Foreign AffairsAfghan Taliban: Let Spring Offensive Begin by infonubia(op): 2:57pm On Apr 27, 2013
The Afghan Taliban on Saturday announced to launch an annual rebel offensive, according to a statement released to the media by the insurgent group.

The Taliban, fighting Afghan government and the NATO-led coalition forces, in the statement said that they would start the annual spring operation code-named "Khalid bin Waleed" -- the name of Islamic history's general -- from Sunday.

"This year's spring operation, in accordance with its combat nature, will consist of special military tactics quantity and quality wise while successful insider attacks, to eliminate foreign invaders, will be carried out by infiltrating Mujahideen ( holy warriors) inside enemy bases in a systematic and coordinated manner," it said.

They also warned civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centers regarded as the legitimate targets by militants besides warning people not to support the government and foreign troops.

The Taliban, which has been waging an insurgency for more than one decade, also said: "Similarly, collective martyrdom (suicidal) operations on bases of foreign invaders, their diplomatic centers and military airbases will be even further structured while every possible tactic will be utilized in order to detain or inflict heavy casualties on the foreign transgressors."

The announcement came as spring and summer, known as the fighting season, is drawing near in the insurgency-hit country.

The Taliban-led insurgency and conflicts claimed the lives of more than 2,800 Afghan security forces and 402 foreign soldiers while leaving 2,754 civilians dead last year in the central Asian state.

Despite the decade-long war in Afghanistan, which has taking the lives of over 2500 U.S. servicemen and NATO forces, not to mention the amount of money the war has gulped, the question still remains: has the security situation really improved? With President Obama's plan to reduce the U.S. troops by 2014, the Afghan law enforcement will have to step up and defend themselves against the Taliban.

What do you think?

Should the U.S. proceed with troop withdrawal and let Afghans defend themselves or would you rather support having some military presence (both US and NATO forces) beyond 2014 to help train the Afghan security forces?

Foreign AffairsNorth Korea Refutes Conspiracy Theory Linking Pyongyang To Boston Bombings by infonubia(op): 2:38am On Apr 26, 2013
While we are yet to fully understand the motivations behind the Boston Marathon bombings, North Korea vehemently denies any conspiracy theory linking Pyongyang to the tragedy.

The Korean Central News Agency strongly rejects claims made in an article published on the American website World Net Daily which suggested that Pyongyang planned the attack. Read the statement from North Korea below:

The U.S. internet newspaper World Net Daily speaking for U.S. conservative forces recently released a false story linking the bomb explosion during the Boston Marathon to the DPRK. It reported the misinformation that the DPRK used such an agent as Al Qaeda for attacking the U.S.

The DPRK categorically dismisses this anti-DPRK ruckus made by the conservative daily bereft of any elementary appearance as a medium as a false propaganda which does not deserve even a passing note.

Its act of charging the DPRK with bomb explosion in Boston by deliberately linking it to Al Qaeda is part of the hostile forces' sinister plots to tarnish its international prestige out of their inveterate repugnance towards it.

The U.S. conservative forces seek to re-list the DPRK on the "sponsor of terrorism" and take it as a target of "anti-terror war" as it did in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The DPRK would like to stress once again that it has no touch with Al Qaeda and has consistently maintained the stand of opposing all forms of terrorism by acceding to international conventions against terrorism.
When the DPRK feels necessary to strike the U.S., it would not resort to such heinous terrorism in hiding.

The U.S. conservative forces should have felt ashamed of its behavior to tarnish the image of the DPRK, a full-fledged nuclear weapons state, through such mean practice.
North Korea's statement stops short of condemning the attack. Pyongyang has been in the news in recent months for threatening the U.S and South Korea.

Foreign AffairsSyria: Finally, The U.S. Believe Chemical Weapon Was Used. by infonubia(op): 7:44pm On Apr 25, 2013
The United States is finally starting to believe that the Syrian government forces used the chemical weapon sarin in their fight against rebels trying to force out President Bashar al-Assad.

This is happening two days after the U.S., which had declared any used of chemical weapon in the Syrian war a "red line" that could trigger intervention, was skeptical about Israeli military's assertion that such weapons were used.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the U.S. officials are still assessing the situation and need all facts before any decision is made.

This is turning out to be a dicey situation for the U.S. as some factions of the Syrian rebel just recently pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda. On one hand, there is a need to establish a safe zone for the rebels. On the other, how do we distinguish between those that are for us and those are are against us?

