European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)David Beckham Retires From Professional Soccer by infonubia(op): 5:31pm On May 16, 2013
David Beckham through his representative, announced today that he will retire from professional soccer at the end of the season.

The 38-year-old midfielder and long time captain of the English national team (2000 - 2006) is one of the few players who have played for top clubs in major leagues. He played for Manchester United (England), Real Madrid (Spain), Los Angeles Galaxy (U.S), AC Milan (Italy), and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) where he recently won the French Ligue 1 championship.

During his time with Manchester United, Beckham won six league titles, two FA Cups and one Champions League. He won the Spanish league title before moving to L.A Galaxy. He spent two loan spells at Milan and then returned to Europe when he signed with PSG.

Beckham is credited for putting the U.S. Major League Soccer (MLS) on map with his 2007 move to L.A Galaxy where he won two MLS Cup titles.

On the field, he will be remembered for his ability to take free-kicks and bend the ball.

Wishing him a happy retirement.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)A Fan's Tribute To Sir Alexander Chapman Ferguson by infonubia(op): 4:11am On May 16, 2013
The entire Sporting was in shocked when reports leaked on twitter late last Wednesday evening that Manchester United Manager, Sir Alex Ferguson was set to retire at the end of the season at 26 years in charge and everyone’s worst fears was confirmed when the Club released a statement the following morning to confirm the news.

Almost immediately, the question of his successor came up. No one was really sure how the Red Devils will go about it, is it the same procedure as electing a new Pope? This question was answered when the Club announced the appointment of Everton manager David Moyes, with Sir Alex moving upstairs to take up a position as a Director and Ambassador of the Club.

BusinessDo It Now - 6 Tips For Overcoming Procrastination by infonubia(op): 1:49am On May 15, 2013
"Time is really the only capital that any human being has, and the only thing he can't afford to loose." - Thomas Edison

Do you procrastinate? You are not alone. Everyone procrastinates sometimes. However, about 20 percent of people admit that they chronically avoid difficult tasks that need to be performed and intentionally look for other things to do.

The truth is, procrastination is a choice; a choice not to do it now. With every choice comes its consequence. Life itself is about choices. I am a product of my choices - both good and bad.

Until lately, I always make excuses for putting things off till the last minute. I justify my behavior by saying things like "I perform better under pressure."

The good news? It is possible to overcome procrastination - with effort

Let's explore these 6 tips to overcoming procrastination. Shall we?

1. Understand that being busy is not the same as being productive.

What are you focused on? Don't focus on what doesn't add value to your productivity. People who are highly productive are often less busy because they are focused on the right task at the right time. They are often less busy than those who are overworked and overwhelmed.

Also, avoid committing to what you really don't want to do. If you don't want to do it, you are more likely to put it at the bottom of your list and you are never going to get to it.

2. Write a list of what needs to be done.

Most times I made a mental note of what needs to be done. This often gets me in trouble because I tend to forget things till the last minute. Writing it down gives you a clearer picture of what exactly you should be working on and you are able to allot some appropriate time to each task.

3. Prioritize your list.

Prioritizing your list helps put things in perspective. It helps make sure you channel your energy towards the important stuff. While at this, break each task into smaller, manageable chunk. This technique is used a lot in project management. Breaking tasks into sub-tasks makes the work easier by narrowing your focus on one sub-task at a time.

4. Set reminders.

Set a reminder on your phone, calendar, email or anything that reminds you of the task. Schedule some time to do at least part of the work. If you are not able to spend an hour, schedule about 10 to 20 minutes. Just make sure you commit to working on the task for a very short time.

5. Psych yourself up.

By psyching yourself up, I mean increasing your motivation. What motivates you? For some people a reward system works well. You can reward yourself after completing a task. Psychologists call it positive reinforcement. It's just something to look forward to. Another good practice is reading and meditating on quotes that spur you into action. See my post on inspirational quotes if you need to draw strength from great quotes.

