igbo2011:All right, young'un. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister. Reigned in the late 70s and all through the 80s, 90s and beyond. He inspired a ton of other artists. Died in 2010. If you don't speak Yoruba, you might not enjoy him. But I think you will. ![]() |
Wait, let me come back after I listen. Hi, bros! I'm listening to Barrister at the mo' ![]() P.S. I listened. I thought it was very good. Lyrics are meaningful. Video is striking. I'm not sure how famous he is, but he is pretty lucky that times and things have changed somewhat. That video of him nailed to the cross - such videos usually get a lot of negative press and reactions for the artist. At least when Terence Trent D'Arby did it. Even Madonna got a lot of flack for using that tall actor in her Jesus video. Back to the review. I listened once and I will go back to listen again. There is so much going on. And he nailed it all - pun intended. The lyrics, the music, everything. The message! Don't forget this is a man with a message. Also, as I was watching, I was thinking, dude's gotta be strong, physically, and truly committed to his message to go through all these. Carrying that huge cross and balancing in the air with his arms tied up like that! I also opened it up in YouTube to read the comments. He's had a lot of views! Great job on everything. Thanks, Igbo2011. PPS: The 2nd video is much longer, but I'll watch that too. I'd like to know more about this guy. I'll come back to discuss the message about God in detail. |

Mynd44: Mynd44: Mynd, nitori Olorun. That is not so! If the site above is where you're getting your information about the Lagos throne, commence using other sources, please. I just read the page you linked. That site is a disgrace; whoever wrote or approved that narrative should be shot! Here's a gem. "Moreover, modern day Lagosians have so intermingled that no single tribe or people can claim it even though the predominant language is Yoruba." http://www.lagosstate.gov.ng/pagelinks.php?p=8 Poor grammar + faulty historical "data" + wild speculations = baseless conclusions. I guess those fighting over the "No Man's Land" issue can now leave NL Igbos alone and direct your ire to the appropriate source since it was reported and circulated by your very own official government website. nduchucks:Oh, the England useless royals are exempted from your anti-monarchy campaign since they've already amassed their wealth through centuries of slavery, countless invasions and pillaging. Chuckie, I like you immensely. But please, cease and desist your verbal threat to the Oba of Lagos throne or I shall have no other recourse but to beat you to death with my bare hands! That throne is being held in trust for my oldest child. Seriously. ![]() ademusiwa7:Kaaabiyeeeesi o! Aare Musiwa. ![]() |

Kilode1: ![]() {{{Kilode}}} About Lagos Guber Cinema starring Ambode and Agbajelola ![]() Why is Ambode a better choice? If PDP candidate Agbaje were running on the APC ticket and Ambode was on PDP side, would you still favour Ambode? Please answer before Election time less than 12 hours away. ![]() By the way, for days now, just about every page I click on NL, Ambode's face is staring back at me. Seems the contest is close and the campaign is getting fierce. Desperate times in Kaduna for the current governor. Kaduna Governor Yero Stops Southern Kaduna Chiefs from Meeting VP-Elect Osinbajo (Sahara Reporters) Nervous Kaduna State governor, Alhaji Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, on Tuesday morning pre-empted a meeting in the State between Southern Kaduna top traditional rulers and in-coming Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. The Director General of Kaduna State All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council, Mr. Ben Kure, disclosed this in a press statement. Osinbanjo was in Kafanchan to meet critical stakeholders in the area including traditional rulers, Christian leaders, academic, youth and women leaders ahead of Saturday's governorship election. For the gathering, the over 20 traditional rulers drawn from eight local government areas were on their way to the palace of the Chief of Kagoro, the venue of the meeting, when they received the governor's instruction. Some of the invited chiefs had already arrived in the vicinity when they received signals warning them against meeting with the Vice-President-elect. Kure said "The programme was to first meet traditional rulers before church leaders, and we had notified them and they were ready to receive our in-coming Vice President. The meeting was to pay homage and intimate them of what the in-coming Muhammadu Buhari's government has in stock for Nigerians irrespective religion, ethnicity, region or political interests. He said they were surprised to receive a message that the governor had stopped the meeting and cautioned the invitees to return to their domains. The monarchs complied with the warning. Kure recalled that Governor Yero had three weeks ago also stopped the then presidential candidate of the APC from holding a campaign at Murtala Square in Kaduna, the state capital, adding that he has now tried to embarrass the incoming Vice President. "Are the people of Kaduna state and their traditional rulers slaves of the governor?” he asked. ‘It is quite unfortunate that Kaduna State is now under an individual who is above the law and ruling with impunity. "He should know that the people of Kaduna State are free people with the right of free association and choice. He will not force people to vote for him, it is a democracy and the voice of the people must be heard. " On Saturday, Governor Yero faces a big battle for the gubernatorial office at the polls against former Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nasir el-Rufai. http://saharareporters.com/2015/04/07/kaduna-governor-yero-stops-southern-kaduna-chiefs-meeting-vp-elect-osinbajo |