How do you think the United States should handle this situation? Is there any easy way out of this?

FoodEating Habit: Hamburger Still Looked The Same After 14 Years by infonubia(op): 4:40am On Apr 24, 2013
One of the popular words that follow the word ‘hamburger’ is ‘America’ – thanks to franchises such as McDonald, Burger King, and others.

You may want to think twice before buying a happy meal for your child or consuming that double cheese burger. Why? Because a Utah resident, David Whipple, who recently sent his 14 year old hamburger to a TV show called ‘The Doctors” proved that the burger never changed.

Whipple bought the burger on July 7, 1999. He forgot it in the pocket of his coat for a month. His wife noticed it two years later and realized the burger still looked the same. Fast-forward fourteen years later, the hamburger patty has no mold or fungus. Only the pickle is gone. Everything else is intact.

Choosing to be healthy begins with making healthy food choices. I choose to be healthy. Nowadays, fast food – quick and easy seems like the best way to go. However, it causes some internal damages to the body system. Whipple kept the receipt as his proof; he wants to inspire his grandchildren of the importance of making healthy eating habits.

In all fairness to McDonald’s, here’s their response to Whipple’s discovery: "McDonald’s hamburgers are freshly prepared in our restaurants. While not knowing the conditions in which the food was kept in this specific claim, what is scientifically known is that in bacteria and mold only grow under certain conditions. McDonald's hamburger patties in the U.S. are made with 100% USDA-inspected beef. They are cooked and prepared with salt, pepper and nothing else - no preservatives - no fillers."

Who to believe? The choice is yours…

Christianity Etc2nd Child Dies After Couple Turn To Faith Healing Instead Of Doctor by infonubia(op): 8:58pm On Apr 23, 2013
As Christians we know that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus but at what point does faith become foolishness/wickedness?

There are people who share the same belief as Herbert and Catherine Schaible, the Philadelphia couple who belong to a fundamentalist Christian church that believes in faith healing. They are currently serving probation for the 2009 death of their toddler after they refused to take the sick child to the hospital have his bacterial pneumonia treated, but prayed instead.

Last week, they lost another child after the 8-month-old boy suffered from diarrhea and breathing problems for a least a week and stopped eating.

I'm almost certain that these are very loving and nurturing parents who care deeply about their children but their faith healing has cost them the loss of two children and a violation of their probation.

Does the Bible explicitly state or infer that taking medicine is a sin? I need my Bible scholars to help me out here. If it is, then why did God give man (doctors) the ability to diagnose and treat diseases. Let's keep in mind that these treatments are supposed to help us have a better quality of life.

It is important to note that taking medication doesn't necessarily mean that one's faith is in medical help and pills. The pills are taken in faith, believing that we'll be well after taking the pills.

Imagine our world without doctors, nurses and other medical professionals. The chaos will be unbearable. And why should we punish our children because of our faith?

If it is not sinful to drive a car, which solves transportation problem, then why is it a sin to go to the hospital to solve our medical issues?

Do you know anyone that shares the same belief as the Schaibles? What's your take on faith and medication?

Foreign AffairsWhen 185 Is Less Than 3 - A Contrast In Responses To Terrorism by infonubia(op): 3:37pm On Apr 23, 2013
When Boston was bombed, 3 died, 2 direct suspects were identified, the whole city was shut down, a perimeter drawn, the FBI, SWAT, City police, and other law enforcement agents were all put out to HUNT down the suspects and in less than 3 days, one suspect was dead and the other captured.

The US president was clear as clear could be when he stated “we refuse to be terrorized, we will find you and bring you to justice”. He took decisive steps, put the well trained and equipped security forces to good use. He never blinked on the resolve and determination to protect Americans while sending a clear message to terrorists that American lives are valued.

I live in Nigeria and I've never been in the USA, but as I followed the chase of the bomber on CNN, I could tell that the story was going to end with the capture/death of the bomber. Even in a faraway place like Agege, Lagos, Nigeria where they was no power supply but for the generating set roaring in the middle of the night and no security beyond the vigilante guys we pay to roam the streets at night with no security equipment I could tell the resolve of the US government not to give in to terror and to bring terrorists to book.

Here in Nigeria, bombings happen frequently and we hear statements like "Terrorism is a global phenomenon; we must learn to live with it”. We hear that terrorists are to be offered ‘a life’ to stop the act of terrorism. Here we call it amnesty-a model we use to enrich and empower terrorists and insurgents to sheath their swords-, we give them money, juicy contracts and freedom to enjoy the "wealth through terrorism."

