PoliticsRe: Igbinedion Donates 8M To Chief Judge's Book Launch After Son's Sentencing by isalegan2: 4:17pm On May 07, 2015
TheImp:
http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/on-the-day-his-son-is-sentenced-igbinedion-donates-n8m-at-chief-judge-s-book-launch/208443/

An embarrassing scenario for the judiciary played out last‎ Thursday as businessman and father of former Edo State governor, Lucky Igbinedion, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, donated N8 million at the launch of a book in honour of the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta while another judge of the same court sentenced his son, Michael, for offences related to money laundering.
The sentencing was determined by another judge, not the Chief Judge. Still, I wonder if he would actually keep the "donation."

Igbinedion  made the highest donation of N8 million at the book launch.
Igbinedion, dressed in all white apparel, mingled freely with serving and retired judges, including senior lawyers who populated the gathering. He hugged and shook hands with those his lawyer, Richey Tarfa, SAN, introduced to him. He came in a brown limousine, with Esama (his traditional title) printed on its number plate.
When it was time to launch the book titled: “Encyclopedia of civil procedures and practices of superior courts in Nigeria,” put together by a group of Senior Advocates of Nigeria in honour of Justice Auta, Igbinedion spoke glowingly about the honouree, describing him as a “bold and courageous judge.”
Igbinedion’s donation of N8m was followed by the N7m put together by some Senior Advocates of Nigeria, led by Alex Iziyon (SAN).
The old man's an asshole and showoff. He wanted to make sure he gave the most money. Send his (questionable) money back!

While Igbinedion was eulogizing Justice Auta and making donation at his book launch in Abuja, his (Igbinedion’s) son,  Michael , who was convicted by Justice J. Liman of the Federal High Court, Benin the previous day,  was being sentenced in Benin.
Justice Liman had, on April 29 convicted Michael, younger brother to Lucky and Charles Eboigbodin, the former governor’s personal assistant for money laundering related offences.

Michael was convicted “for receiving cash in excess of the stipulated threshold, while Eboigbodin and a firm, PML Nigeria Limited were convicted on “for colluding to conceal the illicit origin of funds as stipulated under Section 14 (1)(b) of the Money Laundering (prohibition) Act.”

The offences, under Section 15 (b) of the Money Laundering Act carries “a fine of not less than N250, 000 or more than N1million or a term of imprisonment of not less than 2 years or to both fine and imprisonment.” The judge deferred sentencing to the following day.

On April 30, Justice Liman sentenced Eboigbodin to two years imprisonment, but gave Igbinedion an option of N1m fine on each of the three counts for which he was convicted.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had accused them of laundering about N25billion from Edo State’s coffers while Lucky was the state governor.

Lucky, who was equally accused of looting the state got a similar treatment in 2008 when, followinga controversial plea bargain with reached with the EFCC under the leadership of Farida Waziri, Justice Abdul Kafarati (then of the Enugu division of the Federal High Court) sentenced him to six months in jail with the option of a N3.5 million fine.
It runs in their family. undecided

PoliticsRe: FG To Send Yoruba Teachers To Brazil by isalegan2:
otokpamike:
Which of the Yoruba langauge will they teach them, since we have different types.
I don't think it's that hard to figure out what version/type of the language to teach, since, when language is written down it's quite straightforward. The difference comes in when you hear people speak - which is more about dialect. It is one language.

It's not that the words are that different. It's more the pronunciation is different. For example, take someone in the United States. When you read a book it's all written in English but when you go to different parts of the country people do sound different. You might not pick it up if you're from another country. . . as far as you're concerned everybody sounds different (from you) you don't know the difference between the difference (regions). lol.

Also, further compare how somebody who's speaking English in an Irish dialect speaks English to how a Londoner like Hugh Grant the actor speaks English, then compared that to how a Scottish person speaks or how a Southern United States person speaks his own English.

You know see those are simply issues of dialects and pronunciation not (a different version/type of the) language.

I also wanted to mention that this subject is quite interesting because 3 weeks ago I actually ran into someone - a stranger - who was very interested in Yoruba. She wanted me to teach her in the few minutes that she was around - she wanted me to teach her some Yoruba words. She said it (knowledge and interest) was very much in demand in her world. I taught her how to say good morning (E kaaro), good evening (E kaale), Hi/Hello (Bawo ni?). . . told her boy (okunrin) and girl (obinrin) . . . you know, just very basic things. And she remembered when she was leaving. She said that her school was actually very interested. . . that "you could teach it at our college." Of course no native Yoruba speaker would hire me to teach anyone how to speak it shocked cheesy maybe write it. lol. tongue

Just shows you the extent of the interest. The funny part of it is that she's not even African or connected to Nigeria in any way. This is just an American teenager that said that in her little 2 or 4-yr college, that's not Emory or even GA State - a small school that doesn't have a great deal of international students or foreign affairs or culture dept, yet the interest is everywhere.

