The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has asked the Nigerian Army to be courageous enough to accept responsibility of its action of attacking and molesting IPOB women during their Women’s Conference on May 19, 2017, in Abiriba, Abia State, instead of lying and trying to exonerate itself from its barbaric act. But in a swift reaction to the accusation, the Nigerian Army denied the allegation by the IPOB, saying nothing of such happened. IPOB in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Mr. Emma Powerful, alleged that “it has been the routine of the Nigerian Army and other military organizations, to lie and exonerate themselves any time they take an action in the public that seemed to tarnish their image in Nigeria and in the face of the international community. “It is unfortunate that the Nigerian Army would deny the attack, molestation and harassment of our mothers during their Women Conference in Abiriba, even when the pictures and videos of the foot soldiers are going viral on every social media platform. “It is also an act of cowardice for the Nigerian Army to claim that the 78 pictures already trending on the social media were photo-shopped and stage-managed by IPOB to ridicule the image of the Nigerian Army, when the Army in Nigeria and other military formations have at one time or the other done things that put their image at stake and ridiculed them in the face of Nigerians and the international community. So, this latest one is not the first and an exception. “We, the entire Biafrans and members of IPOB and our leadership worldwide led by Mr. Nnamdi Kanu wish to use this opportunity to highlight to the entire public that the Nigerian Army has lied again by trying to exonerate themselves from the attack and molestation of IPOB women during their annual conference in Abiriba, Abia State. “The Nigerian Army and police stormed the venue where the IPOB women were holding their women’s meeting with the intention of disrupting the meeting, molesting and arresting them, but to their surprise, all the women stood their ground and resisted them. They thought they were going to overpower them because they were women, but they saw a different Biafran women in action. “It is an indisputable fact from information, photographs and video shots available to us, that some women were arrested naked, and their arrest resulted to the other women protesting naked on the streets of Abiriba in Abia State.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/05/ipob-army-accept-responsibility-action-women/

The Supreme Court, will today, commence hearing on the protracted leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. A five-man panel of justices of the apex court, headed by Justice Musa Dattijo Mohammed, which earlier fixed May 25 to hear the matter, decided to bring the date forward, though no reason was adduced for the decision. Specifically, the case before the Supreme Court is an appeal challenging the judgment that declared Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the authentic national chairman of the party. The appeal was lodged by the Senator Ahmed Markafi-led caretaker committee of the party which was sacked by the Port Harcourt Division of the Court of Appeal on February 7 Meanwhile, the Sheriff-led faction of the party has given reasons the apex court should not hear the said appeal marked: SC/133/2017. The group, which identified itself to the Supreme Court as PDP’s National Executive Committee, NEC, with Sheriff as chairman and Prof. Wale Oladipo as secretary, maintained that the Makarfi-led committee, having been declared illegal by the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, lacked the vires to take decisions for the party, including initiating court proceedings in its name. In a written argument they filed for the appeal to be struck out, the Sheriff-led PDP insisted that Makarfi Committee did not obtain the necessary authorisation of the party to file an appeal in its name. In the written address he filed through a team of lawyers led by Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, Sheriff insisted that in view of the subsisting verdict of the appellate court, he remained the authentic leader of the party. He told the apex court that PDP under his leadership was comfortable with the appellate court verdict and had no intention to challenge it. Besides, the Sheriff-led group contended that decision of the Makarfi committee to file an appeal in the name of the PDP without authorisation, was not only illegal but also in violation of the party’s constitution. Relying on the provisions of Chapter 5, Articles 35(1), 36(1) and 42(1) of the PDP constitution, they argued that the party, with a corporate personality, could only act through the principal national officers, whose powers and functions are stated in the constitution. They referred to a May 18, 2016 judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital territory (FCT) in suit No: FCT/HC/CV/1443/2016, ordering a return to status quo as at May 18, 2016 and the subsequent judgment of the Federal High Court in suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/464/2016, to the effect that only the Sheriff NEC could instruct lawyers for the party, and urged the Supreme Court not to hear the appeal. According to them, the Makarfi Committee could only challenge the appellate court verdict as interested parties after they must have firstly secured leave of court to file an appeal. They maintained that the suit should either be dismissed or struck out since the supposed appellants (Makarfi’s PDP) neither obtained leave of the Court of Appeal nor that of the Supreme Court before filing the appeal which is based on mixed law and facts. However, the appellants who are represented by a team of lawyers led by Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, wants the apex court to discountenance the Sheriff NEC’s arguments and proceed to hear the appeal on merit. In