There is also a saying that home is where the heart is.  Some people find their place in this world, it may be where they grew up, it may be somewhere they visited, or the place they settled.

A place you visited = you are just a visitor.
A place you settled = you are a but a settler.
A place you grew up = you are a temporal resident.
Place of your ancestors = your home.

Invisible, chill out, and wind your neck in.

One thing remains - home's where the heart is. Some Nigerians also happen to have been born in the United Kingdom, United States or elsewhere. You seem to be making a blanket assumption, that even Nigerians that travelled out of Nigeria, have abandoned their families. You've also assumed their families are not in their countries of residence.

As for Nigerians abroad not sending "goodies" back to their relatives in Nigeria - how do you know they don't? Or do you expect them to send you an email, informing you of each time they've made remittances to any of their relatives in Nigeria? Threads like this one are a dime a dozen - there have been over 30 of them on Nairaland, since this forum sprung up, and there will continue to be. The views shared will remain the same, dependent on where you regard as home.

Not only goodis, u will get microwave from abroad, greedy things

Where is this coming from? I am not sure if this is done out of jealousy or the OP just have a lot of time on her hands. Either way, I think it is an affront on the entire diaspora Nigerians that some sex starved chic thinks that  some hardworking folks in foreign countries have the time to think about how they are being missed , or not, in Nigeria. This is what you should do: Try carrying out a research on the living standard of Nigerians with families abroad Vs. those who do not have families. abraod.

On the research part, you will be shocked! Those families with diasporeans are poorer by far. Always waiting for feeding money, school fees and house rent money which may never come. One abroad 'big boy' even had the audacity to send 200 dollars through me to his wife and four kids! I had to supplement the money from my pocket to pay their landlord before he throws them out.

There is no doubt that there are many Nigerians who travelled out and things turned out badly , but there are those who made it as well.
There are many Nigerians in Nigeria who left their villages to lagos or Abuja and things never turn out the way they planned and going back to the village becomes a nightmare, they spend yrs on and never visit. There is no smooth ride anywhere in life.

Wht i don't understand about some of you moaning about Nigerians abroad not sending gold and silver home everyday is by whos standard are you judging them? Yours or God?

Anybody in Nigeria not visiting his village will have visits from his relatives regularly. We can easily send garri, yam and native fowls for them. Tell me if it will be easy to pay DHL for same package to the US.
If you cannot send goodies from abroad, we have to judge you harshly because you are not perfoming your own share of family work. Its better you return and be weeding your mumsie's cassava farm or replacing your dad in his suya hawking business under the flyover!

People like you are stiring up this hatred between Nigerians outside Nigeria and those at home, many Nigerians abroad have great relationships with their families and friends back home but sometimes we read from grumpy old uncles like you moaning about your achievements and your dozen kids, i don't just get it.

There you o again with your 'many Nigerians abroad' quotes. I ask again, what of those we have not heard from in 15 years since they travelled? Some have even changed their names and are peeping from far away lands and waiting for their dads to die so they can come home to divide his properties.
If that is your idea of a great relationship then rant on.

Some of your comments sound very silly, so those outdie Nigeria can't have kids where they are? Living well? Do they need to come back to Nigeria to achieve all that?

Daily, they come back to marry, and get her pregnant, anandon her to her fate and be promising to come and pick her up later when his papers are complete.
The worst are those young girls 'tied' up in marriages to those that run away again, leaving her confused and lonely, while the guy is married to his older white lady.

oyinda.:

I don't understand the point of this topic. Most people have the freedom to return to naija if they want. Or to return to the US if they are visiting naija.Regret applies more to permanent change. something you cannot change. Most people responding to this topic are still young and dynamic. They still have lots of choices and options. No permanent change has occured yet and still have the idea of the "american dream" etc

It is best to pose this question to elderly nigerians who have lived decades abroad and are about to retire home etc. They are the ones who can explain better if their extended time abroad has been well worth it.
because if you are still living abroad and have no plans of coming home to settle anytime soon, obviously you don't have regrets!! how can you regret something you are still doing!!?
so the question should be posed to people who are coming back home. Or people who "life abroad" is a past experience for them. They are the ones, in my opinion, who have more authority in this subject matter.