6. Be accountable to someone.

Getting an accountability partner helps keep you on your toes. Someone who will always check with you to make sure you are doing what you committed to work on. My wife does a great job at keeping me accountable. Not only does she make sure I don't forget what I need to get done, she also makes sure I do it at the scheduled time.

These are some of the things I do to overcome procrastination. Are there things you do differently to overcome/avoid pushing thing off? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

Foreign AffairsJudge Jails Lawyer And Client Over Late Arrival by infonubia(op): 4:39am On May 12, 2013
I couldn't help but laugh when I came across this story about a Becks County Judge who ordered a Philadelphia attorney and his client to be locked up for arriving 50 minutes late for a jury selection.

Here's how the American Bar Association Journal reports the story:

When a Philadelphia lawyer and his client arrived 50 minutes late for jury selection in a drug case on Monday, a Pennsylvania judge jailed them both.

Holding lawyer B. David Marcial in contempt and upping the bond for his client, Jesus O. Ortiz, from $120,000 to $3 million, Judge Stephen B. Lieberman of Berks County ordered both held in the courthouse cellblock, reports the Reading Eagle.

"We were all here at 9 a.m. for a jury trial and the defense table was empty," said the judge, who had dismissed the prospects not long before the two arrived. "We wasted a jury panel."

Four hours later, Lieberman had both brought before him for a hearing. Marcial, who must also pay a $1,000 fine within 60 days or serve 10 days in prison, explained that personal problems kept him up late and then a receptionist at a local hotel failed to give him a wake-up call, the newspaper recounts. He left the courthouse after the hearing but Ortiz was transported to the county jail.
I'm certain the lawyer will make sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before scheduled time on his next appointment.

Do you think the judge was too harsh?

PhonesNOKIA Debuts Asha 501, Its Latest Phone In India by infonubia(op): 4:17am On May 12, 2013
Nokia debuts Asha, a small smartphone with touch-screen effect. The goal is to push their latest creation into the market and disturb their competitors. Perhaps it’ll develop into a terrifying bargaining chip against Microsoft Phones.

Why should I get Asha 501? I’m not a Nokia sales representative. Apparently, the new phone is part of Nokia’s low-priced line of handsets designed to attract users that are not tech savvy. There are still average citizens out there who only care about making phone calls and texts. Of course, this means Asha has very few features that sell at a very low price point. Nokia chose to announce the handset in India – one of the largest emerging markets in the world. The phone’s name is also India-influenced.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Alex Ferguson Retired From Manchester United Because Of Excess Stress by infonubia(op): 2:12am On May 11, 2013
“Sir Alex Ferguson left Manchester United because of excess stress,” says Capello. The former England boss was initially surprised by the 71-year-old's decision to retire from football management after an exchange they had a few months ago. But, during phone call with Capello on Thursday, the Scot revealed how he wanted to escape the mental pressure of challenging for prizes at Old Trafford after 26 years in the job.

"I met Ferguson a few months ago at the Football Association's national football centre and he told me that he would continue, the news of the retirement surprised me," Capello told Sky Italia. "I called him yesterday and he told me that he decided [to step down] due to excess stress. Always having to win is something is very challenging and he told me he wanted to go around the world with his wife."

Ferguson will be given an emotional send off at Old Trafford when United takes on Swansea on Sunday. The Premier League champions will also be handed their trophy and winners' medals following the game, marking the manager's 13th title success during his tenure.

Christianity EtcCan A Christian Be Possessed? by infonubia(op): 5:16pm On May 08, 2013
Deliverance is a controversial issue. Even Jesus Christ was accused of driving out demons by the power of Beelzebub, the "prince of demons" (Mark 12:24) when he commanded unclean spirits to get out.

After attending so many deliverance services, a friend wanted to know if it is biblical for Christians (born-again) to be delivered. In other words, can Christians be possessed? Why do some churches focus so much on deliverance?

The conversation started on Facebook and I'm putting it up here so readers can chime in.

Foreign AffairsAre Bombings The New Reality Of Our Time? by infonubia(op):
Are incessant bombings here to stay? Is it just one of those occurrences that will die naturally? Is what we are witnessing nothing compared to historical events?