a counter argument, the Makarfi Committee, prayed the Supreme Court to set aside the Appeal Court judgment of February 17, accusing Sheriff and his group of making deliberate efforts to frustrate hearing of the pending appeal. The appellants argued that it was wrong for Sheriff and others, who had briefed Chief Akin Olujinmi, SAN, to represent them in the substantive appeal and had filed a respondents’ brief, in which they also made similar arguments in relation to the competence of the appeal, to again brief Fagbemi, SAN, to ask the court not to hear the appeal but to strike it out. Relying on Order 8 Rule 6 (1), (2) and (4) of the Supreme Court’s Rules, the Makarfi Committee faulted the March 15, 2017, letter of the Sheriff-led NEC applying to withdraw the appeal and the subsequent application for it to be struck out. The appellants argued that since the appeal was not filed by Sheriff and others, they lacked the right to apply to withdraw it. I always wonder how possible it is for a particular person to be offended by an individual for 490 time in a day before he/she can be able to retaliate. So, is Matthew 18:21-22 be possible to fulfill meant for our generation? Matthew 18:21-22(KJV): "21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? 22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven." |
Giving is considered in the Bible as one of the service to God (Deuteronomy 16:16, Exodus 23:15), but it is very unfortunate that many people do not keep to the word of God that said; “None shall appear before me empty-handed” rather, many go extra mile to criticize those that gives their money and other resources to the church as well as the pastors who tell their members to give. In the other side of the coin, some people give different excuses on while they are unable to give. Below are my five points on why some people don’t give: 1. We are not familiar with what the Bible says about giving. We are not aware of the Bible’s teaching on money and on We have not spent enough time reading God’s Word to see what He says about it. So we miss out on the abundance of wisdom and direction found in the Bible on this important subject. 2. We don’t feel like we make enough money to give. Some feel that generosity is an act reserved for the wealthy, those that have more than enough. What difference could our few dollars make anyway? 3. We have loads of debt. Debt is a generosity killer. We are not able to live with open hands because they are chained to the credit card company. We feel the stress caused by living on the edge of a financial disaster. Paying our bills becomes the priority, not giving. 4. We don’t trust the church. Our first place of generosity should be our local church. Unfortunately, we often withhold our giving for the church for a variety of reasons that boils down to a lack of trust. We don’t trust the leadership. We don’t trust the financial management. And we don’t trust the impact the church is making. 5. We don’t trust God. We act as if God is not the owner of everything, and that He does not hold all the resources we will ever need in His hands. We don’t trust that He will take care of us, that He will give us those resources He holds. So we hold tightly to our money. Even though it was God who entrusted us with His resources, we don’t trust Him. Add your own reason(s)

GOVERNOR Nyesom Wike of River State, yesterday, called for medical examination of the heads of those attacking former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying the state would not destroy its own. This came as former President Jonathan commissioned the second phase of Nkpogu bridge constructed by the Rivers State government, saying he had no regret that Nyesom Wike emerged governor of the state. Jonathan, who said Wike had been commended across party lines for his performance in the state, recalled that the acting President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo, also lauded the governor for his success so far, when he visited the state. While thanking the governor for inviting him to commission the bridge, Jonathan also expressed gratitude to people of the state for their tremendous support during his active political days at the national level. He said: “I have no regrets that Governor Wike is the governor of Rivers State. I am happy that the governor has opened up Rivers State through projects. He has shown so much commitment to infrastructural development. The whole of Rivers State is now a construction yard.” Meantime, Governor Wike said: “We decided that you should come, so that you will know that as those you gave support, we have not abandoned you and we will not abandon you. We are not like some politicians who, when anything is wrong, will begin to sing a different song. Rivers State is a different place. When we believe in you, we believe in you and that is our life. We are different from other Niger Delta states. We can say it with all authority, we are different. We cannot come out in the public and begin to castigate our own. We will not do that. Those of them who do that should go and have a rethink. Doctors should go and examine them whether they are well or not.” The governor also berated the All Progressives Congress, APC-led Federal Government for allegedly failing to deliver on its campaign promises two years into its administration, stressing that it had dumped governance to burn its energy on blaming past government sfor its failures. Wike said: “The party in power told Nigerians that if they were voted in, they would make N1 to be equal to $1. I hope that Nigerians now see that N1 is equal to $1. Is that correct? They said they will make sure that everybody gets employment. I am sure that some of us who are here have all gotten employment. They said that they are going to make life better for Nigerians I hope that we are no longer dying of hunger.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/05/jonathans-traducers-need-medical-examination-wike/