I know two elderly people like that. Five years ago when I wanted to move abroad, one had to travel back just to advice me, (an uncle) there were tears in his eyes when he told me that the worst thing that will happen to his life is to allow me go out there and repeat his mistakes he made when he was my age. The tears of that old man was part of the things that made me stay back here. Now when he calls, he says "you see, I think I told you to stay back"

If most of you that condemn & beef those that live abroad had an open opportunity 2 leave Nigeria, i believe you wont think twice about packin your bags & baggages & headin to the airport. If e.g America were to make it visa free 4 Nigeria, believe me 90% of Nigerians will be out of there b4 night falls. Where would you rather have a quality education? Nigeria or abroad? Where would you rather have a house of your own where u got security, electricity, rule of law, quality health care etc Nigeria or abroad. Even your so called leaders know this, why do u think they rather send their kids abroad to school, own houses abroad etc. And 4 you Nigerians living a rich life abroad & expect the people to kiss your A@# becos u are rich like they do in Nigeria, well bleep y'all!!!! Thats why u are livin in a civilised society where nobody gives a damn how much u got or u make, cos here every1 has the same equal rights & nobody is above the law, Rich or Poor. so if u want some1 to kiss your A@# cos u are rich well go back to Nigeria where u can have u A$% kissed all day & do wateva & oppress the poor. Once again i say bleep y'all!!!!!!!! So instead of being myopic try & better urself, improve urself rather than being ignorant. There's a sayin "I thot my father's farm was the biggest in the world until, Agreed there's no place like home but wherever u lay your head becomes your home.

Good points, that 90% that will readily leave Nigeria are the lazy, never do wells that dont belive in working hard and looking inwards to solve their problems. They are the chronically dis-satisfied brothers and sisters who want something for nothing, who think by just landing in US, their problems are over.

Alas, the truth hits them BAM! In the face when they get off the plane and see fellow Nigerians waiting at the airports begging for connection and business form you that just came in!

I am happy for you all who say they dont regret it, but I still feel bad when I remember those Nigerians languishing at the backyard of civilization, I mean those people that will never come here to say something, because they cannot afford internet connection.

Most of the posts here are ridiculous, why won't people just mind their own business, live and let others live- i guess that's not in Naija nature huh? If i decide to live outside Nigeria, whose business is it? Most Nigerian based contributors on here are just envious of people living outside Nigeria. There are Nigerians in U.S that are struggling and there are some that are doing great just as it is in the home land, but i’d rather struggle in the U.S than struggle in Nigeria. And Mind you, there are actually some of us that are doing great whether we live in Nigeria or abroad, i live in the U.S and currently working for the same multinational company i worked for in Nigeria, i can do the same stuff i was able to do in Naija except that i live in a much more sane society, most of the friends i have are in similar situation as mine and many are doing way better, they are all well educated and have professional jobs, they are competitive and have the kind of intellectual and technological exposures that average Nigerian worker is not used to, so the folks i know have the competitive edge any day and anywhere over their Nigerian counterparts. If y'all so much hate abroad, why do you keep coming here to have your babies? why not stay back and spend your vacations in Nigeria, they have basically turned my house into something else, it's either they are coming to have babies or coming for vacation, if you are so comfortable with where you are, why not stay back and do all your stuff in Nigeria then i will agree that you guys are really as patriotic as you claim. Bunch of hypocrites!