These are some of the questions running through my mind as I write this post. Initially I dismissed the thoughts of writing about bombings since there's been a fair amount of bombings reported on this blog since its inception.

However, I just couldn't wrap my head around how there's been so much news about bombings and religious violence in the past couple of years. Some might argue that there have been worst bombings in history, but the frequency of violence in our present day is alarming (in my opinion).

Just in the past month, there's been a plethora of bombings reported in places like Boston, Afghanistan, Somalia, Nigeria, Libya, Iraq, and lots of other countries around the world. Just this past weekend, there were reports of bomb blasts in Tanzania and Pakistan. You can be rest assured that there will be more to come. World leaders are trying to curtail this rise in tide but it's been a very challenging effort.

I was taken aback by a comment on an article I posted on a forum regarding the response of the Nigerian government to recent bombings compared with the U.S. response to the Boston bomb blast. The reader ended his comment by saying "quit complaining, Nigerians are not. We are indeed the happiest people on earth." At that moment, it dawned on me that people are beginning to get used to this happenings, we are indeed becoming desensitized to the magnitude of these senseless killings. I'm sure there are several others who share the same sentiments as this reader.

I remember attending a church service and one of the ministers, in his prayers said "there's something in us that is about to explode." I immediately opened my eyes and looked around for any suspicious person waiting to explode. After the prayer, I jokingly told the person next to me that "this prayer is so 1999, you wouldn't want to pray this at the airport." In this era of political correctness, every "wrong" word could potentially escalate into a conflict. This is a testament to how much things have changed over the last few years. Words that were used innocently in past have become taboo words due to these horrific events.

A lot of the bombings can be traced to radical religious intolerance. This is not necessarily a case of Islamist extremists versus Christians, or any other religion. If so, how do we explain the violence between the Shiite and the Sunni Muslims in Iraq? Last week there were reports of violence between Buddhists and Muslims in Burma. Similarly, a Muslim - Coptic Christian violence was reported in Egypt last month. When people cannot look at other people of different faith and accept them just for who they are but rather, we turn to violence at a means of subduing each other.

In subsequent posts, we will be exploring possible solutions (if any) to this menace of bombings and violence in general.

Meanwhile, what can we do to protect ourselves and our loved ones? What precautions should be taken to reduce the chances of being a victim of these happenings.

Share your thoughts and be sure to share this post with as many as possible.

Nairaland GeneralLove, Money, Health...pick Only Two! by infonubia(op): 11:59pm On May 05, 2013
If you had two choices between love, money and good health, which will you choose? I figured picking only one is almost impossible as it seem like one is useless without the other (my opinion).

A very good friend sent this article and I'd like to share it with InfoNubia readers. Happy Reading...

What will you pick? What will be the opportunity cost? Will you choose money over love or health over money? Will you think "what is money without health?" or say "love conquers all." Some argue that love without money lends itself to a life filled with frustration and bitterness. A counter argument is "how would the money be spent if you don't love yourself?" Others say health is wealth, so love and health is okay.

People will always argue over these things; we argue on if money matters more than love or love more than health or love is just enough. Some will say "you are an hypocrite against your faith if you think love doesn't exist, God is love. How then do you day God exists if you don't believe in love?"

There are healthy people who live and die in penury. This debunks the health is wealth saying. It 's only the love of God that is selfless and abounds, if not, why do people fall in and out of love? This is why I say love is subjective. Love will come with health and money but money can never buy true love. And, what is money without good health?

Regardless of whatever you choose, humans will always gravitate towards that which they feel is lacking, looking to better themselves, searching the greener pastures while inadvertently neglecting that which they have without realizing the green grass is enough and greener might not be better.

I have seen the wealthy crying to be loved and the poor ignoring their loved ones to chase after money. People loose their health in pursuit of wealth and are unable to regain the good health after they get wealthy. Some leave money just to find love while the healthy ones cry for love and riches.