By now I doubt if there’s any Nigerian that hasn't heard of the Baga massacre where 185 Nigerians were killed in Baga, a fishing community in Maiduguri, Nigeria and the killings happened as a result of severe fighting/shooting between the military and insurgents aka Boko Haram in the northern part of Nigeria.

It doesn't feel like news or like they say it in the world of ideation ‘it’s not new news’. Nigerians hear about bombings regularly-the park bombing that killed over 50 Nigerians, the 20 bombs that went off same day in Kano, the Abuja barracks bombing, the church bombings...we hear about it all the time and we’re used to hearing about it. We used to agitate for the government to ‘do something’ but that agitation has been drowned on the most part as even the president has said Nigerians should learn to live with ‘IT’; that ‘IT’ stands for "Insurgency and Terrorism."

When a nation has a security budget of about a trillion Naira (6 billion USD) for the year, yet, lacks political sincerity as well as audacious, informed, knowledgeable and sincere leadership, you find insurgents being approached with amnesty, militants being given security contracts and innocent citizens being killed in tens and hundreds. You find a sense of despair in the citizenry and a fertile ground for all terrorism, insurgency and ultimately a civil war?

You know, I've lived all my life in Nigeria, seen the poor die in unequipped hospitals and the rich die in foreign hospitals, I've seen the poor smile through their tears and know the rich also cry. I've seen churches bombed and communities razed.

While President Obama preaches change to Americans and President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan preaches ‘fresh air’ to Nigerians. While most Nigerians can’t afford the basics of food shelter clothing nor potable water, a governor gave out 1million Naira (6k USD) each to politicians to go for lunch.

When scores of citizens are killed in Nigeria with the president saying the people should live with it and Boston was shutdown to hunt bombers who killed 3 Americans, that indeed is when 185 is less than 3.

The world’s oldest person, Jiroemon Kimura, added another feather to his cap when he turned 116 on Friday, April 19th.

Kimura was congratulated in a video message by the prime minister of Japan, Shenzo Abe. "I'm 58 years old, still a young man at only half your age. Thanks to your generation's efforts, Japan could overcome several difficult times and achieve the prosperity we enjoy today. Your healthy existence becomes our confidence and pride," the prime minister said.

Guinness World Record crowned Kimura the world’s oldest person in December 2012. Now, he is celebrated all around the world for his longevity. What is his secret? “Three-meal-a-day diet of rice, pumpkins and sweet potatoes,” a local media reported. His advice? Eat light.

Kimura has 25 great grand children, 13 great great grandchildren, and lives with his 60-year old grand-daughter-in law.

Cheers to long life and good health Mr. Kimura. Congratulations!

Foreign AffairsIran In Fresh Push For More Babies by infonubia(op): 5:27am On Apr 22, 2013
The Iranian government is promoting house-to-house health education. Its goal is to encourage couples to have more children. The more, the merrier!

Last year, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, ordered the reverse of the birth control policy that the country has used for 20 years. The goal is to engineer a baby boom, raising the country’s population from 75 million to 150 million. That’s double the size!

“In the marriage training course, we have focused more on the child-producing because the single-child issue has caused so many problems and provoked much debate,” Khamenei told the semi-official Fars news agency.

“For this reason, I am suggesting that families should have more than one child and reduce the gaps in pregnancy to only two years. If the pregnancy gaps exceed two years, couples should revise their methods and make plans in this regard.”

It is ironic that while Iran is focused on population growth, some other countries are trying to reduce their growth rate because they do not have the infrastructure to support such growth. See my recent post on population growth in Nigeria where I wrote about a population growing at the rate of 11,000 babies per day.

It seem like the aim of this campaign is to boost Iran’s ability to compete with the West.

What do you think? I’d love to hear your perspective.

Foreign AffairsBombing Suspect Captured...where Do We Go From Here? by infonubia(op): 3:55pm On Apr 20, 2013
The events of last night is another testament to America's greatness. The ability to pull together after such a horrific event - neighbors looking out for one another and promptly providing helpful tips to law enforcement, people of different faith coming together, hoping and praying that the suspect is caught - proves once again that there is nothing we cannot achieve when we come together as a people. We achieve so much by setting aside our differences, beliefs, political affiliations, and everything else that so easily divide us.