Its good for Africa. Today it's Yoruba. Tomorrow it's Ashanti. Next day it's going to be all the languages. We cannot continue to be controlled by our own colonial past. We have to rise above it and take our spot next to everybody else not beneath anybody!

This is the kind of person that should be held responsible for those poor misguided drug mules on death row in places like Indonesia. Thank you so much. I just saw this thread and I was going to respond to each of the tribal posts but there were so many! 15 minutes later, I'm still copying and pasting. lol.

But instead of quoting the ignorant haters I will simply concur with you, and add that. . .

Even though I am a strong advocate for a tough sentencing for violent crimes - MAINLY AS A DETERRENT - the news of so many Nigerians held on death row for drug trafficking is making me have a rethink of the efficacy of the death sentence for drug couriers. I am not ashamed to say, seeing so many of my people waiting to lose their lives is really making me wonder if it is not a symptom of a greater evil and mass mental instability in that country amongst the most impoverished desperate and vulnerable.

Anyone of us reading this thread should think of them as Nigerians and not what tribe or regions they're from. If the world hates you and sees you all the same, what purpose does it serve to turn on each other?

It's like this:
The Orangutan tells the gorilla, "Look here, I'm smarter than you, all you can do is roar and beat your chest, me? I've got brains."
The Chimpanzee scoffs, "Whatever I'm smarter than all of you put together, I'm brilliant, I can learn sign language and all kinds of things your tiny brains can't even fathom."
Meanwhile the world sees them all as monkeys!

A good portion of the world sees you all as sub-human. But you know WHO you are.

Stick with your African brother and stop hating.

Let's work on ending this drug trafficking and world-renowned Nigerian criminality together, not point fingers that it's this tribe or that tribe. They're Nigerians.

Proudly Naija4life and Pan-Africanist till the end.

When he became Head of State after the 1983 coup, thousands of Second Republic politicians, including me were picked and locked up by the Junta. But even in kirikiri, I discovered that the NPN elements among us were giving bribe to prison officials to ensure they got double ration of food. Octogenarians (people over the age of 80 ) are active and engaged in all aspects of life. People are living longer and staying active and useful longer. Below is a photo of a sitting Justice in the U.S. Supreme Court, who is called upon to make important decisions every day. She is in her 80s as well. With age comes wisdom. I think Nigerians were so used to seeing young people (like 30-year old Gowon) in power and in charge when the republic was still young, they thought it was always going to be like that. With age comes wisdom. Respect, please. I know for a fact my late grandfather when he was 85 years old could make better decisions, and was of sound mind more, than most people half his age.

by grace we are saved nd nt by the law, lest should anyman boost he is perfect,,,i ll advice u ppu to always do good~always
You sound like a good person and the executions have really touched you and a lot of people.

But the fact remains, drugs, especially heroin, are a killer - for sure - sometimes fast, often slow. If it doesn't kill outright, it ruins lives and families and turn addicts into degenerates and criminals. If you deal or traffic drugs and are willing to push it to others, you are willing to kill. If you are willing to take another's life, you in turn should be prepared to give your life when the time comes. It's the deal criminals made with the devil.

We had this same law in Nigeria during Buhari's first regime, (though I'm unsure why was applied retroactively to those who committed their crimes before the law went into effect). It seems those times of anti-criminality and anti-corruption are gone forever and we are now prepared to accept any immorality in our country. Why is that? Do you see how dangerous the country has become? A family friend told of their house being burgled recently, in area that such would never happened a decade ago. A friend told of a "pickpocket" who walked up to her at a bus stop in Costain and pointed a gun at her to give her purse. A gun! A gun! In Naija. ordinary pickpocket has graduated to an armed robber now walking around in daylight unafraid to point a gun at someone at a crowded bus stop!

We are not only comfortable with high levels of criminality, we routinely export it to other countries. Why out of the 8 executed in Indonesia this time, 4 are Nigerians? Do you have any idea how the reputation of drug trafficking affects other international travelers with a Nigerian passport? Do you know how many years Western countries have been stopping honest businesswomen at airports and demanding body searches of them simply because they caught one 3 or 4 Nigerian that month with drugs hidden on their bodies?

Don't do the crime if you're not prepared for the consequences.

Nigeria will be great one day.