In all these, I've come to realize that whether you are a jobless college graduate with good health and love, a sick rich person who is well loved, or a healthy person without loved ones, the world is too complicated to pick two without the other. We need them all!
I'd much rather have them all. The evidence of love is in giving but how can you give what you don't have? I choose to love, be healthy, and wealthy!

Foreign AffairsGlobal Poverty Is Falling, So What's The Problem? by infonubia(op): 3:21pm On May 03, 2013
Here's an interesting article I read on cnn. Please read and share your thoughts..

Watching countries from around the world grow and prosper, we tend to assume that global poverty is falling. And in fact, the World Bank says that in 1981 nearly half of the world's citizens were impoverished, that is, they lived on less than $1.25 a day. And today, less than a fifth of the world's population lives in poverty. In raw numbers, that translates to a 40 percent drop from about 2 billion to 1.2 billion people.

But when we dig deeper, it’s clear the picture is more murky. Put simply, most of the reduction in global poverty has to do with one country – China. Take it out of the equation and the numbers look very different.

Let's go back to 1981. Back then, China accounted for 43 percent of the world's poor. The other major contributors were South Asia, with 29 percent, and sub-Saharan Africa, with 11 percent. Fast forward just a decade, and you'll see that China's share of the world's poor began to drop. The trend continues through the 2000s. By 2010, China accounted for only 13 percent of the world's impoverished population. South Asia's share had jumped to 42 percent, while sub-Saharan Africa's share tripled, to 34 percent.

The World Bank data shows that the total number of impoverished Chinese declined by nearly 680 million people in the last three decades. That's about 95 percent of the total global decline. By registering double digit growth for three decades, Beijing has transformed the fortunes of a poor nation within a generation. That's amazing, but it tells you that in the rest of the world, progress has been much, much slower – if there's been progress at all.

There's a lesson here for other developing countries.

Take India, for example. New Delhi has also made strides against poverty. The problem is, those strides have only been a few steps ahead of population growth. Look at the numbers. In 1981, 429 million Indians lived in poverty – about 60 percent of the population. By 2010, the percentage of impoverished people had dropped to 33 percent. And yet the total number of Indians living in poverty was still around 400 million. Why? You see, India's population had expanded by about half a billion. For all the millions who were lifted out of poverty, millions of others were born into it.

What's the answer? Growth. In the 1960s and 70s India was infamously stuck in a rut of slow growth, a mediocre 2 percent a year often. Then, in the 1980s, it began opening up, and in the 1990s New Delhi scrapped much of the old socialist set of controls. By the mid-2000s, India was growing at around 9 percent. That growth helped create India's middle class, and dramatically reduced the number of people living in poverty. But according to the pro-free-market Cato Institute, if those reforms had taken place two decades earlier, India would today have fewer impoverished people: 175 million fewer. That's why India's recent drop in economic growth is alarming – those most affected will be the poor.

Africa is also changing, but for its poorest, change is still too slow. Since 1981, poverty rates have been dropping steadily in both the developing world, and the world as a whole. But in sub-Saharan Africa poverty rates actually got slightly worse in the 1980s and 90s. It has only recently begun to turn the corner, again, thanks in large part to faster economic growth.

Global poverty is falling. But China deserves most of the credit. And thanks to the Communist Party of China, we now know that the path to poverty alleviation is…capitalist-led growth.

FamilyNew Born Abandoned On The Sand At Hawaii Beach by infonubia(op): 8:56pm On May 02, 2013
A baby girl was dumped and found crying in the sand at a Hawaii beach shortly after she was born. According to the Department of Human Services Director Patricia McManaman said the 8-pound new born was "abandoned immediately after birth."

It's so sad that a human being could be regarded as trash left in the sand. This baby could have been taken away by the tide, an animal,or anything. Thankfully, a woman found the baby and took her to the hospital where she's responding nicely and feeding very well.

I cannot help but wonder why a mother or anyone would do this to a day old baby. How much value do we place on life? There's no telling what this child could be in future. The irony of the situation is that there are folks out there that are hoping and praying to have a children yet, some are lucky enough to have children and choose not to value them.