This is indeed a victory for America and justice for the victims of that attack. Again, kudos to the law enforcement agents that put their lives on the line to ensure that the suspects are apprehended (dead and alive) in such a quick manner.

As we bask in the victory, it is important to look back and learn a lesson or two from this event. There are several lessons to be learned but I choose to focus on unity.

Unfortunately, in recent years, it seem like it takes a tragic event to bring us together as "We the People." Our political process has become so polarized that we can't seem to agree on anything. From how to get our economy back on track to issues such as gay rights, guns, foreign policy, and a host of others.

We are quick to point fingers at the bickering in Washington but we forget that most of these law makers act based on the feedback they get from their constituencies and not their individual convictions. It seem like on both sides (democrats and republicans), we get boxed to our political ideology so much so that we don't listen to the other side's argument.

Within our local community, are we able to have an honest and sincere conversation with people don't necessarily share the same ideology with us?

Let's remember that at the end of that day, we are all in this together as one people, one nation, under God. In the words of the late Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe, "things fall apart when the center cannot hold." We are the change we'd like to see. It begins with the individual, the community, and then, the nation.

As for the Boston Marathon explosions, what can we do as a community to minimize the occurrence of another domestic attack? This is not just an American problem, it's an issue that affects the world. There's been so much bombings in various parts of the world lately.

Please share your thoughts. I look forward to the interesting discussions.

Foreign AffairsRe: Boston Marathon Bombing Suspects Are Brothers Of Chechen Origin, Say Reports by infonubia(m): 4:36pm On Apr 19, 2013
The FBI released the identity of the two suspects in connection with the Boston Marathon explosion. These two brothers are from Russia's Chechnya Caucasus, a region plagued for many years by a bloody on-off Islamic insurgency stemming from separatist wars since the Soviet Union broke up in 1991.

The USA Today reported this about the region:

Militants from Chechnya and other restive regions in Russia's volatile North Caucasus have targeted Moscow and other areas with bombings and hostage-takings for more than 20 years. The allegations of ties to Monday's Boston bombings are the first connection of terror attacks in the United States.

Predominantly Muslim, Chechnya declared independence from Russia in November 1991. A full-scale separatist war broke out in 1994 and lasted through most of the 1990s. It was only after a second wave of Russian military action in the early part of the last decade that Chechnya fell under firmer Russian control.
Already, the older of the two brothers have been confirmed dead while the younger brother, identified as Dzhokhar Tsaenaev, a 19 year old who lived in Cambridge, just outside of Boston, is on the run.

This revelation buttresses my thoughts on Tim Wise's article about White privileges at it relates to the Boston Marathon bombing, where I tried to explain why Whites aren't suspected when an act or terror is perpetrated.

For now, lets keep our fingers crossed and hope that Dzhokhar will be caught (preferably alive). Kudos to the FBI and other law enforcement agencies that sprung into action since the tragic incident.

cap28: Your final sentence contradicts what Tim Wise is saying in this article - he is saying that being white excludes you from suspicion from other whites even if whites are known to commit a particular type of crime.

Therefore if it is only natural that people are cautious of anyone who fits the racial profile of people who commit a certain type of crime how come white people do not view other white men as potential serial killers, paedophiles and domestic terrorists since these are crimes that white men tend to commit much more than any other race of men?
cap28, when you say white people do not view other white men as potential serial killers and all sorts, are you stating the facts or just generalizing? Because, where I live, anyone who exhibits such traits is suspected and possibly reported regardless of the person's race.

Foreign AffairsMy thoughts on Tim Wise's "Understanding the Power of Whiteness" by infonubia(op):
In his latest article titled "Terrorism and Privilege: Understanding the Power of Whiteness," Tim Wise, a renowned anti-racism activist, talked about understanding the power of whiteness as it relates to terrorism and privilege in the context of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Here is an excerpt from Wise's essay:

White privilege is knowing that even if the Boston Marathon bomber turns out to be white, his or her identity will not result in white folks generally being singled out for suspicion by law enforcement, or the TSA, or the FBI.
White privilege is knowing that even if the bomber turns out to be white, no one will call for whites to be profiled as terrorists as a result, subjected to special screening, or threatened with deportation.