Your problem seems to be you are not making enough money and still think anyone will be envious of your broke azz. If you are comfortable you wouldnt be complaining about the few visitors you have over there. Where have brotherly love gone to? What of we in naija that have relatives living in our houses all year round?

since we're advocating for everyone to return 'home', how about nigerians living in other parts of the countries returning to their villages? afterall the non-yorubas living in lagos are working for the yorubas, just like nigerians abroad are working for whites. people have the right to decide where they want to live. i grew up in lagos and though i'm not yoruba it's home to me. i can't imagine living anywhere else in nigeria. home is where you feel at home. i'm from the niger delta region and have only been there a few times. i love my tribe and feel bad about the crisis even though i've never experienced what the residents experience. staying in lagos or elsewhere doesn't mean i'm denying my roots or i'm not patriotic. if home had to be your village, many NLers would be stuck in slums and would have limited opportunities. people migrate within and outside the country for basically the same reasons.

Sorry but non Yorubas living in Lagos dont work for yorubas, dont know where you got your info from but most are ibo and constitute more than 60% of the population, so they have the numeric advantage and language control. Many also own houses there.

But go and ask them how they flee from Lagos riots or how much they have lost in properties when trouble erupts. To call a foreign country home is the height of deceit.

REAL TRUTH:

Everybody can't stay or live in Nigeria,,,,It would be very silly, wicked and heartless of me to assume that because Nigeria is Ok for me,,,therefore, it should be oaky for everyone else. Its also silly and an act of foolish and blind patriotism for me to assume that Nigeria is the best place for all Nigerians to be in order for them to achieve their life dreams.
Its good enough to say the country has the potential to be better than what it is or has been all along,,,,but untapped potentials are just not sufficient enough. The truth is ,,,if Nigeria is not working for you,,and you have the means as long as its a legitimate one get out of the country. But if you think the country is treating you fine,,,,then good luck and stay back.
Too many avoidable things are wrong with Nigeria,,so mere patriotic statement can not fix it,,,even our political leaders know this. If things were very okay in Nigeria,,,there would not be groups like Save Nigeria Group. However, anybody wants to talk down on Nigerians abroad,,,for a group of people sending down atleast $10Billion to an economy yearly,,,,that is quite substantial and commendable.
As far as I know presently,, most people re suffering in Nigeria,,,it takes pretence not to admit this fact.Even our political leaders children do not even resides in the country,,,many wealthy Nigerians(criminals or not) have their funds outside the country because they themselves re not commited to the country.
Why do we have the Akunyili's daughters getting married to white Americans? Why MKO ABIOLA DAUGHTER(An Havard graduate getting married to a white?? Why is OBJ son(Muyiwa married to Bahamians and living his life in the US?? Even Adenuga's first son too refused to resides in Nigeria.
I read an interview by Dayo Adeneye last year,,,he said all his siblings ,,,except himself don't live in Nigeria. The truth is that there lots of Nigerians doing pretty well abroad(Particularly in the US),,,don't know else where though,,,

For those who moved legally, have good jobs and are caring for their families who cared for him during his younger years, there will be no problem. The problem is the negative picture we paint of ourselves in our greed to look for the easy way out. I wonder how many Americans who will run from their countries to stay here all because he wants to find a 'home' in Lagos.

The bottom line is money, our attempts to seek out easy wealth which most times lead to crime when we cannot legitimately acquire enough to satisfy our need.

If most Nigerians are suffering, it is as a direct result of their understanding about life, have it ever occured to you that staying in naija is also a choice, or that some people cannot take some dehumanizing treatments meted out to Nigerians abroad despite the money involved. Stripping women for toto, sorry total search is one of such.

As to why Nigerians marry whites, clearly for economic reasons. Those you mentioned may be affluent but the vast majority do so for social security. The white man will never trust, like you and for you to love the whites to the extent of marrying them is regrettable. For those of them that marry our girls, check surname of the girl and you will understand.

The save Nigeria group may have its own agendas so is no reason to conclude we are suffering. Its not the 10 billion dollars remitted that worries me, its the trillions lost to foreign govts as taxes and rates. Its the lost opportunites and brain drain tht should frighten us more.