Few days ago, I posted the story about a UK mom who forced her 14-year-old daughter to be a surrogate mother all because she desperately wanted a fourth child but couldn't bare one by herself. Maybe if the woman had found someone who was ready to donate a baby, she wouldn't go as far with her daughter.

Honestly, I try to empathize with feelings of fear, confusion, and pain the mothers that abandon their babies feel at the time of childbirth, but I just don't understand not taking the baby for a safe location. If anything, give the baby up for adoption.

You may wonder why I assumed the baby's mother committed this atrocious act. It's because no one has come to claim the baby yet. There's been no calls to the police about a missing baby, no family member has called to claim the poor child.

There are lots of unanswered questions surrounding the identity of the baby's parent. All we can do at this point is to speculate about what could possibly have led someone to abandon a baby by the beach.

If no one comes forward to claim the baby by the end of the week, the Department of Human Services will file a petition with family court, asking for custody.

There are other points I didn't touch on. Share your thoughts and don't be afraid to disagree or touch on other important points!

Christianity EtcShould Churches Pay Speaking Fees To Guest Speakers? How Much Is Too Much? by infonubia(op): 2:06am On May 02, 2013
In the news today, there's a story about former Green Bay Packers safety Leroy Butler whose speaking engagement at a church was canceled because he tweeted congratulations to NBA player Jason Collins, who revealed on Monday that he is gay. You can read more about the story on Yahoo.

What really got my attention was the differences in opinion over the $8,500 speaking fee that the Wisconsin church was supposed to pay Butler for the July speaking engagement. Is that a lot of money for the church to pay a speaker? Unfortunately, there are no standard speaking rates and I'm not too familiar with church administration. To be paid such amount, the speaker should have a lot to offer.

Here's is the issue:

Should churches pay speakers for their appearance?

There are support of both sides of this argument, and I don't want to argue that one side is necessarily right. I just want to throw some thoughts out there and start a discussion.

So, in no particular order, here are my thoughts on the issue:

1. Many speakers rely on their income to survive

Many who speak have bills to pay and families to feed. They rely on their speaking income to live. They can't do things for free all the time, and the Scripture says that "the worker is worthy of his wages."

A lot of time goes into speaking. An effective speech takes hours of preparation and the time spent on preparing could be spent on something else - time with families and loved ones. If speakers were never to be paid, it is unlikely that they would continue to work hard like most speakers do.

Also many speakers employ people to do a lot of the administrative duties. These staff members also have to be paid. Even those without staff have to cover costs of maintaining websites, creating publication materials, travel costs, maintaining the home office, and so on.

2. Speakers who don't charge aren't as valued.

People value what they pay for, they don't place too much value of what is free. If the church has paid, there is an expectation that the speaker will be insightful and meaningful. Paid events are taken more seriously and the church invests time and energy into ensuring the success of such events.

Just as with any organization, there is an expectation to pay for good service. In fact, no organization will take seriously any professional who offers free services all the time. Free services could be a sign of incompetence.

3. Church members shouldn't bear the brunt of the speaking fees

I don't believe the burden of payment should be passed on to the congregation. Speaking fees should already be included in the church's budget for the year. I've seen some churches raise special offering to cover the speakers' fee.

In cases where the speaker is not paid, it's okay to raise love offering to cover the speakers cost but this should not be the norm for every speaking engagement.

4. Churches shouldn't invite guest speakers all the time

While I enjoy occasional guest speakers, I'm not a big fan of churches having special events all the time. Some churches have frequent special services that requires them to invite guest speakers.

Imagine having one special event every month where the guest speaker is paid $8,500 per event, that amounts to $102,000 per year. Some of that money could be put to better use if the special events are held quarterly, or semi-annually.

So, what do you think? Should churches limit how much speakers are paid? But is it wrong for speakers to ask for money? Certainly not. They are offering a service that cost time and money.

Those are my thoughts. Please share yours and feel free to disagree!

CrimeVideo: Intended Victim Turns The Table On Armed Robber by infonubia(op): 2:09pm On May 01, 2013
A New Orleans man turned the table on his attacker when he grabbed the attacker's shotgun and caused him to flee. A nearby surveillance camera captured the incident.