White privilege is knowing that if the bomber turns out to be white, he or she will be viewed as an exception to an otherwise non-white rule, an aberration, an anomaly, and that he or she will be able to join the ranks of Tim McVeigh and Terry Nichols and Ted Kaczynski and Eric Rudolph and Joe Stackand George Metesky and Byron De La Beckwith and Bobby Frank Cherry and Thomas Blanton and Herman Frank Cash and Robert Chambliss and James von Brunn and Robert Mathews and David Laneand Michael F. Griffin and Paul Hill and John Salvi and James Kopp and Luke Helder and James David Adkisson and Scott Roeder and Shelley Shannon and Dennis Mahon and Wade Michael Page andByron Williams and Kevin Harpham and William Krar and Judith Bruey and Edward Feltus andRaymond Kirk Dillard and Adam Lynn Cunningham and Bonnell Hughes and Randall Garrett Cole and James Ray McElroy and Michael Gorbey and Daniel Cowart and Paul Schlesselman and Frederick Thomas and Paul Ross Evans and Matt Goldsby and Jimmy Simmons and Kathy Simmons and Kaye Wiggins and Patricia Hughes and Jeremy Dunahoe and David McMenemy and Bobby Joe Rogers and Francis Grady and Demetrius Van Crocker and Floyd Raymond Looker, among the pantheon of white people who engage in (or have plotted) politically motivated violence meant to terrorize and kill, but whose actions result in the assumption of absolutely nothing about white people generally, or white Christians in particular.

And white privilege is being able to know nothing about the crimes committed by most of the terrorists listed above — indeed, never to have so much as heard most of their names — let alone to make assumptions about the role that their racial or ethnic identity may have played in their crimes.

White privilege is knowing that if the Boston bomber turns out to be white, we will not be asked to denounce him or her, so as to prove our own loyalties to the common national good. It is knowing that the next time a cop sees one of us standing on the sidewalk cheering on runners in a marathon, that cop will say exactly nothing to us as a result.

White privilege is knowing that if you are a white student from Nebraska — as opposed to, say, a student from Saudi Arabia — that no one, and I mean no one would think it important to detain and question you in the wake of a bombing such as the one at the Boston Marathon.

And white privilege is knowing that if this bomber turns out to be white, the United States government will not bomb whatever corn field or mountain town or stale suburb from which said bomber came, just to ensure that others like him or her don’t get any ideas. And if he turns out to be a member of the Irish Republican Army we won’t bomb Belfast. And if he’s an Italian American Catholic we won’t bomb the Vatican.
My thoughts:

The article raises awareness to the reality of home grown terrorism and fact that many of us are oblivious to the fact that the face of terror has no color. We are quick to profile (sometimes subconsciously) other races while giving a white person (or people) a pass.

On the other hand, Tim didn't address why the society act in this manner. I believe if most acts of terror were committed by Europeans (for example), the attention turns on anybody with an European accent. Its just our natural instinct. Its like being robbed several times by someone in an orange shirt. Naturally one becomes suspicious around anybody wearing an orange shirt. The series of major terrorist events that has taken place over the years has been attributed a particular group of people and it is only natural to be cautious around anyone with the same mannerism as people that belong to this group.

FashionSaggy Pants In Louisiana? That'll Be 50 Bucks, Sir! by infonubia(op): 4:19am On Apr 18, 2013
What better way to begin this interesting discussion than to remind readers of the famous pants on the ground video. On Wednesday April 10th, Louisiana's Terrebonne Parish approved a ban on saggy pants and skirts that "expose the skin or undergarments."

According to the new law, first time offenders pay $50 fine, $100 for the second, and $100 plus 16 hours of public service for each subsequent offense.

There are several arguments about the origin of sagging but the general consensus is that it started in prison. "The problem is our young men are emulating prisoners. It sends a sign that you're available for sex. It's a bad example to set," said council member Russell Hornsby.

While I'm not a fan of sagging, I'm not sure if this issue warrants another legislation. I think there are lots of pressing issues that need attention than saggy pants. I must also add that I don't live in Terrebonne Parish so I don't know how "bad" the issue is. However, I do know that the society frowns upon sagging but not to the point of banning it.

What do you think? Do you feel uncomfortable around someone who sags? Share your thoughts.

