I've seen where someone opened dashboard to fix a leak and forgot to connect the evaporator thermostat. The dashboard had to be opened a second time.

And who knows, the issue may not even be coming from the evaporator.

The only reason u will lose that car is if u default on payment or break movement restrictions. So consequent on that, hirer is responsible for everything for that car, although car is still in owners name and within his rights to wield some control like periodic inspection.

Interesting. Based on this explanation, and this is just "academics", on what grounds will the owner of the car demand for the plates at the end of the HP? If the plates and every other thing are assumed to be part of the car, I as a hirer can decide to burn the papers and plates once I finish paying. Same way I can decide to burn the car or drive it inside the ocean.

I really don't know how they got to the point where he was renewing papers with his money. They should have come to an agremeent to have it removed it from the weekly HP payment.

Now that the mistake has been made, he has paid millions of hard earned naira on the car already. Just return the car papers and go with the car in peace.

I will also not be comfortable knowing someone is still driving a vehicle I have sold with my plates. If I was in the shoes of the car owner, I would have refunded the money.

But if he's refusing to refund, there's not much the driver can do apart from returning the car plates.

My take Is if the payment has been concluded for the hp deal despite all that went down, why not hand-over car papers, collect your plate number and everyone go their separate ways? Why still hold back vehicle documents and demand for your plate number? Something is fishy about that.

I'm seeing this differently. If he has fully paid for the car and ownership will be transferred to him, why still hold on to someone else's plate number?

He should never have spent his money renewing plates and except there was an agreement between them for the car owner to refund the money, he did it out of his own goodwill.

Why pay for a vehicle that cost millions of Naira and plate number renewal of 30k or less is where you draw the line.