According to WWL.com, the robber came back moments later to demand for his gun.

Here's how WWL reports it:

According to police, the victim was approached moments later by two black males in a black four door sedan. The victim told police that the driver of the car said "give me my gun back and I'll give you your phone that you dropped."
An NOPD spokesman says the intended victim declined to return the shotgun back to the robber, but instead used the weapon to strike and knock out the rear windshield of the vehicle.
This is what happens when the haunter becomes hunted...lol.

FamilyRe: UK Mom Forced 14-year-old Daughter To Become A Surrogate Mother by infonubia(op):
taryour: If I may ask, what the hell does she want more kids for after having 3 adopted kids? Because she dosnt have kids of her own for whatever reason,or dosnt have a womb is not enough to treat that 14 year old as such. Some pple are just heartless.
That's what baffles me. Why does she desperately want another child? It just goes to show how twisted people's minds are. You never know who's standing next to you. I won't be surprised if she's got some sympathizers- people who could find a reason to justify the woman's action.

FamilyUK Mom Forced 14-year-old Daughter To Become A Surrogate Mother by infonubia(op): 5:56pm On Apr 29, 2013
In a culture where pregnant teens become famous by starring in shows like MTV's "Teen Mom" and "16 and Pregnant," one woman desperate for another child forced her 14-year-old adopted daughter to inseminate herself with donor sperm so she could provide her with another child.

Despite the unidentified teen having a miscarriage at age 14, she was forced to continue trying and went on to have a baby two years later at age 16.

According to court documents, the woman, who already adopted three child, planned the pregnancy after being denied approval to adopt a fourth child. She cited unspecified health condition and elective sterilization as the reasoning for asking her daughter to inseminate herself with syringes of sperm purchased over the internet from an international sperm-bank network based in Denmark.

The daughter told investigators she was "shocked, pretty shocked" when her mother asked her but also thought, "if I do this...maybe she will love me more."

The mother was apprehended by authorities after the birth of the teen's child when midwives at the hospital witnessed the mother refusing to let the teen breastfeed or hold the child. "We don't want any of that attachment thing," said the mother.

The woman is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for child cruelty.

I believe in addition to the prison sentence, this woman also needs to be psychologically examined. I don't want to believe she is in her right senses.

Foreign AffairsIt's Fire For Fire Between Israel And Hamas by infonubia(op): 6:56am On Apr 29, 2013
Israel swiftly responded to rockets fired from the Strip to Southern Israel with airstrike on Hamas target in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli military said on Sunday.

The military said its jets struck " a terrorist weapon storage facility and Hamas training installation" early Sunday. Health officials in Gaza said nobody was hurt.

Since the military campaign in November 2012, there's been a decline in rocket fire from Gaza. However, there's been random fire.

The military said it "will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians" and vowed not to allow the current situation return to the how things were prior to November.

Israel holds Gaza's militant Hamas rulers responsible for all attacks from the territory, including the most recent attack. No group claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Morale of the story:

Don't mess with Israel, they will always respond. See how they responded to the Anonymous Arab cyber attack situation.

FamilyLiar Liar: Woman Arrested For Faking 9-year-old Son's Cancer And Collecting Mone by infonubia(op): 4:09am On Apr 28, 2013
Susan Stillwaggon, a 35-year-old New Jersey woman was arrested this week and charged with lying to multiple people that her son had cancer. She even lied to the 9-year-old boy himself.

Stillwaggon told family and friends that her son was diagnosed with cancer, and accepted fundraising from them. According to the police, the mother of four spread the news through word of mouth and her Facebook page that her son had a type of lymphoma.

Officials were alerted after they received a call from the child's elementary school because the school officials became suspicious.

One cannot help but wonder the kind of morals she instills in her children. It's mind-boggling what people will do for money.

Stillwaggon was charged with third-degree theft by deception, third-degree forgery, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and second-degree using a juvenile to commit a criminal offence, CBS Philly reported.