MMotimo: A lot of these raaapes are occurring at parties after the gals have had too much alcohol - don't know the specifics of this case. Is it too much to ask that teens don't get drunk? Too many of this scenario in the news lately. By the way, who is raising these teen raaapists?
That's another dimension to the story that I didn't really talk about. I would think there would be some kind of adult supervision in this 16-year old sleepover. Its just a really sad story...Thanks for your input MMotimo

Also, I think the society is gradually become desensitized to some of these issues. Just go to a pre-K school, you'd be surprised at some of the things these children say/know.

armyofone: the case is just sickening. r.aped her, wrote stuff like 'joey was here on her v.aginia, thigh etc, took pix and posted them shocked cry. God, I pray those boys rot in prison.
once you are aware your child is being bullied, talk to the school. If the school is unwilling to take action like the case above, go to the police. If bullying continue, look for another school for your child.
Great comment armyofone. I think most parents will take action once they are aware. Unfortunately, lots of parents are left in the dark when it comes to the issues gravely affecting their children. sad

For folks that haven't been following the story, this is a photo of Audrie Pott, a 15-year-old California girl who committed suicide after her alleged sexual assault went viral. Audrie hung herself, allegedly after three teenage boys sexually assaulted her, took photos, and spread them around her school.

She expressed her grief on her Facebook message to a friend saying that her life is ruined by the dastardly act. "I cried when I found out what they did," she wrote in one of such posts. And then she killed herself few days later.

The Pott family demand that the three 16-year-old boys be arrested and not only tried as adults, but be tried for murder.

However, the focus of this post is on our moral compass as a society. As a dad to a 3-year-old daughter, my heart is broken for the the Pott family. But most importantly, I feel sad because these despicable acts happen around us all the time. It's not an American problem, it is happening on every continent and most times the victims are too fearful to talk about it.

As parents, are we spending enough time with our children? Can our children be open and honest with us about anything and everything? What values are we instilling in our young ones?

I ask these questions because it was reported that Audrie wouldn't talk to her mother about what happened. I leave it to the child development specialists and the psychologist to figure out why. I want to believe that trust building starts from when our kids are little. Allowing them to express exactly how they feel without unnecessarily shutting them up goes a long way.

Through our busy schedules, it's important to let our children have an avenue to unwind after the day is over. Engage them in dialogues about their day. Children pick up a lot from daycare/schools. These talks help find out how the child thinks and provide an opportunity to correct any wrong notion.

This is not just peculiar to female, it applies to all children. We should protect our children as much as possible. Know where they are and what they do. There have been numerous instances of children being abused by family members.

Audrie's story began with a sleepover at a friend's place that led to consumption of alcohol. The boys that perpetrated this evil act are considered friends. Yet, they are accused of assaulting Audrie and taking photos of their assault. Apparently, they later destroyed the evidence in an attempt to cover their tracks.

What can we do as a society to curb these excesses?

Feel free to join in the conversation. There are lots of points that wasn't discussed in this post. I'd love to read your comment and I'll respond accordingly.

Family11-year Old Ends Up In ER After Being Spanked by infonubia(op):
Is it OK to let someone else spank your child? How about spanking your child at school, in the principal’s office or in front of her classmates? 11-year old Jordyn Booth whose mom opted for in-school spanking (3 spanks) rather than a 3-day suspension recently filed a police report for child abuse. Her daughter’s pain was so severe that she was taken to the ER at St. Francis Hospital. She was there for four days.

East Columbus Magnet Academy had called Yancie to inform her Jordyn was misbehaving. What did she do? The school said Jordyn bullied another student when she drew a picture of him with long pigtails when his hair is actually short. Is that enough reason to spank a child?

Foreign AffairsJet Missed Runway Landing In The Resort Island Of Bali by infonubia(op): 5:20am On Apr 15, 2013
Passengers set out to have a great time at a resort island of Bali were in for a ride. A new Lion Air passenger jet, Boeing 737-800 missed the runway as it prepared to land at the Bali airport on Saturday. All seven crew members and 101 passengers were evacuated from the jet safely. Some were rescued in water boats while others swam out of the wreck. Twelve passengers reportedly suffered slight injuries and were released from the local hospitals today.

Officials noted that warning was given to the passengers before the jet crashed. Indonesian Transportation ministry official are still investigating the incident. The pilots and co-pilots have been tested for alcohol and drugs, which came out negative. Ruth Simatupang, a former investigation at the national Safety Transportation Committee suspects there was probably a miscalculation of the landing.

Currently Lion has been banned from flying to Europe because of several safety issues that have accrued over the years. Though Indonesia is amazingly growing in the Asian airline markets, it falls short in providing qualified pilots, mechanics, and updated airport technology that promotes airline safety.