b Ralphlauren: You expect them to challenge the Oba? Have you ever been to the palace? I watched the video briefly, but couldn't really make out the location of the speech. Trust me sha, if you enter the palace and see the Oba on his throne, and you see all the ceremony, the chieftains and palace guards, plus the praise singer that only walks backwards so as never to turn his back on the Kabiyesi. . . Anyway, that's what it was like during Oyekan's reign. You can't try it!Let's all get along sha. The palace issued an explanation. I hope my Igbo brothers and sisters will continue to live peaceably and prosperously in Eko land. The palace of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has issued a statement, clarifying the Oba’s comments on his alleged threat to Igbos in Lagos to vote the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Akinwunmi Ambode or die in the lagoon.http://www.today.ng/news/ambode-oba-of-lagos-makes-clarification-on-his-threat-to-deal-with-igbos/ |

chocolateme:This (calculated annual salary of $2 million) is very misleading. Where is the link to the Economist article? You posted the basic salary of all other countries listed without spending, housing and staff allowances, but included all of Naija's. Going by your listing of Naira to dollar exchange rate of 162, Nigeria's average legislator salary of #2,484,245.50 = $15,334.00 But Pakistan no try at all o. All those Indian subcontinent type countries are so weird sha. And, it's mighty dangerous there being a public official. Which country did one protester set himself on fire and went to give the "embrace of death" to a politician/activist? |
tbaba1234:Shukran, TBaba. But I have to point out that the above would not have come out of Ambode's mouth. Being from Epe, he would know better than to say, or approve for press release, the below: ". . .Oba Akiolu's alleged outbursts and veiled threats. . ." "Akiolu's statement doesn't in anyway reflect. . ." That 2nd quote is not the proper way to refer to the Oba - you don't say his name just like that, without prefacing with, or appending, his title. Also, subsequent bullet points in the statement refer to Ambode in the 3rd person. I checked out the FB link. That page could be anyone's - more likely a supporter. I can't research further because I think you need an FB account. Can you confirm the page and comments came from candidate Ambode? Like I said in another post, I think there's some misunderstanding about the Oba's address. Would have been better he just spoke Yoruba. I don't believe he hates Igbos or any tribes in Nigeria. He's charged with protecting Lagos and all who reside there. Also, I'm not supporting either candidate. (Disclaimer) |
shegzymoni:Thank you! The oba of Lagos doesn't have an anti-Igbo bone is in his body. He is charged with the protection of Lagos and all who reside there. ![]() I'm actually surprised Kabiyesi didn't make his address in Yoruba. I don't think anyone would have minded. It is the Oba's palace after all. Plus, Igbos and other settlers residing in Lagos usually speak, or at least understand, Yoruba very well. It would have been nice to see a video of all the different people speaking Yoruba. The different accents would just make it more enjoyable. ![]() |
HirstMOG:Bros, you need to read the first few posts again. The OP initially wrote "Oba of Benin" in the topic and narrative, but later corrected it. |

knoph2007:https://static.today.ng/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Oba-Akiolu.jpg The palace of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has issued a statement, clarifying the Oba’s comments on his alleged threat to Igbos in Lagos to vote the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Akinwunmi Ambode or die in the lagoon. Below is the statement; THE PALACE MAKES FURTHER CLARIFICATION ON THE STATEMENT BY THE OBA OF LAGOS. My attention has been drawn to a publication in a national newspaper where HRM Oba Riliwanu Akinolu was alleged to have threatened Igbos in Lagos to make them vote for Ambode. Last Sunday, all honorary Eze Ndigbos in Lagos paid a courtesy call to HRM Oba Akinolu. At the meeting the visitors praised the Oba for his fatherly support for and cooperation with Igbos in. Lagos. They assured him of their continued good neighborliness with other tribes in Lagos and support everything that’ll further strengthen that harmony. Oba Akiolu on his part acknowledged the enviable performance of Governor Fashola and his contribution to the growth of investments in Lagos. He gave the assurance that he is not disturbed or angry with South-East and South- South votes for President Jonathan as perceived by the Eze Ndigbos. The Obas thereafter called on the Igbos chiefs to show appreciation to Lagos State by supporting his candidate Mr. Ambode for continuity of excellence as they have earlier promised. He assured them of his continued support and assistance where needed and the meeting ended with the traditional breaking of kolas, alligator pepper, and bitter kola and pouring of liberation on the ground. It was within this context that that the tradition of Lagos with regard to the lagoon came up. It was noted that whoever works against the throne and the interest and peaceful co-existence of Lagos would end up in the lagoon as per tradition. 2.Oba Akiolu stated further that the Igbo people have not betrayed the throne. Lagos has also not betrayed the Igbo people. Lagos has done so much to make the Igbos comfortable and to prosper. For this, we expect reciprocal respect and understanding. The Oba of Lagos prays that the Lagoon and the throne will continue to bless and protect all those who reside and visit Lagos. 3. Oba Akiolu is the father of all irrespective of tribe, religion or political persuasion. In Lagos, we have an old traditional proverb that relates to the Lagoon. The Lagoon is unique to Lagos. The proverb stresses the need for unity and understanding when you do business in an environment and in this case when you live and do business in Lagos. Oba Akiolu prays for peace for the land of Lagos and prosperity for all its inhabitants. Signed: Chief Lateef Aderibigbe Ajose, Opeluwa of Lagos April 6, 2015 |
