree. If you want to create wealth, you have to boldly face your fears. Fear can intimidate and hold you back. Don't be afraid to make mistakes; mistakes is generally one of the best life teachers. So, act in spite of your fear!

Fear will never completely go away, but it’s the ability to “feel the fear & do it anyways” that separates those who create their dream life and those who simply dream about it.

So........
Note, this doesn't mean rich people are perfect. Sometimes, they are suicidal, anxious, frantic, and addicts - when they have no peace of mind.
